While Truth Fairy is away, Dr. T hosts this episode solo, welcoming Scott Hill, author of “Confrontation with the Unconscious: Jungian Depth Psychology and Psychedelic Experience”, who completed his PhD with a dissertation titled ‘Building a Jungian Framework for Understanding Psychedelic Induced Psychotic States' at the California Institute of Integral Studies. Dr. Hill shares his early transformative encounters with LSD in 1967, which, though initially ecstatic, devolved into psychologically traumatic events. These experiences led him on a lifelong journey of self-exploration, academic inquiry, and healing.  Scott shares his journey very openly with Dr. T and they discuss how Scott's return to academia in Cailfornia, studying under Stan Grof and Ralph Metzner, deepened his understanding of his own experiences. They examine how Jung's concepts of the collective unconscious and archetypes reflect in intense psychedelic states. Scott details how key reading, Holotropic Breathwork, a medicine circle. and an MDMA-assisted therapy session at Burning Man, and MDMA-assisted therapy all helped heal his ongoing flashbacks.  Dr. T and Scott Hill share a deep and revelatory conversation, at the end of which Scott expresses gratitude for the path he was forced onto in spite of how painfully it began. He describes writing and academic research as transformative tools and identifies scholarship as a spiritual practice in its own right. “Confrontation with the Unconscious: Jungian Depth Psychology and Psychedelic Experience”, Dr. Hill's book, is now foundational in psychedelic psychotherapy circles, and his insights are key to understanding much about psychedelic psychology. “As I read about the myths of Gilgamesh, Inanna,, Job and Christ, I was struck by the resonance between passages in those myths and my difficult psychedelic experiences. Given the Jungian view that myths are expressions of the archetypal unconscious, and given the resonance I experienced reading those myths, I started to wonder whether my terrifying trips, and perhaps those of others, might be understood, in Jung's words, as experiences of an archetypal nature.” - Scott Hill About Scott Hill:Scott J. Hill, Ph.D., lives in Sweden, where he conducts scholarly research on the intersection between psychedelic studies and Jungian psychology. In this episode of The Psychedelic Couch, host Clare Faulkner is joined by Joe and Kyle, the co-founders of Psychedelics Today, to discuss the rapidly evolving world of psychedelic therapy. The conversation focuses on the growing importance of proper safety protocols, education, and comprehensive training for facilitators working with psychedelic substances such as MDMA, psilocybin, and ketamine. Joe and Kyle emphasise how vital it is for facilitators, whether in underground or legal settings, to be thoroughly prepared to ensure both safety and effective therapeutic outcomes for their clients. A key theme in the discussion is the ongoing legal and medical advancements surrounding psychedelics in the U.S. The episode touches on the groundbreaking steps being taken in places like Oregon, where psychedelics have been fully legalised, and the upcoming FDA decision on MDMA-assisted therapy. Joe and Kyle highlight how this shifting landscape requires innovative training approaches that integrate both traditional therapy methods and newer, more flexible models that embrace non-directive frameworks. The podcast also delves into the challenges of the current lack of standardised accreditation for psychedelic therapists. With new state regulations beginning to take shape, there is hope that these standards will provide clearer guidelines for training future facilitators. Throughout the conversation, Joe and Kyle stress the importance of ongoing personal development and community support for those guiding others through psychedelic experiences. Facilitators must engage in their own inner work, cultivate patience, and seek mentorship to ensure ethical responsibility and trauma-informed care. Ultimately, the episode underscores the complexity of psychedelic therapy and the need for facilitators to be not only skilled in therapeutic techniques but also deeply aware of the broader cultural and ethical implications of working with psychedelics. For those interested in pursuing a career in this field, the episode provides information about Psychedelics Today's training programs, including their comprehensive 12-month course. