In this moving episode, we delve into the story of Tobias Penno, an Australian academic, who questioned the social fabric of his community—a journey that led to tragedy and ultimately his transformative path into social work. During his travels in South America, he encountered ayahuasca, a powerful psychedelic that marked a clear division in his life: before and after. This profound experience reshaped his entire existence, turning him into a passionate advocate for psychedelics. Tobias shares his unique insights on integrating his South American experiences upon returning to Australia. He discusses the therapeutic potential of psychedelics and how these experiences have informed his academic research. His studies revealed ten key themes of ayahuasca's impact, highlighting the contrast between traditional medical systems and the valued community support within different cultural frameworks. He emphasises the necessity of confronting personal darkness to achieve growth and how ayahuasca serves as a guiding teacher, revealing deep truths about oneself and fostering acceptance. The conversation explores how his ayahuasca journeys have improved his practice as a therapist, particularly through embodiment work in psychedelic integration therapy. He outlines four core principles in this field: philosophy, knowledge, capacity, and practices. Psychedelics, he argues, enhance somatic awareness, and different substances offer unique benefits—for instance, ketamine aids dissociation, mushrooms offer spiritual and bodily insights, MDMA fosters self-compassion and trauma healing, and cannabis acts as a somatic psychedelic. We discuss the importance of preparation and the role of touch in therapy, the potential for psychedelics in couples and sex therapy, and the necessity of relational safety. He also sheds light on recent regulatory changes in Australia, including the rescheduling of psilocybin and MDMA for therapeutic use, and the establishment of the first psychedelic clinic in Melbourne. He highlights the critical role of AMAP in regulating psychedelic therapy and advocates for a multidisciplinary approach that balances medical, spiritual, and community elements. The episode also touches on the intersection of indigenous communities and psychedelic medicines in Australia. He explains the cultural dislocation experienced by descendants of colonizers and the need for all to reconnect with the land. Join us for an enlightening discussion on how psychedelics can reweave the social fabric, promote healing, and foster a deeper connection to ourselves and our communities. Tobias Penno is an academic and lecturer in Social Work at the University of Western Australia (U.W.A). His first academic publication titled ‘How Ayahuasca Offers Psychosocial Wellbeing' won the social work research prize in the school of Medicine, Dentistry and Health Science at U.W.A. in 2017. Tobias is the current chair of the Australian Psychedelic Society, and co-ordinates the Mental Health Professional Network's local Psychedelic Community of Practice. His primary research focus is on the therapeutic skillset for psychedelic-assisted psychotherapy. Tobias is passionate about the role of social work in this field and is currently part of the therapy team for Reset Mind Sciences, a Perth-based clinical trial using psychedelic medicine for treatment-resistant depression. John Penno and Maury Leyland started Leaft Foods to create a new food system by capturing the most abundant protein on the planet - Rubisco from green leaves. Leaft integrates with existing farming systems, extracting the Rubisco from common forage crops & producing a high-quality silage feed as a co-product. This reduces the total nitrogen loading in the farming system & lessens the carbon footprint of farming while producing products that taste good with high nutritional value. www.leaftfoods.com

Kathryn “Kat” Penno is a healthcare and business professional with a passion for hearing health. She is the Director of Hearing Health at Nuheara, a company that specializes in smart hearing aids driven by research. Prior to Nuheara, she was the President and Founder of the Hearing Collective. Her profession extends to Apple as an accessibility ambassador and serving as a guest lecturer at The University of Western Australia. In this episode… Complete rehabilitation seems like a fantasy for most people suffering from hearing loss. Many of the current solutions on the market are undertreating patients, catering to their wants more than their needs. There is a lot more that can be done, and fortunately, some companies are helping lead that charge. Nuheara creates research-based hearing aids which utilize smart data and create a personalized experience. A key figure at the business is Kat Penno, who brings her expertise in business and audiology to the table as their Director of Hearing Health. Her insights into complete treatment are pertinent along with her perspective on the current state of audiology. In this episode of the ListenUp! Podcast, Dr. Mark Syms interviews Kat Penno, the Director of Hearing Health at Nuheara, as they discuss what full rehabilitation looks like in hearing loss. Together, the two talk through Kat's own experiences in audiology and how treatments aren't doing enough to help patients. They also discuss why most hearing associations are so fragmented, the feedback loop of hearing loss, and how smart data can be used in hearing aids.
