Toscano Cigars is always one of our favorite booths to visit at the Premium Cigar Association (PCA) Trade Show, and 2025 was no exception. It's not just about seeing what's new, but with Toscano, you get a piece of Italy and, in particular, Italian cigar making. Brand Ambassador Michael Cappellini has a wealth of information, and he reminded us that Toscano has been around for a long time. In fact, Toscano produced cigars through two World Wars - an amazing feat in itself. As in the past, Toscano took a cigar roller to the show. This allowed visitors to see the unique process of making a Toscano cigar, which differs from other companies. Cappellini said this is a snapshot of what occurs in their Lucca, Italy, factory. Of course, Toscano had something new to show - the fifth installment of the Master Aged series. Full PCA Report: https://wp.me/p6h1n1-wro

1940, Seconda guerra mondiale.

Industrial designer Stephen Burks career started in the early 2000s, when he became one of the first Americans to design furniture for European powerhouses like Roche Bobois, Moroso and Cappellini. Over the past two decades, he's become one of industrial design's most notable figures, creating collections for top brands and working with artisans around the world. This week WGSN Editorial Director Bethan Ryder is joined by Reiko Morrison WGSN's Head of CMF and Benjamin Hubert, founder of the London-based industrial design agency Layer Design. Layer recently launched a monograph, published by Phaidon, during the London Design Festival which coincided with an exhibition which ran as part of the inaugural Material Matters fair. The book covers the various stages of Benjamin Hubert's career and the many products he's designed for the likes of Bang & Olufsen, Vitra, Moroso, Cappellini, Muuto and more. Hubert had a design career in his sights while still at school and initially wanted to design cars, but went into product design instead and has designed a huge range of products from lighting to tech, and it's tech in particular where Layer Design excels at creating incredibly tactile products though a combination of materials. The three discuss how they see the future of Consumer tech evolving with less screens and a rich sense of materiality and haptic happiness.

On this episode we welcome back Michael Cappellini of Toscano cigars to the show to host a virtual pairing episode with all of us. The first pairing is a Toscano Garibaldi with the "Godfather" drink - equal parts half and half of bourbon and amaretto. Michael then walks us through a few different methods of combining the two - ending with a smoke out of the drink with your cigar smoke which we HIGHLY recommend. The second pairing was a Stillnovo with a Negroni and an Aperol Spritz. Again, the same methods used and it really brings out the flavor in both the cigar and the alcohol in their own ways. In the news we discussed some of the CRA's recent behavior and how it should be cleaned up for a brighter future. You can read that story here - https://www.smokintabacco.com/blog-posts/how-the-cigar-rights-of-america-continues-to-fail-to-impress We will be doing another pairing episode soon with Michael again so stay tuned for that info. House Guest by Country & Town House | Interior Designer Interviews
Welcome to episode 158 of the House Guest podcast, where Country & Town House Magazine's Interiors Editor Carole Annett chats with experts from the world of interior design and decoration. My House Guest this week is Tom Dixon, known as a restless innovator who rose to prominence in the mid-1980s as a maverick, untrained designer with a line in welded salvage furniture. While working with the Italian giant Cappellini he designed the widely acclaimed ‘S' Chair and Creative Director at Habitat rejuvenating the brand while maintaining Terence Conran's vision of enriching everyday life through simple, modern design. In 2007, he launched Design Research Studio, a design and innovations agency at the heart of Tom Dixon, now based at Coal Office in London's King's Cross, which operates as an office, shop, workshop and restaurant all under one roof. We chat about his love of making things, which includes food, hence his collaboration with chef Assaf Granit - Coal Office is their food and design playground, rich in material, style and flavour. He also has a wry take on his early designs: ‘After 20 years in the business, I still feel young and there's a lot to do, it's both fabulous and depressing that my stuff is now being sold in antique shops and occasionally a car boot sale'. Tune in for more.

Nipa Doshi and Jonathan Levien founded their eponymous design studio, Doshi Levien, in 2000. The duo, who are also real life partners and met while studying at London's Royal College of Art in the late '90s, came to prominence in 2003 with an extraordinary range of cookware, designed for French company, Tefal. At the time, the pieces seemed different and more than a little exciting, a combination of contemporary European design and thinking from somewhere else entirely. In terms of form, each item was incredibly precise. However, flip the pots and pans over and, on the base, was an unexpectedly beautiful pattern. Since then, the pair have gone on to work for the likes of Moroso, Hay, Kvadrat, BD Barcelona, galerie kreo, Cappellini and many others, creating textiles, furniture, glassware, shoes, lighting, and even ice cream, that deftly combines their contrasting skills, ideas and backgrounds. In this episode we talk about Nipa's relationship with colour and textiles; why card is a vital part of Jonathan's process; growing up in India and Scotland respectively and how that affected their design thinking; living and designing together; facing prejudice; that initial project with Tefal; and working with Italian furniture giant Moroso.Yet, mostly it's about how two people with different hinterland have come together to create a single vision.Support the show (https://www.patreon.com/materialmatters?fan_landing=true)
