In today's podcast we ask how designing better infrastructure can help to really grow the UK economy. Now we hear constantly about the vital role that investment in infrastructure projects must play in driving economic growth across the nation and across the regions of the UK – be that investment in transport; in energy systems; in water treatment and supply; and in communications. And it is clear that without this investment the nation simply will not remain globally competitive; our living standards are likely to fall; and we will struggle to meet the decarbonisation challenge and to ensure we are resilient to climate change. But what can actually be done by infrastructure professionals to accelerate this investment. How do we navigate the constantly shifting national and local government policy shifts; overcome the hold ups in planning; the delays in delivery and the delivery cost over runs ?. And once constructed, how do we avoid failing to create the kind of social, economic and environmental outcomes that were promised at the outset. It's a tough conundrum but one that an army of infrastructure design and planning professionals stand ready to solve – ready to leverage their collective skills and experience to design and deliver better infrastructure – infrastructure capable of truly kickstarting and sustaining the economy and of fundamentally making lives better. So what stopping them?!To discuss this issue, my guest today is Charlie Hodgson, Executive Managing Director, Transport & Infrastructure, WSP, one of the largest consultancies in the UK. While Charlie is now responsible for the strategic direction and delivery of WSP's infrastructure and engineering teams, he started his career as an economist so perhaps more than most really understands the links between investment and outcomes and what can be done strengthen them.ResourcesWSP websiteNational Infrastructure Commission 2023 AssessmentTransforming Infrastructure Performance

Former England and British & Irish Lions tourist, Charlie Hodgson, shares his advice as to what has helped him transition away from his 16-year professional rugby career. The Sale and Saracens legend experienced an incredibly impressive career, being part of two high achieving organisations. Hodgson talks about the importance of financially planning, using transferable skills from the professional rugby environment, and preaches the significance of 'having a go' at things outside of the rugby field.
This chat with Charlie Hodgson goes in many different directions, he is a really interesting bloke.I've heard from real journalists that using silence in an interview can be a very powerful tool to get people to open up to you. On this episode, the 6 second delay that Charlie and I had to navigate was the silence that allowed Charlie to just open up and talk about his career, both the good and the bad. This is a story of a guy who has experienced many high's in his careers, he has won awards for his beers in the past, and now he is part of building something really special at Helios. But it is also a great example that success from working yourself to the bone can affect the rest of your life, and on this episode, Charlie was brave enough to share some of that with me. Thanks to Charlie for opening up on this one, it was really interesting to hear his experiences.Thankfully for him, it looks like Charlie is back on track doing what he does best. The beers coming out of Helios are fantastic, AND, they are brewed in probably the most environmentally sustainable fashion in the industry! This week we feature Charlie Hodgson, head brewer at Brisbane's Helios Brewing. Apart from having a long and varied career to discuss, Charlie also has some thought provoking insights about the role of beer's four key ingredients and how they play in the rapidly emerging style pantheon of modern craft brewing. It's a fascinating conversation that probes at where is the substance amidst rapid change and the consumer hype that drives much that we're seeing in the industry at the moment. No doubt it's a chat that will provoke quite a few thoughts, and as always, we'd love to hear what you think. Enjoy this conversation with Charlie Hodgson from Helios Brewing. It's no surprise that corporate wellbeing coach, Charlie Hodgson, knows more about resilience than most. His former career was as fly-half for Sale Sharks and Saracens rugby clubs; a career that saw him achieve the record of highest Premiership points scorer of all time. Charlie has spent his life in the public glare and without a doubt that can be a daunting prospect! However, coupled with his exploits on the field, his experiences have also equipped him with a very real sense of how to cope in the face of adversity. In this episode, Charlie shares the techniques that give him the drive to power through adversity, whether on the field or off... KEY TAKEAWAYS It doesn't matter if we're on a playing field or in an office when faced with a stressful situation, our mental and physiological reactions are the same. Recognise that your behaviour is the result of stress or the endgame of a response that has led to this mental or physical interpretation. Certainly, when we feel stress, our sympathetic system kicks in, which changes our heart rate and breathing. We need to activate our parasympathetic system in these instances by conscious breathing. Procrastination can lead to the dread of incoming deadlines, which in turn leads to anxiety. As a result, taking control of time management is critical in avoiding this time-anxiety. The dopamine hit that people get from social media or from gaining likes, is the equivalent to the rush we get from alcohol. Encouraging this addictive behaviour from a young age is hugely damaging. Above all, when dealing with high-stress individuals, we need to remember that their response is not personal to us, but a reflection of what's