Rebroadcast of episode 126Birth has a way of transforming us. Bringing forth new life requires us to dig deep, to find a part of ourselves that is bigger than ourselves, that you may not even know you have, that asks you to surrender and turn inward and trust. This episode is loosely based on a Pathways to Family Wellness Article - titled The Treasure Box. Where a midwife discusses with a client how transformative birth can be.Dr. Shannon and Doula Rachael share their own birth stories and how they tapped into their mental reserves during birth, and they share advice from clients and patients. Some call it the treasure box, this beautiful gift we're given that shows us how strong and capable we truly are. Others call it the pain cave, this mental place we go to when things are hard, when we want to stop, when we want to give up. Whatever you call it, you do have it, and during pregnancy it can be helpful to reflect on your thoughts, fears, emotions, and feelings surrounding birth. During labor, a beautiful dance occurs between oxytocin, endorphins, adrenaline, and cortisol. The body's innate wisdom craves calmness, peace, safety, and security, which helps labor progress more smoothly and allows hormones to work efficiently. However, the sights, sounds, and smells of hospitals can sometimes disrupt this flow, making it harder to enter the optimal "labor land" mindset where you feel safe, comfortable, and private. Whether planning a home or hospital birth, there are many ways to create a peaceful and secure birthing environment that encourages the natural flow of labor. In this episode, Dr. Shannon and Doula Rachael share several strategies to support the hormones of labor. Rebroadcast of Episode 146: Birth not only impacts mom, but baby as well. In this episode, Doula Rachael and Dr. Shannon chat about specific questions she asks during her pediatric chiropractic exams and why those questions are important. These questions are related to baby position in the womb as well as the entire birth process because the physical aspects of birth (mode of delivery, fast labor, slow labor, baby position) can relate to how baby is processing living outside of the womb (torticollis, constipation, colic, nursing issues) Birth doesn't have to be a traumatic event for mom and baby to deal with certain stressors and then for the nervous system to be impacted from those stressors. But pediatric chiropractic care is a gentle way to help restore optimal nervous system function post-birth for mom and baby.Your baby doesn't have to have any “issues” either to benefit from having their nervous system assessed by a pediatric chiropractor!Resources mentioned:Episode 95: how birth process impacts infant feeding Episode 69: benefits of pediatric chiropractic careEpisode 57: pediatric chiropractic care and cranial adjustments with Dr. Martin RosenCuriosity and Beyond Exploring the Magical World of KnowledgeListen on: Apple Podcasts SpotifySupport the Show.Want to show your support? They discuss ways to protect your mental space during pregnancy, such as addressing fears, building a supportive community, and surrounding yourself with providers who respect your preferences. They also delve into the process of processing your birth story, including seeking therapy, joining support groups, and using narrative therapy to highlight both the bright moments and the challenges. Processing the birth experience is important for healing and growth. It involves acknowledging the emotions and grief associated with a birth that didn't go according to plan. Writing, therapy, support groups, and movement can all be helpful tools in the healing process. It's important to remember that the outcome of the birth does not define a person's worth as a parent. In this episode, Dr. Shannon and Doula Rachael discuss the different types of doulas and the support they provide. The word doula can be traced back to Ancient Greece meaning “female servant”. Most commonly, people are familiar with a doula surrounding childbirth, but a doula can also provide support for end of life care for the client and family. Dr. Shannon and Doula Rachael shed some light on several other types of doulas and the support they provide. They cover birth doulas, postpartum doulas, antepartum doulas, end-of-life doulas, and miscarriage doulas. Each type of doula offers unique support and guidance during different stages of life. This conversation explores various types of doulas who provide support during different life events and the importance of emotional, informational, and physical support during these challenging times. They also discuss the need for trained and certified doulas who can provide individualized care and resources. The conversation aims to raise awareness about the availability of support services and the importance of destigmatizing these topics.*This episode mentions sensitive topics such as miscarriage, stillbirth, infant death, abortion, infertility, and end of life care. Birth not only impacts mom, but baby as well. Martin RosenSupport the showWant to show your support? Amanda Gorman joins the show today, and through her own two birth and postpartum experiences, she made a career change to share her perinatal knowledge with other moms and families. She is a Birthing From Within childbirth education instructor, a doula, and is the Program and Policy Manager with Postpartum Support International Georgia Chapter. We go in-depth with how her births led her to become a childbirth educator, how her own postpartum struggle with mood disorders led her to create a podcast to spread awareness and knowledge, and how all of that ultimately led to her doula work and her work with PSI Georgia. There's lots of ways to start off the new year - setting goals or resolutions, being intentional about tasks, starting new habits, etc. In this episode, we chat about an exercise that Dr. Shannon has been doing for several years now - picking a word of the year. It can be a word, a mantra, a phrase, but something that you can meditate on, pray about, and reflect on throughout the year. And as you pick this word, it can help you focus, stay grounded, and remember your vision, dreams, and aspirations for the year. Sounds kind of like a birth affirmation too, right? Check out Dr. Shannon's blog about her journey with picking a word of the year. And doula Rachael jumps in on the fun of picking a word, so be sure to listen to the whole episode.
