The start of the college football season for Nebraska is a little over a week away, and the most significant decision of 2024 for Matt Ruhle has been made. Dylan Raiola has officially been named the starting quarterback for the season opener against UTEP. On this edition of the Doc Talk Podcast, Travis Justice and Dr. Rob Zatechka discuss the official announcement and how it wasn't that big of news; instead, it was a foregone conclusion. So, how will the true freshman be judged as a success? In the short term, get Nebraska back to a bowl game. In the long run, it's the playoffs or bust riding on the back of Raiola. Nebraska will not be wearing alternate uniforms this season. For some odd reason, uniforms are a hot topic of conversation among fans. What's the big deal? The Big Red "N" on the helmet is classic, and the Husker's traditional uniforms are some of the most recognizable in college football. We always hear that recruits and players like the style and flash of alternate uniforms. Do you know what they like better? Winning! Let's start there, and everything will take care of itself. Teams are getting creative when it comes to raising money for NIL. Oklahoma State is putting a QR code on its helmet. Former Nebraska assistant Bill Busch advocates placing a player's Venmo account on the scoreboard after a big play so fans can reward him. You will see a lot of trial, error, and success when it comes to NIL's creativity. Is this a good thing? Travis and Dr. Rob dive deep into the subject. A +451 improvement in six different categories from 2021 to 2022. Despite the numbers and being a Pender, Nebraska native, Matt Rhule did not retain Busch. Today he's hanging out doing morning radio on 93.7 The Ticket in Lincoln. Busch is also on the speaking circuit, talking to groups and companies about overcoming adversity. Today's episode of Generation Red: A Husker Podcast is oh so sweet! Over the next hour or so, Scott and I revel in three days of good news: First, there's the ginormous victory in Iowa City on Friday, where Nebraska upsets Iowa 24-17; and then the Athletic Department announces Matt Rhule as its new Head Coach on Saturday, and here we are, celebrating both on a Sunday. Nothing feels better than beating that stinky, stuck up, and sucky-corn-growing state to the east of us. Also, nothing is better than knowing they're not going to Indianapolis. And finally, nothing is better than finding out yesterday that a long coaching search is finally over; and in spite of the reticence among those in the fan base who wanted a big-time “splash” hire, the Huskers have their man in Matt Rhule. But we're not covering his hiring on this show today, even though we really want to. After he's had his introductory press conference on Monday, and has hopefully assembled a staff that includes Mickey Joseph and Bill Busch. we will join a few friends from other Husker podcasts next Sunday afternoon at 4:30 CST to discuss our new head coach.Instead tonight, we want to talk about the huge win over Iowa on Friday afternoon, and the pure joy that is taking the Heroes Trophy back to Lincoln, where it belongs; and it will be here to welcome the Hawkeyes into Memorial Stadium next November. We will give our overall impressions of the game, cover the stats, give out our final Game-Breaker and Game-Wrecker of the Week awards, and then rate the offense, defense and ST on a scale of 1-10.After that, we will have a special segment dedicated to the difference Bill Busch made on this team in just 8 games as the Huskers' DC. We'll compare and contrast the stats from 4 years and 4 games under Eric Chinander to what Coach Busch accomplished from Indiana thru Iowa. It should make for a compelling case to keep him on Coach Rhule's new staff for 2023. If not at DC, then at least let him coach safeties and Special Teams. In my opinion, it is nearly as important as retaining Mickey for the purposes of both recruiting, and staff continuity in all 3 phases of the game.We hope you enjoyed the show, and would love for you to contact us with questions, comments, or suggestions. -Mickey had 9 games to try and turn around the in-season mess at Nebraska that Scott Frost left after losses to Northwestern and Georgia Southern. He fired Erik Chinander after one week on the job, and Bill Busch was promoted to DC and has done a very fine job in that role-Mickey can't control the way the roster was constructed, and he can't help that his starting QB got hurt in the middle of a game they were winning (against a ranked Illinois team), and that he didn't have that QB against Minnesota or Michigan.-We knew the deck was stacked against him, but did Mickey get a fair shot at this thing?Show sponsored by GANA TRUCKINGAdvertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy
