In this episode, Joe interviews Kat Murti: executive director of Students for Sensible Drug Policy (SSDP), the largest nationwide network of students fighting to replace the War on Drugs with policies rooted in evidence, compassion, and human rights. She talks about how she became interested in drug policy, which not surprisingly aligns with the many problems of The War on Drugs: how it's a war on people, personal liberty, and our communities; how laws are not effective in enforcing morality; and how getting in trouble with the law often incentivizes more illegal activity. We all know that our current system doesn't work and that the drug war no longer appeals to most reasonable people, but how can we move towards sensible policy? She discusses previous successes (both at SSDP and before), and some of their current projects, from the work they're doing with fentanyl strip training and distribution, to education work at festivals and their program, “Just Say Know.” She talks about: How drug policy isn't going to look the same everywhere and shouldn't: How do we effectively use different models in different places together for the benefit of everyone? The dangers of forcing drug users through drug courts and treatment centers The repealing of Oregon's Measure 110 and how it's unfair to blame its failure on problems that already existed in the state Their new focus on how the War on Drugs specifically affects women and reproductive rights, inspired by Louisiana recently scheduling Mifepristone and Misoprostol and much more. The SSDP's biggest battle now is fighting the DEA's attempted scheduling of DOI and DOC, two compounds that have been used in research for decades and pose no real threat to safety – which would drastically derail a ton of research. They just completed a 10-day hearing with the DEA. Watch Joe and Hamilton Morris' breakdown here, and stay tuned to SSDP and PT for updates. For links, head to the show notes page.
Kat Murti is the Executive Director of SSDP, Students For Sensible Drug Policy, an advocacy org working to end the War On Drugs and ensure access to research and civil liberties. She joins us today to raise public awareness of the proposed scheduling of DOI and DOC by the United States Drug Enforcement Administration. DOI and DOC are two research chemicals that are vitally important to psychedelic research - SSDP is taking the DEA to court to ensure that these two chemicals remain unscheduled, a process which we discuss on the episode today in addition to covering a lot of ground around drug policy reform and the War On Drugs history and aims at large. In the 1990s, a new federal law banning any student with a drug conviction from receiving financial aid led to the formation of Students for Sensible Drug Policy (SSDP). Created online by a swarm of young activists in the early days of the internet, the organization quickly grew into the largest student organization in the United States. Today SSDP has over 5,000 active members on 300 college campuses around the world, all of them dedicated to advocating for the legalization of cannabis and the end of the War on Drugs. To hear the antiestablishment history of this game-changing organization, Abdullah and Bean sit down with founding member Kris Krane, who has also served as SSDP's Executive Director. The Upreneur podcast has partnered up with SCORE, hosted by Jeremy Straub, to help bring engaging conversations with today's top leaders and business owners. In today's episode, we spoke with Jeffrey Zucker, Co-Founder of Green Lion Partners, about how the cannabis industry is growing and is in need of lawyers, accounts, and more. We talked about how Jeffrey jumps headfirst into his entrepreneurial endeavors and figures it out. Green Lion Partners is a Denver-based business strategy firm focused on early-stage development amongst firms in the cannabis industry. Green Lion has also developed Natural Order Supply, an agricultural supply company. Mike Bologna and Jeffrey Zucker, Co-Founders of Green Lion Partners, also co-own Dip Devices, which brings high-end, innovative products to the ever-expanding vaporizer market. Green Lion Partners is a business strategy firm focused on providing consulting services, direct investments, and strategic partnerships to early-stage companies in the regulated cannabis industry. Their core focus is elevating the public perception of the industry while pushing it forward toward more sophisticated and socially responsible business practices. As a result of Jeffrey's and Green Lion's combined accomplishments in the industry, Marijuana Policy Project, the largest organization in the U.S. focused solely on ending marijuana prohibition, selected Jeffrey to serve on the Board of Directors. Jeffrey is always open to hearing new business ideas of any kind and is happy to get involved with projects, people, and ideas in which he believes. His business decisions are determined not only based upon making a profit but also—inspired by his late father's mission of Tikkun Olam (repair of the world)—with the goal of improving the lives of others as much as possible. In this episode, we talk with Vilmarie Narloch, Psy.D as she shares how her journey through addiction research, humanistic healing, policy reform, and academia intersect at her place in the psychedelic field. Vilmarie wears many hats but is best known for her work at Students for Sensible Drug Policy (SSDP) as Director of Education. She received her M.A. in Counseling and Psychological Services at St. Mary's University of Minnesota and went on to pursue a doctorate of psychology in clinical psychology at Roosevelt University (where she also became a member of SSDP). Focused on patient-first clinical work and expanding access to harm reduction services, Vilmarie focused her research on substance use disorder and destigmatizing drug use. With her dissertation, she revealed that students were seeking unbiased, evidence-based information about drugs, and she later delivered by establishing SSDP's national Just Say Know peer drug education program. Vilmarie also launched SSDP's Psychedelic Pipeline, a project that bridges student mentees entering the psychedelic space to mentors who currently investigate psychedelic medicine. When Vilmarie is not ending the war on drugs, she is also co-creating Sana Healing Collective, a safe haven and patient-forward ketamine assisted psychotherapy clinic. Delighted to have Ger Roe on the podcast to discuss how Ireland's drug policies effects the youths in Dublin that he works with as a Youth Worker. Gerard Roe is an award nominated youth worker, activist and father from Dublin. Gerard is a graduate Social Scientist of Maynooth University and has been involved in youth work for over a decade working in a number of youth projects across Dublin's most disadvantaged areas, including eight years in a groundbreaking national youth organisation. Gerard has led the development of two drug outreach services and ran a number of harm reduction campaigns in his career. Gerards specialties are in harm reduction and drug education and has a particular interest in the area of drug policy reform. Gerard is an advocate for legalization of cannabis and decriminalisation of drugs for personal use and went before the Dept of Justice, Defence and Equality to argue in favour of decriminalisation resulting in a report in favour of this approach. Gerard's work has also seen him play a role in the development of Ireland's current national drug strategy Reducing Harm-Supporting Recovery. Gerard featured in an RTE documentary which sparked a nationwide debate on how Ireland needs to change its approach to dealing with drugs. Gerard is passionate about helping young people reach their full potential and keeping them safer from the harms of drugs and drug policy. This week I speak to Rob Hofmann, who is the Movement Building Fellow for the Northeast, Midwest, and Pacific Regions with the Students for Sensible Drug Policy or SSDP. SSDP is “the largest global youth-led network dedicated to ending the War on Drugs.” (source) This is the first of the episodes on the topic of cannabis legalization. With Rob, we're going to talk about cannabis policy more broadly and what constitutes well-thought out legislation in his eyes. The conversation with Rob starts with how he got involved in drug policy activism in the first place. We then talk about the ballot measures from election day in November 2020 and the MORE Act that passed through the House of Representatives on Friday, December 4th. Rob and I then talked about some general cannabis policy priorities going into 2021 and 2022. We also touch on the topic of coops and the role that they can play. If you're interested in getting involved in SSDP, you can reach out to Rob on Robert@ssdp.org. I also added links to SSDP in the show notes. You can learn more about SSDP on their site (https://ssdp.org/about/) or by following them on Twitter (@ssdpglobal). This week, I interview Julia Hilbert, who is the chair of the board of directors at Students of Sensible Drug Policy, the president of DanceSafe Pittsburgh, and works part-time doing direct service amongst other things at Prevention Point Pittsburgh. We talk about her journey getting into harm reduction and drug policy activism, how you can get involved if you're interested, what harm reduction is, what role stigma plays, and what changes she hopes to see during her career You can learn more at: SSDP.org DanceSafe.org Pppgh.org Feel free to reach out over email (DrugsHistory@gmail.com) or Twitter (@DrugsHistory). In this episode, Giulia is in conversation with Hannah Head (@_HannaHead_), a PhD student, an activist, and a member of Students for Sensible Drug Policy (SSDP) UK (@ssdpuk). We talk about the values of harm reduction, the role of drugs in young people's lives, her work with SSDP and the need for universities to drop the ‘just say no' rhetoric and develop more realistic, responsible and active harm reduction approaches to drug use by students to prevent drug related deaths.
