Andrew Kleine is the author of "City On the Line" and is working tirelessly toward a future in which municipal budgeting produces the results that leaders are looking for. Shayne Kavanagh, the Senior Manager of Research for the Government Finance Officers Association, has spent his career looking at how government policy interacts with the fiscal health of the places in which he works. To some, municipal budgeting is a black box, but today's conversation aims to make this sometimes-confusing topic a little more transparent. Can the budgeting process be communicated to the public in a way that actually helps them understand and be a part of the process? The answer is yes. Kevin, Shayne, and Andrew look seriously at how we can we take a data-first approach to planning for the future and come up with ways for our budgets to actually produce meaningful results in our communities.Lots of great content to check out after you listen to this episode:https://www.gfoa.org/rethinking-budgetinghttps://bloombergcities.jhu.edu/category/budgeting-equitySome books worth checking out:City on the Line by Andrew KleineTrying Hard is Not Good Enough by Mark FriedmanThe Price of Government by David Osborne and Peter HutchinsonThe Art of Explanation by Lee LeFeverData Story by Nancy DuarteBack of the Napkin by Dan Roam

In this episode, I have the pleasure of talking with USA Today Best Selling Author, Veronica Scott. Veronica has a very interesting story that she shares with us in this episode. She is the Seven-time winner of the SFR Galaxy Award, as well as a National Excellence in Romance Fiction Award. Veronica is also the proud recipient of a NASA Exceptional Service Medal relating to her former day job, not her romances. Here is another cool thing about her: she was honored to read the part of Star Trek Crew Member in the audiobook production of Harlan Ellison’s “The City On the Edge of Forever.” I think that's fabulous. I featured Veronica's latest book on Jeny's Tattle Tales on my website at jenyheckman.com. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/jeny-heckman/support
Mark W. Travis explores the intricacies of the award-winning documentary CITY ON THE HILL, directed by Xavier Underwood. ABOUT THE FILM: Tech giant Google has pledged $1 billion to build more housing in the Bay Area. The plan includes 15,000 units on its own land, 5,000 additional affordable units over the next decade, and $50 million in grants to help non-profits who are combating homelessness and displacement. The Bay Area currently has the third-largest homeless population in the U.S. at more than 28,000 people. In City On the Hill, Xavier Underwood & Adam Fleishman (Emmy®-winning Cinematographer ‘Running with Horses’) head west to San Francisco, California to examine the residual effects of the tech boom, what made San Francisco into the great city it is, and what can be done to save it’s increasingly displaced population, interviewing civil rights leaders, politicians, Bay-Area natives, and small business owners. Directed and produced by Underwood, this perceptive film exposés of the realities of gentrification in San Francisco, CA, home to the highest housing costs in the country. Underwood interviews a variety of insiders, including Secretary Benjamin S. Carson, U.S. Department of Housing & Urban Development; Rev. Dr. Amos C. Brown, long time civil rights activist and president of the San Francisco branch of the NAACP; Miguel Bustos, Senior Director, Center for Social Justice | Glide Foundation; Nancy Conrad, wife of Legendary Astronaut Pete Conrad; Jessica Donig, Executive Director of San Francisco-based Miracle Messages; Bay-Area natives and small-business owners who progressively face harsh realities. City On the Hill is the second documentary by production house Howard Stirk Holdings, who made the 2015 primetime special A Breath of Fresh Air, which launched Dr. Ben Carson’s 2016 Presidential Campaign. City On the Hill was directed and produced by Xavier Underwood: filmed and edited by Adam Fleishman; executive producer, Armstrong Williams.

Ellison’s Original Teleplay Audiobook. If you’re a fan who loves Star Trek enough to be reading this, you’re probably already familiar with the story and the drama that surrounded the famous TOS episode “The City On the Edge of Forever,” and how Harlan Ellison’s original story differed significantly from what made it to screen. Now SkyBoat Media, the Los Angeles-based audiobook publisher, is set to bring the original teleplay to life through an audio reenactment—working together with the author. We explore the details of the project and how you can help make it happen. In this podcast, we interviewed Dr. Robert Kawashima on his recent Near Eastern Archaeology article, "Violence and the City: On the Yahwist's Leviathan." The story of Cain is ultimately an origin story of the city, i.e., a narrative representation of its nature and function. This being the case, there seems to be a constitutive relationship between violence and the city, for Cain builds the first city only after committing the first homicide. Reminiscent of Hobbes, the Yahwist sees the city as originating in the domestication of the violent impulses of its citizens. Hence the mark of Cain: it is the threat of reprisal that enables Cain to overcome his fear of, and thereby coexist with, the Other. But vengeance alone will not suffice to maintain civilized collective life, as we learn from the example of his descendant, Lamech. Rather, it is only through hospitality that men can hope to live together in peace. This is the lesson of the story of Sodom, in which the Yahwist juxtaposes the hospitality of Abraham and of Lot with the violent barbarism of the men of Sodom.