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Joe Moore co-founded Psychedelics Today in 2016 with Kyle Buller. As CEO, Joe has co-created one of the planet's best-known psychedelic podcasts and training platforms. He combines over 20 years of avid psychedelic study and training with over 20 years of experience in software and multinational project management. Joe is a leading expert in transpersonal breathwork, a board member of the Psychedelic and Pain Association and the Psychedelic Medicine Coalition, and a sought-after international speaker on the intersecting subjects of psychedelic medicine and healing, breathwork, drug policy, medical innovation, international justice, and environmentalism. Kyle's interest in exploring non-ordinary states of consciousness began at the age of 16 when he suffered a traumatic snowboarding accident. After this near-death experience, Kyle's life changed dramatically. Kyle subsequently earned his B.A. in Transpersonal Psychology from Burlington College, where he focused on studying the healing potential of non-ordinary states of consciousness by exploring shamanism, Reiki, local medicinal plants and plant medicine, Holotropic Breathwork, and psychedelic psychotherapy. Kyle has been studying Dreamshadow Transpersonal breathwork with Lenny and Elizabeth since October 2010.Kyle earned his M.S. in clinical mental health counselling with an emphasis in somatic psychology from Prescott College. Kyle is a Licensed Associate Counsellor and offers psychotherapy services specializing in psychedelic integration, spiritual emergence, and ketamine-assisted psychotherapy. He talks about his early LSD experiences and how his interest in the philosophy of Plato and Alfred North Whitehead provided a framework and language for understanding a new mystical world where time and space were abstractions. He believes that while culture sees the benefits of psychedelics in economic terms, the biggest takeaway from non-ordinary states is learning that value is the essence of everything. And as this is being released on Bicycle Day, he discusses Albert Hofmann's discovery and whether or not it's fair to say that Hofmann intentionally had the experience he did on that fateful day. He also discusses: The end of Cartesian thinking and the need for a new understanding of reality that incorporates the insights of quantum mechanics How philosophy has been taught as an intellectual endeavor, and how we need to embrace the practical and conceptual side of life John Dewey and quantitative thinking, William James and pragmatism, and was Aristotle a Platonist? In this episode, Joe interviews Christine Calvert: Licensed Chemical Dependency Counselor and certified Holotropic Breathwork® facilitator. She talks about how addiction led her to breathwork, how breathwork has helped her over the years, how breathwork can be a compliment to other self-work, and how becoming comfortable with breathwork first could be a very important stepping stone towards better understanding the psychedelic experience. She talks about how years of breathwork helped her navigate complicated states of consciousness, and the incredible benefit of learning to trust our body's capacity to heal itself.  She discusses using bodywork in sessions and the importance of having the experiencer be the one who requests it; how much a facilitator's past relationship with touch affects how they use touch; the risk in meditation vs. the safety of breathwork; the concept of learning self-awareness; how profound it is to be witnessed in breathwork's dyad model; and why researching and creating guidelines for this kind of work seems impossible. — Holotropic Breathwork is based on the belief that each of us is guided by our own intrinsic wisdom, and that the opportunity for healing past traumas of the physical and/or emotional body or opportunities for opening a new doorway to creative flow lies within us - always available - as we become more aware of our natural ability to awaken to our authentic selves and our highest potential. Journeying in this expanded state, our psyche allows select biographical, transpersonal or mythological/spiritual material from our internal landscape to float to the surface of our conscious mind. As we feel safely supported, we are more likely to give ourselves the space and permission to work with and integrate this material for deeper understanding. The term ‘holotropic' means “moving toward wholeness.” Valeria interviews Yulia Meshoyrer  — She is a Russian-born distinguished Grof-certified Holotropic Breathwork facilitator dedicated to the transformative technique developed by Stan and Christina Grof.  Her extensive qualifications include an MA degree in General Psychology from Russia and an MA in Transpersonal Psychology from Sofia University. In this episode, Kyle interviews John H. Buchanan, Ph.D.: certified Holotropic Breathwork practitioner; contributing co-editor for Rethinking Consciousness: Extraordinary Challenges for Contemporary Science; and author of the new book, Processing Reality: Finding Meaning in Death, Psychedelics, and Sobriety. Recorded shortly after a week-long philosophy and breathwork conference which they both attended, they mostly dig into the challenging philosophical concepts of Alfred North Whitehead: how everything is made up of a feeling; how everything is relational and we all feel each other's experiences; how Whitehead defined occasions and how moments of experience are accessing the totality of the past; and how neurology and the mind-brain interaction impacts human experience. This analysis leads to a lot of questions: Is the past constantly present, in that it is an