We're having a chat about characters that differ from the source material and turn out crap because of it. Characters where the people adapting them didn't care, understand, or even take time to read the original stuff because they thought they knew better. There are a lot of instances where characters are adapted from source material and get totally messed up because the writers either don't understand or care about the source material they're taking from. Were not talking about being exactly true to a book, we're talking about understanding and respecting the characters so you can translate them to another medium and still have them recognisable and be themselves. There are many examples of poor character translation… apparently this is what happened with The Witcher in the 3rd season of the show. The story is that the led actor, Henry Cavil is a fan of the character from the books and games and took exception to the character's dilution and sidelining as the series progressed. We've been told that the writers for the show would openly laugh at the source material, something they're not really qualified to do since even the well regarded first series is extremely badly written and only gets the praise it does because of Cavel's portrayal of the lead character. An example that's very near and dear to me is the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy movie. This is a sort of a special case since the author had SOME involvement in it before he died but not enough apparently. the characters of Arthur Dent as played by Martin Freeman and Ford Prefect by Mos Def are terrible interpretations, so much so that they end up actively damaging the movie and harming the story. The essence of Arthur's character is a bemused, suburban British superiority: He has an expectation that as a British citisen his rights should be respected, his opinion should be listened to, people should understand his language, and things should conform to his suburban understanding of what is normal and good, all this is signaled by his wearing of Pajamas, a dressing gown and slippers the whole time. Whereas Martin Freeman's version simply doesn't understand what he's seeing and goes through the whole movie with an affronted frown on his stupid face. This is absolutely incorrect! Rather than not understanding anything Arthur is suppose to believe that he understands everything, but only in simple, suburban British terms,so that he can go through the story with a sense of befuddled superiority. Ford Prefect is supposed to be cool. He's easy going, and just meshes with whatever situation he's in, even if he doesn't understand it. He's very smart and quick to adapt. Mos Def's version is just a moron who looks good. All that said,Sam Rockwell's version of Zaphod was more perfect than perfect, and Zoe Dashenell was perfectly fine as Trillian, but that character was never ever written well to begin with in the original. What characters do you think with translated poorly in an adaption? Adam West's Batman? Hernry Cavil's Superman? Who? When the French chef Jean-Robert de Cavel died in December, hundreds of chefs wore their white coats to his memorial service in downtown Cincinnati. It was a testament to how many people Jean-Robert had inspired in the thirty years he lived in the city. So how did this fancy French chef end up in Cincinnati — and why did he stay? We hear about Jean-Robert's unlikely love affair with his adopted city, and we talk with food writer Keith Pandolfi about how the chef's legacy has inspired Cincy's food scene to reclaim its local pride. Then Dan and Keith come up with a new Super Bowl food craze just for Cincinnati. The Sporkful production team includes Dan Pashman, Emma Morgenstern, Andres O'Hara, Tracey Samuelson, and Jared O'Connell. The first half of this episode originally aired on November 5, 2018, and was produced by Dan Pashman, Anne Saini, and Aviva DeKornfeld, with editing by Gianna Palmer and mixing by Dan Dzula.Transcript available at www.sporkful.com.
Andy and Rob talk about Cincinnati Bengals stars Joe Burrow and Sam Hubbard's purchase of a farm. An honest-to-God farm. Also, Gen Z is coming to the workforce, and companies have got to do something about it because they're not like previous generations, even those kooky millennials. They also talk about a nonprofit devoted to increasing Black business in OTR, and the funeral of Chef Jean-Robert de Cavel.Interview starts at (22:54). Rico Grant is a serial entrepreneur and something of a Renaissance man. After a gig with GE, he joined Cincinnati startup booster Cintrifuse as a sideways in to learn the ropes of entrepreneurship, and today he is the founder of Paloozanoire – a lifestyle conference focused on enriching the lives of people of color throughout the Midwest – as well as barbershop and art gallery the Gallery at Gumbo and Cinema, a bar that serves as a love letter to Black film. Above the Fold is a podcast by the Cincinnati Business Courier.
Chefs and a Cincinnati food writer reflect on Jean-Robert de Cavel's career and legacy.