On this episode, we are taking a trip with Clayton Ickes, president of Psychedelic Club. We talk about our tendency to see psychedelics as a “savior,” what a legit psychedelic renaissance would look like, and wrestle with thorny issues of colonization and privilege vis-à-vis movements around drug liberation. Oh, and there’s some light discussion of Japanese death cults. Afterwards, Emily and Sarah break down our weird tendency to make people into saviors, specifically in regards to RGB (fare thee well), and discuss how easy it is to make a reasonable, nuanced point that is well received on social media. https://www.psychedeliclub.com/ Featured music is “Travels” by Summer Alicia, courtesy of the artist. When night-time safety was a headline story, they saw it as an opportunity to build an even more vibrant and inclusive nightlife, supported by 24-hour transport, smarter policing and better services. This would have enabled NSW culture and economy to grow while making the city safer. Instead, NSW got lockout laws. READ MORE...

Betty Aldworth joins us by phone and shares the extent of the growing Cannabis market: "In a new state, there are going to be countless opportunities to influence. I think that if you are based in Missouri and you aren't already having a conversation about how you get placed on a working group or a task force, how you participate in the regulatory process in building up these laws, you are already behind the ball. These groups are being formed now."
Ministry of Extraction Episode #2 with Betty Aldworth: Students for Sensible Drug Policy, War on Drugs, and Cannabis Ministry of Extraction sheds light on the various interactions connected to the extraction phase of the seed to consumption journey. We hold conversations with scientists, inventors, engineers, marketers, chemists, farmers, and visionaries to understand the various approaches and interactions with cannabis plants and most importantly the human factor throughout the extraction experience. On Episode #2, we drop into a flow with Betty Aldworth and Matthew Anderson as we discuss the connections between SSDP, the war on drugs, and cannabis. Betty Aldworth joined the SSDP team in February 2014 as Executive Director and has since led the organization through its most substantial growth: the member base and campuses on which SSDP is present have doubled; staff and offices supporting those members have tripled; global presence has quadrupled; as a result the policy change and education efforts members are leading have grown immeasurably. Since 2009, Betty has specialized in community outreach, public relations, advocacy, and policy reform as a consultant to or staffer for cannabis-related businesses and nonprofit organizations. She served as spokesperson and advocacy director for Colorado’s successful 2012 Campaign to Regulate Marijuana Like Alcohol, the collaborative committee responsible for legalizing, taxing and regulating marijuana for adults in Colorado, and was the Deputy Director of the National Cannabis Industry Association in 2013, the organization’s fastest year of growth. Prior to her work in marijuana policy and medical cannabis, she was a volunteer leadership professional with some of Denver’s most well-respected nonprofit organizations, ultimately leading a team of 4,000 volunteers who contributed over 40,000 hours of service annually. We're releasing this week's episode a couple days early this week, and when you take a listen, you'll hear why! Dr. Vilmarie Narloch and Amy Hildebrand from Students for a Sensible Drug Policy at DePaul, join us to discuss their advocacy for a non-binding referendum on cannabis legalization in Cook County, Illinois. We also discuss SSDP's "Just Say Know" peer education curriculum, what it's like to build a chapter almost from the ground up, and the importance of sensible drug policies at the local and federal levels. (And, no, we don't mean "great commercials showing how bad [drug abuse] is".)
Today on Alternative Talk our host is joined by Vilmarie Narloch. Vilmarie is the Drug Education Manager at Students for Sensible Drug Policy. In this role, Vilmarie oversees the development and implementation of the SSDP Peer Education program, which is a training program for SSDP Members to become certified to deliver our drug education program, Just Say Know, to their peers. Vilmarie is passionate about reforming drug education in the U.S. and abroad, and has dedicated years of study on the topic for her dissertation. Vilmarie has taken on this position because as an organization driven by students with exceptional knowledge on drug policy and other drug use related issues, SSDP is uniquely positioned and qualified to be developing a drug education program. Additionally, Vilmarie educates staff and the network on the current state of research and treatment issues with regard to substance use disorders and mental health. Vilmarie aims to aid in the connection of policy and practice by helping our network understand the impact of policy on access to treatment and care while utilizing the latest research.
Betty Aldworth returns and has a lot going on with the SSDP conference as well as ensuring that all the SSDPers are out there supporting ballot measures for cannabis legalization and all sensible drug policy for that matter. We discuss deschedling as potential focus for the cannabis community and while that dialogue should certainly occur, with the Rohrabacher Blumenaur Amendment holding on by a thread, 280E being no where near the tax bill, not to mention the proclivities of our attorney general, Betty’s thought is to continue to focus on moving the needle state by state. Oh and by the way, you can help by going to SSDP.org/match and donating now. And donate whenever at SSDP.org.

