At this festive time of year, when many people are bringing trees into their homes to decorate for the holidays, we are going back to our story of a pioneering scientist who made it her mission to ensure that plants traveling across borders did not carry any diseases. It was in 1909, that the Mayor of Tokyo sent a gift of 2,000 prized cherry trees to Washington, D.C. But the iconic blossoms enjoyed each spring along the Tidal Basin are not from those trees. That's because Flora Patterson, who was the Mycologist in Charge at the USDA, recognized the original saplings were infected, and the shipment was burned on the National Mall. In this episode, we explore  Patterson's lasting impact on the field of mycology, starting with a blight that killed off the American chestnut trees, and how she helped make the USDA's National Fungus Collection the largest in the world.

Here's a recipe to try. While this spray is all-natural, it can harm beneficial insects like bees, so be sure to spray at a time when bees aren't active (early morning and late evening). Keep an eye out for bird nests and avoid spraying near them. And remember, you wouldn't want to get this in your eyes or on your skin, so handle it with care!Garlic Fruit Tree SprayGarlic is known for its strong scent, which can deter many types of pests, from aphids to caterpillars and even some types of fungi. Ingredients:1 pound of garlic1 gallon of water (rainwater is best)Instructions:Peel and Mince: Start by peeling the garlic cloves. Then, mince or finely chop them to release the essential oils. The finer, the better.Simmer: Combine the minced garlic with water in a large pot. Bring the mixture to a simmer (not a full boil) and let it cook for about 20 minutes. This process infuses the water with garlic's active compounds.Cool and Strain: After simmering, take the pot off the heat and let it cool. Once it's cool, strain the mixture to remove the garlic pieces. A cheesecloth or a fine mesh strainer works great for this. You want the liquid as clear as possible to prevent any sprayer clogs.Dilute (Optional): Depending on what you're dealing with, you might want to dilute the mixture. A common approach is to dilute the concentrated garlic water with more water. This step is adjustable based on your needs and the sensitivity of your plants.Bottle Up: Pour the strained, cooled liquid into a spray bottle or a larger sprayer for application. It's ready to use!Apply: Spray it on the leaves of your fruit trees, covering both the tops and undersides where pests like to hide. Early morning or late afternoon is the best time to apply, avoiding the hot midday sun to reduce the risk of burning the leaves.Tips:Storage: You can store the garlic spray in the refrigerator for up to a week. For longer storage, freeze it in an ice cube tray and thaw cubes as needed.Test: Always test the spray on a small area of the plant first to ensure it doesn't react badly.Reapply: After rain or watering, you might need to reapply, as it can wash off.

Quietly, constantly,  the Fifth Kingdom -- Fungi-- works just below our feet providing a vast and intelligent, communication network connecting, transmuting organic matter into crucial nourishment for  our plants, trees, soil, microorganisms and more…. This week we humbly welcome mycologist and Founder of Boulder Mushroom, Zach Hedstrom in a candid dialogue around restoring our inner and outer landscapes through the magic of mushrooms! Zach opens up about his lifelong fascination with fungi, the beginnings of Boulder Mushroom (from  a 100-square-foot cabin in the Colorado mountain to the rainforests of Ecuador), why healing from the mycorrhizae up works, and how his recent research shows how profound the impact of implementing native fungi into forest ecosystems for environmental restoration and fire mitigation can be.  Zach shares how we can begin educating ourselves on the diverse health and environmental benefits of mushrooms, his open-minded approach to foraging and mushroom cultivation, and why simply slowing down and listening to the mycelial web is essential.  This conversation unveils nature-based solutions to climate change, and the interconnectedness of the mycelium kingdom with the human family, making it a must-listen for those of us hoping to unlock the potential for remediating our land and our hearts. Mycology is the study of fungi. Fungi are the unsung heroes of the natural world. Without them, plants would not grow, trees would not decompose, soil would be less rich, and our bodies would go through some very unpleasant changesSooo... why am I doing this?I started this side venture because I want to immerse myself in the world of fungi. My fascination took off last year when I watched Fantastic Fungi on Netflix.Since then, I've become what some might call an amateur Mycologist. I've read book upon book about their intricate communication systems and how they work with trees to keep forests healthy. I've joined the Colorado Mycological Society to learn from experts and foray into the woods looking for mushrooms. This podcast will be a celebration of their world, and why we're so lucky that they exist. I'm going to have guests join the show to talk about everything from mushroom cultivation to mushroom hunting, to mycological science & research, and so so much more. I hope you'll join me as I dive deep, learning along the way, sharing my knowledge and that of experts, and telling you about my closet mushroom lab. Hosted on Acast. Hey fellow passengers, it's Mimi. My most sincere hope is that, by now, I'm growing on you, not unlike a fungus. You know what they say, falling in love is like eating mushrooms, ‘you never know if it's the real thing until it's too late.' Today, my guest is Dr. Michael Beug. If you don't know who he is, you may be familiar with some of his proteges, including Paul Stamets, and many others who studied under Dr. Beug. He taught chemistry, mycology, and organic farming at Evergreen State Collage in Olympia, WA, for 32 years, now retired, but that hasn't slowed him down! He's had a very interesting career and I can't wait for you to hear some of those stories from his life. Fungi are so critical to everything that we do in agriculture. They synthesize a truly limitless array of secondary metabolites and have played a role in the great phylogenetic tree of life since it crept out of the ocean. Dr. Beug is very passionate about the intersection between fungi, chemistry, agriculture, and the particular moment in which we all find ourselves in the modern age. Mentioned in the show... But so much of the fungi kingdom is invisible — underground — and many say underappreciated. Fungi are vital to life on the planet, but scientists are just beginning to understand their many functions and possibilities. On this episode, we explore the role of fungi in nature, in medicine, and in our lives. We'll talk about sustainable design that utilizes mycelium, discuss how fungi form networks that communicate information, and look at an experimental and unapproved fungi-based treatment people are using to regain their sense of smell. Also heard on this week’s episode: Mycologist and mushroom entrepreneur Paul Stamets talks about growing mushrooms in your own backyard. We visit Vedge Restaurant in Philadelphia to get a crash course on preparing mushrooms from Chef Rich Landau (Pro tip: hold the salt until the very end!) He explains how to cook with different mushrooms, and recalls a time when portobello mushrooms were an expensive rarity. Designer Danielle Trofe talks about the lampshades she grows from mycelium. Now, she brings her love of mushrooms to fans online, where she goes by “Fungiwoman.” Her sites feature beautiful photos of mushrooms that she finds in the wild, as well as explanations and tips for identification.

Marine mycology - have you heard of it? Also known as, the branch of biology concerned with the study of marine fungi. Today's podcast guest, Cordelia Roberts, is a PhD candidate studying the interaction of the understudied marine fungi, with marine snow particles in both open and coastal oceans and even polar seas! And she's here today to encourage women and girls to get into and pioneer the novel research area of marine mycology, and to show the rest of the world that being a marine biologist isn't just about splashing about with dolphins and turtles. On this episode, we'll be chatting through her paper, titled: Chytrid fungi shape bacterial communities on model particulate organic matter and before you click off before it sounds too complex, Cordelia does a fantastic job of breaking down exactly what this means and why this is such a cool field of research.