Andy and Rob talk about the (final?) closing of what was once the Cincinnati region's largest mall, as well as a craft brewery being acquired by an Ohio peer, the closing of yet another urban restaurant and P&G's fall from its position as the world's largest advertiser.Interview starts at (19:00). Molly Wellmann was Cincinnati's undisputed queen of cocktails. She got her start at Jean-Robert de Cavel's Chalk, where she was given unprecedented latitude in the kitchen when it came to making cocktails, and went on to own at one point six establishments. She sold her final bar back in July, and we catch up with her to chat about the pandemic's impact on the hospitality industry, what makes Cincinnati's bar scene great and what she's up to now.Above the Fold is a podcast by the Cincinnati Business Courier.
Jean-Robert de Cavel is never far from a kitchen – whether it's at his restaurant Le Bar a Boeuf or at home with his wife and daughter. And at 60, he told The Enquirer's "That's So Cincinnati" podcast, not even cancer will stop him. Jean-Robert said he remains in chemotherapy after first being diagnosed in 2018 with leiomyosarcoma, a soft tissue cancer. “I will never be cured," Jean-Robert said. "I just have to be strong. I keep very positive. My medical team says, ‘Keep doing what you're doing because it's working.' Never, ever give up.” The Cincinnati USA Regional Chamber named Jean-Robert as a Great Living Cincinnatian in the 2021 class. In addition to Le Bar a Boeuf in East Walnut Hills, Jean-Robert owns French Crust Café and Bistro, in Over-the-Rhine by Findlay Market. Jean-Robert came to Cincinnati in 1993 when he was 32 to work at The Maisonette, the city's only Mobil 5-star-rated restaurant. In the interview, he talked about starting his own fine dining restaurant – Jean-Robert at Pigall's and his subsequent restaurants, which he always started when he was looking for a new challenge. Asked to pick a favorite, Jean-Robert talked wistfully about Table, which was located at Seventh and Vine streets. Table closed in December 2020 because the owner sold the building. "You could come on a Monday night and have a casual dinner and come back and dress up on Saturday night and celebrate," Jean-Robert said. "Table is definitely a love affair, and it is sad what happened." Jean-Robert has said he wants to find a new space for Table, but the COVID-19 pandemic slowed the process. He told "That's So Cincinnati" that he looked at sites to potentially open a new restaurant eight months ago. But he decided not to continue to pursue it partly because of the financial challenges that the pandemic has had on the restaurant industry. Jean-Robert currently has no immediate plans to open a new restaurant, but said: “Opening a new restaurant is always on my mind.”

When Jean-Robert de Cavel arrived in Cincinnati 22 years ago, the dining scene was remarkably different than it is today. From working at the dearly departed Maisonette to opening his own restaurants, de Cavel has had a front row seat to the city's food transformation. We sat down with him at his restaurant, Jean-Robert's Table, and talked about his experience in Cincinnati. Later, we sat down with dining critic Jeff Mathews to talk about when he started thinking critically about food and why a Chinese buffet is the perfect last meal. Don't forget to subscribe to the Cincinnati Magazine podcast on iTunes.
In this episode of Qigong Radio, Energy Arts Senior Instructor Paul Cavel explains the 3 different layers of neigong practice: Beginner or Foundational Practices -- Dragon and Tiger, Opening the Energy Gates, and Heaven and Earth Intermediate or Power-Production Practices -- Spiraling Energy Body and Bend the Bow Advanced or Integration Practices -- Gods Playing in the Clouds Paul explains what to focus on at each level and how your learning spiral takes you back through them over time. I found Paul's explanation of the relationships between the sets particularly useful. Specifically, understanding Energy Gates as direct preparation for Spiraling -- first you clear the downward flow of chi, then you strengthen the upward flow. Similarly, in Heaven and Earth you learn to expand the body (through opening/closing the joints and lengthening the soft tissue) before you really go into deep internal compression in Bend the Bow. As we discussed the meaning of "integration," Paul explained how neigong is the basis for Taoist meditation and where neigong shows up inside your meditation practice.
I sat down with Energy Arts Senior Instructor Paul Cavel to discuss the developemental process of the soft tissue of the body - muscles, fascia, ligaments - in the internal arts. Paul talks about the different stages that you will go through and how to recognize when you are ready to move on to the next one. Learn more from Paul at CircleWalking.com or RelaxationMeditation.co.uk and you can always visit me at DanKleiman.com. Read more about Soft Tissue Development in Qigong.