In the 1980s, growing recreational use of Ecstasy led to the criminalization of the drug and the formation of MAPS in 1986. Now, MAPS is about to embark on FDA-approved Phase 3 research to make MDMA-assisted psychotherapy a legal treatment for PTSD. This talk will discuss the historical implications of MDMA use and the plans for ongoing clinical research.Rick Doblin, Ph.D., is the founder and executive director of the Multidisciplinary Association for Psychedelic Studies (MAPS). He received his doctorate in Public Policy from Harvard's Kennedy School of Government, where he wrote his dissertation on the regulation of the medical uses of psychedelics and marijuana and his Master's thesis on a survey of oncologists about smoked marijuana vs. the oral THC pill in nausea control for cancer patients. His undergraduate thesis at New College of Florida was a 25-year follow-up to the classic Good Friday Experiment, which evaluated the potential of psychedelic drugs to catalyze religious experiences. He also conducted a thirty-four year follow-up study to Timothy Leary's Concord Prison Experiment. Rick studied with Dr. Stanislav Grof and was among the first to be certified as a Holotropic Breathwork practitioner. His professional goal is to help develop legal contexts for the beneficial uses of psychedelics and marijuana, primarily as prescription medicines but also for personal growth for otherwise healthy people, and eventually to become a legally licensed psychedelic therapist. He founded MAPS in 1986, and currently resides in Boston with his wife and one of three children (two in college).MONICA BARRATTDR MONICA BARRATT is a social scientist at the Drug Policy Modelling Program, part of Australia's National Drug and Alcohol Research Centre at the University of New South Wales. He is currently completing his Masters through research at the Melbourne Graduate School of Education, where he is undertaking a critical discourse analysis of school policies and resources as they relate to drug education, comparing both local and international examples. After completing the Grad. Dip in Teaching in 2015, Nick was perplexed at the lack of teacher training around student drug use and the silence of the education system on this issue, as well as the slow pace of drug reform more broadly. Inspired to learn more, and to advocate and research this area further, Nick helped found Students for Sensible Drug Policy Australia in 2016, setting up their second chapter at the University of Melbourne. Nick was instrumental in the UniMelb chapter's work in setting up a harm reduction program that would supply re-agent drug checking kits to students free of charge through the Student Union, and has travelled to numerous international conferences to represent this globally significant program. Nick draws upon his experience in nightclub and festival communities, as well as his experience volunteering with DanceWize as a Peer Educator and his policy and international experience with SSDP in both his teaching and his research.FIONA MEASHAMFiona Measham is co-founder & co-Director of ‘The Loop’. He trained at UCL medical school, graduating in 1997. He is interested in the developmental trajectory from child maltreatment to adult mental health disorders. Dr Sessa is currently a senior research fellow at Bristol, Cardiff and Imperial College London Universities, where he is conducting the UK's first clinical studies with MDMA-assisted therapy for the treatment of PTSD and alcohol dependence syndrome. In the last ten years he has worked on several UK-based human pharmacology trials as study doctor or as a healthy subject administering and receiving test doses of LSD, psilocybin, MDMA and ketamine. He is the author of several dozen peer-reviewed articles in the mainstream medical press and has written two books exploring psychedelic medicine; The Psychedelic Renaissance (2012) and To Fathom Hell or Soar Angelic (2015). In speaking publicly at universities and medical conferences, Dr Sessa is outspoken on lobbying for change in the current system by which drugs are classified in the UK, believing a more progressive policy of regulation would reduce the harms of recreational drug use and provide increased opportunities for clinical psychedelic research. He is a co-founder and director of the UK's Breaking Convention conference.

