I think I first became interested in borders during my first trip abroad when we spent an enjoyable summer holiday crisscrossing the borders between Holland, France and Belgium. I was only 9 years old but I can clearly remember my excitement at crossing a border into the unknown. Fast forward to the present and I'm still fascinated by borders, taking any opportunity to cross one if I can. In this episode I'd like to talk about two very different border towns, on the border between England and Scotland. You may be surprised to hear there is a marked border between 2 nations in the same country, there's no checkpoint or anything like that but thanks to what's usually a large sign or a flag, we always know where we are. Perhaps one of the reasons I like borders so much is because border towns are usually a bit different from others, sometimes they are a bit eccentric or quirky like Hay on Wye in Wales where one of the local residents actually declared himself king and the town independent in the 1970s, you can check this on Google if you don't believe me! Or perhaps they have their own identity quite distinctive from either side of the border they are on. Whichever way you look at it, border towns are interesting places, well worth spending a bit of time in and often with a fascinating story to tell. The first place I'd like to tell you about is Gretna Green, it's the first town in Scotland or the last town in Scotland if you are heading south on the west coast. It has a population of around 2,700 but every year about 5000 weddings take place there. It's been a popular place for weddings since the 18th century thanks to a difference in the marriage laws between Scotland and England. The 1754 Marriages Act prevented couples who were under the age of 21 in England and Wales getting married unless they had their parent's permission. In Scotland this law did not apply so people began crossing the border so they could legally get married without needing permission. So Gretna Green became a very popular place for couples to elope to or in other words, to run away to get married, maybe even against their families wishes. Most weddings were conducted by blacksmiths and still today you can get married at the blacksmiths shop with services performed over a blacksmiths anvil. Is it romantic or tacky? Opinion is divided but still today the wedding industry is thriving and people come from all over the world to get married at Gretna Green. Over on the East coast, just 2 and a half miles across the border into England lies the town of Berwick Upon Tweed. This highly contested town was fought over by both sides for many many years and in fact changed hands more than 13 times, finally becoming part of England in 1482. What was so important about the town? Well it was very important, trading with France and Belgium and one of the largest ports in the UK at one time. So extremely important economically for Scotland. Berwick Upon Tweed has always remained close to Scotland, the Berwick Rangers football club even today, plays in a Scottish football league and in the town you'll find a Scottish church, street names and Scottish banks. The river Tweed which flows through the town is also a Scottish river. However, these days a third identity has emerged, that of Berwicker. Some people from the town no longer see themselves as Scottish or English but as Berwickers or natives of Berwick. With research showing that 25% of residents identify themselves as Scottish, 25% as English but 50% as Berwickers first and foremost. So maybe whether Berwick is part of Scotland or England doesn't really matter. It's a melting pot of both identities and most importantly, it's an incredibly beautiful town to visit with a long and interesting history So if you do visit Scotland, make a stop at one of our border towns and delve into some of our most fascinating history. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/adventuresinenglish/message
Playing football, managing professional teams and teaching the nation's youth is a unique combination. But in this week's episode of Weekend Bigots, Terry Christie and Tom Hendrie discuss the reality of juggling these roles. Christie, an ex-headmaster and manager of Meadowbank Thistle, Stenhousemuir and Alloa Athletic, is widely regarded as one of the best part-time managers this country has produced, and gained fame as the duffle-coat wearing cup shock specialist. Tom Hendrie is a former manager of St Mirren, Berwick Rangers and Alloa Athletic, and was once a pupil of Christie’s at Forrester High School in Edinburgh before going on - like his friend and mentor - to play professionally for Dundee FC. They both acknowledge that religious rivalries play a part in the Old Firm, and explain how much of this is learned behaviour from school. They also discuss how both sectarianism and racism in football can be tackled. DAVID BUGLASS has travelled around Europe working in corporate business. But in January he returned to his roots and joined the board of directors at Berwick Rangers. Born in the town across the border in England, David has made it his mission to encourage locals to fall back in love with the club that plays in Scotland. David also tells us about former Tottenham boss André Villas-Boas' fascination with the game during his Pro-Licence coaching course in Largs. We'll speak to him about how he manages to double up his directors' role at Shielfield by heading up the football operations department at Glasgow City and the work he's done with their manager Scott Booth.. Plus we'll find out why he would back moves to appoint female coaches in the men's game. It's all on Down The Divisions. If you have any comments we'd love to hear from you. Krys and Good John are joined by John Hughes, aka Yogi, a man of many clubs as both player and manager. We start off by talking about Ann Budge's proposal for a 14-14-14. Is this prospect doomed with a number of clubs publicly objecting before discussions take place next week? Yogi then talks us through his playing career, which began at the humble surroundings of Newtongrange Star and Berwick Rangers. After a brief stint at Swansea, he made his name with Falkirk under Jim Jeffries in a five year spell that saw two promotions and a Challenge Cup success. His performances earned him a move to Celtic under Tommy Burns for just under 18 months before moving onto boyhood team Hibs then Ayr United. As he was winding his playing career back at Falkirk, Yogi then became Manager at the club, taking them into a five year stay in the top flight and a Scottish Cup Final in 2009. He then had just over a year at Hibs and then short stints at Livingston and Hartlepool before moving to Inverness in 2014. It was in the Highlands he enjoyed, arguably, his best success, winning the Scottish Cup and finishing third in 2014/15, thus winning Manager of the Year. This podcast is a joy from the start as Yogi reminisces over his career where he's played alongside some of the games best characters from Simon Stainrod to John Collins, from Mo Johnston to Russell Latapy. His passion for the game is there for all to see. We hope he's back in the game soon, maybe even in Perth.

