Coach and Playboy model Savannah for a conversation that cuts through the noise. We explore the tension between drive and surrender - when to push and when to let go - and what it really means to pursue deep wellbeing in a world hooked on distraction. From curiosity and discipline to the pull of tech addiction and the impact of objectifying media, we get honest about the cultural forces shaping us. We also dive into the Madonna–whore complex, inner beauty, getting back to nature, and how psychedelics like ketamine can help (or hinder) the integration of our full selves. Drawing from in-depth interviews with female elders who have served as guides in the underground psychedelic community, Harris uncovers the hidden insights, healing potential, and spiritual growth cultivated through sacred entheogenic journeys. While current psychedelic research focuses on therapeutic applications involving limited counseling sessions, Harris emphasizes the need to honor the hard-earned knowledge amassed by seasoned guides. He grew up in Canada and Switzerland, studied history at the University of Kent at Canterbury, and received his doctorate in anthropology from Stanford University. He works as Amazonian projects director for the Swiss NGO Nouvelle Planète.He is the author of several books, including “The cosmic serpent: DNA and the origins of knowledge” (New York: Penguin/Tarcher, 1998).Dr. Narby discusses his book, Plant Teachers: Ayahuasca, Tobacco, and the pursuit of Knowledge, which he coauthored with Rafael Chanchari Pizuri, an elder of the indigenous Shawi people of Peru. Dr. Narby goes into great detail about the cultural aspects of plant medicines in indigenous cultures. In particular, the South American, Shamanic uses of both tobacco and ayahuasca. Tobacco as it has been adulterer by European-based framing and industrial practices is nothing like the plant as used in South American, indigenous healing and spiritual practices. Overall, Dr. Narby advocates and hopes for a blending of Western approaches to science and medicine with that of the wisdom traditions of indigenous elders.Dr. Narby's website:https://greatmystery.org/jeremynarby/Plant Teachers Book at Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/Plant-Teachers-Ayahuasca-Tobacco-Knowledge/dp/1608687732The Psychology Talk Podcast is a unique conversation about psychology around the globe. Stuart Preston is fascinating. In this episode we find out how a straight-laced guy, who's father worked for The D.E.A. and had never taken drugs in his life, learned to heal and deal with the grief over his 19 year old son's suicide, by using psychedlics. Stuart is a comedian, public speaker, podcast host and the author of a book called “The Grief Trip.” He's trying to break the stigmas of mental health, suicide and psychedlics. Originally, the idea was somehow to try and be close to his son, and that maybe this could be a way. Here's the book: https://bit.ly/thegrieftrip. Grief is a really challenging emotion. Everyone in my immediate family has passed and I've experienced other loss. But losing a child, that is something that I just can't imagine. What Jennifer and I talk about is like with all feelings, the biggest challenge with grief, is to feel it, to be present and to make space to allow it. It's just so unfamiliar to be present with such strong emotions. But here is the story of Stuart, who not only is being present with grief, he's exploring it using a tool, and that is psychedlics. There is a lot of research happening about how Psychedlics can enhance mental health. I know some people who's lives have been transformed. And this is in no way advocating that people should run out and use psychedlics. It's not for everybody and it's a very careful, conscious process with the help of experienced practitioners. Michael Pollan has written a book called “How To Change Your Mind.” Here's a talk he gave: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KuhmZSFvhL0. Last night on March 9th, The MGH Center for Neuroscience of Psychedelics welcomed award winning author and Professor Michael Pollan to join Dr. Jerry Rosenbaum and team to celebrate the launching of this exciting and novel effort at Mass General. The conversation was introduced by social change activist and philanthropist Dick Simon who appropriately held up Pollan's 2018 book "How to change your mind." It was clear that although psychedelics for mental health have been proposed and studied for about 100 years, Simon referred to what many people in the field call time periods of "BP and AP" or Before Pollan and After Pollan. Since his 2018 book, the field continues to evolve and Pollan mentioned that a Center like this is just the right place to continue to explore and create new treatments. He said that although he expected to meet some resistance by mainstream psychiatry, on the contrary he found at MGH a willingness and openness to move forward.  He noted that the "return of psychedelics" to Harvard just makes sense and is a big event, given the rich yet complicated history here.Pollan emphasized that as clinicians and researchers, many focus on the negative changes that can occur in the brain from development forward in life. However, what are the possible ways to creating positive change? A key theme was the idea that how we change the brain is not likely facilitated by the chemicals we offer the brain, rather it is experience that can change the brain. Towards the conclusion of the discussion, Pollan mentioned that (stuck) with me - saying that this entire field has been very promising, but with the right investment in resources, education and research, could be profound. There is so much mental illness that is not diagnosed and not treated the way it can be. The veteran population as we know has significant rates of PTS and depression, with only 50% seeking help. Two medications with the most evidence and work supporting the use in this kind of experience driven treatment are…psilocybin and MDMA. Currently, Home Base is looking at PTS with MDMA in a new study. In collaboration with the new Center at MGH, we hope to bring more to the table for the veteran population so we can help to target stress, depression, anxiety and other mental health conditions our veterans struggle with.So how do we deliver that experience, how do we show the evidence or the state of the science, and how do we educate and endorse the public that there are indeed so many people that can be helped in this way? I was lucky to talk with a team of people leading this effort at MGH: Dr. Jerry Rosenbaum, The Director of the new Center and Psychiatrist-in-Chief Emeritus at MGH, Dr. Franklin King (Education and Training), and Dr. Rick Doblin, a leader in psychedelic research and policy, and founder of MAPS, or Multidisciplinary Association for Psychedelic Studies. We will take a step back in time to the beginning of this journey in using psychedelics to augment experience, talk about the process of this novel treatment, and highlight the new MGH Center for Neuroscience of Psychedelics that Home Base is collaborating with. At the end of the day, the overarching goal is alleviating the pain of mental illness in both civilian and military populations and combating these complicated diseases.Thank you for joining us for this special episode on new ways to look at the brain, and treatment of mental health conditions, specifically PTS as it relates to our veterans at Home Base. To learn more and connect with us at Home Base:www.homebase.org/homebasenationTwitter,Facebook,Instagram,LinkedInHome Base Nation Team: Steve Monaco, Marine Veteran Brendan McCaffrey, Maureen Roderick, Charlotte Luckey, Karianne Kraus, with COO Michael Allard and Brigadier General  Jack HammondProducer and Host: Dr. Ron HirschbergMusic:  The Butler FrogsHome Base Media Lab Chairman: Peter SmythHome Base Nation is the official podcast of Home Base Program for Veterans and Military Families, a partnership of the Massachusetts General Hospital and the Red Sox Foundation. The views expressed by guests to the Home Base Nation podcast are their own and their appearance on the program does not imply an endorsement of them or any entity they represent. He extensively covers these trials and his findings in his book DMT: The Spirit Molecule. For this discussion, we talked about his book DMT and the Soul of Prophecy, in which he compares and contrasts the prophetic state as depicted in the Hebrew Bible with the DMT state. The book dives into the theory of theoneurology, which posits that God designed the human brain as being able to serve as a channel of communication to the divine and Dr. Strassman hypothesizes that DMT could play a role in that.