Download We have an awesome time speaking with SSDP's Drug Education Manager, Dr. Vilmarie Narloch. Vilmarie is making a big difference with drug safety in the US and internationally with SSDP's education program 'Just Say Know.' During the show we discuss Vilmarie's work with policy around the Good Samaritan laws and other impressive and impactful harm reduction projects. We also discuss some of the pressure from various elements in the government regressing rules, like some law enforcement offices refusing to use Narcannaloxone to help save the lives of people overdosing. This episode is a dose of compassion and gives perspective about the different impacts from the drug war and prohibition. If you are a student who wishes to get involved in drug policy work, please check out the work that SSDP is doing. If you do not have a chapter at your school or university, start one today! Vilmarie also joins us in our course Navigating Psychedelics for a master class featuring harm reduction strategies and more. Be sure to sign up today to learn more from Vilmarie and many others! About Students For Sensible Drug Policy (SSDP) Students for Sensible Drug Policy (SSDP) is the only international network of students dedicated to ending the war on drugs. At its heart, SSDP is a grassroots organization, led by a student-run Board of Directors. We create change by bringing young people together and creating safe spaces for students of all political and ideological stripes to have honest conversations about drugs and drug policy. Founded in 1998, SSDP is comprised of thousands of members at hundreds of campuses in countries around the globe. About Just Say Know Just Say Know is a series of drug education modules aimed at promoting open and honest dialogue around commonly used substances. The program aims to equip young people with harm reduction tools and skills as it relates to the specific substance, but can be applied to substance use generally. Students for Sensible Drug Policy believes that students should be an overall part of any campus and community prevention and intervention strategy. Our SSDP Peer Education program seeks to empower students in our network to analyze the relationship between drug policy and drug use by providing evidence-based drug information, teaching students to recognize and address dangerous behaviors and unhealthy attitudes, and promoting prosocial and harm reduction oriented behaviors and attitudes. Vilmarie earned her M.A. in Counseling and Psychological Services from Saint. Mary’s University of Minnesota, and a Psy.D. in Clinical Psychology. During her time at Roosevelt, she was a graduate research assistant with Roosevelt University’s Illinois Consortium on Drug Policy. Her work at ICDP included research support, report co-authorship and event planning and coordination. Vilmarie’s interests in drug education, access to treatment, and harm reduction policy and practice have led her to numerous projects, including the provision of counseling and harm reduction services to students at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and DePaul University, serving as a member of the Chicago Consortium on College Alcohol Harm Reduction, a predoctoral internship in the Adult Behavioral Services department in a local public health department, and a postdoctoral fellowship in a small prviate agency, where she provided therapy for individuals, couples, families, and groups in addition to supervising interns. Additionally, Vilmarie has been an adjunct instructor teaching undergraduate and graduate courses in psychology and substance use disorder treatment. She has dedicated her studies and clinical work to advance Harm Reduction as the standard of practice for substance use disorders. In doing so, she has sought opportunities to educate others in her field about harm reduction, including her students. Vilmarie’s dissertation, titled, “What Youth Want: Developing a Drug Education Curriculum Based on Youth Guidance and Evidence-Based Principles,” inspired her to continue to advocate for effective drug education on a professional level, which led to her current position at SSDP. Additionally, Vilmarie’s next personal career goal is to become trained to deliver psychedelic psychotherapy, which she considers to be the future of psychological practice.
Cannabis activist Shaleen Title joins us and takes us through her early realization that numbers made sense foisting her into accounting only to realize that drug policy was where she wanted to be. She joined SSDP and eventually had a hand in Amendment 64 passing in Colorado. She went to law school to get well versed in legal writing, political speech and how the law worked to serve her in her cannabis law reform work. She moved to the east coast and served in tax law for six months- her first day of orientation being the economic crash- which had her realize that the universe didn’t want or need her where she was- "Lehman just went down- but here’s your desk." Which is ultimately what set her on her ultimate path of full time cannabis policy.

Keith Stroup returns to share his thoughts on cannabis legalization in the wake of the election. We get Keith’s take on the state of affairs in each of the state that held votes in November. We dive in on Arkansas specifically and spend some time discussing that conservative southern state and what that means for the southern states which surround it. We talk about what happened to Montana’s old law before this new vote. And Keith shares that North Dakota shared him more than any other state. Based on his 40+ years of activism, he takes us through why he’ essentially bullish on the new administration not getting in the way of the cannabis movement and industry. But Betty Aldworth first joins us with an update from SSDP.
Betty Aldworth returns to give us an update on what SSDP is up to leading up to election day. She’s doing her best to ensure that the youngest voting demographic registers to vote and does in fact vote in this ridiculous, inane, disgusting yet remarkably important election. Marvin Washington discusses what good coaching or leadership means and then dive into his involvement in cannabis. He’s interested in ensuring that he doesn’t get pigeonholed simply as a former NFL player- he’s wants to understand and communicate what the whole plant can do for the masses. We finish by Marvin discussing how the cannabis movement can help the current societal racial unrest and ensure that all of society has the opportunity to be involved.
