TAM+ EP69 From FOMO to JOMO: How Letting Go Brings Unexpected Joy in Recovery

The Liberation of Letting Go: Finding Joy in What You Choose to Miss Have you ever felt that nagging anxiety when you miss a social gathering, decline an invitation, or don't immediately respond to a text? That feeling has a name—FOMO (Fear of Missing Out)—and it might be silently sabotaging your recovery journey. In this enlightening episode of The Addicted Mind Plus, hosts Duane and Eric Osterlind explore a powerful mindset shift from FOMO to JOMO (Joy of Missing Out). They reveal how the constant pressure to be everywhere and do everything can lead to overwhelm, anxiety, and disconnection from our true values. The hosts share how social media intensifies this fear by showing everyone's highlight reels, making us feel like we're falling behind or missing crucial experiences. This comparison trap hits especially hard during recovery, whispering lies that rest equals laziness or declining invitations means losing connection. But there's hope in embracing JOMO—the conscious choice to find peace in saying no and truly meaning it. Unlike FOMO, which research links to lower life satisfaction and poor self-esteem, JOMO helps build emotional resilience and alignment with personal values. Through six practical steps, Duane and Eric guide listeners on how to recognize FOMO's presence, identify what they're truly afraid of missing, and shift perspective to see what they gain by setting boundaries. This isn't about avoidance—it's about intention and making choices from clarity rather than fear. The hosts emphasize that recovery doesn't mean you're behind; you're exactly where you need to be. Sometimes the most powerful action is choosing peace over pressure and stillness over striving. JOMO isn't disconnection—it's reconnection to yourself, your needs, and what truly matters. For those ready to practice this transformative skill, the episode points to a downloadable worksheet and invites listeners to join The Addicted Mind community for deeper support. Because recovery isn't something you have to face alone—and sometimes, the quiet joy of letting go is exactly what your healing journey needs. O obxectivo é impulsar a decisión de compra máis rapidamente, aproveitando o medo a quedar sen el -FOMO - Fear of Missing Out. Patrick and Ash dive deep into how our constant bombardment of choices, amplified by social media and marketing, can lead to decision fatigue and self-doubt. They explore how FOMO and FOBO manifest in everyday life and provide strategies to break free from the cycle of comparison and uncertainty. Patrick discusses how we can focus on making intentional, fulfilling decisions by embracing the present moment and understanding the trade-offs inherent in every choice we make. He also shares valuable insights into overcoming choice paralysis and finding peace in knowing that not every opportunity is the right one for you. But that's not all. Patrick also introduces the concept of being a "10% entrepreneur" — someone who balances a steady job with entrepreneurial pursuits. This approach allows individuals to pursue passion projects without risking financial stability, while still investing time and energy into creating something meaningful. As the conversation unfolds, Patrick reflects on how this mindset not only applies to business but also to personal growth. From rediscovering your creative spark to learning how to invest in yourself, this episode provides actionable tools to help you make decisions that align with your long-term goals and lead to greater fulfillment. In This Episode, You'll Learn: How FOMO and FOBO affect decision-making and how to manage these fears. Strategies for overcoming choice paralysis and embracing the present.

Send us a textReThink Podcast Digital MarketplaceReThink WebsiteYoutube Channel31 Days to New Beginnings (Online Course)FOMO, or Fear of Missing Out, is a modern term used to describe the anxiety people feel when they believe others are experiencing more exciting or fulfilling events than they are. While the concept is not new—humans have always feared missing out on opportunities—FOMO became particularly prominent in the early 2000s with the rise of social media.Historically, FOMO has roots in human psychology, where the need to belong and be part of a community is crucial for survival. However, with the constant connectivity of social media, where people are bombarded with images and stories of others' curated lives, FOMO has intensified. High-performing individuals, who are often driven by achievement and comparison, may feel especially vulnerable to this anxiety, as they fear missing out on opportunities that could enhance their success or status.Detaching from social media is a key part of the solution. When individuals take breaks or limit their time online, they reduce the constant comparison to others and the anxiety that comes with it. This allows them to focus more on their own achievements, goals, and present experiences, rather than feeling the pressure of keeping up with what others are doing. By practicing mindfulness and staying present, high-performing individuals can reduce FOMO and feel more content in their personal journey.Compare Less, Celebrate More is a daily practice designed to shift your mindset from focusing on what others have or are doing, to recognizing and celebrating your own unique journey and achievements. It encourages you to turn moments of comparison into opportunities for self-acknowledgment and gratitude. Here's how it works:The Problem: Constant ComparisonIn today's hyperconnected world, it's easy to fall into the habit of comparing yourself to others, especially when social media highlights only the best parts of their lives. This comparison often leads to feelings of inadequacy, frustration, and even FOMO (Fear of Missing Out). It can make you feel like you're always behind or not good enough. The Shift: Celebrate Your Own AchievementsInstead of dwelling on what others are doing, take a proactive approach. Each time you catch yourself comparing, pause, and consciously redirect your focus. Ask yourself: What have I accomplished? What steps am I taking towards my goals? Whether it's something big like a career milestone, or something small like finishing a task or maintaining a healthy habit, acknowledge it as a success.Support the Podcast: https://www.buzzsprout.com/1590358/support Closing of ReThinkBuzzsprout - Let's get your podcast launched! In this episode, we tackle a thought-provoking question from one of our listeners: Is it ethical to use urgency as a marketing tactic?  This question sparked a deep conversation about the ethics of digital marketing, particularly the use of scarcity to drive sales.  We feature insights from Daniel Bisett, partner and CXO at WeRock DM, who shares his thoughts after watching "The Social Dilemma" and wrestling with the impact of digital marketing on mental health. Bisett discusses the ethical concerns of creating false urgency in marketing, comparing it to the stress and pressure felt by consumers during high-stakes purchases, like a kitchen remodel. He argues that manipulating customers with "FOMO" (Fear of Missing Out) can lead to hasty, anxiety-driven decisions, which ultimately harm the customer and the brand's reputation.  Instead, Bisett advocates for building trust and long-term relationships by offering genuine value rather than pressure-filled transactions. Bisett's message and our subsequent discussion challenge marketers to reflect on their tactics and consider the long-term implications of their strategies, not just for their business, but for their customers' well-being. In this episode, we further explore whether using behavioral science in marketing crosses ethical lines, especially when marketers understand more about customer behavior than the customers themselves. We also delve into the nuances of ethical intent, the role of empathy, and the importance of transparency in marketing practices. We also discuss how companies can ensure they are not just making sales but also treating customers with dignity and respect. In this episode you will also learn: The ethical implications of using behavioral science in marketing. The difference between needs-based selling and manipulative sales tactics. The role of empathy in ethical marketing decisions. How intent and transparency can help marketers stay on the ethical side of business. Real-life examples of ethical and unethical marketing practices. Strategies for building long-term customer relationships based on trust and value.

