It's Blu-ray time again on the podcast. Erik Childress and Sergio Mims concentrate on just a few studios but a lot of titles including films from a silent film comedian. Sergio goes over some recent musicals released by Warner Archive as well as an Errol Flynn war film. If you ever wanted to see Strother Martin in a horror film, Arrow Video has one for you along with a couple of new 4K titles. One from Dario Argento is there for your Halloween viewing and the other is there to re-evaluate David Lynch's version of the adaptation being hyperbolized to a fault. Is the 1984 Dune as bad as its reputation or does a new sheen make its visuals as impressive as people believe the 2021 version to be? 0:00 - Intro 3:30 – Undercrank (Edward Everett Horton 8 Silent Comedies) 9:10 – Arrow (The Brotherhood of Satan, The Cat O Nine Tails, Dune) 55:08 – Warner Bros. CW: hate speech/language On this episode...I revisit "The Hate Project" episode 31 which originally aired on July 15, 2013. Most of this episode was me discussing the acquittal of George Zimmerman for the murder of Trayvon Martin. Also discussion of current topics including the dehumanizing and torturous polices of the U.S. in regards to migrant children and families, the Marshae Jones case, Portland fascist and antifascist conflict, and Police and Border Patrol Agents posting racist hateful content. I Talk about George Zimmerman being acquitted for the murder of Trayvon Martin, also discussion of Marissa Alexander case, Bernard Goetz, and general interacting with trolls in chat.*51:54 - A troll in the chat is lobbing racially charged yet homoerotic statements at me. I ask this guy why he buys into the stereotypes of black people being violent, asking if a black person has ever committed violence towards him. *57:20 – someone in chat room threatens “race war” and I pose the same question from the earlier episodes – if there was a race war and everyone was armed equally – who would win? *1:06:00 - Discussion of Zimmerman being half-latino, and I talk about Latinos and Asians who I grew up around in TX, who tried to assimilate especially if they could pass for white. If accepted, they do the bidding of white supremacy. *1:11:36 – I refute a troll who says “America is only for whites”, I’m accused of being a jew. More homophobic yet homoerotic trash talk *1:22:22 – I explain why I don’t believe white guilt from liberal whites is good for anyone, discussion of Jordan Davis case, Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson *1:37:14 - Discussion of black men who saved white girls - Tamar Boggs and Charles Ramsey. I describe eating a meal in “The Old Mill” a former Union sympathetic site in Tennessee. *2:05:23 - “Guest 20” calls in. He defends George Zimmerman, makes same arguments that trolls made. Dragon pushes back on him as well. I bring up Marissa Alexander again. -He doesn’t want to reveal if he’s part of a movement, but says KiGY to Dragon: https://www.adl.org/education/references/hate-symbols/kigy-I bring up the lessons of Ice Cube’s “Friday” in regards to a fight. *2:28:48 – I ask “Guest 20” why he’s a racist and try interrogate why he says the N-word. He believes race is scientific and genetic and more than a social construct.-He mentions the book “The Bell Curve” as influencing him, wrongly credits black conservative Thomas Sowell as the author.*2:27:38 - “Guest 20” asks me my personal definition of racist, I answer. Dragon admits he fits my definition. -Dragon then gets racist about Trayvon and George Zimmerman – says 50 years ago this would have never been an issue-Guest 20 reveals he is Christian Identity: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Christian_Identity-Guest 20 and I debate the Bible and the peacefulness of Jesus – he and Dragon argue that Christians are meant to only love other (white) Christians-Guest 20 shares “Cat O’ Nine Tails” story in the Temple, makes me question Jesus’s peacefulness. -I challenge the “Blood in the Face” ideology by explaining Asian flush.*2:48:00 - Regular African-American Sports Host caller NajRadio calls in. He weighs in on Zimmerman trial. I comment on stupidity of white liberals saying “I am Trayvon” *3:02:08 - Neo-nazi McBride calls in. The cat o’ nine tails is a whip with nine “claws”, knotted thongs of cotton cord, designed to lacerate the skin in parallel wounds. It was used for corporal punishment, for example in the Royal Navy, where flogging was regularly administered for drunkenness or striking an officer. These offenses could give you a dozen lashes whereas desertion, mutiny or theft could give you up to five hundred. In the case of the “offense” of sodomy the death penalty was normally administered, but an alternative to this was awarding one thousand lashes – something that carried a similar chance of survival. “Flogging around the fleet” was the severest form of flogging where the offender was rowed between the ships in port, being flogged at each ship. This continued over months and years until the sailor died. After having endured each round of punishment the sailor’s back was rinsed with seawater which was then mistakenly thought to help reduce the risk of infection. The expression “rubbing salt into his wounds” is said to come from this practice. We talk all things RHONY, which includes our Countess being sued, Southern Charm (our #2 fav show!)...and a real life life-lesson Darnell learned the hard way (listen all the way to the end!).
Breaking Your Heart (Pixar Style) We open this week's show with one of the most unexpected recommendation sections before throwing ourselves into Pixar's newest film - "Coco". We're not crying as we type this, shut up, you are! Sniff Who put all that dust in here? After that eye-watering beginning we launch into Off the Shelf with a trio of films. Aidan looks at Indicator's release of "The Border" - starring Jack Nicholson at the peak of his powers. Meanwhile, Rob gets confused about whether Jia Zhangke's "24 City" is a documentary or not and Ryan gets down and dirty with Giallo Classic "Cat O' Nine Tails". Oh, and please don't say the words "remember me" to Rob. It's too soon for him. Until next time, keep it Eclectica. Before diving into Argento, Bava, Fulci, and all the other Italian horror staples, our hosts reminisce on a weekend full of Ween, Brett passionately defends the JUMP STREET series, and the fully Go-Pro'd action flick HARDCORE HENRY is dissected. Kiyan eventually takes the reins as giallo classics are discussed, most notably DEEP RED, SUSPIRIA, INFERNO, PHENOMENA and TENEBRE.
