A single barroom question—will the terror ever stop—can change how you see duty, faith, and the meaning of peace. We open with prayer and a grateful nod to everyone holding families, churches, and towns together, then step into a hard conversation about violence, vigilance, and what actually protects ordinary people. The tension is real, so we turn to Scripture for a truer compass: Proverbs on faithful marriage, Matthew 4 on repentance and calling, and Psalm 4 on quieting anger and trusting God for peace that outlasts harvests and headlines.History gives the ideas flesh. We read the Medal of Honor citation for Staff Sergeant William J. Bordelon at Tarawa, where courage looked like wet sand, pillboxes, and a choice to go again under fire. That story reframes our comfort and reminds us that security has names and graves. We pair it with FDR's 1936 Christmas messages, weaving Dickens' transformation with the Sermon on the Mount. The claim lands with weight: policies matter, but a nation cannot claim to seek peace while ignoring Christ's commands. Repentance, mercy, and fidelity are not soft words; they are the spine that holds a people upright when fear and rage press in.Across the hour, we ask you to test convictions against Scripture, to thank those who serve, and to build homes that hold firm in rough weather. We offer a family-friendly book recommendation for readers who love Narnia and Percy Jackson, and we invite you to support the show if it's been useful to you. Most of all, we point to the light that still breaks into dark places. Share the gospel. Care for the cold, hungry, and afraid. Pray the Lord's Prayer like it is daily bread, and live as if peace on earth begins at your table. If this conversation challenged you or gave you hope, subscribe, share it with a friend, and leave a rating or review so more people can find it. Step into the magic of midwinter with this rich, sensory, feminine storytelling episode. If you're craving grounding, comfort, spiritual depth, and a deeper connection to the season, this episode will feel like a warm light in the dark.Ep 21 S3 Midwinter Magic weaves together four atmospheric winter tales inspired by Celtic mythology, Czech traditions, Devon folklore, and the quiet intuition of modern women. Inside this episode, you'll experience:• A young winter witch in the Scottish Highlands, snowed in on her journey to a solstice initiation, meeting the presence of the winter goddess Cailleach in a moment that becomes her true rite of passage.• A Bohemian mountain cottage in the 19th century, where three generations of women prepare for Christmas Eve with old Czech rituals like apple cutting, St Barbara's branches, walnut boats, juniper smoke and lead-pouring prophecies.• A Devon village holding ancient winter traditions, from the burning of the Yule Log to the joyful Wassail procession blessing the orchards for abundance and protection.• A modern woman guided by a recurring lantern dream, leading her to uncover the legend of Saint Lucia and reconnect with her intuition during the coldest, quietest nights of the year. This is the perfect winter companion for cosy evenings, winter walks, gift-wrapping, or moments when you want to feel held, nourished and connected to something deeper.Claim Your Free Hypnosis Recording: "Crowned in Confidence"
In this episode of Light of the Way, Ashley opens the month of December with the first real breath after Mercury retrograde. She shares how the snow, the winter sky, and the green ocean trail revealed a new clarity — the kind that arrives only when you stop resisting the season of life that you're in. She speaks about the dark time of year and why aligning with it matters: waking with the sun, slowing down, resting more, going outside, honouring the natural rhythm instead of fighting it. This season isn't meant to be productive; it's meant to soften you open. From there, Ashley shares a miracle that happened in the apple aisle at Whole Foods, and another moment of recognition that followed. These moments brought her into a full understanding that there is no shame in anything we walk through. Everything is unfolding exactly as it should. Finally, she shares what's happening inside A Line Within this month, including the December 20th ceremony, and the inspiring energy she's feeling now that she's broken the glass ceiling she unknowingly placed upon herself. This episode is an opening — to life, to miracles, to winter, and to the truth of why we are here. * * * * * * * * * * * * The GUIDED Membership: Everyday Support for Your Awakening — workshops, live satsang, tools and community all in one place. Dina, Joey and myself complete our review of Dark. Season 3. Do you agree with our conclusions?
