One of these debates that resurfaces with every cycle is that of net neutrality. This is the basic idea that internet service providers have to be neutral about the way they provide access to different areas of the Internet. The company you pay to provide you with internet shouldn't restrict your access to websites based on their political alignment, for example. This is a principle on which most people agree, but the policies around it can be much more contentious. So what is going on with net neutrality now? And why does it matter? TikTok might soon be facing a choice: Divest from its Chinese Communist Party-controlled parent company, or cease to operate in the U.S. “This is not about the content that is being posted on TikTok,” Rep. August Pfluger, R-Texas, says. “It's about the conduct of the company that controls TikTok, that makes the decisions, that has a narrative that is able to use Chinese Communist Party propaganda through the platform, if they so choose.” ByteDance is TikTok's parent company. It's headquartered in Beijing and subject to Chinese law that requires companies to make data available to the CCP. The House is set to vote Wednesday on a bill designed to prevent foreign adversary-controlled applications from operating in the U.S. Some are referring to the Protecting Americans from Foreign Adversary Controlled Applications Act at the “TikTok bill,” since it would prevent TikTok from operating in the U.S. if the company does not break from ByteDance. The bill received bipartisan support in committee and is expected to pass the House. Pfluger joins “The Daily Signal Podcast” to explain why TikTok poses a national security threat to the U.S. and whether he thinks the bill will receive the same bipartisan support in the Senate. Following the conversation with Pfluger, Jake Denton, research associate in the Tech Policy Center at The Heritage Foundation, joins the show to explain how the app would effectively be banned in the U.S. if the bill does pass and TikTok refuses to divest from its CCP-controlled parent company. The White House is also making plans to send flights to the region to rescue Americans, as at least 14 remain unaccounted for. However, as the conflict between Hamas and Israel intensifies and innocent civilians continue to die, what else can the U.S. do to put a stop to this catastrophic violence? On the Rundown, Senator Dan Sullivan (R-AK) discusses how involved he believes the United States will get in this conflict and why ensuring Iran stays out of it is crucial to deter "a broadening" of this war across the Middle East. Artificial Intelligence (AI) is a hot topic of conversation across the globe right now but who is standing up to make sure that it's in the best interests of humans? In this week's Respect Life Radio, Deacon Geoff tackles the topic. "Think about artificial intelligence (AI) as social media on steroids - 10 times the impact that social media had on our society is what AI does. It will truly redefine the way that we live. There is nothing we can do at this point to go away from AI. It's arrived and it's here and we have to do everything we can to make sure it's in service of us and it doesn't do things that are against the best human interest for us," posits Jake Denton, Research Associate in the Tech Policy Center at the Heritage Foundation. "Ultimately, our regulators need to understand that and they need to be proactive. The question really becomes - who is going to be willing to do something about it?"  Follow The Heritage Foundation https://www.heritage.org for more information about the future of AI and big tech and follow Jake directly on Twitter at @RealJDenton

Today we're joined by Kara Frederick, director of the Tech Policy Center at the Heritage Foundation, to discuss Congress' recent TikTok hearings and the arguments for and against a nationwide TikTok ban. We discuss how much power China holds over TikTok as a company and what, ultimately, China could do with our data. We talk about how it's not just a concern when it comes to government data and why it's also dangerous for China to have YOUR specific data. We also look at a clip from the TikTok hearing in which TikTok CEO Shou Zi Chew cannot deny that the CCP is manipulating content on the app. But does China manipulate TikTok algorithms to push ideologies that weaken the U.S., while restricting those very same ideologies in its own country? We explain why it's naive to think the answer is no. We also talk about the RESTRICT Act, a bill proposed to ban TikTok, and the opposition from both sides of the political aisle. --- Timecodes: (03:24) Interview begins (05:20) China taking TikTok data (09:25) Why should we care about TikTok on our personal phones? On "EWTN News Nightly" tonight: As President Joe Biden was headed to Canada for a meeting with Canada's Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, he gave the "ok" for the US military to strike back at facilities used by groups affiliated with Iran's Revolutionary Guard, killing several. Meanwhile, Congressional Democrats are doubling down on abortion. They want to use US tax dollars to pay for abortions in other countries. That practice has been banned for more than 50 years. The CEO of TikTok had his day on Capitol Hill as he was grilled for nearly 6 hours on China, drugs and teen mental health. Research Associate in the Tech Policy Center at the Heritage Foundation, Jake Denton, joins to share his thoughts on the matter and whether the app is dangerous. A pro-life group in Mexico is pushing for a ban on surrogacy. Ana Cecilia Limon with Steps for Life Michoacan, joins to discuss whether this is a growing practice in Mexico. And a group of Catholic bishops based in Europe has elected a new leader. It was part of the group's 2023 assembly held this week in Rome. EWTN Vatican Bureau Chief, Andreas Thonhauser, has more. Finally this evening, ISIS terrorists ambushed a school in a suicide bombing, but Friday night the victims of the attack, a group of 20 teenage Afghan girls, rest safely in Spain. A leading technology policy expert is calling for "a wholesale ban on TikTok" a day before the Chinese-owned social media app's chief executive officer will testify before Congress.TikTok faces bipartisan scrutiny at both the state and federal level. More than 30 states, led by both Democrat and Republican governors, have taken action to ban the app on some or all state-issued devices and networks, The Daily Signal previously reported. TikTok's chief executive officer, Shou Zi Chew, will appear before the House Energy and Commerce Committee on Thursday. "I think the TikTok national security threat is so grave, so immediate, that TikTok should be banned outright," says Kara Frederick, director of the Tech Policy Center at The Heritage Foundation. (The Daily Signal is the news outlet of The Heritage Foundation.)Frederick, whose research focuses on emerging technology policy and Big Tech, adds that she is calling for "a wholesale ban on TikTok, not just on government devices." She talks about the danger of "allowing U.S. user data to get in the hands of the [Chinese Communist Party]."Frederick joins today's episode of "The Daily Signal Podcast" to further discuss the TikTok CEO's testimony, what she would ask Shou if she were in the hearing, and The Heritage Foundation's "Moms Against TikTok" rally, which is also on Thursday.
