According to the Eight Point Plan for Housing Justice in Cuyahoga County, those with criminal records are ten times more likely to experience homelessness, and those who are homeless are more likely to be arrested--beginning a vicious cycle for those with a record. These individuals face collateral sanctions (both state laws and administrative rules) that can limit a person's ability to find employment, housing, and more. In fact, the same Eight Point Plan cited that 78% of affordable rentals in the County had long-term bans on those convicted of even minor offenses. With housing prices escalating, more than 20,000 people exiting incarceration in Cuyahoga County every year do not have access to a basic need that is vital for successful reintegration.rnrnYusuf Dahl has been on both sides of the struggle to strengthen America's most vulnerable neighborhoods. After his imprisonment, during the depths of the financial crisis, he became an unlikely real estate investor and affordable housing advocate. From a single two-family house in one of Milwaukee's poorest zip codes, Yusuf built a portfolio of over two hundred residential and commercial units and founded an award-winning property management company.rnrnYusuf is a former president of Wisconsin's largest apartment owners trade association and is leading the national effort to repeal the Thurmond Amendment - legislation that imposes a lifetime denial of fair housing protections to persons with a drug distribution conviction. Through her collaboration with True Colors and establishment of the Disrupt You onboarding program, KO illustrates how HR can serve as a catalyst for genuinely inclusive, purpose-driven, and prosperous workplaces. The conversation takes a deep dive into the nuances of fair chance hiring, revealing that it's about more than just filling positions—it's about tapping into the often-overlooked potential of those who've faced legal challenges. We explore how companies can perform self-assessments, spot allies within their ranks, and embrace interviewing practices that foster inclusivity. By sharing success stories from corporations like JP Morgan Chase and initiatives such as the Second Chance Business Coalition, we underscore how fair chance hiring not only leads to lower attrition rates but also bolsters a company's culture and morale, all while contributing to the larger social fabric.Navigating the intricacies of fair chance hiring isn't without its challenges, yet it offers a horizon of hope for many. In an emotional conversation, Dez reveals never-heard-before stories and the inner workings of his life and career. Opening up about the dysfunctional relationship between him and former head coach Jason Garrett, the lack of locker room bond between teammates, the feeling of being set up to fail and his complicated bond with the Jones family, Dez talks about how playing for Dallas was a blessing and a curse in one. Bryant says that he was never given a fair opportunity to learn or mature when he reached the NFL, and the media's portrayals of him stemmed from preconceived ideas of who he was.  In order to “X out the negativity,” Bryant became a three-time Pro Bowler and led the NFL in touchdown receptions in 2014. While he may be remembered most for his infamous no-catch against the Green Bay Packers in 2015, he shines a light on the troubles of that season and the pivot he made to survive. Talking about his childhood through his recent attempts to help the future of the game. Whether it was family, teammates, coaches, reporters or friends, Dez is candid about the relationships he cultivated over the years, remaining open and honest when it comes to misunderstood narratives.  Being raised in a different scenario of having a mother who was barely a teenager at his birth created a bumpy road for Dez early on, and with a complex bond to his father, Dez was often independent and trying to make it on his own. Football went from a simple game to his ticket to a new life, and with a mom or dad rarely in attendance, Dez had to self teach hard lessons while trying to find his way. With a life full of adversity, Dez remains himself to this day, and being away from the game as a player has allowed for him to focus on helping others and supporting his family in ways he couldn't be supported as a kid.  New episodes drop on Tuesdays at 12 p.m. ET and Fridays at 3:30 p.m ET on YouTube, with audio available on all streaming platforms including Apple, Spotify and Amazon. As we delve into this critical topic, we'll unravel the intricate web of challenges and disparities that surround it. Dr. Berry will guide us through the intricate dynamics of school funding, shining a light on the impact it has on the education, opportunities, and futures of our children. Key Takeaways:School funding is complex, and disparities exist between states and within communities, impacting the education of children.Where you live in the United States can significantly affect how much funding your local schools receive, leading to inequities.Marginalized communities and students of color often receive less funding, resulting in significant challenges and disadvantages. The pandemic exacerbated funding issues, with schools still in need of substantial financial support to recover.Advocacy at the federal, state, and local levels is essential to address school funding disparities and ensure a fair chance for every child.Adequate funding for education is not just about numbers; it's an investment in the future of our society, benefiting all through well-educated communities. Our commitment to providing quality education isn't just a matter of budgets and balance sheets; it's about investing in the future of our nation. School funding isn't just about numbers; it's about the dreams and aspirations of every child. Small nonprofits are on a survival treadmill

Small community based nonprofits are some of the most powerful change agents in America. They solve for inequities in education, childcare, mental health, and other needs in communities that have been marginalized by racism, discrimination, and poverty. These nonprofits are underestimated by national foundations and their accomplishments are underreported by the media. In this episode of Power Station, Gretchen Van der Veer explains how Fair Chance, the organization she leads, partners with small community based nonprofits in Washington DC, whose budgets are often less than $500,000, to strengthen their sustainability and impact. It has flipped the conventional model of capacity building, which imposes fixes to perceived deficiencies and instead partners with groups to create a plan for reinforcing their organizational systems, from fundraising to board development and financial management. These interventions, once assessed, validate the theory that a robust infrastructure produces greater benefits for the children, youth, and families these nonprofits serve. Local and regional foundations that fund small community based nonprofits are essential supporters of equity. Fair Chance is singular resource that invests its time, expertise and commitment to organizations that go all-in for their communities. Gretchen Van der Veer is an exceptional changemaker.
