Deep listening can change the world. Listening impacts so many things: Our understanding, our questions, and our connections to those around us. When we listen deeply, we light a spark for transformation. But listening isn't easy. There are habits and culturally accepted practices that hold us back from really listening to understand. The good news is that you can create simple shifts to improve the quality of your listening and inspire others to do the same. This Design Yourself episode highlights 12 habits that prevent us from listening – including rehearsing, daydreaming, and placating. We invite you to see with a fresh perspective where your listening gets derailed and to make simple shifts to bring your attention back to listening to understand. Last episode, you heard the thrilling, incredible rock n' roll stories of the Hollywood Stars' Scott Phares and Jeff Jourard. This week, we conclude our epic conversation by revealing each of our Top 5 LA Albums! The Hollywood Stars were THE "It Band" on the Sunset Strip in the early '70s. Originally concocted by legendary Hollywood impresario and cult figure Kim Fowley to be LA's answer to New York Dolls, the Stars' mix of glammed-up hard rock and pop hooks made them mainstays at clubs like the Whisky a Go Go and the Starwood. Bands like Journey, the Runaways, and Quiet Riot opened for them. Iggy Pop joined them on stage. John Lennon attended their performances. Their songs were covered by Alice Cooper ('Escape') and KISS ('King of the Night Time World'). Every major label wanted to sign them, eventually recording a debut album in 1974 for Columbia with Eagles producer Bill Szymczyk. But fate had other plans for the Hollywood Stars...a shake up at Columbia's west coast division led to the band being dropped before the album was released (and would remain that way until 2013, when Shine Like A Radio: The Great Lost 1974 Album surfaced), and the original incarnation of the band broke up. The remnants of the band would finally release an eponymous debut album for Arista in 1977, but that was effectively the end of the Hollywood Stars' story...until now. Following the success of their archival release, the band would get back together in 2018 for live shows and new recordings, with original lead vocalist Scott Phares returning to the fold. Their brand new 2024 album, Starstruck, finds the band in fine, rockin' form. The current version of the band also includes a veteran guitarist with more incredible rock n' roll stories to tell, Jeff Jourard. Jeff played with Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers during the recording of their first album - the motorcycle jacket you see Petty wearing on the cover was Jeff's - but his departure from the band as they left for England meant that his sole credit on the record was a "Heartfelt Thanks." After that, Jeff teamed up with Martha Davis to form the Motels, co-writing their oft-covered classic 'Total Control.' Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Baxie talks to Jeff Jourard from the Hollywood Stars! Jeff talks about joining the band and about their incredible history. Created as the West Coast's answer to the New York Dolls, the Hollywood Stars were a band who recorded two largely abandoned albums in the 1970's. However, two of their songs were taken and recorded a couple of multi-platinum selling albums. ("Escape" which appeared on Alice Cooper's Welcome to My Nightmare and "King of the Nighttime World" which appeared on Destroyer by Kiss). Jeff's own career includes early stints with Martha Davis and The Motels as well as an early version of Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers! Prepare yourself for an incredible story! Noel catches up with Tim McGovern, who was the lead singer of Burning Sensations. They're best known for their song, "Belly of the Whale." The video was one of the most popular on MTV back in 1983. Unfortunately, their record label only pressed 15,000 copies of their album, which quickly sold out. On top of that, they received very little radio play thanks to record label politics. Tim formed the band following his departure from The Motels and Martha Davis, who he had a relationship with.