Description: In this heartfelt episode, Jen and Amy welcome friends, Justin McRoberts and Scott Erickson, to delve into the tender complexities of depression, creativity, and faith. Together, Scott and Justin have built a body of work around the intersection of art, prayer, and healing, including their newest project: In the Low: A Prayerbook for the Seasons of Depression. Today they share personal stories and insights on how art and spirituality can serve as companions through life's most isolating lows. This episode offers a compassionate perspective on navigating mental health challenges and finding hope in unexpected places. If you've ever found yourself in a season that was super dark or unbearably heavy, this conversation will bring you comfort. Thought-provoking Quotes: “When depression eventually would lift in my life, I noticed that I'd think, ‘Where did this fruit come from? Where did this treasure come from?' It came through going through this process. You might feel void of it when you're in it, you're just trying to get through it or be in it or be functional every day. But there is something happening.” – Scott Erickson “What are the comforting words I need for today? How can my conscious mind provide something for my subconscious and my soul? How can my conscious mind provide some handles for me for this day, for this week, for this moment?” – Justin McRoberts “Your disappointment in the religious systems you've been a part of is a gift and those systems need it. There's something really institutionally beautiful and necessary to whole swaths, thousands and thousands of people sharing the same set of disappointments. Follow that thread.” – Scott Erickson “You aren't wrong to feel the things you are feeling. Life is hard. The machinery is beating the snot out of you. Stay. Please stay long enough to see what might be down there and learn to breathe. My hope is not that you rise to the surface, though I do hope that. My hope is that you learn to breathe at this depth.” – Justin McRoberts Resources Mentioned in This Episode: 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline - https://988lifeline.org/ Nichole Nordeman - https://www.instagram.com/nicholenordeman Prayer: Forty Days of Practice by Scott Erickson and Justin McRoberts - https://amzn.to/4hDMVsM May It Be So: Forty Days with the Lord's Prayer by Scott Erickson and Justin McRoberts - https://amzn.to/3WsKFL5 Honest Advent: Awakening to the Wonder of God-with-Us Then, Here, and Now by Scott Erickson - https://amzn.to/3LeVIFc In the Low: Honest Prayers for Dark Season by Scott Erickson and Justin McRoberts - https://amzn.to/3LaIB87 Lost Connections: Uncovering the Real Causes of Depression - and the Unexpected Solutions by Johann Hari - https://amzn.to/4nsvrAR Matt Haig - https://amzn.to/4o7CTlV Scott Erickson Paints an Honest Picture of an Advent Season of Hope - https://jenhatmaker.com/podcasts/series-64/scott-erickson-paints-an-honest-picture-of-an-advent-season-of-hope/ To learn more about listener data and our privacy practices visit: https://www.audacyinc.com/privacy-policy Learn more about your ad choices. November isn't just Thanksgiving month. It's also Men's Mental Health Month — a time to shed light on the silent struggles many men face. Especially our veterans, soldiers, and first responders — men who've seen things most of us can't imagine, and who often carry that pain alone.Today's episode is called “Finding Light in your Dark Season”, and we're talking about why so many men — particularly those who've served — find themselves in a dark or “death” season mentally and emotionally… and how faith, Scripture, and community can lead them back into light.

We're back. But it's not clear when. It's season 2 of Dark and we're untangling the triquenta knot over at least 5 time zones and parellel stories. Between the three of us, maybe we got it right.
I was requested to weigh in on the show "Dark". The problem was, I hadn't watched it. The lesser problem was I didn't want to do a solo show on a three season show. So, one of the suggesters was recruited and he, in turn, recruited another. Thus, three Lynbrook, NY public school kids - now AARP members - reunited for the first time to review the German mystery box show "Dark",Note: There are spoilers. Constantly. Like every aspect will be spoiled. We might not be right, but we are revealing everything as we understood the show. This limited series is aiming to cover 1 season per podcast episode. 1 for 1 so far. This is season 1.Your intrepid host is yours truly. And our guests are returning guest and artist, DIna Levy. Also known as the person called before me in attendance for like 10 years. Also, we are joined by loyal listener, musician. and semi retired smart guy, Joey Restivo. His credits include actually visiting me once in Baltimore. The outro music is courtesy of Pre War Yardsale.