The two John's are joined by a special guest this week, Cove Rangers striker Paul McManus. McManus talks about Cove's historic promotion from the Highland League to the SFPL set up, and his moment of joy in scoring the final goal of the 7-0 aggregate win over Berwick Rangers, consigning them to the Lowland League. He talks about the rise of the club, how they overcame disappointment of last seasons playoff heartache against Cowdenbeath to go one better, the standard of football in the Highland League, his partnership with Mitch Meginsson up front and his battles with injury this campaign. Naturally, he talks about the celebrations over the weekend and not needing to buy a drink in Aberdeen! A tactical substitution sees Paul depart and replaced by Krys to round off the rest of the weekends action. Clyde sealed promotion to League One following their playoff win over Annan Athletic. It wasn't to be three out of three promotions from the playoffs as Queen of the South comfortably saw off Raith Rovers to preserve their Championship status. The Premiership playoff will be contested between St Mirren and Dundee United, after Hamilton secured a sixth term in the top flight with victory over St Johnstone. Both Saints and United go into the two legged playoff in decent form, so it's a tough one to call. At the top end, Kilmarnock secured third place and guaranteed Europa League football with a late winner over Rangers. It proved to be the perfect goodbye for Steve Clarke, who left to become Alex McLeish's successor as Scotland manager, the lads agree it's the right appointment. Despite victory over Hibs, Aberdeen finished fourth and will now be hoping that Celtic defeat Hearts in the upcoming Scottish Cup Final in order to secure European Football for the sixth season running. Chat moves onto this weekends Scottish Cup Final between Celtic and Hearts. Will it be a triple treble for Celtic or can Hearts cause an upset? We're one John down this week but Krys is back. We start off with a special tribute to Lisbon Lions Billy McNeill and Stevie Chalmers, who lost their lives to dementia this week. The tribute features interviews with former Celtic player Billy Stark and Broadcaster Ally Begg, who was a presenter on Celtic TV. The topic moves nicely onto Premiership action and it was fitting that Celtic's No.5 scored the only goal of the game on 67 minutes to claim victory over Kilmarnock, which takes them to within a point of the title. Rangers clinched second with an easy win at home to Aberdeen, whilst the Edinburgh derby ended in a 1-1 draw. At the bottom, Dundee look doomed after a last minute loss to Motherwell, whilst both St Mirren and Hamilton snatched late draws to move them closer to safety, though one will end up in the Premiership playoffs. Ross County sealed Championship promotion in style, Falkirk need a minor miracle to avoid dropping out of the Division whilst Queen of the South, Alloa and Partick Thistle are still fighting to avoid the bottom two places. In League One, Montrose kept their ambitions of back-to-back promotions alive by securing a playoff place. It's a straight shootout between Brechin and Stenhousemuir to avoid automatic relegation, Barry Smith's side need a win or they will suffer consecutive relegations. Peterhead missed out on clinching League Two by conceding a 93rd minute goal to Stirling Albion, whilst Clyde kept up their slim chances of clinching the title with victory over Queens Park. Albion Rovers completed the great escape with an emphatic win over Berwick Rangers, who are consigned to the playoff to avoid dropping out of the SPFL set up. They are likely to face Cove Rangers, who won 2-1 in East Kilbride in the first leg of the League Two playoff. Tweet us @sffpodcastFacebook - Scottish Football ForumsInstagram - sffpodcast