In this episode we welcome acclaimed critic, author and professor Evelyn McDonnell and invite her to discuss her new Joan Didion book, along with the Motels, Britney Spears and California's pop history in general. Evelyn talks about her early L.A. memories and childhood move to Wisconsin before we hear how she progressed from her college paper in Providence, RI, to becoming the pop critic for the Miami Herald. We also note books such as her Runaways biography Queens of Noise, a suitable jumping-off point for a long conversation about her fellow Californian, Didion. Mark and Martin reminisce about the impact of Didion's extraordinary essay collections Slouching towards Bethlehem and The White Album, after which we follow her career through to the bestselling Year of Magical Thinking. The L.A. theme continues as we hear two clips from Steve Roeser's 2001 audio interview with Motels singer Martha Davis, putting that band into historical context with discussion of the pre-punk D.I.Y. "Radio Free Hollywood" shows in 1976. From there we fast-forward to the very different "L.A. Woman" that was and is Britney Spears, which in turn prompts our guest to give her very pertinent take on the [Jann] "Wennergate" debacle of the past month. At a significant remove from all this Hollywood Babylonia was avant-jazz giant Carla Bley, whose death we mark in a conversation about 1971's extraordinary Escalator Over The Hill. Finally, Mark mentions pieces he's recently added to the RBP library, including interviews with Laurie Anderson and the Byrds' Roger McGuinn, and Jasper rounds the episode off with remarks on pieces about Herbie Hancock and Steve Goodman's Hyperdub label. Many thanks to special guest Evelyn McDonnell. The World According to Joan Didion is published by HarperOne and available now. Pieces discussed: Hollywood Swinging: Joan Didion in '60s L.A., The Runaways, The Motels' Martha Davis audio, Britney Spears at Staples Centre, Britney Spears interviewed by Steven Daly, Carla Bley interviewed by Brian Case, Carla Bley at Queen Elizabeth Hall, Dwight Twilley Band, Dwight Twilley: Magical Mystery Man, Queen Latifah/DJ Mark the 45 King, The Byrds, Laurie Anderson, Steve Goodman & Hyperdub and Herbie Hancock.

Importance of Relationships Talking about importance of relationships to combat burn out, process improvement, ways to manage career, and life. Removing listening blocks to improve relationships. How being future focused can make you lose sight of the present. Having an emotional and physical plan for the day. Using process improvement to make life more efficient. Entering flow state with rap music. Building the habit of showing up. Learning to embrace being uncomfortable and producing anyway. 12 Listening Blocks That Hinder Relationships Summarized from "Messages: The Communication Skill Book" by Matthew McKay, Martha Davis, Patrick Fanning. Comparing Difficult to listen when you are seeing if you measure up. Minding Reading Believing you know what the person is actually saying with only your intuition, or vague misgivings to guide you. Rehearsing No time to listen when you are rehearsing what to say. Filtering Listening only to confirm if someone is angry, unhappy, or if you are in danger. Can also be used to avoid hearing threatening, negative, or critical comments. Judging Forming your opinion before hearing and evaluating the content. Causes listening to cease, and jumping to conclusions. Dreaming Half listening until something triggers a memory, then you are back in your private world. If this is a pattern with a certain party, could be you do not value what they have to say. Identifying Things heard are related back to your own experiences and now you are occupied crafting your story to tell. Advising Offering advise after a cursory listen, leaves the party feeling more alone and unheard. Sparring Focus is on things to disagree with. The put-down Dismissing what the party is saying with a sharp cutting comments. Discounting Bringing yourself down after hearing a compliment. Leaves party feeling unheard when expressing their appreciation. Being Right Focus on avoiding criticism, and resistant to change. Derailing Quick subject changes. Responding with jokes to avoid any serious listening. Placating Agreeing with everything, instead of listening. Comes from wanting the party to accept you. PANDALAND: MAKING IT COUNT was the winner of BEST FILM at the June 2022 Toronto DOCUMENTARY Film Festival. https://www.instagram.com/davisphotog727 “PANDALAND: Making IT Count” is about how children become engaged and learn to grapple with big social issues. The filmmaker accomplishes this by encouraging playful exploration in a multi-media installation of 70+ toy pandas she created in her neighbourhood. The vibe of the film is lighthearted and optimistic. As the children initiate an election on behalf of the pandas, their experience embodies community building, demonstrates acts of civic engagement and conveys the important message that, by working together, even young children can effect change. The film is a life-affirming tribute to kids' compassion and the birth of their activism!” Go to the WILDsound TV app. You can sign up for the 7 day free trial at www.wildsound.ca (available on your streaming services and APPS).
