Cumulatively, over the 3 stops of the 2024 World Cup circuit, Kate Douglass and Regan Smith broke 5 worlds records, 11 American records, and earned over $330,000. And they did it all for the plot. Even though the duo planned to attend the World Cup together months in advance, neither had many expectations going into the series after taking substantial time out of the pool following the Olympic Games in Paris. Both Smith and Douglass' number one priority was enjoying their time together and rolling with whatever was thrown their way, which ended up being quite a lot. However, the Olympic champions took what came to them in stride, improving at each of the three stops and ending the series as the top two performers and money earners.

The NFL and swimming are not the same. In a world where coaches have a very short leash, a team that has a couple down years of performance along with some key high-profile athlete departures can be enough to sound the alarm. Thankfully, perhaps because its a sport based on longer term success over a 4-year period or greater, we were not robbed of the ultimate triumph we witnessed in Paris. For Greg Meehan, the last few years have been anything but easy. The longtime Stanford Head Women's Coach has been at the helm of some of the greatest NCAA teams ever assembled with names like Katie Ledecky, Simone Manuel, Maya Dirado and Ella Eastin. But following the dominance of that unprecedented era, the program naturally regressed a tad. Some elite swimmers elected to find a change of scenery (Ledecky) and then other big names came to The Farm, only to leave early with medium results (Regan Smith and Claire Curzan). That put a lot of pressure and negativity on the Stanford program with many questioning its future, including its leader Greg Meehan. But great coaches have ups and downs just the same as athletes. Every team they coach is not the same. Every year comes with a new set of challenges and circumstances - and opportunities. In Paris, Greg Meehan and his star pupil Torri Huske celebrated. Huske's dramatic 100 fly victory over world record holder Gretchen Walsh, along with her other individual and relay performances culminated in Huske becoming the winningest American swimmer at the Games. And with that, Huske and Meehan put all the doubts to rest, and one of the best coaches in the world today has yet another Stanford gold medal for recruits to hear about so he can keep building the machine. Olympic gold medalist Regan Smith is back home in Minnesota after an amazing run at the summer Olympic Games in Paris. The 22-year-old Lakeville native won two gold medals, three silvers and set a world record in the 100 meter backstroke.But her path to Paris wasn't easy. Smith was struggling during the Tokyo games. And she worked a lot on herself outside of the pool to prepare for Paris. Smith shared the difficulties she faced and how she's overcame them with MPR News guest host Nina Moini.

Heading into the 2024, Regan Smith had been one Olympics, won 3 medals there, won 9 world championship medals, won an NCAA title, and set 3 world records. But none of it was enough to make Smith feel good about her accomplishments in the pool. Since the 2022 season, Smith has been slowly working on changing how she views her swimming and the success that comes with it. For much of her career, she would enter a race and feel immense pressure to win, to the point that she would derail herself before she even hit the water. Heading into her races in Paris, she was able to see herself as a fan might, as pure entertainment, and with that came the freedom to swim her own race. Regan walked away from Paris with 3 silver medals in her individual events and 2 gold medals as a part of Team USA relays. Then before he and the Sun Devils had even dried off after their victorious jump into the pool at NCAAs, Bob shocked the swimming world with a cruel April Fools non-joke by announcing his departure from ASU on April 1, 2024 to take the head job at Texas, stepping into some of the biggest shoes imaginable to take over for the legend Eddie Reese. Coming into July 2024, Regan Smith was a world record-holder, 2x Olympian, and favored to medal in all 3 of her individual events in Paris. So SwimSwam sat down with the world champion's coach from ages 13-19, Mike Parratto, to discuss her rise to the top of the world stage. Arizona State has been having a heck of a season so far and it's barely November. In dual meets against Georgia and NC State, where both teams were wearing technical racing suits, ASU's men came away with decisive wins while their women showed a lot of promise. Mike Parratto has a very unique perspective on greatness, having coached two Olympians more than two decades apart. In this SwimSwam Podcast chat he goes into details about both Jenny Thompson's and Regan Smith's road to greatness. Mike tells stories about each of them having races at young ages that showed their unique abilities. He also gets into some pretty amazing sets from both of them. On top of coaching Olympians he's also father to one, as his daughter Jessica made the 2016 and 2020 US Olympic Team, winning a Silver Medal in synchro diving. Success and swimming run in the family. Mike's wife Amy has coached with him for 40 years. He gives some insight into that family dynamic and what makes them such good partners. He and Amy spent 26 years at Seacoast Swim Association in New Hampshire before moving to Indianapolis to support Jessica's diving. They now coach at Riptide Swim Team in Apple Valley, Minnesota.
