‘It's my church' – that's how Lucy Clark has previously described her love of football, and the meaning that she attaches to her involvement with the beautiful game. Her appointment at the end of January as the new manager at Sutton United Women was therefore not just a moment of personal achievement, but a landmark for the game as well – with Clark becoming the first transgender woman to manage in the top five divisions of the UK women's game, just years after she became the football's first transgender referee. And honestly, this is an amazing conversation with an individual who lives and breathes the beautiful game – in fact, when we tried to get Lucy to talk about anything other than football, it turns out she absolutely couldn't do it! We talk about Lucy's love of the game growing up, coaching, refereeing, her return to management – and her personal journey as she discovered her authentic self and found a way to bring that to the beautiful game as well. It's a conversation that is genuine, uplifting, fun and everything you could want from a guest – and we're massively grateful that Lucy took the time to join us for this chat. Earlier this year, On January 22, Brooke Thomas an ultra runner and nurse, finished running the 3,000km Te Araroa Trail. Which starts at Cape Regina in the North Island and runs through to Buff, which is the bottom of the South Island. Brooke started her journey (supported) on November 26, 2020 and ran for 57 days, 12 hours, breaking the Te Araroa women’s route record by almost nine days! During this episode, Brooke shares more about her love of running and why she wanted to take on this challenge, she shares the high points; running 100km in one day and finishing the challenge. To reflecting back on when she ending up in hospital and not knowing if she would be able to carry on. We talk about the logistics and the physical and mental preparation. Brooke also shares more about her heart condition and how having a pacemaker/defibrillator installed has impacted on her life and running. Brooke was raising money for Heart Kids, a nonprofit organisation in New Zealand that supports children living with heart defects. Brooke in her own words: “At age 22 I was diagnosed with a heart condition and became the recipient of an inserted cardiac pacemaker/defibrillator. Being told you have a long term condition at that age, I reckon it's probably pretty normal to go through the journey of feeling hard done by, asking 'why me', then eventually learning to accept and embrace it. One of my favourite quotes is that "it's not the throw, but the catch". You can't always choose what life might chuck at you, but you decide how to receive it, and what to do next. Being a nurse and witnessing the enormous challenges some patients go through has also definitely helped me to stay grounded when it comes to my own condition, and 100% inspired me to keep pushing my own boundaries. I guess the best thing I've learned through my own experiences is that you never know how long you're going to get in life to do all the things you want to do. We've just got to make the most of what we’ve got and embrace any opportunity you get while you can. For me, anything that both scares me and makes me question myself is definitely something I want to try!” “Running the length of a country is without doubt the toughest challenge I have ever undertaken before. Yet somehow all the moments of struggle, exhaustion, frustration and disbelief in myself are so quickly forgotten in comparison to the excitement, raw happiness and gratitude that I have experienced throughout this journey.” - Brooke Thomas New episodes of the Tough Girl Podcast go live every Tuesday and Thursday at 7am UK time - Make sure you hit the subscribe button so you don’t miss out. This week, Eugene and Matt get the band back together and engage in our first joint conversation of 2020 with the wonderful Lucy Clark. Lucy spent 66 days 7 hours and 8 minutes setting a new female supported FKT on the Te Araroa trail, which runs from Cape Reinga to Bluff. Literally, like, the WHOLE of Aotearoa. Lucy was looking for a challenge and when the idea arose to shoot for the FKT she embraced it, training for 12 months without missing a single session (let that sink in) and undertaking the journey with her husband, Tommy, a camper van, and a whole lot of best laid plans, which quickly went out the window or underwent major revision. This conversation is an amazing recounting of the challenge, fortitude, joy, fear, adjustment, amazement, and engagement that it took to complete the FKT, and, in the process, carving out a new record by 11 days. We talk about Lucy’s background in running, her readjustment to life post Te Araroa, and just how habit-forming a large block of Whittaker’s chocolate a night can be.