Hamilton are feeling happy again after swapping Martin Canning for Brian Rice but Hibs are no closer to a successor for Neil Lennon. We check in at Berwick Rangers, the only English team in the SPFL, as they look to avoid the dreaded drop. Elsewhere Naismith shouts Hearts to victory while it’s a wasted trip for East Fife. We’re dreaming of a Dundee derby in the promotion/relegation play-off. And please join JJ’s Scotch pie appeal • PART 1: Canning canned as Hamilton order Rice. With Andy McGilvray from the Hamilton Advertiser (3m 00s) • PART 2: Celtic v Hibs preview (06m 45s) • PART 3: Rangers given four penalties + Aberdeen v Rangers preview with Dons blogger Ally Begg (14m 20s) • PART 4: Dundee v Kilmarnock preview (28m 30s) • PART 5: SPFL round-up with Neil White + our biggest wastes of time (34m 00s) • PART 6: The story of Berwick Rangers with Simon Pryde from BBC Newcastle (40m 45s) • PART 7: St Mirren v Motherwell, Hearts v Livingston & Hamilton v St Johnstone (46m 45s)
Elgin City welcome Berwick Rangers following another game where the Black & Whites have had to come from behind. It's becoming a bad habit! Also a look back at Cowdenbeath and the charms - YES charms - of Central Park
This week we discuss the news of Dave joining Hibs, another Lithuanian potentially on the way, whether Stokes will come and the potential move for Kris Commons. We look back at Berwick Rangers, montrose and Ross County, and look ahead to Arbroath and Alloa. And as always we finish with some questions from you guys. Please remeber to follow on Soundcloud and subscribe on iTunes.
In this weeks podcast, we go over Hibs News, look back at Dunfermline and Sunderland game, preview the Berwick Rangers and Montrose games, discuss winter vs summer football, look at the Hibs career of Lewis Stevenson and take questions from the fans. Enjoy and please remember to follow/subscribe.
It's me, Greig and Krys again this week, because John is in jail. Rangers EGM and our brief opinion on King. Sticking with Rangers, we touch on whether an old or new manager is likely anytime soon. Camshy suggested on the forum (http://forums.scottishfootballforums.co.uk/topic/20179-podcast-topics/) that we discuss top scorers. Celtic vs St Johnstone, Motherwell vs Killie and Ross county vs Partick Thistle are the Premiership games that we discuss. With Krys and Greig both going to the first two. The Premiership was quiet due to the Scottish Cup quarter finals. The live game on cooncil telly wasn't really up to much, apart from the headed goal from Sibbald. Hibs vs Berwick Rangers wasn't the contest it may have been and I even give Cummings some praise. Dundee United vs Celtic was the big talking point of the weekend, largely due to red cards and the lack of red cards. Derek Riordan's headed equaliser is applauded, and rightly so. The charity bet is McMenamin of Stenhousemuir for first scorer, and Ross County and St Johnstone for the McBookie charity double. The latter returns just under £100 for a tenner. Thank you to McBookie for donating the charity bet stake. SFFPodcast On Twitter http://forums.scottishfootballforums.co.uk/

The midweek edition of World Football Daily is here and lucky for us, there is some Champions League football to talk about, as well as a handful of other football matches, stories and topics to kick about as well. For example, did you hear about Rangers progressing on past Berwick Rangers in the Ramsdens Cup in Scotland? Ya, bet you missed that gem. Our guest for the day is Richard Whittle, Serie A commentator who was the voice you Americans heard on BeIN Sports when you watched the Roma match at the weekend. We welcome back the Serie A with Richard, looking at the new faces who look to make a big impact on the league. Will Rafa Benitez and Napoli find success after some massive makeovers over Summer? Is Fiorentina a legitimate content for the title? And has Juventus beefed up their squad depth looking to win the Champions League, only to stumble when it comes to retaining their league title? So many questions we need to ask Richard. Let's not forget about the Spanish Super Cup!
David and Scot discuss the 4-2 win over Berwick Rangers and bring you the Rangers 2012/13 Cliché Machine; things you are guaranteed to hear at every game this season. On top of that, there are trips to Belgium and Russia in the name of Sporting Integrity - one of which is literally taking things too far - and a great new competition. Oh, and the one-off return of Spiers of the Week! What more could you ask for? Produced by Paul Myers and Mike Leigh A Playback Media Production playbackmedia.co.uk
