The gunmen held them captive overnight, and in the morning strapped dynamite onto their backs. Breea was shoved into a closet, while Michelle was ordered to rob the bank where she worked. She obeyed, and the next morning she cleaned out the bank vault and gave the gunmen a duffel bag containing $360,000. This week, we share Rachel's interview with Breea Rosas! Breea is a school psychologist who works with educators on how they can implement neurodiversity affirming practices and neurodiversity affirming psychoeducation! Brandi starts us off with a gut-wrenching story. On the evening of November 3, 1998, all eight-year-old Maddie Clifton wanted to do was go outside and play. Her mother gave her permission to go outside for a few minutes, so Maddie went next door to the home of 14-year-old Josh Phillips to ask if he'd like to play baseball. He did. Later, when Maddie didn't come home, her parents panicked. Police and volunteers searched for Maddie for days before she was finally discovered by Josh's mother. Then Kristin tells us about an elaborate triple kidnapping. Michelle Renee was at home with her seven-year-old daughter, Breea, when, seemingly out of nowhere, three men burst through the home's locked back door. The men wore ski masks. They brandished guns. They'd even brought spears. They told Michelle that they knew she worked for a local Bank of America. What goes around, comes back around!   This harrowing experience of being kidnapped and held hostage, along with her then 7-year-old daughter and being forced to rob a bank became international headline news. Scenograf Marko Japelj je v več kot 30-letni karieri oblikoval prek 300 scenografij za dramske, operne, baletne in plesne predstave v sodelovanju s priznanimi režiserji in koreografi kot so Janusc Kica, Vinko Moderndorfer, Diego de Breea, Edward Clug, Valentina Turcu, Carmina Šilec, Matjaž Farič, Mateja Koležnik. Marko Japelj pravi: » Svoje delo imam zelo rad, uživam v njem, veliko delam in pri ustvarjanju ostajam zvest sebi, kar pomeni, da moram biti s svojim delom najprej zadovoljen sam«. Mariborčan Marko Japelj je uveljavljen scenograf tudi v mednarodnem prostoru. Ustvarja v uglednih gledaliških hišah v Evropi in v Rusiji, največ pa v Nemčiji, na Dunaju, tudi v Zurichu, Rigi, Bratislavi, Zagrebu, Reki, Beogradu. Dr. Breea Willingham joins the Beyond Prisons podcast to discuss her prison research, her writing workshops with incarcerated women, and her experiences as someone with family directly impacted by the system. Dr. Willingham talks about how her experiences inform her work despite the traditional resistance of the academy to approaches that are not considered "objective"—even if it is highly relevant to the research. We talk about the farce of objectivity in both academia and journalism, and the need to put forward the perspective of people directly impacted by a particular subject. We also examine Dr. Willingham's work regarding writing programs for incarcerated women. She talks about her research, in which educated, white, middle and upper-middle class women instructors were forced to negotiate their race and class privilege in their workshops, and their reactions upon finding that their students were human beings, too. We also touch on how some activism and scholarship approaches incarceration voyeuristically, treating other people's misery as a curiosity or source of inspiration. She discusses how writing workshops are liberating for incarcerated women and provide a way for them to resist their confinement, providing one of the few therapeutic opportunities for women to share and work through the trauma that so often paves their paths to prison. Dr. Breea Willingham is an Assistant Professor of Criminal Justice at Plattsburgh State University of New York. She worked as a newspaper reporter covering crime and education for 10 years before entering academia. Dr. Willingham's research areas/interests include: Black women’s prison writings, higher education in prison, Black women and police violence, the impact of incarceration on Black families and children, and women in the criminal justice system. She is currently writing a book about teaching and writing in women’s prisons.
