Confronting the Lack of Diversity in Nonprofit Leadership

In this conversation on race, Simma The Inclusionist talks with Kristen Sharpe, CEO of Non-profit Makeover, and Deedee De La Cruz, Director of Demand Generation for GiveSmart. Why is there a lack of diversity in leadership roles within nonprofit organizations? Our two guests shed light on the reason that less than 20% of executive positions are held by people of color nonprofits. Kristen Sharpe and Deedee De La Cruz, acknowledge the historical overrepresentation of white individuals in nonprofit leadership positions. There is an urgent need for greater diversity in these roles, particularly considering that many nonprofits serve people of color and low-income communities. The lack of diversity in leadership can lead to a lack of representation, support, and mentorship for CEOs of color. The episode raises the question of how nonprofits can prioritize diversity within leadership roles and suggests that providing people of color with a seat at the table, opportunities to serve, and a platform for their voices and ideas can help address this issue. Both Kristen and Deedee share their personal journeys as women of color and how they achieved their high level of success in the non-profit world when neither of them came from business backgrounds. They also share how race and their economic backgrounds influenced the decisions they made to reach their goals. Both women tell stories of how they dealt with "Imposter Syndrome," and offer solutions for other women, specifically women of color who may be experiencing the same. They emphasize the importance of adopting a mindset that recognizes an abundance of wealth and opportunity. Kristen Sharpe challenges the prevailing belief in the nonprofit world that resources are scarce and insufficient to support multiple causes and organizations. Using the analogy of restaurants, she highlights the existence of numerous different establishments in every community, catering to different interests and preferences. Similarly, she argues that individuals can support multiple causes and organizations, just as they can donate to both the St. Jude's Foundation and organizations that support children in foster care. Kristen and Deedee both aim to empower nonprofit leaders of color to raise money on autopilot using technology and social media. By sharing opportunities and fostering conversations within the community, they both believe that everyone can contribute to philanthropic efforts and collectively make a difference. She challenges the notion that access to resources and opportunities is limited, emphasizing that there is ample room for collaboration and support across various causes and organizations. Deedee and Kristen both discuss the importance of leveraging technology, specifically GiveSmart, to bridge the gap and revolutionize nonprofit operations. She emphasizes that nonprofits unfamiliar with technology may be missing out on valuable opportunities. By partnering with GiveSmart, nonprofits can learn how to effectively utilize technology and maximize its potential. Kristen utilized technology, including GiveSmart, to raise over a quarter million dollars during the pandemic. She emphasizes that this achievement was accomplished without traditional methods such as ads, events, mailers, or galas. This success demonstrates the power of technology in enabling nonprofits to raise funds on autopilot.   Time Stamps [00:02:27] Why talking about race is important. I want that just as much as they want to receive that.” “Selling to me is just people. It's understanding people that have problems with pain, and helping them solve it.” On being a sales leader, “We should get behind that and support people in whatever it takes to get them what they want. Because ultimately, it's not your why it's their why. Why are they doing it? No one cares why I'm doing it. They care why they're doing it. But looking for those leaders, I definitely learned to probably be more people centric, and less, less stick.” “The more diverse of a team you have, the more difference of opinions that you have and the more differing viewpoints that you have, which only help make you more successful because it diversifies your entire team.” “What people are looking for is a team” Links:   Jeremy Painkin's LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/jeremypainkin/ Community Brands: https://www.communitybrands.com/ #sales #podcast #salesleaddog #leadership #salesleaddog #teambuilding

The Great Customer Resignation & How to Reduce Customer Churn with Craig Charlton, #211

Selling With Social Sales Podcast

The past three years have seen radical shifts in the B2B sales landscape. From sales organizations having to go from in-person selling to virtual selling, to shifting how prospecting is done by leveraging online tools – there has been a lot to navigate. As sales leaders and sales teams have been focused on prospecting faster and more efficiently, there has been a quiet epidemic happening in the background. Getting prospective customers into the sales funnel is part of the battle, but converting them and keeping them as customers is a whole other challenge. With so many options on the market and an oversaturation of generic sales and marketing messages, the retention strategies and personalization techniques used to retain customers must also evolve. But, exactly how to prevent what one sales expert calls the “Great Customer Resignation” is the topic of this episode of the Modern Selling Podcast. I'm excited to welcome a phenomenal guest who spends quite a bit of time researching the ins and outs of customer satisfaction and retention. Craig Charlton, CEO of SugarCRM has spent over 25 years building and running high-growth businesses. Prior to joining SugarCRM in 2019, he was CEO of Oildex, a provider of financial automation software and services for the oil and gas industry, where he helped the company achieve 150% bookings growth, leading to the company's acquisition by Drillinginfo. Before joining Oildex, Craig was CEO of Abila, a provider of financial and CRM software and services to associations, nonprofit