AKA Clark on Quatermass #2: The 1979 Novel This is the second episode we've released in which award-winning author Simon Clark (@HotelMidnight) pops on to talk to Dan about their mutual hero, writer Nigel Kneale. In the earlier episode they discussed Kneale's script books of the 1950s Quatermass TV serials; here they discuss Kneale's 1979 follow-up novel, Quatermass. To preface this discussion, and with the kind blessing of our good friend Spider-Dan, we also present a re-edited 2022 episode from the splendid podcast Spider-Dan and the Secret Bores. In this episode Dan discussed the 1979 theatrical film The Quatermass Conclusion, on which the novel was (sort of) based, and this chat gives excellent context for the discussion with Simon, so it comes first. Beware - spoilers for Quatermass/The Quatermass Conclusion (novel, series and film) and Quatermass and the Pit. October 2024 Book Club: We've got a pair of spooky tales for you this October from the Telos Novella range. First up is “The Dalek Factor” by Simon Clark, originally published March 2004, and then we turn to “The Cabinet of Light” by Daniel O'Mahoney, which came out July 2003. Both feature a Doctor of indeterminate origin but are sadly no longer in print. You can find the “Time Hunter” version of The Cabinet of Light read by Terry Malloy, along with additional Time Hunter novels at Fantom Publishing's website. Special thanks to Steve Toase, a British horror writer based in Germany for performing the Dalek Factor reading. You can check out his work at his site here, including "Dirt Upon My Skin." Exorcist II: The Heretic has been called "the worst film ever made" (by Mark Kermode) and has attracted derision ever since its release in 1977, not least by the makers of the original The Exorcist (1973). Our Ian, who worships The Exorcist, has always avoided it. But esteemed critic Neil Young, our special guest on this episode, insists The Heretic is a more interesting film than its progenitor. Listen as Neil explains while he feels this way, Ian and Stella react to The Heretic for the first time, and Dan tries to chart the middle ground! (Regular listeners will be aware that our schedule is still up the spout. This episode has leapfrogged the promised episode on Quatermass [1979] with Simon Clark, ostensibly to coincide with the cinema release of The Exorcist: Believer, but then we missed the date anyway - and don't mention the new film here cos this episode was recorded months ago. Our podcast schedule is going to remain random for a while, unfortunately, due to Dan's complicated life.) In this week's episode, Nick chats with Simon Clark, a consulting industry veteran who's done everything from founding and exiting his own successful consultancy CVL, to launching his own tech platform, to advising a whole host of boutique consultancies and marcoms businesses on their growth journeys. Simon's story is a great example of how diverse consulting careers can be. He hit the ground running, having started his own digital and e-commerce consultancy back when the internet was in its infancy – and when Simon wasn't much older! At the tender age of 25, with his first major client already secured, he launched CVL, a firm that he went on to sell after 14 successful years. After an extended travel adventure that involved living alongside locals in Lima and even doing an internship in a media startup, Simon returned to UK shores and founded Metis, a new tech start-up in the professional services automation space. Having built a great platform and learnt a ton about the boutique end of the consulting space, Simon and his co-founder called time on Metis, and Simon went on to the next stage of his career advising boutiques big and small as they navigated the challenges of growing a consulting firm. Nick caught up with Simon, who is currently enjoying a well-earned career break, to find out more about his career so far, and what he's learned from his varied experiences. Nick and Simon discuss some fascinating topics in this episode, including: - Why sales training is the best possible grounding for anyone who aspires to run their own consultancy. - The associate focused strategy that led to CVL becoming a huge industry success – and why Simon stuck with that model for the life of the business. - How to diversify and explore new avenues to boost your bottom line without alienating your core client base - Why Simon recommends taking time out to travel early in life, to gain experiences that will benefit you throughout your career All this, plus fishing, football and rugby metaphors aplenty! Whether you're just starting out in your consulting career, planning to start a new firm, or simply enjoy listening to brilliant interviews, you'll love this episode of Climb in Consulting. How do winds start and why do they stop? asks Georgina from the Isle of Wight. What's more, listener Chris Elshaw is suprised we get strong winds at all: why doesn't air just move smoothly between areas of high and low pressure? Why do we get sudden gusts and violent storms? To tackle this breezy mystery, our curious duo don their anoraks and get windy with some weather experts. Dr Simon Clark, a science Youtuber and author of Firmament, convinces Adam that air flow is really about the physics of fluids, which can all be captured by some nifty maths. The idea of pressure turns out to be key, so Hannah makes her own barometer out of a jar, a balloon and some chopsticks, and explains why a bag of crisps will expand as you walk up a mountain. Professor Liz Bentley, Chief Executive of the Royal Meteorological Scoiety, reveals how the dynamics of a simple sea breeze – where air over land is heated more than air over water – illustrates the basic forces driving wind of all kinds. Then everyone gets involved to help Adam understand the tricky Coriolis effect and why the rotation of the Earth makes winds bend and storms spin. And Professor John Turner from the British Antarctic Survey explains why the distinctive features of the coldest continent make its coastline the windiest place on earth.

A thin, invisible layer of air surrounds the Earth, sustaining all known life on the planet and creating the unique climates and weather patterns that make each part of the world different. In Firmament, atmospheric scientist and science communicator Simon Clark offers a rare and accessible tour of the ins and outs of the atmosphere and how we know what we know about it. From the workings of its different layers to why carbon dioxide is special, from pioneers like Pascal to the unsung heroes working in the field to help us understand climate change, Firmament introduces us to an oft-overlooked area of science and not only lays the ground work for us to better understand the debates surrounding the climate today, but also provides a glimpse of the future that is possible with this knowledge in hand.
Arif Naqvi used the language of impact investing to attract luminary limited partners like the Gates Foundation, CDC Group, and Bank of America to invest in his multi-billion dollar private equity firm Abraaj partners that turned out to be a fraud. Naqvi was stealing hundreds of millions of dollars to support his lavish personal spending. Simon Clark broke the story for the Wall Street Journal wrote the definitive book Key Man about the fall of Abraaj (available here) and provides a unique perspective on what the impact investing community to wrestle with the potential underbelly of the enlightened capitalism we preach.