Throughout this entire recap episode, the genius of Paul Davis, his music and his hair come shining through. When not discussing Mr. Davis, Beave and Len discuss the results of the Billy Squier/Eddie Money Facebook bracket, as well as discuss the Guardians, Cubs, and White Sox (WOULD THE BREWERS PLEASE LOSE A GAME?!??). Plus we discuss the Chicago Sky, the Golden State Valkyries, and the rest of the WNBA. Beave recommends "Vegas: A Memoir of a Dark Season" by John Gregory Dunne. Len recommends "Stranger Things" star Finn Wolfhard's new album, called "Happy Birthday". Plus Recently Discovered Top 40 Songs, the New Yorker, and a Len/Beave argument about Moby's "Play". Tune in!

Welcome back listeners and today we welcome Jacqueline Suskin for today's conversation centered on her latest book, The Verse for Now. Its theme is embracing our planetary identity while acknowledging our intimate, vulnerable human side amid the climate crisis.Jacqueline's Website @jsuskin on Instagram Jacqueline's Facebook page Book order page: https://www.flowerflowerpress.press/shop/the-verse-for-nowHere is an outline of the conversation:Evolution of Creative Cycles:"Jacqueline, welcome back to the show! In our January conversation about A Year in Practice, you emphasized the cyclical nature of creativity and the reflective power of winter. With The Verse for Now, you delve into the idea of accepting ourselves as both vast and intimate—planetary yet personal. Can you share what inspired this shift and how your approach to creativity has evolved since then?"Nature as a Muse:"Your latest work invites us to find guidance in moments of contemplation: kneeling by a rushing creek, walking city streets, or sitting under an old growth redwood. Could you describe a personal moment from your creative journey when nature transformed into a profound source of poetic inspiration?"Spontaneity vs. Craft:"Given your impressive portfolio of over forty thousand improvisational poems through Poem Store, how do you balance the spontaneity of in-the-moment creation with the intentional craft required for a cohesive work like The Verse for Now? What role does each play in your creative process?"Teaching & Community Impact:"As a teaching artist with InsideOut Literary Arts and the mind behind the Poem Forest curriculum, how does engaging with communities and young creators influence your own writing? In what ways do these experiences inform the themes of interconnection and transformation in your latest book?"Message for Challenging Times:"In a world marked by environmental challenges and rapid change, The Verse for Now speaks to finding solace and agency through poetry. What message or practical guidance would you like to share with our listeners who are seeking to nurture their creativity and connection to the earth during tumultuous times?"A special thanks to our sponsor, White Cloud Coffee Roasters. When we last listened to season three of “In the Dark,” Madeleine Baran had collected signatures from the families of the Haditha victims, hoping to obtain secret photographs of the massacre. In the final episodes of the season, the team gives the pictures to an analyst who says the images are clear evidence of a war crime. Military prosecutors eventually charged eight Marines for killing two dozen unarmed Iraqi men, women and children. But a cascade of immunity offers, intervention by commanding officers, and a generous plea bargain meant no one was held accountable for the murders in any meaningful way.The final episodes of “In the Dark” season three probes what went wrong with the prosecution of the infantrymen who rounded up and slaughtered civilians in retaliation for an IED attack. And while the number of victims in Haditha have been listed as 24, Baran and her team find evidence the number is too low.OUR SPOILER-FREE REVIEWS OF "IN THE DARK" EPISODES 6 THROUGH 9 BEGIN IN THE FINAL 11 MINUTES OF THE EPISODE. An Iraqi lawyer reaches out to an American investigative journalist about a massacre that killed family members and others in his hometown. In 2005, after an IED attack on their convoy, US Marines stormed a village and executed 24 men, women, and children. The servicemen claimed they were returning fire from insurgents, but the evidence collected - including secret photographs - suggested a war crime was committed. Despite international condemnation of the Haditha massacre, none of the Marines served time for the killings. Two decades later, Madeleine Baron asks the question “why not?”Season three of the two-time Peabody Award winning podcast “In The Dark” from The New Yorker digs into the arcane world of the military justice system. The nine-part series is the result of four years of investigation, hundreds of interviews, and thousands of unreleased documents. Along the way, they uncover new details about that day in Haditha, the Marine Corps's efforts to minimize it, and why no one involved in the biggest American war crime since Vietnam was ever punished.OUR SPOILER-FREE REVIEW OF EPISODES 1-5 OF "IN THE DARK" BEGIN IN THE FINAL 13 MINUTES OF THIS EPISODE.In Crime of the Week: who can it be now?