organizations, and governmental entities. Abila, which was acquired by Community Brands, grew its revenues threefold and transformed its revenue base to a subscription-based (SaaS) model over a three-year period. Prior to that, Charlton was senior vice president and general manager of Asia Pacific at Epicor Software Corporation, an industry-leading ERP solution provider, where he developed and executed the company's regional strategy, achieving consistent revenue and profit growth. Craig's insights into what B2B sales organizations should be doing to boost customer retention is why this is a must-listen-to episode! We'll dive into the recent stats from SugarCRM's Impact Report and decipher what the data tell us about what customers are looking for and how sales teams should be positioning their prospecting efforts. Download the full episode now and listen until the end to get every customer retention nugget! How Has Customer Churn Changed Since The Pandemic? As most sales leaders have seen, there have been noticeable shifts in how we are approaching and interacting with both prospects and customers. Here at Vengreso, our specialty is in helping B2B sales leaders and teams prospect better. Over the past 18 months, through our own research, we've found that 69% of sales professionals agree that prospecting is the hardest and most time-consuming part of their role. I wanted to know what Craig is seeing on the other side, once a prospect becomes a customer, and what's the current trend with customer churn. The data he shares is truly eye-opening, “Last year, the Global Research survey revealed that customer churn was costing midmarket companies $5.5 million a year. Our research, this year, shows that 58% of sales and marketing leaders say that churn has gotten worse over the last 12 months. This is now likely costing companies even more than $5.5 million a year! For every two customers coming in the door, one of them is leaving.” This is a remarkable number – $5.5 million in lost revenue! Join the conversation to hear what Craig says is really causing churn rates to explode and what sales leaders must do now to stop the bleeding. What Role Can CRMs Play in Reducing Customer Churn? As a sales evangelist by trade, I'm always curious to know what technology can do to help right the tide and get sales teams back on track. At Vengreso, we use a host of automation tools and systems to help us not only streamline how we prospect, but also to leverage key data that tells us how we can personalize each customer touchpoint. I wanted to hear Craig's perspective on what CRMs can do to mitigate this growing customer churn rate, especially since his company's findings suggest that 56% of sales organizations don't have the customer data they need to be effective. He shares three key insights: Increased visibility. CRMs can help sales leaders have a better view of what customers are likely to churn so they can proactively reach out to nurture that relationship. Improved personalization. When sales reps know what a customer needs and can tailor any communication to what's relevant to that customer – it's a win-win. A good CRM can be critical in creating highly personalized nurture, onboarding, and engagement campaigns. Better sales tracking. Without a robust CRM, it's hard to ever truly quantify how effective prospecting and marketing efforts are. According to SugarCRM's current research, some 54% of all leads are either poorly or underqualified. Having a proven CRM solution can easily identify the gaps in prospecting and sales to help reps and sales leaders figure out a better path forward. What's Holding Sales Teams Back From Keeping Customers?   This is a rather loaded question, but Craig and I dive deep into what the real solution may be. In my view, there are a host of factors at play. However, I'm a big proponent of the importance of providing world-class training to all sales reps that focuses on how to prospect with intention, personalization, and communicating value in mind. Our PVC Methodology for Prospecting outlines each one of these critical steps to engage with prospects in a way that makes them want to become customers. I have Criag walk through his ideas on the topic, “The biggest drawback to reducing customer churn is CRM adoption. Many sales teams have a CRM of some sort, but they're usually not properly trained on how to use its automation and are often unaware of the full features their CRM may offer. Sales teams should be leveraging AI as much as possible to know exactly which customers are at risk of leaving and how to best engage with them. Sadly, so many B2B sales teams aren't doing this.” Automation is a BIG productivity driver for us at Vengreso. This is why we've created THE best business productivity tool on the planet – FlyMSG. With it, sales teams (and other teams too) can reduce the time waste copying and pasting messages to customers and free up their time to focus on other strategic tasks. But, FlyMSG is just one tool we talk about. Towards the end of our conversation, Craig shares a host of actionable tools and steps sales leaders can take right now to get the most out of the CRM to instantly boost customer retention. When it comes to training design, perhaps focusing on what people need to be able to do, not simply what they need to know, can make all the difference. That’s because this leads to activity-centered training rather than traditional information presentations. These concepts are what led Cathy Moore, speaker, training designer, and author of Map It: The Hands-On Guide to Strategic Training Design, to create the action mapping model. With a global mission to “accelerate the world toward 21st century education and workplace infrastructures, address inequity with student and employee centric models, and connect the fragmented ecosystem of stakeholders into a unified hub of innovation”, Learning Economy is focused on solving some of the world’s toughest challenges. And how do they plan to accomplish their ambitious mission? A key way is through blockchain, the technology that allows for capturing and tracking digital data in a