Happy Tuesday, everyone! Lake Bell and I are kind of the same person. You'll hear all about in the episode, but the similarities are WILD. I loved this conversation with Lake-- we nerd out about our favorite cars, we talk about how we've both voiced Poison Ivy and we really bond over our kids' health struggles. Lake is insanely smart and talented and I really admire her so much. She has taken what she learned from her daughter about epilepsy and turned it into a beautiful book called All About Brains. I loved hearing her talk about the book and how it's designed to help kids across the neurodiversity spectrum feel like they have language to talk about their experience. Lake's also a fabulous actor and you may have seen her as Dr. Graham in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, Dr. Cat Black on Children's Hospital (Jeph's Favorite) or in ...In A World, which she also wrote and directed. Stick around for the Hindsight after the interview, where Jeph and I talk about some upcoming convention dates and respond to Fan Questions from the Mail Sack! The one and only Kelly Link zooms into the Damn Library hypserspace to talk her spectacular new collection, White Cat, Black Dog. She gets into how the new collection got its footing in fairy tales, how she loves ghost stories but has never seen a ghost (and that's okay), and discuss the magic of David Macaulay's Motel of the Mysteries. She brought along Megan Giddings' incredible The Women Could Fly, and we discuss how real its magic feels, and how books get tied to the place you read them. contribute! https://patreon.com/smdb for drink recipes, book lists, and more, visit: somanydamnbooks.com music: Disaster Magic (https://soundcloud.com/disaster-magic) Learn more about your ad choices. Kelly Link is the author of four previous story collections including Get in Trouble, which was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize (a link to her interview with Marrie about that book can be found here). Her short stories have been widely published in literary magazines including The Best American Short Stories and Prize Stories: The O. Henry Awards. She is a 2018 MacArthur Fellow and has received a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts. She's also the co-founder of Small Beer Press and co-edits the occasional zine Lady Churchill's Rosebud Wristlet. Kelly joins Marrie to talk about her latest collection, White Cat, Black Dog, out later this month and published by Random House. They talk about the role of fairy tales, Scottish ballads, and 17th century French lore in her work. Kelly walks through the evolution of several stories, the ways some of them surprised her, and how her illustrator was able to communicate something about one story that Kelly was not willing to include. Kelly talks about the Joy Williams' list of 8 essential things every story needs and much more. For more information on Writers on Writing and additional writing tips, visit our Patreon page. That Blind Tech Show is back in the saddle and no, not riding a guide dog as Brian is quite confused about drive-throughs and kiosk. Screen Reader access may be coming to a restaurant near you according to the work being done by Visaro and the Jaws team. Is Brian using Seeing AI or is the CIA looking for Brian? And who did fall off that ladder? Is Facebook still crashing for VoiceOver users and how about jumping into an Uber with wings? No, angels are not using them, yet, but Hyunda wants to get you airborne and using the Uber Air-Taxi service by 2023. Ambitious? Hmm, we will have to see. Um, no pun intended. What is in your daily meal? Jeff is Juicing and Brian is doing the NutraSystem plan, while Serina is just fasting away now and then staying perfect as she believes she is. Yes, Serina is… Oh wait, Serina Williams just won her first title in 3 years and I guess the big question is, “Hey Gilbert, what have you done lately?” Don’t eat your Air Pods! Please don’t do that. Silly kiddo, pods are not to be inserted there! No nutritional value in this Apple product. Do you sit at the computer all day? Want to stretch those legs? Then Jeff brings us the news from a Husky product he found at Home Depot. An adjustable desk! By the way, are you signing in with the same passwords and user-names all across the board? Stop that! Right now! Change it up and the best password is the one you don’t even know! Get that 2 Factor Varification going and rest assured your privacy and security is doing the best job it can do for you. "Black Panther" is probably the most anticipated Marvel superhero movie in years. And given how popular Marvel movies are that's no mean feat. So we brought Mike Sargent along to tell us all about it and what it means to the culture at large. Is it worth the hype. Then we look at the latest Netflix historical epic "Babylon Berlin" which shows us Germany inbetween world wars. And speaking of TV Bill McCuddy tells us about "Counterpart" which stars Oscar winner and insurance pitchman J.K Simmons. Neil teases us a bit about the second season of "A Handmaid's Tale" and tells us about the DVD release of "Wonder." Listen in!
