Send us a textIn this heartfelt and revealing episode, Melinda Russell sits down with Dell Hamilton, a serial entrepreneur, former NASCAR team owner, and longtime supporter of women in racing. Dell shares how he used NASCAR not just for the thrill of the sport, but as a powerful tool to build lasting business relationships, honor the military, and support ethical and talented female drivers. From humble beginnings watching race traffic from his church parking lot in Charlotte, NC, Dell walks us through his journey into NASCAR—from a curious pit pass guest to sponsoring cars and eventually co-owning teams. With honesty and humor, Dell reflects on working with drivers like Blake Koch, Michael McDowell, and Jennifer Jo Cobb, and the hard realities many racers face when trying to climb the NASCAR ladder without deep pockets or big-name backing. He talks candidly about the importance of integrity, personality, and relationship-building in motorsports and explains how young women, if given a real chance, can generate massive sponsor value. His passion for mentorship, military outreach, and storytelling shines through as he encourages business owners to take a leap of faith and support emerging female talent in the sport.Dell also shares lessons learned from years of navigating NASCAR's business model, the media challenges surrounding branding and video rights, and his latest venture—Cruising Still the One, a YouTube boating channel blending fun, education, and adventure. This episode is a must-listen for anyone passionate about the business side of racing, female representation in motorsports, and how one man used racing not just to win, but to inspire and connect.Support the show

Dale Earnhardt Jr. enjoys a conversation with his business partner in FilterTime and former NASCAR competitor Blake Koch where he learns more about Blake's journey rising the ranks as a driver to his never-quit mentality starting a business.  In modern motorsports, becoming a successful racecar driver takes drive, dedication, and perseverance. These qualities are also present in successful business owners, which is something Dale Jr. took note of when Blake first approached him about getting involved with FilterTime. Dale recognized Blake's hustle when he was assisting Matt Kaulig with starting Kaulig Racing, for which he raced with during the 2016/17 NASCAR Xfinity seasons. And while Blake was let go for Ryan Truex before the 2018 season, his character as a hard worker who was not afraid to take on challenges was demonstrated.  Blake found his way to the big leagues of NASCAR with limited stock car experience. He explains that after racing motocross most of his life, he realized he wasn't going to be able to become a professional and was ready to hang up the helmet. His stepfather called him about trying out a FASCAR Pro Truck in 2007, which got him into the world of short track racing. When sponsorship became difficult to secure for late model rides, Blake shifted his focus to the ARCA West Series (which was then the NASCAR Camping World West) thanks to a break from Richard Childress Racing and the Golden Gate Racing Team outfit. With a full season under his belt, Blake traveled out east and began competing in NASCAR Xfinity events for various teams before linking up with Matt Kaulig at TriStar Motorsports. When Matt expressed he was determined to begin winning, Blake set out to find out how much money it would take to become a winning team. Once the answers became clear, Matt decided to start Kaulig Racing on his own with Blake in the driver's seat. His 7th place points effort in 2016 would be his finest achievement in racing, but when the window closed suddenly he realized he needed something more stable for his growing family. After brainstorming business ideas, he came up with the concept of a subscription-based home air filter service, and soon FilterTime was born.

In this episode Blake talks about:how he believed in God as a Kid, but wasn’t discipled and didn’t attend church regularlyWhen Blake was 16 his dad had a great testimony and he started sharing it with Blake and that was huge for him. “Who knows where I’d be now if it wasn’t for my dad.”Dad was a big Hollywood producer. He had everything you could want. Big houses, cars, money. But he was just lost and wasn’t happy. Then he changed. God got a hold of his heart and removed everything from his life. He went broke, lost his house, lost his cars, and surrendered and went on to a life of following Jesus. God needed to strip everything away from him to get his attention.Parents were divorced when he was 2. Lived mainly with mom. She was a single mother working 9-5 and barely getting by. On weekends when he’d be at dad’s he would get anything he wanted, but at mom’s, she was happy to provide food.Even though his dad lost everything he knew God would provide and that has really worn off on Blake. From 20 years old on, any decision Blake had to make, he would call his dad and they would pray. Every race they would pray, before every practice, they would pray. Now as an entrepreneur, they pray prior to every meeting.COME TO JESUS AHA MOMENT - Going to college, starting to party a bit, starting to drink too much here and there, and was kind of distant from God. He admits he was trying to control his life. He was living with his girlfriend at the time. He woke up on a Sunday and was feeling a little rough and his girlfriend said they should go to church. He was working and making good money and was at church and the pastor talked about trying to live life on your own and how that's not something you want to do. When it came time to give he reached in his wallet and grabbed all the cash he had and put it in the offering. Still to this day doesn’t know how much he gave but knows he was working money and wanted to surrender it to God. From that moment on he bought his own Bible, got into a small group, went to church regularly, and now is on fire from the Lord.He attended a Drivers Bible study on race day when he came into NASCAR, and was able to get plugged into a good group of guys who were on the same mission and loved the Lord.Grew up racing dirt bikes. Racing cars at 20. Drove a race car for the first time for fun and then decided he wanted to be a NASCAR driver cause it was fun. Growing up, NASCAR driver was not a dream growing up. had never watched NASCAR till 2007, drove the car in 2008.Got engaged at 24, moved to NC to pursue racing in 1 bedroom apt from Florida. Was hired to drive in the Xfinity series in 2011. Did that whole year and things were looking good. 2012 signed with a new team and had a big sponsor and after 1st race sponsor pulled out. Got a job driving his friend Trevor Barnes motor home to NASCAR races. They were buddies, and he stayed with him, they were in the same bible study. Blake started spotting during the race. One of his other buddies Josh wise couldn’t make it to a race and suggested they have Blake ride. He did it, did well, and then gets more opportunities and he hired again2016 he had a big sponsor come on board, started a racing team, started driving and made playoffs, and finished 6th in the championship.Talks about the emotional toll of being on a team, then let go, then on a team, then let go.He shares experiences speaking at Promise Keepers.Talks about walking with his team owner through putting his faith in the LordShares about starting Filter Time and how he partnered with Dale Earnhardt Jr.https://www.filtertime.com/Talks about his car catching on fire in a race at TalladegaTalks about his Dad’s book the firsthour.com