very secure and decentralized way while ensuring integrity and transparency. Utilizing blockchain, Learning Economy hopes to establish a protocol that can bring together data from every source of education for every learner, to understand where value may - or may not - be created. In this episode of the Leading Learning Podcast, Jeff talks with Learning Economy’s Chief Strategy Advisor, Taylor Kendal and Community Director, Duncan Cox, about how they’re using blockchain to change how we track individual learning and the idea of an open education graph to provide a visualization of the value being generated across the supply chain of education. They also discuss what they describe as the four archenemies of what they’re up against and share about a pilot that Learning Economy is getting ready to launch in Colorado that will provide a concrete point of reference for implementing the protocol more broadly. After working three decades for various large, global companies, John Stepper – a self-described “accidental entrepreneur” – began searching for ways to get more out of work and life. This search is what ultimately led him to create Working Out Loud, an approach to building relationships that helps you achieve a goal by making contributions over time that you make visible to others. Not only does the process increase access to more people, knowledge, and opportunities, but it leads to greater feelings of empowerment, confidence, and motivation as well. And his book, Working Out Loud: For a Better Career and Life, guides you through the twelve-week mastery program to help you put the approach into practice yourself and then turn that practice into a sustainable habit. In this episode of the Leading Learning Podcast, Celisa talks with John about the concept of working out loud including its five basic elements, ways it benefits participants, and related common barriers. They also discuss how to set the stage for successfully working out loud and ways to structure the working out loud experience through Working Out Loud circles. When trying to understand what it takes to succeed in the education business –particularly when it comes to increasing sales – there are many factors to consider. And it usually doesn’t have anything to do with having the latest bells and whistles, or perhaps a huge catalog of offerings. In fact, what we’ve observed over two decades of extensive research and consulting, is that it typically comes down to three fundamental areas. In this episode, we examine the three factors that often impact and limit sales of education. We also discuss the important takeaways and questions learning businesses need to consider when trying to achieve success in each of these key areas. With the launch of a new event recently behind us, we wanted to devote some time to reflect on the experience. And, as we have done with past Leading Learning events, we are utilizing the After Action Review (AAR) as a framework to guide that reflection process. For those that might not be aware, the new event - Live Review 2019 - was a two-day, entirely online offering that allowed participants a chance to get targeted demos from 14 learning platforms focused on learning businesses and committed to serving organizations that market and sell lifelong learning, continuing education, and professional development. In this episode of the Leading Learning Podcast, Jeff and Celisa reflect on Live Review using the guiding components of AAR: what it is they set out to do, what actually happened, why there was a difference between the two (if there was one), and what they will continue and/or change going forward. In this edition of “State of Readiness”, I interview Céline Felan, Vice President of Business Transformation at Community Brands, a software company that provides a suite of offerings for membership-based organizations, private schools and churches. Being born in Paris, France and raised in the Netherlands, Céline now calls Austin, Texas home – where she quickly learned and understood the phrase “grabbing the bull by the horns”.  In her role, she has help guide the company through 28 acquisitions over the past two (2) years.  Yes, you read that right (I even asked her to repeat that during the podcast because it seemed like quite a bit – and it is).  As such, Céline’s days are non-standard and she never really knows for certain how each day (or each acquisition) will play out.  This proved to be a considerable challenge for Céline, who is a self-professed “Type-A Perfectionist”.  She had to learn and understand that “80 is the new 100”.   Over time, Community Brands has created an “acquisition checklist”, but it is imperfect so it’s more of a guideline than a checklist. Most of the acquisitions are of small(ish) companies.  As such, the corporate culture is that of their founders.  Community brands strives to maintain the individualism of the company from a cultural perspective – keeping in mind to preserve what might keep the employees happy such as having taco-Tuesdays or allowing pets to come to the office, but making sure that the companies learn the “team colors” and fight under the corporate flag.  The acquired companies are also expected to remain where they are geographically with consolidations being mostly in the General and Administrative functions where services can be shared. Host: Joseph Paris, Founder of the;  XONITEK Group of Companies,  Operational Excellence Society & Readiness Institute Guest: Céline Felan About Céline Felan Dedicated to expanding business capabilities, fostering innovation, driving operational efficiencies and adding value to clients, the organization and investors. Known for optimizing productivity, revenue, service levels, and employee performance through comprehensive organizational development strategies. Inspiring communicator and change agent motivating employees to go beyond set job descriptions. Energized, enthusiastic, and tenacious with exceptional mentoring skills and global business experience. PHILOSOPHY I enjoy every opportunity to define and drive strategy to meet our company objectives as one organization. I approach a business