active influencer on all our actions? When we relive a past event, where does that live in our minds vs. bodies? Are we tapping into a universal storehouse of past events, or are we tapping into past lives (or into others past lives)? When we sense that someone is looking at us, what is that? He also discusses his realization that the experiential element of non-ordinary states of consciousness was the most important; his entry point into breathwork; why breathwork creates a perfect atmosphere for conversation; reincarnation and the idea of being reincarnated into other dimensions; the concept of objective immortality and how ripple effects from a single moment continue onward; and the fallacy of misplaced concreteness and psychoid experiences: Are they real beyond our psyche? In this episode, Kyle interviews Ted Riskin, LCSW: psychotherapist running group KAP sessions and certified in Core Energetics, Internal Family Systems, and Holotropic Breathwork, which he has taught in various forms for 26 years. He discusses group ketamine-assisted psychotherapy: how he runs sessions, why being welcomed and loved in a group seems to be a bigger factor than the psychedelic, how he came to combine IFS with ketamine or breathwork, and why exploring the parts work of IFS seems to work so well with non-ordinary states of consciousness. And he talks about two complications we often don't think about with Group KAP: the challenge of getting our different parts to all truly consent to an experience (and how do you get them to?), and how very safe spaces can inspire oversharing, and sadly, subsequent shame. He discusses knowing when to use a non-directive approach vs. intervening; how people often learn more about themselves as a sitter; using core energetics before experiences to move energy we're often afraid to work with; the importance of embracing anger (when necessary); memory reconsolidation and bringing exiles from the past into the present; the concept of double bookkeeping; and finding the magic in realizing that sometimes, just being there (“being a useless person” as he says) is all that's needed. Holotropic breathwork, developed by Stan and Christina Grof, [BP1] was developed as a method to induce altered states of consciousness after LSD was made illegal and therefore no longer available. Christine Calvert is a certified Holotropic Breathwork facilitator who discusses the history and development of holotropic breathwork and how it is related to psychedelic-assisted therapy. With decades of experience, Christine highlights the importance of supporting the inner wisdom of clients and being non-intrusive as a facilitator. We also discuss the importance of doing one's own work before taking on the role of facilitating altered states of consciousness and the value of group formats for collective healing experiences. Notes from episode:The role of preparation. The importance of subtly tuning into the inner healer, the breath as a vehicle for tapping into our innate capacity to heal and to be whole. Why you may never hear the phrase “Happy Birthday” in the same way again. Group formats for altered states of consciousness, the collective inner healer, participate in healing in the collective spaceThe sitter role is simply to witness. The simple experience of being witnessed by another human being. Something happens in the group space that can't happen in the solo place. This is how we used to heal, how our ancestors knew how to do it. As long as we always remember that we are apprenticing to the medicine, to this space, that is a great posture to remind us to always do our own work. If we continue to do our own work, there is at least a relationship with accountability and self honesty, or at least a capacity to stay in relationship with that. Practice: write down everything that I am bringing into the space before doing a facilitator. Helpful to get into right relationship in my body, monitoring my own need for intimacy and connection, etc. “The facilitator is the most important person in the room, and is not important at all.” – Teacher saying“People here not because of us, but in spite of us.”We are the support staff to the inner wisdom, essentially. Christine Calvert (teacher and module facilitator) is a Licensed Chemical Dependency Counselor and a certified Holotropic Breathwork® facilitator. She is the founder of Tribe, a conscious sober living home for men in Austin, TX, focusing on a transpersonal and Holotropic approach to recovery and healing. In addition to bringing Holotropic Breathwork® and other experiential workshops to mental health and addiction facilities, she is passionate about the ethics and integrity needed in facilitating expanded-state work; supporting the integration of Holotropic and psychedelic sessions through somatic resourcing; and creative expression, personal ritual, and group support. Her own personal healing journey was greatly influenced by the Holotropic perspective and she feels deeply dedicated to sharing this work with those seeking healing. She enjoys finding ways to weave her personal and professional experience of different therapeutic and spiritual systems such as Shamanism, Somatic Experiencing, Jungian psychology, attachment theory, and mindfulness practices into her work with others. Christine is currently studying to become a Naturopathic Doctor and maintains a private counseling and consulting practice in addition to facilitating Holotropic Breathwork® nationally.