Hey guys! Thanks for joining me and The Gay Footballer's Podcast. If this is you first time to the podcast, welcome! If you are returning, I appreciate your commitment to the podcast. Today’s podcast features the amazing Lucy Clark. If you recall, I first interviewed Lucy waaay back in October, episode 7. If you haven’t listened to that podcast yet, I recommend you pause this, go back, listen to it, then get back into this one! Lucy spent a long time planning an epic adventure. She planned to run the length of NZ from the tip of Cape Reinga in the North Island to the Bluff in the South Island. Well, with strength and determination Lucy did it! She now has the fastest known time, finishing the Te Araroa (tee-are-a-rho-a) trail in 66 days, 7 hours and 8 minutes. What an absolutely phenomenal achievement! Lucy recently completed a record 66 Day run along the 3,000km Te Araroa Trail from the Northern tip of New Zealand's North Island to the most Southern point of the South Island. A harsh off road route that accumulates 80,000 metres of climbing. An incredible story of an inexperienced athlete believing and chasing dreams. Enjoy
The Te Araroa is amazing: from the northern to southern tip of New Zealand, across the entire island (2 actually) nation! Lucy set the Female FKT, followed by George a mere 4 days later with the Male FKT, completely by coincidence. Lucy's tip for hiking 66 straight days? "Go shove a heap of food in your face, then go again." George met the previous Female FKT holder by chance in a cafe, who told him about Lucy, who was posting good daily reports, so George was able to navigate stream crossings and other potential bottlenecks. Then Lucy had a day when the air was thick with smoke. "I couldn't see well, the horizon was blocked my smoke. I asked a passing mountain biker; he said 'huge bushfires in Australia'. That's when I found out my own country was burning!"

In this episode, I speak with Lucy Clark, who has recently completed a trek along the Te Araroa Trail.... This runs the length of New Zealand... an over 3,000km journey! Lucy and I talk a little bit about her training, nutrition, mental/physical feelings, and so much more. Lucy speaks about appreciating the journey, rather than focusing so much on pace which is a great lesson to learn. Granted, she was going for an FKT (fastest known time), but she did find time to enjoy the journey she was undertaking. Lucy averaged about a marathon every day with ONLY ONE DAY OFF. Takeaways: 1. Planning is everything. You have to have a roadmap when you are planning something huge-- especially if you want to do well. 2. The plan can go out the window. Even if it's something like nutrition. But you have to think on your feet and figure out how to modify. 3. GET YOUR REST. Someone like Lucy who runs this much, you want to listen to her recovery tips.... Sleep is her biggest go to for recovery because that's how your body will recover. 4. Sometimes, the thought of something is worse than the thing itself. Your mind will play up on you but don't let it win. 5. Take the time to appreciate the things that truly matter... Even when you are in the thick of something incredibly challenging, you CAN take time to enjoy the important things in your life. 6. If you have a dream, go for it. Recorded at All About Women on March 5th, 2017. What’s wrong with our education system? How can we transform mass education into something that can work for everyone and delivers what we need in a world of rapid change? As journalist Lucy Clark battled to save her daughter from a school system that discouraged difference, she set out to discover the real meaning of success and failure and why we educate young people as we do. Chair: Bridgette Van Leuven
It’s impossible to talk about rising pressure in education without addressing the elephant in the room, that is, the prevalence of children of Asian background working overtime for their excellent academic outcomes in our schools, particularly our selective schools. People are reluctant to address this head on, because invariably an accusation of racism – or actual racism – will follow. Lucy Clark spoke to Dr Christina Ho from UTS about her latest research in a Guardian Australia Behind the Lines podcast • Hothoused and hyper-racialised: the ethnic imbalance in our selective schools
It’s her manifesto on everything wrong with Australia’s education system. Lucy Clark’s non-fiction book, Beautiful Failures, she examines “how the for success is harming our kids.”
Lucy Clark joins Gabrielle Jackson and Kristina Keneally to discuss the education policies on offer at this election, why the Gonski funding plan now divides the major parties, and how that debate means some critical questions are being ignored
Michael Slezak, Guardian Australia’s environment reporter, joins Gabrielle Jackson, Nick Evershed and Lucy Clark to talk about how we revealed the full story of coral bleaching on the Great Barrier Reef for our ‘Reef on the brink’, series and why the fate of the reef should be centre stage during the Australian election
Bridie Jabour talks to Guardian Australia’s opinion editor Gabrielle Jackson and senior editor Lucy Clark about covering feminism and sexism for the Guardian.