The City On the Edge of Forever. Nearly 50 years after it was written, “City” remains one of the most beloved of all Star Trek episodes. It's the first time travel story that most fans remember (sorry “Naked Time” and “Tomorrow Is Yesterday”) and made screwing with the past cool long before it became Star Trek's go-to trope. But, as a story that really lacks most of what makes TOS what it is, why does this story transcend time? In this episode of The Ready Room, we're joined by Phillip Gilfus, Andi VanderKolk, and Daniel Proulx to seek out the answer. We explore the premise, the time travel mechanism, soft-focus lighting, Edith Keeler's place in time, Kirk's dilemma, and what the story might have been like had it been set in Chicago—as Harlan Ellison originally wrote it. And, along the way, we find all the culture. Or at least most of it. In our news segment, we share our thoughts on Jonathan Frakes's recent comments about Star Trek not returning to television, and we remember the woman who, with her beehive hair and just eight appearances, helped define The Original Series. Harlan Ellison signs on as Star Trek Las Vegas's 100th guest Creation Entertainment's big bash in Las Vegas keeps piling on the riches for fans as they have added their 100th guest for the convention that kicks off on July 31. Joining the already star-studded roster is none other than Harlan Ellison, the famed SF writer behind possibly the most memorable of all TOS episodes, "The City On the Edge of Forever." Ellison has been working with IDW to bring his original City script to life as a graphic novel, and attendees at Star Trek Las Vegas will have a chance to learn about this directly from the author. Find out more at StarTrek.com. Starship Farragut to premiere "Conspiracy of Innocence" Nine years after launch (and a decade after its conception), Starship Farragut is going strong and will premiere its fourth full episode on Saturday, July 5, at its studios in Kingsland, Georgia. "Conspiracy of Innocence" will follow a presentation of the previous episode, "The Price of Anything," and afterwards fans will have a chance to interact with the cast and crew through a Q&A, studio tour, and a meet & greet. Find out more.
3D printer head to the International Space Station We've been hearing a lot about 3D printers recently. In fact, we know many people using them. And in August this seeming predecessor to the replicator will be taking to the stars as Made In Space sends the first additive manufacturing technology, or 3D printer, to the International Space Station. The purpose of sending the printer into space is to test the technology’s ability to function in zero-gravity. While aboard the ISS the printer will build 21 demonstration parts—test coupons, parts, and tools. If the printer meets expectations, the technology could potentially be used to produce spare parts on demand, making space travel safer during emergency situations, as well as making the station less dependent on resupply trips. Find out more and see photos of the printer. IDW releases The City On the Edge of Forever, Part 1 On April 6, 1967, "The City On the Edge of Forever" aired and became one of the most famous Star Trek episodes of all time. But while this tale of time travel and altered futures is amazing, it isn't quite the story that Harlan Ellison wrote. Now IDW brings us a graphic novel adaptation of Ellison's original script, and the first issue of the four-part miniseries was released today. Readers will notice the changes right off the bat as the unique and fitting art style pulls us into a city on the edge of forever that is quite different from the one we remember. Get the first issue.
Moore and Braga Look Back at "All Good Things…" 20 Years Later On the 20th anniversary of the airing of TNG's finale, "All Good Things…" writers Ronald D. Moore and Brannon Braga sat down with Dave Nemetz at Yahoo TV to reminisce about the writing of the episode and the hectic times that surrounded it. It's hard to believe that two decades have passed since Q sent Picard hopping through time, and still perhaps no TV series has topped this finale. Read the full interview on the Yahoo TV website. J. K. Woodward Shares His Art Process for The City On the Edge of Forever In August IDW and Harlan Ellison will bring us the graphic novel adaptation of Ellison's original script for "The City On the Edge of Forever." The artwork that has been revealed thus far is a fitting stylistic take on this story that became one of the most memorable moments of The Original Series. On his blog, artist J. K. Woodward has posted a step-by-step demonstation of his process for creating one page of the graphic novel, taking you through how he works with reference photos, masking, backgrounds, shadow detail, mid/foreground color, and unmasking. See the process on Woodward's blog.
Alien Spotlight, Part I. Is assimilation your thing? How about a nice fight to the death with ice cleavers? Maybe you prefer a tall glass of kanar? We all have our favorite alien races, and in 2007 IDW turned the spotlight on some of Star Trek's most famous aliens with a series of comics that told stories unique to each. In the episode of Literary Treks, Matthew Rushing and Christopher Jones take you through three of these stories and discuss a Borg plot to assimilate every life form in the galaxy at birth, Andoria's secessionist movement, and possibly Kira and Garak involved in some Cardassian plot… it's kind of hard to tell. In our news segment we judge Michael A. Martin's Seasons of Light and Darkness by its cover, unveil yet another cover for IDW's version of "The City On the Edge of Forever," find out more about David Mack's Section 31: Disavowed, and do a beauty pass of Cross Cult's USS Voyager refit. Plus, we try to figure out if Batman is actually working for Section 31.
