Ep 106 Description: “We shouldn't underestimate our emotions and what that can do to us as we are carrying the child and giving birth.” —Ma Ananda Sarita Tantra offers powerful tools to prepare the mind, body, and spirit for birth. As birth approaches, Tantra encourages transcending cultural conditioning of pain to rediscover birth as a natural, ecstatic process. As a master healer, she guides students on the spiritual path of self-realization through Tantra, meditation, and healing past psychological issues. Mmatshilo shares her journey, from feeling burdened by her family's legacy of healers to embracing it as a privilege. She reflects on the impact of hospital births on maternal and infant trauma and advocates for home births as a less violent alternative. She discusses the politicization of childbirth, particularly in developing countries, and the importance of education and advocacy for women's rights in birthing choices. Mmatshilo also emphasizes the significance of respecting women's choices in pain management during childbirth and cultural rituals surrounding pregnancy and naming ceremonies. Historically speaking, women and babies did not do well out of child birth. Without the advances in medicine today, many women died of complications. Around a quarter of infants died before their first birthdays. But have we moved too far away from ancient wisdom? Were there practices that helped women give birth and deliver healthy babies?Professor of Midwifery at the University of Western Sydney Hannah Dahlen talks about what she's learnt about midwifery practices that can help women in labour and the lost wisdom of ages past.
In this episode, we take a step back in time and a short but deep dive into history from a female perspective. We explore how ideas about women and their bodies have led to the birthing practices we see today. We visit the world of Goddesses, vulva art, and how women were once revered for their ability to create life. Then we move on through the times into a world where women were seen as dirty malfunctioning versions of men, whose primary role was to reproduce. We also talk about how science and the mechanisation of the world resulted in our bodies being viewed as machines. On this whistlestop tour of history... or should I say herstory, you will hear about the gossips (you definitely want to listen to this), the closing off of keyholes during birth, and of course some fun along the way. You also get a sneak peek into the vulva art that one of us loves to make!Show LINKS:Jane Hardwick Collins: https://janehardwickecollings.com/Marilyn French : https://www.goodreads.com/author/show/14160.Marilyn_FrenchAdrian Wilson: https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/18183261-ritual-and-conflictLayne Redmond: https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/910443.When_the_Drummers_Were_WomenMusic by: Joesph McDadeProduction: Katie JamesEditing: Katie James and Jannis Piekarek

What is normal birth? After have just completed educational certifying seminars, taught by Elena, for both Lamaze International and DONA International, we are even more pumped about 'normal' birth and specifically the 6 healthy birth practices set by Lamaze! Elena Carrillo is an inspiring and passionate Birth professional - a Doula & Childbirth Educator & Trainer, also serving as a Board member at both DONA and Lamaze International. Elena has 40+ years of experience in the birth field and shares with us her story, what inspires her, her aspirations and also takes us through Lamaze's very important healthy practices, that should be the standard for all normal births. It was with great pride and joy, that together with Elena, we successfully hosted and completed the very 1st Lamaze certification training seminar in the UAE, along with a DONA Doula certification workshop, where now women have even more options and support available to them, in the hopes that together, we are able to welcome happier mamas, happier babies and happier families. Enjoy!
