As horror fans, it's hard enough trying to keep up with all the movies—let alone the memorabilia and collectibles—but just imagine having to live with one of us!  In this episode, we've invited our wives onto the show to share their perspectives—not just on living with a slightly obsessive fan, but on how they've come to embrace the genre themselves. You'll hear how they became fans in their own right, and what kinds of films still give them the shivers. As you'll learn, being a horror fan has evolved into a shared experience—a communal passion that binds us together. While we might not all love the same titles, we all agree on one thing: this genre rules. We welcome Kat AuBuchon, Jenn Glonek, and Dawn Kitley as they join us to help Discover the Horror! Films Mentioned in this episode: August Underground (2001), August Underground's Mordum (2003), Cannibal Ferox (1981), Carcinoma (2014), Deadly Games aka Dial Code Santa Clause (1989), Demoniacs (1974), The Descent (2005), Flesh for Frankenstein (1973), Four Flies on Grey Velvet (1971), Frankenstein (1931), Friday the 13th (1980), Funny Games (1997), The Godfather (1972), Gods of the Deep (2023), Godzilla (1954), Halloween (1978), Halloween II (1981),  Halloween V: The Revenge of Michael Myers (1989), Halloween: The Curse of Michael Myers (1995), Hard Ticket to Hawaii (1987), High Tension (2003), Hostel (2005), Human Centipede (First Sequence) (2009), Inside (2007), Longlegs (2024), Mandy (2018), Nekromantik (1988), A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984), Psycho (1960), Oddity (2024), One Missed Call (2008), Rambo: First Blood Part II (1985), The Redsin Tower (2006), The Rule of Jenny Penn (2025), Salo, or the 120 Days of Sodom (1975), Scream (1996), A Serbian Film (2010), Session 9 (2001), Sleepaway Camp (1983), Society (1989), Sting of Death (1966), The Substance (2024), The Taking of Deborah Logan (2014), Terrifier (2016), Terror Firmer (1999), The Texas Chain Saw Massacre (1974), The Thing (1982), Three on a Meathook (1972), Tromeo and Juliet (1996), Two Evil Eyes (1990), Without Warning (1980), Z.A.A.T.

Donald Macleod explores the life and music of Ennio MorriconeEnnio Morricone is cited as one of the most experimental and influential composers of all time, undoubtedly recognised as one of the world's greatest ever composers of music for film. A legendary figure who over the course of his career won numerous awards, and accolades, his innovative soundworlds helped to define what film music could be for multiple genres of cinema. Morricone's music extended far beyond the desert landscapes of Spaghetti Westerns, not just to other genres on the Silver Screen, but also into the worlds of pop music, and into the concert hall – where his study and composition of avant garde music gave him the techniques to experiment within his scores for film as well. Over the course of this week, following on the heels of the 2024 Academy Awards, Donald Macleod explores the incredible career of Ennio Morricone, a composer who quite astoundingly wrote over 500 scores for film and television, as well as over 100 classical works.Music Featured:Invenzione The Ecstasy of Gold from The Good, The Bad and The Ugly Party Prohibito from I malamondo Musica per undici violini Eduardo di Capua and Alfredo Mazzucchi: O sole mio (arr. Back in ancient times, before Netflix and Amazon Prime, before Hulu and YouTube, even before DVDs and Blu-rays, if films weren't available to you from either your local video stores, or if you wanted to see an uncut print of a movie, or even one that wasn't released on VHS, the place you could find them would be in fuzzy gray market of the bootlegs. These types of vendors were a staple to a lot of the early movie conventions, where fans could find titles that never even knew were out there.  Some of us are old enough to remember being able to finally see the uncut full letterboxed version of Lucio Fulci's The Beyond, after years of suffering though only being able to see the heavily edited Seven Doors of Death. As your collection grew, you would usually start trading with others, increasing your collection even more, as well as helping to spread the love and passion of these amazing films. This is what we're discussing in this episode, so sit back and either reminisce with us, or learn about the good old days, when we were happy for a 5th generation grainy print of Anthropophagus that had the infamous fetus scene! “Bad luck isn't brought by broken mirrors, but by broken