Podcast Guest: Blake Koch & Host: Jai Shukla Q1 – You started at the age of 22 - why so late? At the age of 21 - The stepdad Blake Koch asked if he wanted to drive it. He grew up racing dirt bikes which weren’t fun. One test in Orlando and he fell in love with it. He was fast. 2 years later was signed with Nascar 2 years after that made debut at Xfinity. 6 cup races, and 200 Xfinity racers later - Blake Koch started his own company - FilterTime. Q2 – Talk us through the reality of it? Lot’s of ups and downs. It was a hobby initially during the last year of college.   Q3 – How did you transition from hobby to I want to do this seriously? ‘That’s just how I am. I want to be the best. Started watching it on TV, racing and winning. Racing and winning - I can do it. Taking it into his own hands. Firstly - started by calling all the Nascar teams. Everything single one of them - telling them that he was their next driver and they needed to see me and meet me but only a few gave a callback. Mike Dillon gave him the opportunity. Hey, we have an affiliate team and you should talk to them. After speaking to them, he flew out and said if you come up with half the sponsorship you can race with us. Back in 2008. In 2007, that was the first race he watched and by 2008 he was about to race. It was 25,000$ he had to come up with. He’s from palm beach Florida, made some phone calls and dad made some phone calls. Spoke to some successful entrepreneurs. So he was like wow, this is reality and I’m not even ready. At 22,23 he understood it’s business. Understood why people are looking for it. To make his debut he went and came 4th and then signed him on. Then didn’t win rookie of the year, had a lot of crashes. Q4 – What did you do for training? I didn’t. Q5 - So when did you start training properly? It’s a broad definition of properly. But I am now a trainer for 2 NASCAR drivers. Using the knowledge he has now to help those who are in his position. 2016, he started training properly. Hired a PT, had a nutrition plan, got a simulator, made the playoff, came 6th - won a pole, made a playoff and then that was the last time driving after losing a sponsor.   Q6 - How do you deal with the lows and losing sponsors? Some of the lows - after the first Xfinity start - he had a contract, commitments, a totally different career path - but in 2011 the deal fell apart. Sitting on the couch there is heartbreaking. Telling your friends. Q7 - How did it follow apart? New marketing director - changed who they wanted to sponsor. It’s such a humbling experience. It all gets taken away within a moment. Do you feel sorry for yourself? Give up? Not in his blood - started working on sponsors - and found a new sponsor and that’s how he got his full-time ride in Xfinity series in 2011. In 2012 moved teams again, lost the sponsor again in 2012, just bought a house - wife’s pregnant. Working different part-time jobs to pay the bills. In 2013, back on the track behind the car and qualified 2nd. That was a career moment. Q8 – Why at this point - why did you feel training yourself wasn’t the key if you were coming in around 25th and then losing and getting new sponsors? Because no matter how much you train, what coach you have if you have a slow race car - you’re not going to be able to show your skillset. So he put his effort into the business part. When the opportunity presented itself - he worked out for a 1 month, preparing, an allergy specialist. Didn’t have the money to hire people for training. Q9 - What advice you have for someone who was in your shoes? Blake Koch thought he needed experience. So it’s better to drive a quality car in a winning race car and run up front. Q10 – How did you come up with FilterTime? In 2013 - lost a sponsor - and thought, what shall I do? Trying to get big money, 3 weeks of super hard work. But not a single door opened. When he went shopping - he forgot the filters and that’s when he found out there was a need for it. As the ‘aha’ moment came. He didn’t get paid - so started driver coaching, FS 1 was an analyst - while building a business online. The doors that opened were unbelievable.    Q11 In 2019 you turned down racing? December 2018 - a once in a lifetime opportunity came - so had to chose that. Q12 - Where is the time for anything else? He decided the best thing for his family was filtered time. So he stepped away from racing, for the time being, get the business rolling. Still a driver coach, still an analyst and running filterTime so it was hard finding time for anything else. Q13 - What similarities are there between FilterTime and driving? It’s totally different. The downfall is pressure, constantly at the back of your brain, expected to bring in the wins, so take risks but don’t break the car so not too much risk, are you going to have a job next year, is your sponsor happy? A lot of anxiety, very few things under your control, always thinking about racing even when you are with your family, but there are perks to it - you have a PR person, you have your schedule you have press-release, SM, when you come out the car you have a hat, sunglasses, and a cold towel. So you are treated really well. But as a business owner, the results come out of how much work you put in. So now I’m able to put in all this work and not worried about someone firing me. So the effort I put it, especially since I like working, = customers, future for my family. Everything with FilterTime was from scratch, answering emails, SM the website it’s all Blake. It’s pressure - but you can trust yourself. You have a lot more control of the success - here is the similarity - it was all about fans. With filterTime feels like fans. Blake Koch emails them, talks to them and customer interaction. Q14 - What do you want to leave with the fans? Being passionate - you can’t worry about the results. Listen to the bible, podcasts, positive people - you can be happier no matter what you are doing. Set goals and chase your dreams.