In this re-cap episode, we revisit a show from two years ago that featured a live panel discussion talking about the history of Students for Sensible Drug Policy. Produced by Shea Gunther.
Betty Aldworth of course of SSDP gives us an update from UNGASS- the UN General Assembly Special Session on the World Drug Problem- as they call it. Betty also shares feedback from the SSDP event as well as what folks should be doing in gearing up for the ballot measures this fall. As a bonus, we've got a piece from Episode 36, Betty's first appearance where she takes us through what it was like on the ground with Amendment 64. And if you're in Oakland Sunday, June 19th come on down for the Sensible Celebration: ssdp.org/events/sensible-celebration. Either way, we'd love your feedback, please feel free to send an email to engage@canneconomy.com.
Frances first got involved with SSDP in 2011, when she co-founded the Northwestern University chapter as a freshman. Although she had known that the War on Drugs was irrational and ineffective before attending college, it wasn't until she attended her first Midwest Regional Conference at Roosevelt University that she learned that drug policies were also unjust and inhumane. Since then, harm reduction has been a guiding principle behind all of her professional and personal pursuits, and she strives to educate people about the intersectionalities associated with the War on Drugs. In the drug policy world, Frances has served on SSDP's Board of Directors, and has worked with cannabis law and industry organizations to research cannabis policy in various states, and write and review applications for cannabis cultivation centers and dispensary licenses. On campus, she was involved with Sexual Health and Assault Peer Educators (SHAPE), Alpha Chi Omega sorority and and has served as the President of the Panhellenic Association.Goals for SSDP Peer Education Program1) To promote open and honest dialogue around drug use, drug policy and drug culture2) To reduce drug-related harms through a lens of love, rather than stigma or punishment3) Convey factual information about drugs, including how to access further resources4) Convey factual information about drug policy, including how to access further resourcesSSDP Peer Educators achieve this goal through three primary activities1) Facilitating small-group educational programs in residence halls, in fraternities and sororities, for other student groups and high schools, and during Orientation Week2) Providing students with informal counseling and professional referrals3) Planning campus-wide events in collaboration with other student groups, academic departments or community organizations4) Soliciting feedback and communicating to National staff to ensure that the program continually meets students' needs.Referenceshttps://www.youtube.com/user/thedrugpolicydealer/videoshttp://thedrugclassroom.comhttp://ssdp.org/justsayknow

Talking with SSDP members from the University of California Davis and Virginia Commonwealth University about good samaritan policies. Good Samaritan Policies, also known as medical amnesty, are life saving measures that enable people to make responsible decisions by sheilding them from punishment when they call for medical help during an emergency relating to alcohol or other drugs. More than 250 college/universities and over 25 states with some form of Good Samaritan policies. How did you first learn about GSP and what made you want to be a part of the growth? - Introduced freshman year and witnessed first hand the measures students went through to keep themselves save from overdosing and safe from the consequences of the law. What were the initial reaction from the students on campus when you talked to them about doing a campaign to better reform drug policies? - They were supportive but there was much fear, apprehension and uncertainty about what would happen to them as individuals. (housing, student loans) Threats of college tuition increases played a big part in their opinions.
Students for Sensible Drug Policy's Development Officer Lauren Padgett explains the ins and outs of SSDP and discusses the wild world of cannabis laws in the District of Columbia. Dr. Mitch explains the import of motivation in a world confused about a motivational syndrome.
Cannabis Curriculum is a show that highlights the work students are doing to end the War on Drugs. SSDP mobilizes and empowers students to participate in the political process, pushing for sensible policies while fighting back against a counterproductive Drug War. Uniting college campuses worldwide. Cannabis Curriculum will feature both current SSDP students and alumni who will discuss how they are engaged in drug policy reform on THE campus, local, state, federal, and international levels.
From NORML to SSDP to the NCIA, Kris Krane has legitimate cannabis industry bona fides. He takes us through how an early semester abroad informed his world view. He explains how his father's use of cannaibs as medicine ensured that he got involved in the movement as a colleage student. And he discusses his long tenure as an industry activist and how that activism informs how he runs his business.