There are all sorts of reasons people seek out a psychedelic experience. For some, psychedelic-assisted therapy helps treat depression, some seek a deeply embodied therapeutic experience to traverse major trauma or grief, and some seek a little magic-an escape from the mundane of the day-to-day 9-5 grind. Whatever it may be, the depth of research and data proving the benefits of a well-integrated embodied psychedelic experience- is making the vision of psychedelic-assisted therapy becoming a recognised/available integrated form of healthcare a realistic vision for the near future. Today Mason chats with Tobias Penno, A government-funded psychedelic researcher and founder of ‘Psychedelic Healthcare'- a therapeutic service specialising in psychedelic integration work in Australia. Tobias talks about the benefits of psychedelic-assisted therapy and its capacity to open up the mind/body interface for deep therapeutic work and mystical experiences that can evolve consciousness. As with all journeys that crack open the psyche- The process of integration after any psychedelic experience (assisted or not) is an essential part of the journey. Tobias explains what integration after a psychedelic experience looks like when done well, the holistic self-work it takes to integrate meaningfully and embody the changes in your life, and how we can benefit from this type of therapy both on an individual and societal level. Mason and Tobias discuss the intersection of the Taoist herbs and a well-integrated psychedelic/plant medicine experience And how these majestic herbs and plant medicines can assist us on the journey towards becoming an evolved elder that embodies health and love in mind, body, spirit. "People come to psychedelics looking for this silver bullet, thinking it's going to suddenly change their life. I think it's important to slow that right down because they're not a silver bullet. They're not right for everyone. There are some people who probably don't need psychedelics- they're already so open, so connected already. They kind of already have an inner psychedelic state, either through other practices or just by nature of their personality. And for them, throwing psychedelics in the mix is probably just adding more chaos than they really need". - Tobias Penno Tobias and Mason discuss: -Ayahuasca. -Somatic work. -What is a Dieta? -Psychedelic integration. -Psychedelic healthcare. -Holotropic breath work. -Plant medicine journeys. -Psychedelic integration groups. -Relational dose psychedelic therapy. -Why psychedelics aren't for everyone. -Somatic mapping and psychotherapy. -Deeper psychotherapeutic types of work. -High-quality preparation before a psychedelic experience. -Psychedelics are great prep for good deep therapeutic work. -Personal and collective integration of a plant medicine journey. -What happens when there is no integration after psychedelics? Who Tobias Penno? Tobias Penno is a government-funded psychedelic researcher at the University of Western Australia (U.W.A.). His first academic publication titled 'How Ayahuasca Offers Psychosocial Wellbeing' won the social work research prize in the school of Medicine, Dentistry, and Health Science at U.W.A. in 2017. Tobias is the current chair of the Australian Psychedelic Society (WA Chapter) and his current doctoral research is titled 'Interpersonal Neurobiology in Psychedelic Healing'. Tobias is also the founder of ‘Psychedelic Healthcare', a therapeutic service specialising in psychedelic integration work in Australia. On this episode I am interviewing Lena Penno-Andersson who is an intuitive Coach and psychic Medium who combines mindset, the souls expression through the body and your energetic blueprint in guiding you deeper into a deeper consciousness about yourself. This leads you to be aware, get understanding about old wounds and triggers, blockages and limitations you have been experiencing. Her work brings her clients deep clarity, deep calmness and the focus for the next steps moving forward. This is an energetic clearance of the old and guidance to implement and allow the new energy to be embodied. Here are some of the things we dive into: - Lena's journey of getting in touch with her intuitive abilities and using it to serve others - Dealing with a "spiritual" or intuitive business in a secular society and overcoming the worry of what others may think - Lena's story with what she calls her "soul burnout". How it manifested and how she's been able to recover from it - The process she walks her clients through Lena has recently launched her first bigger group Program, called ”momentum” where she brings clients back home to themselves walking through the body, mind and soul connections, ground and center you, ending the loops in your mind and raising frequency into self esteem. In today's podcast, I spoke with Tobias Penno. Tobias is a Registered Social Worker with the 'Australian Association of Social Workers', and he has more recently focussed his career to become a mental health practitioner. Tobias believes that individuals have the wisdom necessary to work through their current life challenges, and sees his role as a ‘co-researcher' working collaboratively with his clients towards their growth and healing. Tobias weaves together elements from a variety of different modalities. One of his central aims is to help his clients ostensibly ‘re-author' the stories they tell themselves - about themselves.