Ever wonder how to win a deal even when you're not the highest bidder? In this episode, I sit down with Zack, one of my students from Arizona, who's facing a tough situation—a seller is ready to sign, but there's a competing offer on the table that's $20,000 higher. We dive into the strategies that can tip the scales in your favor, even when you're up against bigger offers. From understanding the seller's true motivations to leveraging the power of FOMO (fear of missing out), we explore how to close deals by focusing on more than just the price. Key Takeaways: Never lead with price in negotiations; focus on solving the seller's problems instead. Building trust and rapport can often outweigh a higher offer. The power of FOMO (Fear of Missing Out) can make a seller more likely to accept a lower offer. Always understand the seller's situation and needs beyond the monetary aspect. Offering additional value—like convenience or faster closing—can be more compelling than just raising your offer. Welcome back to "Construct Your Life." Today, I want to talk about something that's been a significant lesson in my journey - patience. Someone once told me that perhaps the reason I'm here on this earth is to learn patience, and that it could be a lifelong endeavor. While I've improved over time, it's clear that many people struggle with patience. Key Highlights: - Patience isn't just about waiting; it's closely tied to having a clear vision of your ultimate goals. Without clarity on where you're headed, impatience often stems from a lack of long-term perspective. - Clarity of vision plays a crucial role in cultivating patience. When you have a solid understanding of your destination and purpose, patience becomes more natural as you navigate towards your goals. - FOMO (Fear of Missing Out) often leads to short-term decisions made without considering long-term clarity and vision. It's vital to align actions with your overarching goals to avoid impulsive choices. - Building a long-term vision requires time and deliberate planning. It may take months or even years to refine and solidify your vision for the future, but this investment sets the stage for long-term success. I'm currently in the process of rebuilding my life vision, reassessing my goals, lifestyle choices, and strategic focus. This process takes time ! Short-term gains are no match for the rewards of patient, long-term vision and planning. So, it might not be a lack of patience that's holding you back; it could be a lack of clarity. Take the time to define your vision, set long-term goals, and allow patience to guide your actions towards lasting success.

Understanding human psychology will always move your sales pipeline faster than the speed of lightning. In this episode, I share a simple trick that helped my podcasting company secure valuable appointments and generate significant revenue. Discover why the "Close File" method still works and how you can use it. Understanding Human Behavior One of sales's most fundamental and overlooked aspects is understanding human behavior. Every title, email, and phone call in sales is not just a transaction, but an opportunity to connect with a real person who craves genuine interaction.  By grasping the nuances of human psychology, salespeople can navigate conversations more effectively and close more deals. The "Close File" Strategy The "Close File" strategy is an email tactic that can effectively filter out non-responsive leads and revive interest from potential prospects. I share an example of a simple yet effective email that asks the recipient if they still want to proceed or if the file should be closed.  This approach leverages psychological triggers like FOMO (Fear of Missing Out) to prompt responses. Why It Works The success of the "Close File" strategy lies in its psychological underpinnings.  People fear missing out on valuable opportunities, and the confident, straightforward approach of closing the file catches their attention.  This method cleans up your pipeline and accelerates the decision-making process for leads. “The idea of you closing something and taking it away makes them want it even more. It's kind of like when you were a teenager, and your parents told you not to do something. It made you want to do it even more.” - Donald Kelly.