Greg Cox: No Time Like the Past. Star Trek characters from different eras meeting is nothing new. Picard met Spock. Scotty met Geordi. Julian met a stunning 23rd-century lieutenant that made him think he might be his own great-grandfather. But two characters we never thought would cross paths are Captain James T. Kirk and Seven of Nine. Yet that's exactly what happens in Greg Cox's new book No Time Like the Past. Presenting herself as Annika Seven, Voyager's former Borg drone finds herself in the presence of the man she's come to know as a legend through the tales of her own captain. But don't worry… the story doesn't follow the path you might first think. In this episode of Literary Treks we're joined by Greg Cox to discuss No Time Like the Past, what it was like writing Seven for the first time, blending the flavors of The Original Series and Voyager, and the steps that Annika must take to never use the B word—BORG. In our news segment we bring you the book trailer for Kirsten Beyer's Acts of Contrition, sneak a peek at artwork from IDW's rendition of "The City On the Edge of Forever," John Byrne's New Visions, and the remastered Gold Key comics, and we glimpse the contents of the Stardate Collection, Volume 2.
The Return of the Serpent. During The Original Series, Kirk made many life-shattering decisions for civilizations he'd just met. In "The Apple," the discovery of naive humanoids living in a Garden of Eden-like setting on Gamma Trianguli VI was too much for the Captain to take. The people were happy, but they worshipped a god who turned out be a machine named Vaal. And when this machine saw Kirk as a threat, he destroyed it—leaving the People of Vaal in chaos. "Well, there goes paradise," quipped McCoy. End of story. Or was it? In this episode of Literary Treks Matthew Rushing and Christopher Jones are joined by Standard Orbit's Drew Stewart to discuss the three-part DC Comics story from 1987 called The Return of the Serpent. The comics tell the story of Kirk's return to Gamma Trianguli VI two decades later and the consequences of his actions in "The Apple"—and does so with the help of a dinosaur. In our news segment we check in on Una McCormack's upcoming TNG book Home Again, which has been rebranded as a DS9 novel called The Missing, Greg Cox's TOS movie-era novel Foul Deeds Will Rise, and Paula M. Block and Terry J. Erdmann's Lust's Latinum Lost (and Found). We also dig into the collaboration between IDW and Harlan Ellison to bring the original script for "The City On the Edge of Forever" to comics, check out Ryan Williams's Star Trek Lit-verse Reading Guide, and review Star Trek Ongoing #31, I, Enterprise, Part I.
Emergence. One of the stated missions of the Enterprise is to seek out new forms of life, and over the course of seven years Picard and his crew encountered a number of unusual ones. From the exocomps to the Crystalline Entity to Gomtuu, TNG showed us that life comes in many flavors. But perhaps the most unexpected discovery came near the very end of the series when the Enterprise itself began to come alive. In this episode of The Ready Room we're joined by the Earl Grey crew of Darren Moser, Phillip Gilfus, and Daniel Proulx to discuss the antepenultimate episode of The Next Generation, "Emergence," Troi's gig as a ship counselor (literally!), what Brannon Braga described as an attempt to create the ultimate holodeck story, the tag-team PowerPoint prowess of Data and Geordi, and Beverly's secret fascination with the Orient Express. In our news segment we discuss the trailers for TNG Season Six and "Chain of Command" on Blu-ray, the collaboration between IDW and Harlan Ellison to bring the original script for "The City On the Edge of Forever" to comics, and we remember TNG's Lt. Commander Daren, Australian actress Wendy Hughes.
Commentary: Trek Stars: The Work of Star Trek Creators Outside of Star Trek
Ellison, Part 1: Trek. This week, Max and Mike begin a new series on writer Harlan Ellison, looking at his work on The Outer Limits. Ellison's “The City On the Edge of Forever” is considered by many to be Star Trek's finest hour. The story of Kirk finally falling in love, only to have that love snatched away by the Universe is both epic in scale and personal in emotion. It is thought of by most to be a masterpiece. But not by Ellison. The episode's road to the screen was undoubtedly the most troubled of any Trek episode. Ellison's original screenplay was thought to be unfilmable and uncharacteristic of Trek. As such, it was heavily rewritten by Gene Roddenberry and others, until it became something that Ellison despised. Three decades later, Ellison published his original screenplay along with an essay telling his side of the story. The book is almost as epic as the episode itself. For the first part in our series on Ellison, we are joined by Drew Stewart of Standard Orbit and John Mills of Words with Nerds to look at both the finished episode and the original screenplay. We discuss whether or not it is the best episode of Trek, how the aired version differs from the first draft, whether or not the changes are for the better, and what Ellison's essay says about the creative process.