In this week's episode of Energetically You, I had the pleasure of interviewing Lena Penno Andersson who is a spiritual and mindset coach. She stepped into her higher mission during her hardest time over the past years - the complete burnout of her physical and mental wellness. But little did she know that she was transformed like a Phoenix out of the ashes, into a powerful version of her higher self. Through the hardship of a burnout she was forced to let go of everything she knew she could handle. Connect with Lena @iaminsoulflow The topics we touched on: How burnout led her to a new direction in life to help others. How her strong intuition and years of coaching skills as an athlete lead her to dive deep into her true essence and embrace her spirituality. What is the number one mistake people make after recovering from burnout? The importance of sacred sisterhood and asking for help. How modern motherhood is performative, fear-based, leading to overwhelm and not sustainable. Thank you for listening! Dr David Penno - Stop Fighting Against Flesh And Blood by Seminary Marketing
Today on the show I speak with Mama of 2 Emma Penno who lives in remote WA in Port Headland. Emma herself was a c-section baby and so were her 3 siblings. Emma believed for a long time that c-sections were the safest and best option. But, fast forward to her first pregnancy Emma intuitively knew she wanted a natural birth but lost her her first baby at 8 weeks. She fell pregnant for the second time shortly after and had a straight forward physiological birth in hospital. After this birth she decided to freebirth her 2nd son and although she did have prenatal care at the hospital she was always in her power and had a very intuitive pregnancy and birth. Her second sons birth was so simple that her husband came home only a mere hour before he was earth side. When I asked Emma to be on the podcast she said - I don't know what I'd say about it because my freebirth was really a non event. And I replied - that is what I love about it. We also talk about womb regression, how important it is to work on yourself and spirit babies. Enjoy this conversation a very simple but still spiritual birth. More about Emma: Emma is a curious, independent, wild woman. Also, a Mother of two boys living in the remote town of Port Hedland, Western Australia. It was after the birth of Emma's first baby she became really passionate about birth, to then realise 4 years later that her passion for the way we are born actually began at the time of her own birth. After spending the last 6 years understanding more about why and how we birth like we do and creating a business, Emma has shifted her focus to mastering the art of honouring a 'slow' Mother phase, for herself and her family. This looks like getting back to basics, connecting to herself through her inner cycles and nature, slowing down her days and bringing more ritual into her life. From seeing freebirth as dangerous and risky, to thinking a c section would be safer, here is Emma's story of freebirthing her own baby. Photo Credit - Bobbi Lockyer/@Hedlandphotographer

Mes mélodies me viennent naturellement. He's the author of a new book about the global migration crisis, Rescue: Refugees and the Political Crisis of Our Time (Simon & Schuster/TED Books). On February 19, 2018, Miliband gave a lecture on this topic as an American Academy in Berlin, as an Airbus Distinguished Visitor. We sat down with him afterwards to discuss the challenges facing the 65 million worldwide refugees, the challenges facing the nations that are taking them in, and the state of the international liberal order. He most recently served as US assistant secretary of defense for international security affairs, and most recently authored the book The Long Game: How Obama Defied Washington and Redefined America’s Role in the World. On November 16, the renowned Canadian philosopher Charles Taylor was at the American Academy to deliver the 2017 Fritz Stern lecture, “Democratic Degeneration: Three Easy Paths to Regression.” Taylor’s talk addressed a concern held by increasing numbers of thoughtful people in recent years: that democracy is sliding backwards—losing ground internationally to authoritarian rule, voter apathy, and the slogans of populist rhetoric. To understand more about Taylor’s thoughts on the subject, we arranged a discussion between him and American Academy fellow Dilip Gaonkar, a politial theorist at Northwestern University and Taylor’s decades-long colleague at the the Center for Transcultural Studies. We recorded their discussion at the Institute for Advanced Sustainability Studies, in Potsdam, where Taylor was a short-term fellow. Host: R. Jay Magill Photo: Ralph K. Penno
On this episode of "Beyond the Lecture," we sat down with political scientist Nicholas Eberstadt to discuss the origins and causes of the decline of work for American men. "Men without Work" is the title Eberstadt’s latest book. It’s about the radical decline in employment of working age American men over the past half-century. This worrying trend is not about a lack of available jobs, however. It evidences instead something even more worrisome: a decline in skilled labor, mass exits from the labor force, opioid addiction, and the resulting lack of motivation to work at all. Eberstadt is the Henry Wendt Chair in Political Economy at the American Enterprise Institute, in Washington, DC, and a senior adviser to the National Bureau of Asian Research. A Bosch Fellow in Public Policy at the American Academy in 2008, he was back in early November as the Kurt Viermetz Distinguished Visitor. Host: R. Jay Magill Photo: Ralph K. Penno
On this edition of "Beyond the Lecture," we sat down with New York Times columnist Roger Cohen. On the evening of September 28, 2017, Cohen spoke at the American Academy -- as a John W. Kluge Distinguished Visitor -- about the fate of the postwar order in the age of Donald Trump. We sat down with Cohen to discuss the topic more personally, and to hear his thoughts on a few related topics. Host: R. Jay Magill Photo: Ralph K. Penno
