More than 20 years after he shot to fame on Pop Idol in 2002 Gareth talks about the new musical he is penning which is all about stammering. He has an overt or exteriorised stammer which causes him to get stuck at the start of a word and repeat the initial letter. Former politician, Ed, didn't realise he had a stammer until he was already serving in Gordon Brown's government. He has a covert stammer and describes it as a “block” which means the right words don't always come. He reveals the impact it had on political life when his rivals used it to rock the public's confidence in him and the moment he knew he had to go public. 24-year-old Yu Hyuk is a North Korean defector who is about to make his debut as an idol in 1VERSE, the first K-pop band to include North Korean members. Before defecting to South Korea at the age of 13, Hyuk was so poor that he had to beg on the streets to survive. He initially had a hard time adjusting to the new environment but eventually found solace in music and song-writing. Can music bridge the divide between North and South Korea for defectors like Yu Hyuk? He shares his journey into the competitive K-pop industry. What a throwback! Today it was the turn of Ciaran in Louth and Chris in Meath.
A young man calls the police around 3:30 am to report that he had just been physically assaulted by his ex-girlfriend. Officers are dispatched and the caller greets them with a few red scratches on his face. He had gone over to his ex-girlfriend's apartment to break up with her—but that's when she went crazy; scratching his face and twisting his arm. The officers ask the man for her name. Goo Hara. A K-pop idol from the girl group KARA. When the police begin investigating, the man's story begins to fall apart. If what he's saying is true, why is there CCTV footage of Goo Hara on her knees—seemingly begging the young man? Why did he email Dispatch, a Korean tabloid, twice during this so-called ‘one sided assault?' And what does all of this have to do with Burning Sun? A couple of months pass, and Goo Hara helps reporters blow the lid off the Burning Sun case. Not even a year later, she is found dead. This is part two of Burning Sun. Before ‘The X Factor' and ‘The Voice', there was ‘Pop Idol', the ITV behemoth that spawned Simon Fuller's global mega-hit ‘American Idol'. Season One climaxed on 9th February, 2002, when Gareth Gates - a 17-year-old former head chorister - and Will Young - a politely-spoken 23-year-old alumnus of Wellington College - slugged it out for the title of Pop Idol champion. Britain was captivated as the public strove to choose their favourite cover version of an unreleased Westlife album track - with over 15 million people tuning in, and 8.7 million casting their votes via telephone. Will emerged as the winner, but perhaps the real winner was the format - which centred the Judges, particularly ‘Nasty' Simon Cowell, in a way that would inspire dozens of talent show successors.
