Tobias Penno is an academic and lecturer in Social Work at the University of Western Australia (U.W.A). His first academic publication titled ‘How Ayahuasca Offers Psychosocial Wellbeing' won the social work research prize in the school of Medicine, Dentistry and Health Science at U.W.A. in 2017. Tobias is the current chair of the Australian Psychedelic Society, and co-ordinates the Mental Health Professional Network's local Psychedelic Community of Practice. His primary research focus is on the therapeutic skillset for psychedelic-assisted psychotherapy.  Tobias is passionate about the role of social work in this field and is currently part of the therapy team for Reset Mind Sciences, a Perth-based clinical trial using psychedelic medicine for treatment-resistant depression. In this episode, Joe interviews the Co-Founders of Enosis Therapeutics: researcher and scientist, Agnieszka Sekula; and psychiatrist, clinical advisor to the Australian Psychedelic Society, and leading Australian advocate for psychedelic-assisted psychotherapy, Dr. Prash P.  Enosis Therapeutics is a medtech startup that began with the question: how can we use VR – with or without psychedelics – to improve mental health outcomes? They feel that the biggest problem with powerful psychedelic experiences is that, once you're back in reality, it's oddly difficult to remember the insights and new ideas that were so clear during the experience, and even harder to make connections that lead to concrete change. They believe that the immersive nature of VR and the novelty of unique VR environments creates a sense of presence that can't be recreated otherwise – a liminal, in-between state that's just different enough to allow the patient to feel like they're back in that non-ordinary state, and therefore more able to anchor their experience and begin to find connections and more clearly understand newfound insights.  This all happens by the user essentially creating nonlinear, abstract, multi-sensory VR paintings while describing what they remembered; allowing them to revisit these worlds later, bring in therapists (or anyone else) to work inside these environments, and hear their own voice describing what happened, thereby creating a mental map that can be worked with in completely unique ways.  They talk about the conflict between new technologies and traditionalists; the problems with moving away from psychoanalysis and not treating psychotherapy as a process; how VR could improve the efficacy of therapy (and improve therapists' lives); how it could replace models of repeated dosage; how VR could generate analytics to actually quantify success in mental health treatment; and how (whether psychedelics are used or not) culture needs to bring the psychedelic way of thinking to mental health. www.psychedelicstoday.com

We're already the weird homeschool people, but when 3 Adelaide High school girls staged a protest that sparked a national conversation about the sexual harassment rife throughout educational institutions, our minds started racing through all of the content we've learnt from psychology, psychotherapy, psychedelics and culture studies. The theory that emerged totally rocked us. And it's maybe a bigger problem than any one school or schooling system, could ever hope to tackle. Caine Barlow is a Mycologist and Fungi Educator based in Melbourne, Australia.  He gives regular talks on mycology and fungi conservation, and teaches gourmet mushroom cultivation.  He is a member of the Australian organisations Entheogenesis Australis, MYCOmmunity Applied Mycology, The Australian Psychedelic Society, and the Entheome Foundation. She has facilitated Music Therapy groups in adult mental health and with drug and alcohol inpatient therapy groups.Meredith has a private practice in Guided Imagery and Music therapy, a form of music psychotherapy that developed out of LSD research in the 1960s. She works with a holistic approach to address the needs of her clients and special interests include LGBTQIA+ issues, healing from trauma, relationships and spiritual issues. Meredith also works with Australian Psychedelic Society, facilitating integration workshops for people who have had challenging psychedelic experiences.

Dean Wright is a Neuroscientist, Therapist and one of the founding members of the Australian Psychedelic Society which advocates for the medicinal and therapeutic usage of psychedelic drugs. "We as a society could progress so much if we listened to the fringe a little bit more". In this episode of the podcast, Dean discusses some of the research surrounding psychedelics, showing that these drugs could be safer and far more effective than current mental health treatments. Not only that, we discuss some of the bumpy history of psychedelic medication and why the war on drugs might have created some unfounded misconceptions. Finally, Konner and Dean touched on what addiction is, how drugs should be viewed legally and reflected on the fact that mental health treatment could be very different today if research on psychedelics had not have been halted a few decades ago.