The MU chapters of NORML and SSDP, in partnership with Show-Me Cannabis Regulation, hosted the Spring 2014 Missouri Cannabis Conference. The conference featured many speakers, including several grassroots activists from across Missouri. Amber Langston has been a cannabis activist  Marijuana Policy Project Communications Director Mason Tvert, was the keynote speaker. During the conference I had a chance to sit down with three of the event's speakers and get more details on what's happening in Missouri and around the country when it comes to legalizing cannabis. My first guest is Amber Langston. Amber was involved in passing Columbia's 2004 marijuana decriminalization ordinance while a student at Mizzou. She currently is a board member of Show-Me Cannabis Regulation and is the executive director of Women Against Prohibition, an organization dedicated to promoting women in politics and ending marijuana prohibition. Amber discusses a number of bills at the state level that have been seeing an encouraging amount of support. You can find links to these bills below: MO SB 951 – Allows medical marijuana for medical use and provides that it shall be taxed at 8 percent of the purchase price MO HB 2054 – Removes industrial hemp from controlled substance list and legalizes cultivation MO HB 2238 – Allows the Dept. of Agriculture to grow industrial hemp for research and use high-CBD extracts to treat epilepsy Next I talked with Sgt. Gary Wiegert, a 34-year veteran with the St. Louis Police Dept. and current lobbyist for both the St. Louis Tea Party Coalition and Show-Me Cannabis Regulation. Gary and I revisit the bills above that are active in Jeff City and talk about his journey from beat cop to pro-legalization lobbyist and the difficulties he's had to face from the St. Louis Police Dept. for taking an unpopular stand on sounder drug policies and actively lobbying state legislators to help move these bills along. Gary extended an invitation for any Missourians that would like to talk to their elected representatives at the state capitol. If you would like to visit Jeff City as a citizen lobbyist, feel free to contact Gary via email or phone: email: gary.wiegert@stlouisteaparty.com phone: (314) 562-6494 The episode ends with Mason Tvert, Communications Director for the Marijuana Policy Project, founder of Safer Alternative For Enjoyable Recreation (SAFER) and co-directer of the successful Amendment 64 campaign that legalized cannabis use in Colorado for adults 21 and older this past November. Mason talks about how important it is to focus on direct action, using carefully thought-out and highly visible political demonstrations and press releases to further your message. We talk about his recent protest at the Colorado Governor's Mansion as an example. We also talk about SAFER and Mason explains his success in changing minds coming almost completely from circulating the simple fact that marijuana is safer than alcohol. You can follow Mason on twitter @MasonTvert Thanks to MU NORML, MU SSDP and Show-Me Cannabis Regulation for organizing and hosting such a great event! I encourage everyone to find them on Facebook and Twitter using the links below and get involved in changing drug policy for the better! We were saddened to learn of the untimely death of Daniel Jabbour on April 13, 2014. Celebrating The Life Of Daniel Jabbour: An Intersection Of Psychedelics, Activism And Technology A transcript of this podcast is being created at https://www.fanscribed.com/transcripts/7-376-jabbor-coming-out-of-the-psychedelic-closet/ — we'll finish it with a handful of volunteers but the more who can help, the faster it will be completed. PROGRAM NOTES FOR THIS PODCAST: Guest speaker: Daniel Jabbour For anyone under the age of 30, this may be the most important podcast in the salon. Daniel Jabbor is a young entrepreneur and drug policy activist who, among many other accomplishments, and in a very short period of time, founded the now 4,000+ strong Psychedelic Society of San Francisco. Today's podcast features two of Daniel's talks, one from the recent Palenque Norte Lecture Series at the 2013 Burning Man Festival, and another from a psychedelic conference at which he detailed some of the successes of the SSDP, Students for a Sensible Drug Policy. No matter what your age, this is an important message for you to think about. If you know history, you know that quite often it is the young people who are the ones to change its course. These talks by Daniel Jabbor will give you more positive hope for the future than you have had in a long time. [NOTE: The following quotations are by Daniel Jabbour.] “The War on Drugs was started as a way to control and segregate various groups of society.” “The drug war is increasingly a war on youth. Over 50% of marijuana arrests in this country [the U.S.] are people under 29 years old.” “We desire to alter our state of consciousness. It's an evolutionary thing.” Download MP3 PCs – Right click, select option Macs – Ctrl-Click, select option The Psychedelic Society of San Francisco Students for Sensible Drug Policy (SSDP) Students for Sensible Drug Policy (SSDP) is the only international network of students dedicated to ending the war on drugs.
