In this episode of The Valley Today, host Janet Michael welcomed Kristen Gregg and Aliyha Gill from the Phoenix Project. Janet, who also serves as the Vice Chair of the United Way Northern Shenandoah Valley Board of Directors and this year's campaign chair, started the discussion reflecting on her dual role. Kristen is a children's advocate, and Aliyha is a sexual assault advocate at the Phoenix Project. They began by discussing the Phoenix Project's mission in Warren County, providing solutions to domestic and sexual violence through services like a 24-hour hotline, financial assistance, crisis intervention, and shelter. Kristen and Aliyha elaborated on their specific roles, highlighting their supportive counseling and advocacy work. Kristen focused on educational programs for children and parents, while Aliyha discussed accompanying survivors during forensic exams and providing counseling. The conversation then covered the Day of Caring Project, where Shenandoah Valley Orthodontics built playground equipment at the Phoenix Project site. Kristen explained the significance of having a safe outdoor space for children during their parents' counseling sessions. A key part of the discussion was the Healing Art Group supported by a United Way Impact Grant. Aliyha shared details about the program, which helps survivors of domestic and sexual violence express emotions through art. Both Kristen and Aliyha stressed the therapeutic benefits of art in the healing process. The conversation also touched on the Empty Place at the Table campaign, a national initiative to honor victims of domestic violence homicides by setting up empty table displays in public places like restaurants. This provides a discreet way for people to access information and support. October being Domestic Violence Awareness Month, the Phoenix Project's activities included putting up purple ribbons across local businesses and the courthouse to raise awareness. Additionally, the Wine Pull event on October 10th was highlighted as a major fundraiser. The conversation concluded with Kristen and Aaliyah discussing how the community can support the Phoenix Project through volunteering, donations of gift cards, and other contributions. They also shared their 24/7 hotline number, 540-635-2300, and emphasized the importance of maintaining confidentiality and financial autonomy for their clients. Kristen and Aaliyah provided information about their website and social media channels, urging listeners to visit for more details and resources. If anyone knows exactly what to order at Kristen's Kitchen — a local food truck serving crab cake and steak sandwiches — it is Kristen's husband and business partner Rob Bortone. "Yeah, I'm a steak and potatoes kinda guy, I always love to have me a steak and cheese," Rob said with a smile. The Bortones started their business in 2021, after Kristen lost her job at a gym during COVID closures. Both Kristen and Rob had previously worked in the restaurant industry and decided to take the leap. “We actually met 20 years ago at a restaurant where we...Article LinkSupport the Show.
Hi folks, John here. Both Kristen and I are in the field talking to sources and trying to get close to the people in the rooms where decisions are made. We hear you about the audio quality - it's not the best it could be, but if you can bear with us, we'll back in our home studios soon. Until then, we hope you enjoy our timely, insightful and most importantly, free(!) content.Who noticed the NATO summit even happened? The shadow Biden's future cast over the proceedings obscured the relatively important takeaways from the two day summit. And isn't that the problem? If the president's future is more important than the work he's elected to do, it feels a little like the tail is wagging the dog. John and Kristen discuss the implications of the US political drama and what it means.