going on for them, and perhaps the culmination of many different factors emerging at once. If you are someone who is confrontational, consider what it will do to your relationship with that other person. Additionally, what will it do to your relationship with those who see what has happened? BEST MOMENTS ‘Our chimp brain is five times more powerful' ‘I should have had a camomile tea' ‘If you really want to give your full attention to something, then it has to be that thing only' ‘Control what you can control' ‘Look for the best in everybody' VALUABLE RESOURCES The HR Uprising Podcast | Apple | Spotify | Stitcher To learn more about the upcoming HR Uprising development programmes coming up, visit https://hruprising.com/new-hr-programmes/ Change Superhero - www.hruprising.com/changesuperhero HR Uprising Mastermind - https://hruprising.com/mastermind/ ABOUT THE GUEST Ex-international rugby player, Charlie Hodgson founded Charlie Hodgson Performance; a coaching consultancy that optimises workplace health and performance using a mix of science-backed lifestyle assessments and unique coaching techniques. Throughout his rugby career, he had many ups and downs and admits that managing his emotions through those sticky periods was incredibly hard. Whether it was dealing with difficult colleagues, making decisions under pressure or a missed kick at goal when the result was in his hands, the daily struggle was real, and at times, hugely debilitating. And, those emotional difficulties will be no different to what people undoubtedly experience every day; Workplace politics, leading their team to deliver results, make hugely important decisions under extreme pressure or simply finding time for themselves and their family…that pressure to consistently perform can be just as lonely and clinical. Today's guest is Charlie Hodgson, former England international and Saracens number 10 and founder of Charlie Hodgson Performance, his leadership coaching business. As a professional rugby player Charlie achieved everything you could want to over his 16 year career. He won multiple premiership titles with his club Saracens, played for England and went on the 2005 Lions tour. If this wasn't enough, he is also the all-time record point scorer in the premiership with 2,625 points scored. To put this into perspective if you don't follow rugby, the closest player too him who's still playing professionally has 1,569 points – almost a 1,000 points behind Charlie. As I've said before on this podcast I'm a big believer that you can and should learn from the best, regardless of their industry, and sport is no different. Given the hyper competitive nature of elite sport, teams are always looking for an edge and given Saracens success over recent years it was fascinating to sit down with Charlie and get his first-hand insights and advice of what led them to be so successful. Since retiring from professional rugby Charlie has combined his experience of developing winning teams at the top level of elite rugby with his coaching training and launched Charlie Hodgson Performance to help executives and their teams leverage the leadership principles from professional sport to develop their own high performing cultures. Charlie shares so many fascinating insights from both his sporting and business careers in this interview including: How his club Saracens were able to go from a midtable side to the best team in the league and the off field changes they made that were critical to this success. The importance of developing a positive and supportive culture in your organisation and the key elements to consider if you want to develop your own high performing team. How you can break down barriers between the different areas in your organisation and start to help your teams work together better. And much much more! It was great to get the chance to sit down with someone who has spent so long at the top of elite sport and learn what it takes to succeed at that level, both individually and as a team. There's so much in this conversation that you can apply to your career and your business and I know you're going to get a lot from what Charlie has to say. Pre-season press day - with sponsorship by UKFast. Former Guinness Premiership champions Sale Sharks are aiming to get back to the top in 2010 with the help of a record seven figure sponsorship deal from new main backers UKFast. Sale Sharks enter season 2009-2010 knowing all about the challenge, but with an unproven staff – on and off the field. On the pitch, there are many experienced performers still on the books: Charlie Hodgson, Dwayne Peel, Mathew Tait, Mark Cueto to name four. There are new names: David Seymour, Gavin Kerr and surely the longest of them all, Sisaro Koyamaibole. Youth is going to be given its chance, in the shape of Carl Fearns and James Gaskell. Behind the scenes, there’s a balance of the tried and untested. Kingsley Jones and Phil Keith-Roach represent expertise in defensive and scrummaging areas, and they welcome fitness expert Peter Finch, coach Byron Hayward and the new Head Coach Jason Robinson. Players and coaches will have to get used to the new regime – it’s a learning experience. The Heineken Cup beckons, with Harlequins, Cardiff Blues and Toulouse in the Sharks’ Pool. The club will wear a sizzling new European strip in the sponsors’ colours of black and cyan. Backing the club are new major sponsors UKFast – vibrant winners, ambitious, leaders in their own field, created in 1999, just like Sale Sharks. It could be an emotional journey, with passion, surprises, highs and lows on the way. Welcome to the opening act, the Club’s Press Day at Edgeley Park.

The lucky Sharks fans won their invitation to the pub through a Greene King IPA competition in the Manchester Evening News. Following the hour long question and answer session Ben and Charlie met fans individually for photos and to sign autographs.