Astrology isn't something you "believe in" - that's like saying you "believe" the Earth is round. We get into this in the podcast. My guest today is the archetypal astrologer Dr Renn Butler, who studied with Stanislav Grof and Richard Tarnas at the Esalen Institute in California beginning in 1980, certifying as a Holotropic Breathwork® facilitator in 1989, and recertifying in Grof® Breathwork in 2023. We also talk about Stan Grof's work and his collaboration with Tarnas on the perinatal matrices.Renn offers workshops in British Columbia and abroad, as well as archetypal astrology consultations with clients around the world. I had a session with him this year and could not recommend him highly enough!! Renn's first book, Pathways to Wholeness, is about astrology and psychedelic experiences, was published in 2014, followed by The Archetypal Universe in 2018, which focuses on dreams, and The Astrology of Love and Relationships in 2022, which is about relationships. Matthew and Jessica have been friends and colleagues for 15 years, first in San Francisco, California and now in the Caribbean, with Matthew and his family in Santa Marta, Colombia and Jessica and her family in Siesta Key, Florida. The introduction of this episode may give you flashbacks to high school English classes, but you'll be fine. Today we explore the power of making a choice; choosing to see the light, being of service, and improving all that you can. My guest is Christian de la Huerta, a sought-after spiritual teacher, personal transformation coach, and leading voice in the breathwork community. He has traveled the world offering inspiring and transformational retreats combining psychological and spiritual teachings with lasting and life-changing effects. His new book, Awakening the Soul of Power, has won multiple awards and was described by Gloria Estefan as "a balm for the soul of anyone searching for truth and answers to life's difficult questions." We explore choice, empowerment, and freedom. Christian sees heroism in pausing, taking a breath, and choosing your action instead of automatic reactions. There is tremendous heroism in doing the inner work, facing our demons and shadows instead of numbing out and self-medicating. Do not underestimate the courage it takes to own and share our feelings. Christian shares the tool he finds best for healing past trauma effectively and quickly. We discuss the need to update the traditional roles of men, including the provider and the explorer. The conversation also touches on our conflicted relationship with power. Topics and Questions 2:02 - The opportunity at the dawn of each new year to make a choice. 3:24 - You write about personal power and heroism. Episode 58 - Rick Doblin, PhD - MAPS: Past, Present and Future This all new episode of the MAPS podcast needs no introduction. Our very own Rick Doblin beams in with Zach and takes us through an oral history of MAPS from the early fledgling days to the leader in psychedelic research that it is today. Also, the talk gets personal when Rick reminisces on memories of Timothy Leary, Laura Huxley and Ram Dass from the first Psychedelic Science conference in 1990. This interview is a beautiful glimpse into the history of psychedelic research and one mans passion for a mission that many said could not be fulfilled. It is not to be missed.  Rick Doblin, Ph.D., is the founder and executive director of the Multidisciplinary Association for Psychedelic Studies (MAPS). He received his doctorate in Public Policy from Harvard's Kennedy School of Government, where he wrote his dissertation on the regulation of the medical uses of psychedelics and marijuana and his Master's thesis on a survey of oncologists about smoked marijuana vs. the oral THC pill in nausea control for cancer patients. His undergraduate thesis at New College of Florida was a 25-year follow-up to the classic Good Friday Experiment, which evaluated the potential of psychedelic drugs to catalyze religious experiences. He also conducted a thirty-four year follow-up study to Timothy Leary's Concord Prison Experiment. Rick studied with Dr. Stanislav Grof and was among the first to be certified as a Holotropic Breathwork practitioner. His professional goal is to help develop legal contexts for the beneficial uses of psychedelics and marijuana, primarily as prescription medicines but also for personal growth for otherwise healthy people, and eventually to become a legally licensed psychedelic therapist. He founded MAPS in 1986, and currently resides in Boston with his wife and puppy, with three empty rooms from his children who have all graduated college and begun their life journeys
