Last episode, you heard the thrilling, incredible rock n' roll stories of the Hollywood Stars' Scott Phares and Jeff Jourard. This week, we conclude our epic conversation by revealing each of our Top 5 LA Albums! The Hollywood Stars were THE "It Band" on the Sunset Strip in the early '70s. Originally concocted by legendary Hollywood impresario and cult figure Kim Fowley to be LA's answer to New York Dolls, the Stars' mix of glammed-up hard rock and pop hooks made them mainstays at clubs like the Whisky a Go Go and the Starwood. Bands like Journey, the Runaways, and Quiet Riot opened for them. Iggy Pop joined them on stage. John Lennon attended their performances. Their songs were covered by Alice Cooper ('Escape') and KISS ('King of the Night Time World'). Every major label wanted to sign them, eventually recording a debut album in 1974 for Columbia with Eagles producer Bill Szymczyk. But fate had other plans for the Hollywood Stars...a shake up at Columbia's west coast division led to the band being dropped before the album was released (and would remain that way until 2013, when Shine Like A Radio: The Great Lost 1974 Album surfaced), and the original incarnation of the band broke up. The remnants of the band would finally release an eponymous debut album for Arista in 1977, but that was effectively the end of the Hollywood Stars' story...until now. Following the success of their archival release, the band would get back together in 2018 for live shows and new recordings, with original lead vocalist Scott Phares returning to the fold. Their brand new 2024 album, Starstruck, finds the band in fine, rockin' form. The current version of the band also includes a veteran guitarist with more incredible rock n' roll stories to tell, Jeff Jourard. Jeff played with Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers during the recording of their first album - the motorcycle jacket you see Petty wearing on the cover was Jeff's - but his departure from the band as they left for England meant that his sole credit on the record was a "Heartfelt Thanks." After that, Jeff teamed up with Martha Davis to form the Motels, co-writing their oft-covered classic 'Total Control.' Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

"Made Loud To Be Played Loud!" Bill talked about recording with his son Michael, how to create cinematographic drums, single mic vocal stacking with The Eagles, producing demos on a boat, how to record great rock guitars, and singing at 8000 feet. Get access to FREE mixing mini-course: https://MixMasterBundle.com My guest today is Bill Szymczyk (and his son Mike Szymczyk) a Grammy-winning and multi-nominated American music producer and engineer best known for producing Hotel California by The Eagles. He produced many top albums and singles of the 1970s, though–aside from continuing to work with Joe Walsh–he retired from the music business by 1990  re-emerging in the late 2000s for select projects including the 2007 Eagles album Long Road Out of Eden and the 2008 eponymous debut of Brian Vander Ark. Unlike many music producers, Szymczyk has no background as a musician. He was originally a sonar operator for the U.S. Navy and took some audio production classes as part of his Navy training. Besides his work with the Eagles, he has produced hit songs and albums for such diverse artists as B.B. King, Joe Walsh, The James Gang, and Elvin Bishop. What the Riff?!?

Play Episode Listen Later Nov 14, 2022 38:43

Face Dances is the ninth studio album from the Who, and the first release after the death of drummer Keith Moon three years earlier.  During those three years the Who would release the film Quadrophenia and the concert retrospective film The Kids Are Alright.  Front man Roger Daltry would try out acting, and Pete Townshend would release his second solo studio album.  When the group got back together for Face Dances, Phil Collins expressed an interest in joining the band.  However, Kenny Jones (Small Faces, Faces) had already been asked to join.  John “Rabbit” Bundrick also contributed keyboard work on this album, and would eventually join as a full time member of the Who.  These joined previous members Daltry, Townshend, and bassist John Entwistle.  The album was highly anticipated, and was a commercial success, reaching number 4 on the U.S. Billboard 200 and number 2 on the UK Albums chart.  Critical reviews were mixed at the time, and the band has expressed some friction with producer Bill Szymczyk who conducted the final mixing without the full band's input.  Regardless, the album is a staple of early 80's rock and many of the songs have achieved a timelessness about them.Brian brings us this album for today's podcast. You Better You BetThe first single and lead-off track to the album was a staple of the new cable station - MTV.  It was the Who's last top 20 single, reaching number 18 on the Billboard Hot 100.  Townshend developed the song during a period of clubbing with the daughter of a friend.  The video was a black and white studio session.  Don't Let Go the CoatThis deeper cut was the second single, and was inspired by Townshend's guru Meher Baba and his statement that his followers “hang fast to the hem of my robe,” meaning to stay true to his teachings.  It also may have been inspired by Townshend's parents who would pick him up after his binges on drugs and alcohol. The Quiet OneBassist John Entwistle takes an unusual turn as lead singer on this self-referential deep cut.  It was the B-side of the single “You Better You Bet.”  Entwisle said it was a song trying to explain that he wasn't really quiet, but that he started being quiet and got stuck in the pigeon hole of that label.Another Tricky Day“This is no social crisis, just another tricky day for you...fella!”   John Bundrick inspired this song, and it claims that what we're going through is nothing unique, but is just another tricky day.  The song is the final track on the album, and the video is in the same style as the first single - a black and white studio session. ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Main theme from the television series “Dynasty” John Forsythe, Linda Evans, and Joan Collins starred in this prime time soap opera. STAFF PICKS:Skateaway by Dire Straits Bruce brings us a song about a girl who skates around the city, ticking off the drivers, weaving in and out of traffic, and listening to the local rock and roll station on her headphones.  This is the lead single from the Dire Straits album Making Movies,  and the album title is pulled from the lyrics of this song.Precious to Me  by Phil SeymourDrummer, singer-songwriter, and guitarist Phil Seymour wrote this song with a throwback doo-wop feel.  This is the first single from his first solo album.  It hit number 22 on the Billboard Hot 100.  Seymour also contributed backing vocals to Tom Petty's “American Girl” and “Breakdown.”He Can't Love You by the Michael Staley Band Wayne features a one hit wonder featuring saxophonist and E. Street Band member Clarence Clemons.  It made it to number 33 on the Billboard Hot 100, and was the 40th song played on MTV.  The Michael Stanley Band is big regionally in Ohio.I Love a Rainy Night by Eddie RabbitBrian's staff pick is a crossover country hit.  It hit the top of both the Billboard Hot 100 and Hot Country charts.  It describes the feeling that comes from a good rain at night.  Rabbit started writing the song in the 60's, but didn't develop it until this album.   INSTRUMENTAL TRACK:Toccata by SkyThis prog rock group covers the classical piece "Toccata and Fugue in D minor" by J.S. Bach made it on the British singles charts.