minds.” This is it: our mammoth exploration of the work of Italian aesthete Dario Argento. Hosts Christopher Funderburg and John Cribbs are joined by filmmaker and illustrator Patrick Horvath to explore the career of one of horror cinema's most notorious and beloved artists. They cover it all, from the brilliant beginnings of the "animal trilogy" of The Bird with Crystal Plumage, Cat O' Nine Tails and Four Flies on Grey Velvet to the some of the highest points in the history of horror cinema with Suspiria and Deep Red all the way through to the bitter end. They pair each of the films from Argento's golden era with a film from the more dispiriting later portion of the filmmaker's career in order to explore the continuity of his themes and artistic ideas. They look in-depth at the classics like Opera and Inferno while keeping their eyes open for silver linings such as his two Masters of Horror entries and his "Max von Sydow teams up with a parrot to solve mysteries" late-giallo Sleepless. It's here, the most comprehensive podcast study of one of the artists who defined the genre. We're almost through ARGENTOBER (and this edition of HARD PIVOT) and today we're discussing the 1971 Giallo (and possibly dark comedy?) FOUR FLIES ON GREY VELVET! A movie whose rights are so complex you can only watch it on Plex. Not to mention it goes in and out of English dub to Italian in the last 10 minutes. Whatever, still watchable! We discuss the shoehorned title into the reveal of the movie, grown men yelling "I don't want a bath!" and how Fran Lebowitz claims she's never seen a worse movie (c'mon, Fran!). The coats are clawing their way through their second giallo film from "The Master of the Thrill" aka "The Italian Hitchcock" aka "The Father of Fear". The one and only Dario Argento and his 1971 sophomore feature: "The Cat O' Nine Tails". Capitalizing on the success of his debut feature (The Bird with the Crystal Plumage), Argento quickly turned out his next film at the behest of the studios. He would go on to complete his animal trilogy with "Four Flies on Grey Velvet" in the same year. Often overshadowed by his later films, "Cat O' Nine Tails" has gained more praise in recent years as Dario's films get restored and reassessed. This week we continue a retrospective we call Dead Writers Writing with the 1970 film The Bird with the Crystal Plumage. The Bird with the Crystal Plumage (Italian: L'uccello dalle piume di cristallo) is a 1970 giallo film directed by Dario Argento, in his directorial debut. The film has been credited with popularizing the Italian giallo genre.[3] It is the first installment in the Animal Trilogy, and was followed by The Cat o' Nine Tails (1971) and Four Flies on Grey Velvet (1972).The film was nominated for an Edgar Allan Poe award for best motion picture in 1971. Upon its release the film was a huge box office hit, grossing 1,650,000,000 Italian lira (roughly about $1 million US), twice the production cost of $500,000. The film was also a success outside of Italy, gaining €1,366,884 admissions in Spain. This is Episode 322.Endorsements this week:Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee (on Netflix)Beyond Tomorrow (1940 fantasy film)All the Colors of Giallo (documentary)The Castle of Horror Podcast Book of Great HorrorMike McPadden's book box set, which bazillion Points is selling and for which all proceeds go to the late McPadden's familyA lookout for the upcoming audiobook of Night of the Book Man read by Leigh Fryling

"We recorded a podcast. We recorded a podcast for you. Oh, what a thing to do. And it was all Giallo…" This week Kyle, Matthew and Natalie sit down with Radtober alum and spooky movie aficionado Alex Jacobs to talk about the uniquely Italian horror movie genre: giallo. Beginning in the 1960s, Italian filmmakers inspired by pulp novels and murder mysteries created proto-slasher films known for their stylistic use of music, color and black-gloved killers (along with brunettes and rampant murders at boarding schools). The gang discusses giallo's grand tradition of insane titles. Kyle and Alex get nostalgic about the use of the snap zooms in movies. Plus, we learn about vintage Italian cinema's total disregard for audio recording. But it wouldn't be "This Is Rad!" if there weren't some solid tangents, including a loving tribute to the non-giallo but still Italian horror classic “Suspiria." A fun and informative chat that lovingly celebrates a cool, lesser known corner of the horror movie landscape.
