She had stumbled across an ad that the building was for sale in the local newspaper and decided to take a drive out to Barry's Bay to take a look and knew this was the next chapter in her life. Liz used to run Sexapalooza, an adult tradeshow, dedicated to entertaining and educating its visitors on sex and sexuality and also was the editor of a magazine. Tonight's guest, Santiago, was visiting his girlfriend, at her home, in Barry's Bay, in Central-Northern Ontario, Canada, when he had his encounter. It was getting late, about 2 AM, so he decided to head home. He only lived 200 meters, or so, from her, so he didn't have far to go. Normally, no matter how late it was, he'd walk home without any concerns for his safety. That night, though, something didn't feel right to him. He felt as if his safety just might have been at risk. When he got to a stand of hedges, at the edge of her property, he decided to peek around them, to see if there was anything he should be concerned about on the other side. When he did that, he saw that there WAS something to be concerned about. Ben grew up in Barry's Bay, Ontario in the Ottawa Valley, cycling and paddling. Growing up being self sufficient and self propelled became a focus for Ben and after convincing his parents, he took his first big bike trip as a teen from Pembroke, Ontario to Niagara Falls which kick started his desire for cycling long distances. He wanted to find a way to still do what he loved and make a career out of it so after a Guiding course, he was off and running. He saw that TDA Global Cycling was offering a Silk Road expedition and sent them his resume. His persistence paid off and soon he was guiding a trip from Istanbul, Turkey to Beijing, China on the Silk Road.For Ben, one of the most meaningful parts about being a guide is witnessing his guests grow and learn on tour. He said, people don't give themselves enough credit. They are resilient and he finds seeing them progress very rewarding.Ben works for Wilderness Tours and is a lead instructor of a two year Outdoor Adventure Guide Diploma Program through Algonquin College. We don't have to drive into town for bread and eggs, we don't have to buy bread in plastic bags or store the bread in plastic, and we don't have to ingest all those questionable ingredients that are listed on bread from the grocery store.