In this conversation on race, Simma The Inclusionist talks with Kristen Sharpe, CEO of Non-profit Makeover, and Deedee De La Cruz, Director of Demand Generation for GiveSmart. Why is there a lack of diversity in leadership roles within nonprofit organizations? Our two guests shed light on the reason that less than 20% of executive positions are held by people of color nonprofits. Kristen Sharpe and Deedee De La Cruz, acknowledge the historical overrepresentation of white individuals in nonprofit leadership positions. There is an urgent need for greater diversity in these roles, particularly considering that many nonprofits serve people of color and low-income communities. The lack of diversity in leadership can lead to a lack of representation, support, and mentorship for CEOs of color. The episode raises the question of how nonprofits can prioritize diversity within leadership roles and suggests that providing people of color with a seat at the table, opportunities to serve, and a platform for their voices and ideas can help address this issue. Both Kristen and Deedee share their personal journeys as women of color and how they achieved their high level of success in the non-profit world when neither of them came from business backgrounds. They also share how race and their economic backgrounds influenced the decisions they made to reach their goals. Both women tell stories of how they dealt with "Imposter Syndrome," and offer solutions for other women, specifically women of color who may be experiencing the same. They emphasize the importance of adopting a mindset that recognizes an abundance of wealth and opportunity. Kristen Sharpe challenges the prevailing belief in the nonprofit world that resources are scarce and insufficient to support multiple causes and organizations. Using the analogy of restaurants, she highlights the existence of numerous different establishments in every community, catering to different interests and preferences. Similarly, she argues that individuals can support multiple causes and organizations, just as they can donate to both the St. Jude's Foundation and organizations that support children in foster care. Kristen and Deedee both aim to empower nonprofit leaders of color to raise money on autopilot using technology and social media. By sharing opportunities and fostering conversations within the community, they both believe that everyone can contribute to philanthropic efforts and collectively make a difference. She challenges the notion that access to resources and opportunities is limited, emphasizing that there is ample room for collaboration and support across various causes and organizations. Deedee and Kristen both discuss the importance of leveraging technology, specifically GiveSmart, to bridge the gap and revolutionize nonprofit operations. She emphasizes that nonprofits unfamiliar with technology may be missing out on valuable opportunities. By partnering with GiveSmart, nonprofits can learn how to effectively utilize technology and maximize its potential. Kristen utilized technology, including GiveSmart, to raise over a quarter million dollars during the pandemic. She emphasizes that this achievement was accomplished without traditional methods such as ads, events, mailers, or galas. This success demonstrates the power of technology in enabling nonprofits to raise funds on autopilot. Time Stamps [00:02:27] Why talking about race is important. GUESS WHAT?! We have proof that purgatory is real... it's called the Airport. I think most of us can agree that the airport can be a stressful place, especially when you come into contact with other disgruntled and weary travelers. And of course, the process of getting through security line doesn't help! If you've been selected for a "random security check" you know what we mean. Both Kristen and Claire have had their fair share of airport mishaps and frustrations that we think everyone who travels can relate to. Another week another episode of the best podcast ya heard today! The team kicks things off with everyone's latest favorite internet hypothetical: “She's a 10 but…” Can Lume accept a flat-earther?! How many points is a boat worth?? Is Snapchat a legit form of communication? Is there a difference between a simple phone block vs a full on embargo aka phone, text, socials, Xbox live (smh)!?! Next, Kristen gives a long-time-coming update on a roster mainstay. No spoilers here, but let's just say the CEO ain't holding back as we approach her birthday trade deadline. Then, the crew get all the way into it debating what has apparently been a recent YouTuber hot topic, are 90% of men unattractive? Whether true or untrue, are men and/or women too shallow these days? Both Kristen and Lume's takes my surprise you. A full circle moment remixed as the show closes with more “He's a 10 but…” Hardcore gamers? Inexperienced men? Non-sports fans? We love a hypothetical this time of year! QQH (45:00): Lume gets things started with a storytime of a fake Cricket league and some Russian gamblers (yes this is real), which spirals into a sidebar to explain the CEO beloved concept of a “wake and cash”. More story time as Kristen questions whether one bride should proceed with festivities after a positive COVID test. Lastly, it's a little late but the Quaranteam could NOT let Ex-Minnesota Viking Matt Birk's anti-abortion/anti… women having careers (!?!?!?!?) slide.