-We'll hear more from Bill Busch today on this, but it's fair for us to ask the question now before he addresses it. Sip pointed out that the Gophers had a 19 play, 99 yard drive to begin the game against Rutgers, which they won 31-0-Those types of drives demoralize you because you simply can't get off the field. Former Husker Todd Peterson joined the HypeCast to discuss Nebraska's upcoming game with Indiana and where things sit with the program. First the group tackled Nebraska's offense with thoughts on how the Huskers handle tempo, where things could stand to be a little bit or a lot better and who might pickup some of the work at running back with Ajay Allen out for the rest of the season. Then they transitioned to defense where the discussion focused on the type of coach Bill Busch has been in the past, what things might be different, where personnel could change and if any new players make debuts soon for the Huskers. Finally it is prediction time. How oddly specific can things get? As usual someone pushes the envelope and there's talk of total game time and plays run, in addition to players breaking out and some maniac even predicted a positive yardage kick return. Those predictions are followed by picks to click and score predictions? Did anyone take Nebraska? Did everyone? Find out for yourself. Programming note: Technical difficulties caused an abrupt ending to the episode. Mike Schaefer and Brian Christopherson gather to talk about if anyone still has chords for their headphones, the bye weekend and Nebraska's upcoming game against Indiana. Among the topics covered are how the Huskers could change things up and what might be expected for the defense with Bill Busch now in the defensive coordinator role. Additionally the two discuss which backups could see more run as the Huskers look for answers on that side of the ball. Then the conversation moves over to the coaching search and more specifically Dave Aranda the latest hot name in the Nebraska coaching search. Could Nebraska try to back up a brinks truck in Waco? It's a bye week in Lincoln, but that doesn't mean things are slow at the moment with the Nebraska Cornhuskers, who are practicing for a few days this week before the staff gets out to recruit and continue to add to the 2023 recruiting class and beyond. First the trio discusses Nebraska's defensive situation and how Mickey Joseph plans to handle things there. Bill Busch is now in charge of the defense, but given that the team is in season what changes are really possible? From there discussion moves on to the the offensive side of the ball as Ajay Allen and Teddy Prochazka are injured and done for the year. What does it mean for both of them and could the Huskers need to play defense with the running back to make sure he's still in Lincoln next fall? Finally it's time to talk coaches and there's plenty of discussion about Matt Campbell, Lance Leipold and Bill O'Brien, as the three are expected to be the top candidates the Huskers are expected to consider at this time. What are the concerns with each? Why could the work? All those answers and more on this edition of the Husker247 Podcast. -Busch told media that he told his specialists in the first meeting he had with them this year about “O.E.”, which means “doing the ordinary extraordinary.” -Busch refers to Tim Duncan in terms of him being the Big Fundamental—is there ever a thought that Nebraska hasn't paid attention enough to fundamentals over the years? -This goes back to the idea of Nebraska simply not beating themselves anymore. Proceed with caution; we say naughty words. Almost two weeks into Fall Camp and things are changing daily. Based on comments made this past week by Offensive Coordinator Mark Whipple, it would appear that Casey Thompson is the number one quarterback and takes most of the snaps. Of course, nothing will be official until the depth chart is released, and we know that Scott Frost wants to wait as long as possible for that to happen. In this edition of the Doc Talk Podcast presented by Betfred Sports, Dr. Rob Zatechka and Travis Justice play a little game of what we hear and think. We heard Whipple talk on Wednesday after practice and Bill Busch on Thursday. In general, both coaches were positive about the way things were going but were there some hidden messages in what they were saying? We think so, and we will give you our opinion about the quarterbacks, the offensive line, and the special teams. We have a guest this week. Bryan Bennett from Betfred Sports joins us to discuss our relationship with the sportsbook. You'll want t to listen to this as he drops a shocker on us when it comes to placing a future bet on Nebraska on the over/under for the number of wins. It might not be a safe bet anymore. Additionally, we drink beer from Ohio, Pennsylvania, and California and discuss some exciting new content pieces we have coming up during the season. Betfred Sports presents the Doc Talk Podcast.
