There's a call for the Kenyan police to unconditionally release human rights activist Boniface Mwangi who was arrested Sunday morning. A police spokesperson confirmed Mwangi's arrest to VOA and where he is being detained but declined to say why. Local media quote Mwangi's wife as saying that six people arrested her husband at their home. The Kenya Standard say Mwangi had called for a protest against the government. Martha Karua, leader of the National Rainbow Coalition – Kenya party, tells VOA's James Butty, Mwangi should be released unconditionally because the Kenyan Constitution protects citizens against arbitrary arrests
Honderde Keniane het 'n konsert in die hoofstad, Nairobi, bygewoon, ter herdenking van die minstens 39 mense wat in onlangse jeug-geleide betogings teen die regering dood is. Boniface Mwangi is a Nairobi-based social justice activist fighting for equity in his home country and abroad. In 2007 his photos of violence following the national election went viral and spawned global attention on political instability and corruption in Kenya. He is the subject of the Sundance-award winning documentary Softie and the author of the photojournalism book Unbounded which has been hailed by Hilary Clinton and President Barack Obama. Over two million people follow him @bonifacemwangi on Twitter and Facebook where he remarkably fearlessly calls attention to untold cases of abuse, corruption, and cronyism. For his work he has been beaten, arrested for “organizing a revolution”, and had his home burned down. His 2014 TED Talk is called “The Day I Stood Alone” and in it he shares that he's called a heckler, troublemaker, irritant, rebel, activist, and … the voice of the people. He continues to fight for justice every day alongside his wife Hellen Njeri Mwangi and their three children. Boniface joined me from Nairobi, Kenya and I think you're going to feel as inspired and energized by this conversation as I was. We talk about what it's like advocating for the most vulnerable, whether we can trust photographs today, how you deal with intimidation, how you live in fearlessness, how you bring back dignity to an oppressed people, why we must all seek to become activists, and, of course, what are Boniface's 3 most formative books. This is an exciting, engaging, passion-filled conversation. Let's flip the page into Chapter 104 now… What You'll Learn: How do we advocate for the vulnerable? What was the single greatest act of giving in the modern world? How do you deal with intimidation when you have a family? How do you become an activist? What are the biggest issues in Kenya right now? Why is it so hard to travel as a black person? What should African unity bring? How was the mafia brought down in Italy? How do you live in fearlessness? Why must we all be activists? You can find show notes and more information by clicking here: https://www.3books.co/chapters/104 Leave us a voicemail. We talk about Sam Soko's 'Softie'. Filmed over 7 years, Softie is a documentary film about Kenyan political activitst Boniface Mwangi who journeys over the years from photojournalist, to activist to running for MP of Starehe constituency in Nairobi. The films look at this journey from his perspective and his families perspectives showing the difficulties for both of them. We discuss this film with the amazing, fellow podcaster Audrey Kawire Wabwire, listen to her podcast Power of the Streets which features young Africans leading human rights activism. In the first season, she speaks to some of the people leading the #metoo movement in Africa.
CMBL founder Ciru Karanja sits down with Kenyan activist Boniface Mwangi and they discuss the currently flawed system of life in Kenya, both believing that everyone deserves equality. They also discuss the importance of mental health and the stigma behind talking about them.
Kicking things off as our first official guest of Season 2 is award-winning Kenyan documentary producer, Toni Kamau. We chatted with Toni about growing up in Nairobi and the Sheng slang she picked up there, her approach to uniquely telling the story of renowned Kenyan political activist Boniface Mwangi in festival favorite doc Softie, and our collective experiences realizing that the TV show Friends did not in fact reflect our real lives. “Softie” follows Kenyan journalist Boniface Mwangi and his wife Njeri as their family faces death threats when he runs for Parliament. Filmmaker Sam Soko explores both the political and personal challenges of standing up for your beliefs.
In this episode, Simon and Tony review Boniface Mwangi & Sam Soko's 2020 documentary, Softie. They talk about how difficult it is to lead a life as an influential political activist in Kenya; the indignities of poverty; the slow but steady trudge towards a ballot revolution in Kenya; civic illiteracy; the myth of the poor, rational voter; family & fatherhood; and many other topics. Njeri Mwangi and I spend this episode talking, laughing and shedding a few tears as we talk about the importance of human rights. I had a great conversation with Sam Soko, the Director of Softie, a documentary film about activist Boniface Mwangi, his wife Njeri and their children.