objective from multiple perspectives, understanding all aspects and dependencies, working across teams to define a strategy. This all-encompassing approach unifies the different departments around a common goal and path forward, driving close collaboration and accountability. It’s not unusual to be asked for feedback by a colleague or friend. And, likewise, it’s not unusual to be offered unsolicited feedback, whether from a boss, colleague, or friend. Here’s a question: how would you say most people define marketing? Our suspicion - based on a lot of experience - is that when most people think of marketing, they think of advertising, or other forms of promotion. But there's much more to marketing than promotion - and even promotion has more to it than many appreciate. In this episode, we cover the 4 Ps of marketing - product, pricing, place, and - yes - promotion. We consider each P in detail and, of course, each one applies in the  context of a learning business. Here’s a statement to consider: “You can learn new things, but you can’t really change how intelligent you are.” Would you say you mostly agree or disagree? And how about this statement: “No matter what kind of person you are, you can always change substantially.” Do you mostly agree or mostly disagree? According to Dr. Carol Dweck, author of Mindset: The New Psychology of Success, your answers to questions like these can reveal a lot about you when it comes to learning—specifically, whether you possess a fixed or growth mindset. And because mindset impacts multiple levels of what we do as learning businesses, it’s an important concept to be aware of and understand. In this episode of the Leading Learning podcast, Celisa and Jeff discuss the idea of mindset including Dweck’s research on the topic, how it affects us personally and the impact it has on learners and learning businesses. To be curious is to be human. It’s what drives us to further explore the unknown and discover what we don’t know, which means it plays a vital role in learning and engagement. Because of that, you’d expect curiosity to be something that’s encouraged by leaders and organizations. But all too often, that’s not the case. Dr. Francesca Gino, is a behavioral scientist and an award-winning Harvard Business School professor whose research shows the importance of creating a culture where curiosity is modeled and encouraged. Her most recent book, Rebel Talent: Why It Pays to Break the Rules at Work and in Life, explores people who personify “rebel talent,” and the core talents they all seem share (spoiler, curiosity is one of them). In this episode of the Leading Learning podcast, Celisa talks with Francesca about the benefits of curiosity, it’s relationship to learning, and tips on how to instill it – and other rebel talents – into learning experiences. Whether or not most of us are even aware of it, communities exist in practically all aspects of our lives and they can have a profound impact on learning. And, as this week’s guest, co-founder of the Community Roundtable, Rachel Happe puts it, “Communities are just-in-time learning mechanisms—they're containers of trust that scale beyond individual relationships.” That’s why it’s so important for us as learning leaders to be intentional and cultivate these within our organizations. In this episode of the Leading Learning podcast, Jeff talks with Rachel about the powerful role of communities including why organizations should be explicit in their management of them, ways they’ve evolved over the past decade, and what's necessary to create a successful one. My guest on the podcast this week is Adam Martel, CEO of GravytyDuring his career, Adam founded three companies and had a diverse and eclectic background in advertising, public relations, journalism and collegiate athletic coaching. His passion, however, is with fundraising. Being a seasoned major gifts fundraiser himself, he has gained a deep and personal understanding of the challenges that all nonprofit organizations face while trying to raise money to support their causes.Solving these challenges is his mission – hence he founded Gravyty, a Boston-based artificial intelligence company developing products to revolutionize frontline fundraising at nonprofit organizations.During our interview, we explore how to unlock potential beyond the value conventional business software provides us, what drives the opportunity, and what mindset is required to uncover and create completely new markets. Here are some quotes from Adam:“…we found that because we were using the CRM as the primary tool for fundraising, it was limiting the number of donors that I could get to.The thesis was that if you could have your technology learn you instead of you learning your technology, we could change the way that frontline fundraisers and sales folks interact with their tools. The tools could actually help them and be a multiplier for their efforts in building relationships. That's really where we started. We've come a long way since then but the thesis is still the same.Blackbaud, Salesforce, Ellucian and Community Brands, they're all selling databases. They're all selling the cup that holds the water, but nobody's doing anything with the water itself. We think that our work in artificial intelligence is going to define the next 5 to 10 years of what happens in fundraising in non‑profit organizationsThis isn't about Gravyty, it's about our customers. It's about the wonderful work that our customers are doing. If we can accelerate cancer research, if we can help eradicate HIV, if we can change the world and help these organizations change the world, it's our job to do that. They don't need to fit into us, we need to accelerate them”.By listening to this interview, you will learn three things:1) That for AI to reach its full potential it requires to change behaviors, not just provide insights2) That looking for abundance can provide the key to introduce transformative change3) Why UI-less experiences are the enabler for people to become far more powerful See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Are Associations Being Taken Advantage Of?