Hotel California er ein mest selda plata rokksögunnar, hefur selst í meira en 32 milljónum eintaka en er þrátt fyrir það ekki mest selda plata Eagles. Það er safnplatan Their Greatest Hits (1971-1975). Hotel California lenti í 37. sæti á lista Rolling Stone yfir bestu plötur sögunnar bæði 2003 og 2012.

After building a devoted fanbase in their native Michigan in the early 90s, the Verve Pipe struck gold in 1996 when a song they'd been playing for years called "The Freshman" totally changed the game, catapulting their third album (first on a major label) Villains into platinum territory. The world was their oyster. Unfortunately, the follow-up tanked on an epic level and they never quite regained their footing. Since then their songcraft has only improved over the years, including 2017's excellent Parachute. Along the way, frontman Brian Vander Ark did his very best to stay afloat with solo albums and revolutionizing the house concert. In this chat we discuss all of it including working with producers like Jerry Harrison, Adam Schlesinger, and Bill Szymczyk, what he purchased when he finally hit it big and the impact of constantly being confused for UK band The Verve. Brian's about as down to earth as it gets and the Verve Pipe are currently on tour so catch them while you can!    http://www.thevervepipe.com/

Over the past few decades, crate diggers have stumbled upon Tumbleweed's records in dollar bins around the country, unaware of the short-lived, glittering empire behind them. This 'cast continues to explore the influences of Widespread Panic's music.Michael Stanley's second solo album, Friends and Legends, is featured prominently this time around. The band Stanley was playing with on this album was a who's who of mid-seventies rock; Dan Fogelberg, Richie Furay, David Sanborn, Bill Szymczyk, and Joe Walsh (AND his band Barnstorm). J. Geils even got in on the act by producing the saxophone tracks. It also was produced in my current stomping grounds of Colorado... Let's Get the Show on the Road is one of my favorite Panic covers and Funky is the Drummer is a crazy jam/rap that JB has slipped into a couple of times.I really had alot of fun putting this one together - turn it up and invite the friends over... and tear the roof of the sucker!Let's Get the Show on the RoadMichael Stanleyfrom the album "Friends and Legends"She Caught the KatyAlbert Kingfrom the album "Lovejoy"Funky is the DrummerMichael Stanleyfrom the album "Friends and Legends"Give up the Funk (Tear the Roof of the Sucker)Parliamentfrom the album "Mothership Connection"Wang Dang DoodleKoko Taylorfrom the album "The Earthshaker"Can't Find My Way HomeBlind Faithfrom the album "Blind Faith"Keep Your Lamps Trimmed and BurningHot Tunafrom the album "First Pull Up, The Pull Down"Knocking 'round the ZooJames Taylor and the Original Flying Machinefrom the album "James Taylor and the Original Flying Machine"Shouldn't Have Took More than You GaveDave Masonfrom the album "Alone Together"TipitinaProfessor Longhairfrom the album "New Orleans Piano"John's OtherHot Tunafrom the album "First Pull Up, The Pull Down"Just Like a WomanBob Dylanfrom the album "Blonde on Blonde"SpoonfulWillie Dixonfrom the album "I am the Blues"GladTrafficfrom the album " John Barleycorn Must Die"Let's Get it OnMarvin Gayefrom the album "Let's Get it On"DOWNLOAD the cast here(right click to save to hard drive):Everyday Companion Podcast #69Click here to subscribe through iTunes.
