This is our 3rd year of Halloween content. Even to this day, we can't decide on what to call it. Is it "Spooky Penis Month"? Is it "Halloweiners"? It can probably be a combination of both. Either way, we're starting off our favourite season right with a film we're a little embarrassed to have not seen before. Yeah, it's Robert Hiltzik's cult classic SLEEPAWAY CAMP. I mean, we're glad we waited to cover this film as adults as it's easily one of the best horror films we've seen with an ending that honestly leaves you haunted but also, one of the most important scenes we've covered on this podcast. You honestly won't want to miss our commentary on this classic but if you have yet to see the film, please don't allow it to be spoiled for you. You have been warned!

For the last entry in our Camp series, we're finally tackling Robert Hiltzik's Sleepaway Camp (1983). Along for the short shorts and Judy of it all is returning guest - and big fan of the film - Ten Backe. The big question is whether this film is homophobic and transphobic. Hiltzik doesn't have a lot of thoughts on the matter, but we, and many trans film critics, do. Is Sleepaway Camp worthy of praise and (re)appropriation by the queer community?Plus: comparisons to Friday the 13th, thoughts on Judy's curling iron death, Art the pedophile cook, and the need for short shorts and male nudity!References:-Ten Backe. Joey Gabe and Chris talk... Sleepaway Camp (released as Nightmare Vacation in the United Kingdom) a 1983 American slasher film written and directed by Robert Hiltzik,[6] who also served as executive producer. It is the first film in the Sleepaway Camp film series, and tells the story of a young girl sent to a summer camp that becomes the site of a series of murders shortly after her arrival. It stars Felissa Rose, Katherine Kamhi, Paul DeAngelo, Mike Kellin (in his last screen appearance), and Christopher Collet (in his first). Released during the heyday of slasher movies, the film is known for its infamous twist ending,[7] considered to be one of the genre's most shocking. Since its release, the film received a positive critical response and a cult following. It was followed by three sequels, Sleepaway Camp II: Unhappy Campers (1988), Sleepaway Camp III: Teenage Wasteland (1989), and Return to Sleepaway Camp (2008).

For about 95% of its runtime, this 80’s slasher flick operates as an oddly bloodless, weirdly sexless, and overall kind of annoying ripoff of "Friday the 13th". Writer and director Robert Hiltzik mines little tension from his story of a youth summer camp besieged by a killer dumping boiling water on pervy camp cooks and stabbing counselors in the shower, "Psycho"-style. It's all very rote and by-the-bloody-books until the film's final minutes, when a last-second twist and some wonky special effects combine into one of the most disturbing images in horror movie history. So grab an extra flashlight and watch out of night snakes as Tim Williams and guest co-host, Charlie Cotter, go to Camp Arawak to discuss all things “Sleepaway Camp” from 1983 on this episode of the 80’s Flick Flashback. There is no additional trivia for this episode. Husband and wife comedians Mike Bobbitt and Allyson Bobbitt take turns making each other watch a movie the other has never seen. This week, they make their dear friend comedian/writer/podcaster Samantha Rager watch Sleepaway Camp. Robert Hiltzik's 1983 Sleepaway Camp is a movie that scarred Mike for decades when he saw it in the theater at 11 years old. He was already watching horror movies of the day and had a subscription to Fangoria, but there was something about seeing kids his own age get killed in a slasher flick and the twist ending that literally caused him nightmares for over 30 years until he revisited the movie as an adult. Now Sleepaway Camp has become a favorite to both him and his wife Allyson. Will Sam Rager find this as terrifying as a young Mike did, or will she appreciate the silliness of it like an adult Allyson does? Even if they movie's infamous ending doesn't cause a scare, the ending to this week's episode will come as quite a shock. The slasher film is one the biggest subgenres of horror films. But how did it come about and gain such popularity? This episode tracks the progression of (mostly) American slashers, focusing on how we got to the most formative years of the genre. ▶️Discussions include: How real-life influences and familiar settings were reflected in ‘60s and ‘70s films, thus inspiring the most popular slasher years; cementing slasher movie tropes; hooks, tonal changes, elevating intellectual and visual creativity as the years progressed; franchising; audience accessibility to slashers; recycling, resuscitation and reinvention of the genre, leading to the next evolutionary step to recapture the magic of the slasher movie trend. ▶️**PICKS OF THE WEEK** 1980s: “One heck of a final scene!” —Lindsay’s Pick, SLEEPAWAY CAMP (1983): A twisted summer camp story with a mysterious killer murdering foul-mouthed bullies. To kickstart August for Summer Camp Slasher Month, we decided to review the infamous, campy classic, Sleepaway Camp (1983) for Episode 16!!! We had a lot of fun discussing this cheesefest, as well as hard-hitting topics like: What exactly happened to director Robert Hiltzik as a child at summer camp to make this movie? Visiting filming locations and watching colorized versions of black & white cinema, then we find out where The King places this between Ernest Goes to Camp & Friday the 13th. Our thoughts on all-male, group skinny dipping, “Roid Out Ronnie,” and The Lord makes Shyamalan a verb.

A class B-Movie suggested by #1 listener, Stupid Josh! We attempt to understand the family dynamics of this film, as well as the strange reason you should never tell anyone Mother-Aunt Martha did your physical. Join us in talking uncomfortable Director Commentaries, the 80’s version of “Light as a feather, stiff as a board”, and how much we hate pervy white dudes. Miss Jaye is back at it with her biggest, boldest episode yet! She starts off by talking a little bit about the relaunch of the World of Champagne as well as the upcoming "sister site," LifeStyle By Janessa, which will include all of the great makeup content you expected in the Makeup Forum and dialing it up to 10! Then she sets up the interview by tackling the problem of transphobia in horror, specifically looking at the 3 horror movies most commonly cited as being transphobic: PSYCHO, SILENCE OF THE LAMBS, and SLEEPAWAY CAMP. Miss Jaye acknowledges that queer theory can sometimes forget about the real human beings that exist beneath the theory, and offers her commentary in the spirit of finding alternative - and potentially liberating - readings of the texts rather than to refute or minimize the voices of trans people who feel hurt by these portrayals. She goes deep into what SLEEPAWAY CAMP is presenting, and after engaging with a piece for Horror Society written by trans author Emma Alice Johnson she offers up a surprising reading of the film that posits a different worldview...and questions who might be the true villain of the piece. After the film analysis, Miss Jaye jumps into her supersized interview with icon and legendary scream queen Felissa Rose! Felissa originated the role of Angela Baker that was later played by Pamela Springsteen in two sequels (that are much more explicitly transphobic in tone) before returning for an unexpected role in RETURN TO SLEEPAWAY CAMP. The two discuss the film in depth: how Felissa got the part, what it was like working with director Robert Hiltzik, and how she feels that Angela came to do the things she did. They also talk about some of Felissa's other iconic roles in indie treasures like VICTOR CROWLEY and Tommy Faircloth's FAMILY POSSESSIONS (and his upcoming feature, A NUN'S CURSE). They also talk about fan culture and Felissa's favorite thing about traveling to conventions. After the interview, Miss Jaye shares the story of how she first met Felissa at Days of the Dead Indianapolis in 2016! This is Miss Jaye biggest - and we think best! - episode to date!