There’s a lot of money in the association space, especially when it comes to helping associations connect their members online. The biggest example of this might be the recent Community Brands merger, bringing together three software companies that collectively serve more than 13,000 associations and nonprofits. Association veteran Maggie McGray recently sounded the alarm on a big problem: Associations themselves, especially small staff associations, are the ones left holding the bag right now. Association software companies and consultants, including those from the community space who saw the money, might be doing well, but small staff associations are highly vulnerable to unexpected costs. Many of them don’t even have one full-time person focusing on their online community and membership efforts, let alone have development resources or space in their budget after already investing in these expensive software solutions, and often training, consultants and conferences to go with it. Are associations being taken advantage of, and taken for granted? We discuss: The lack of in-house community and association talent at association software vendors, as compared to their large sales teams Software vendors who used to pitch their solutions as an all-in-one that are now backing away from that What association management software companies should do from here Big Quotes “From the association staff point of view, there’s a lot of frustration with the shortcomings of [association management software] and them being built by people who’ve never run an association. It’s a software platform and a suite of functionality that has been sold for the past 20 or so years in the association space as basically, ‘If you’re an association, you need this to run your business on.’ They’ve continued to add in the bells and whistles and upsell it as, ‘You want to be all in on this.’ It’s sort of like the entire industry is beholden to this technology to the tune of anywhere from hundreds of thousands to several million to $20 million. A lot of money. Especially when you’re talking about the enterprise versions that are customized out and a lot of consultants involved in that. We’ve all bought into it. We’re all beholden to these companies.” -@maggielmcg “[Software vendors] are making a bunch of money, and they can hire a bunch of sales people and stock up. The associations, your budget is limited. Your resources are limited. Each one of these [software] changes impacts your bottom line, your staff morale, your ability to do other things, your ability to serve members. It’s really a very significant impact. There’s such a disconnect. … I’ve talked to a lot of friends offline about this deal. They’re like, ‘If I have to go back to my board and explain… I just spent two years getting buy-in for this system … if I have to now go back to them in a year and say that we need to switch again because something happened, I’m going to lose my job.'” -@maggielmcg “The problem is that association execs are the ones who are in charge of the platform selection. It’s usually either lead by IT or it’s lead by C-level. It’s pretty much never, ever lead by – it’s usually not even informed by – anybody who understands what an online community is, how it functions, what functionality you need to have.” -@maggielmcg “At least in the for-profit world, whether it’s a user community, whether it’s a brand community, there’s people in marketing. There’s people in customer service. There’s people at a high enough level who are at that table, so if the company is considering investing in a software platform for that, obviously, they want to go to the internal expert who understands what you’re trying to gain from this. In the association world, you don’t have that at all. It’s a software purchase that then is sold as, ‘You just buy this, and it’s magic. It’s member engagement, and you don’t need anybody. You just buy the software and… community!'” -@maggielmcg About Maggie McGary Maggie McGary is social media manager at the American Psychological Association (APA). She has spent more than 15 years in the association world in various marketing and communications roles. Maggie is a frequent presenter at association and industry conferences on the topics of social media and digital communications best practices, as well as a blogger whose guest posts have been featured in numerous publications including The Washington Post and Social Media Today.