Welcome to Prophecy Radio, a Percy Jackson podcast dedicated to all of Rick Riordan's past, present, and future projects! Co-hosts Karen and Kristen team up for their first ever episode of a brand new Percy Jackson podcast, in which they introduce themselves, discuss the latest Rick Riordan news, and analyze the first two chapters of The Lightning Thief. Read the complete breakdown of the episode below, and don't forget to follow us on Twitter @ProphecyPodcast and email us at ProphecyRadioPodcast@gmail.com. Introductions What is Prophecy Radio gonna be about? Meet your co-hosts! Who are Kristen and Karen? Hypable has been hugely important to both of us. Karen has been covering Percy Jackson for 10 years! Kristen loves movies and TV and books and likes getting paid to talk about them. Karen really likes Teen Wolf and sometimes she writes books. Now that Hypable is closing its doors, what's next? Introducing Subjectify Media, our new passion project. How did we come up with the name Prophecy Radio? Huge thanks to Angelica for designing our logo. She's a genius! We have some lofty aspirations for this podcast. Karen wants a set visit. Is that crazy? Both Kristen and Karen bring a lot of journalistic experience to the table. We also really want to talk to fellow PJO fans, young and old. Who WOULDN'T want to be a superhero?? News & Updates Let's start off with some updates on the Percy Jackson Disney+ series. Thank you, Rick, Becky, and Ashlee for keeping us updated on everything! Most of these updates come from Rick's blog (August 21 and July 13). There's no official greenlight, but we're well on our way! Pre-production takes SO...LONG, so try to be patient. The writers' room is full of incredible people, including Jon Steinberg and Dan Shotz, Rick and Becky, and many more! Have you watched Black Sails? Shoutout to all the kids who help make these major YA adaptations happen! Anyone else play Stardew Valley? What about Subnautica? We're definitely doing an episode on The Lightning Thief Musical. Who's Team Halloween and who's Team Christmas? Location scouting, pilot director, and casting, oh my! We have too many thoughts on potential casting to discuss just yet. Yes, 2023 seems ages away, but it'll go fast! Now it's time to talk about what we know regarding the Kane Chronicles adaptation. Fair warning: It's not much. Netflix! *shakes fist* Why are you so frustrating!? NetflixLife and Fandom at least has some information for us. Mergers are so confusing, but that's why Netflix got Kane Chronicles. Karen wants a giant crossover a la the MCU. If we're lucky, maybe we'll get the first KC movie in 2022. How much is Rick involved with this series? Eventually Netflix has to tell us something! Last, but certainly not least, let's talk about the upcoming books in 2021! We're going to talk about Cursed Carnival and Other Calamities next week. This would be a really good way to dip your toes into the RRP books. Next up is Daughter of the Deep! We're talking about that in episode 3. We're also going to attend the virtual event for the book's launch. A new Rick story? Happy birthday to Kristen! Don't forget about Tristan Strong Keeps Punching, which also comes out on Oct. 5. Chapter Reviews Kristen walks us through the first two chapters of The Lightning Thief. In ReWatchable fashion, we go through our favorite quotes and favorite moments. Guys, we really love Grover. Percy is a hot mess when we first meet him. There's nothing funnier than the little hints Rick gives us about who Mr. Brunner really is. Peanut butter and ketchup sandwiches can't be a real thing. Right!? Shoutout to There's a Monster at the End of This Book (even though Kristen's not a fan). The message of this book speaks to readers young and old. Mr. Brunner was totally gaslighting Percy about Mrs. Dodds! Omg Grover's little business card was so cute. Keep your eye out for a socked creature. Rick's, like, a really good writer. This isn't news, but we need to say it anyway. Why can't Percy go see his mom?? The Fates are super freaky. We don't blame you for avoiding eye contact, Grover. If you have any thoughts on these first two chapters, make sure you send us a message! Thanks for listening, and be sure to tune in next week for episode 2, which will discuss The Cursed Carnival and Other Calamities. This episode's hosts are: Karen Rought and Kristen Kranz. Each episode, our Prophecy Radio hosts and their guests will keep you up to date on the latest information coming out of Camp Half-Blood, including upcoming books and adaptation news, discuss a topic of choice, and do a chapter by chapter reread of the Percy Jackson series.