The directorial debut of Sam Soko, SOFTIE is an intimate look at the life of Boniface Mwangi, a daring and audacious Kenyan photojournalist and activist who fights for Kenyan citizens to change a corrupt political system; his supportive wife Njeri stands by him and was often protesting alongside him. Now that they three small children, her priorities have shifted. Boniface on the other hand, decided to take his ideas further and run for political office. He claims he is fighting for his children and their future, but after receiving serious threats of violence, Njeri worries he is risking the safety of their entire family. Boniface is forced to face a difficult choice - which should come first, family or country? SOFTIE, the winner of the World Cinema Documentary Special Jury Award for Editing at the Sundance Film Festival, is now streaming as part of Hot Docs Film Festival Online. SOFTIE will have its North American broadcast premiere on October 12 as a part of the award-winning PBS documentary series POV. Director Sam Solo joins us for a conversation on his intimate, moving portrait of Boniface “Softie” Mwangi, a man willing to sacrifice everything for his country and his family. We're taking you back to Sundance 2020 where we got to talk about the documentary Softie with the film's director, Sam Soko, and subjects Boniface Mwangi, and his wife Njeri Mwangi. Along with being a very powerful film about an underdog activist running for political office, it's also the first film from Kenya to ever premiere at Sundance! We get into the corruption and misinformation in Kenyan politics, Boni's journey from photojournalist to political candidate, and how they all risked their lives in being part of his story. The sacrifice it takes to put your life's purpose ahead of your own self interests has tough consequences for a family, but it is something that we, as constituents, hope for in a political leader. We can all use more people like Softie leading our country, and we wish him all the best in future endeavors.Find Softie streaming in virtual cinemas right now!Be well, stay safe, Black Lives Matter, and thank you for wearing a mask.--Buy us a cup of coffee!Subscribe to our channel on YouTube for behind the scenes footage!Rate and review us wherever you listen to podcasts!Visit our website! www.bitchtalkpodcast.comFollow us on Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter.Listen every other Thursday 9:30 - 10 am on BFF.FMPOWERED BY GO-TO Productions
Sam Soko and Face2Face host David Peck talk about his new film Softie, the failure of the system, racism and violence, civil liberty and human rights, photo journalism, the idea of possibility and why you can’t empty a dirty river.TrailerSynopsis:Boniface “Softie” Mwangi has long fought injustices in his country as a political activist. Now he’s taking the next step by running for office in a regional Kenyan election. From the moment Boniface decides to run, telling his wife, Njeri, in passing with a hesitant laugh, he responds to each challenge with optimism. But running a clean campaign against corrupt opponents becomes increasingly harder to combat with idealism alone. And Boniface soon finds that challenging strong political dynasties is putting his family at risk. Should country really come before family, as he’s always believed?Softie is director and producer Sam Soko’s first feature documentary filmed over the course of five years. After meeting the character Boniface Mwangi, nicknamed ‘Softie” by his close friends and family in 2013, Soko, who had directed several short music videos and films by that time, decided to try his hand at directing a documentary. What started out as a short video, that he had planned to take a year filming, evolved into a story about politics, family and what it means to be Kenyan. Four years into Soko filming chaos filled street protests against corruption, police brutality, extra judicial killings, Softie decided to run for a political seat in his old neighbourhood Starehe.Soko knew he had a possible ending for a film, and pushed to do one more year of filming as his political campaign would give a much needed insight into the political and voting process in Kenya. But the material he filmed went far beyond that and gave insight into a young family, in a young democracy that was struggling to balance their love for their country with the needs of their family, a universal story that Soko felt that audiences across the world could be able to connect to a visceral level.About Sam:Sam Soko is a film director and producer based in Nairobi who seeks out stories that enable him to engage in socio-political spaces. His work on civic literacy projects in music, non-fiction and fiction has allowed him to connect with artists around the world. He is co-founder of LBx Africa, a Kenyan production company that service produced the 2018 Oscar nominated short fiction film Watu Wote.Soko's first feature documentary film, Softie, is set to premiere at the Sundance Festival in 2020.Image Copyright and Credit: Sam Soko and EyeSteel Films.F2F Music and Image Copyright: David Peck and Face2Face. In episode 30 I had the privilege to have a conversation with Boniface Mwangi who has risen from poverty to prominence in Kenya. He is renowned for his powerful photographs and his courageous protests calling for social justice. He is an award-winning Kenyan photojournalist and human rights activist. He was a staff photographer with The Standard, a leading Kenyan newspaper, for four years. He became the eye of Kenyans during the 2007/8 post- election violence and showed courage and compassion to capture thousands of images; some so gory they could not be published. His work has appeared in leading publications in the world — from The New York Times to The Guardian and Chicago Tribune, Los Angeles Times, The International Herald Tribune, The Sunday Times, The Telegraph and The Boston Globe among others. In 2012 Boniface founded PAWA254, a hub for creatives in Kenya where journalists, artists and activists find innovative ways of achieving social change. He studied human rights and documentary photography at New York University, USA. He has twice won the CNN Multichoice Africa Photojournalist of the Year Award and is the youngest Prince Claus Laureate. New African Magazine named him one of the 100 Most Influential Africans of 2014 and 2016 and he is also a senior TED Fellow. Time magazine recognized him as a Next Generation Leader in 2015 and was selected as Kenya’s Top 40 under 40 men 2016. He was named as top 100 Kenyans 2019. Boniface Mwangi continues to wage a spirited campaign against oppressive establishments. We are 60 days away from the 2017 General Election, and this week, we talk to Scheaffer Okore, the vice chairperson of the Ukweli Party, on what it means to be an active citizen, why they founded the party, what challenges they faced when starting it, how they are different from other political parties, how they propose to increase the representation of the youth, women and other marginalized groups in power, why they are crowd-funding chairperson Boniface Mwangi's campaign for Starehe MP, and most importantly, how they want to change Kenya through governance and leadership. Many Kenyans will tell you that whenever they see our national flag, or hear the national anthem, they feel their hearts swell with pride. Why? Because the flag and our anthem make them feel patriotic - proud to be Kenyan. This is possibly what Boniface Mwangi, a well known activist, felt when he went to the cinema on 27th November 2016, only to look around and see some people not standing for the national anthem. So he yelled at them until they stood. I found this odd - so I decided to dissect this phenomena in this episode. Is patriotism a good or bad thing? Press play to find out!
