Today I sit down for an interview with historian Mike Rapport to discuss his latest book: City of Light, City of Shadow: Paris in the Bellé Epoch. In City of Light, City of Shadows, Mike Rapport uncovers a Paris riven by social anxieties and plagued by overlapping epidemics of poverty, political extremism, and anti-Semitism. As the Sacré-Cœur and Eiffel Tower rose into the skies, redefining architecture and the Paris skyline, Paris's slums were plagued by disease and gang violence. The era, now remembered as a high point of French art and culture, was also an age of intense political violence, including anarchist bombings, organized right-wing mobs, and assassinations.Buy The BookSupport the Show
Historically Thinking: Conversations about historical knowledge and how we achieve it
The Paris of the Belle Époque was a city divided by new and old conflicts–the tensions of modernity, and the schisms which had divided France since 1789. Modernity, which the city both exemplified and advanced, could be both celebrated and the source of anxiety–sometimes by the same person at more or less the same time, certainly by the same person at different times. “The glories of the Belle Epoque were real enough,” writes my guest, “like many myths and cliches, they contain an element of truth–but they tell only one side of the story. The era was also riven by political conflict, crackling with social tension, and fraught with cultural friction. And, of course, it ended with the industrialised carnage of the First World War in 1914.” Michael Rapport is Reader in Modern European History at the University of Glasgow. He has previously written about topics related to the age of the French Revolution, and the revolution of 1848. His most recent book is City of Light, City of Shadows: Paris in the Belle Époque, which is the subject of our conversation today. For Further Investigation Michael Rapport has also written 1848: Year of Revolution; The Napoleonic Wars: A Very Short Introduction; and The Unruly City: Paris, London, and New York in the Age of Revolution, which is a fine companion read to Episode 350, Episode 281, and Episode 176 Urban Insider's guide to the Paris Metro A guide to Montmartre And a walk through Montmartre A guide to Art Nouveau in Paris A collection of Zola reading lists: his novels in their written order; his suggested way to read through his novels; a five-novel list; a ten-novel list; and a twenty-novel list
"My name is Justin AKA Hyper. I am the esteemed Game Master/Co-Host/Composer/Editor for Last Light City Comics. Last Light City Comics is a 2-player, actual play, superhero series focusing on myself and my co-host, Danni, as we focus in on individual characters within this vast, connected superhero world. We focus in on their stories of self-discovery and identity, while also focusing on consequences of the decisions they and the way the world changes when it makes contact with any individual person seeking to change themselves or the world around them. This season, our first season, Ryder Unlimited, focuses on the story of Harmony Winters AKA Ryder, as she runs away from her supervillain mother, Absolute Zero, in search of a team of superheroes she has idolized since her childhood, The Wielders Of Light. However, she quickly discovers that finding the Wielders Of Light is easier said than done. The only way to even get an idea, a chance, maybe, to find where they might be is to walk their footsteps and navigate the same strange waters they once defended the Earth in. As she makes her way to other individuals who wield the same power they once wielded, a powerful energy signature, that moves through the entire universe, called The Transforce. Ryder also uses this power, much like the Wielders Of Light did, to transform light and emotion into armor and weapon to battle monsters beyond comprehension. And that is where we find Ryder in this episode. This episode is a condensed version of episode 2 of Ryder Unlimited titled: Don't Get Crushed! In the episode that precedes this, Ryder has just managed to escape the small town of Australia, NY after battling against a Diabolical Machine, one of many monsters that her mother is sending out to bring her and her transformation belt back to her organization. Now, she finds herself in the town of Gear Creek, pointed in that direction by some locals in Australia, NY, hoping to find some information, not just about the Wielders, but about one of their old allies: STARMAN. Here, she begins her tale, on a Greyhound bus, hoping for some answers." cw: Power Rangers-typical violence, Profane Language No transcript available. https://lastlightcitycomics.weebly.com/

Salt Light City | February 5, 2023 by The Lutheran Church of St. Andrew
"You are the salt of the earth, but if salt has lost its taste, how shall its saltiness be restored? It is no longer good for anything except to be thrown out and trampled under people's feet. You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven." (Matthew 5:13-16, ESV)Support the show

Hey all! Welcome to this week's installment of Mr. P.'s Tales from the Road! This week we dive back into the final of my top three favorite industrial ruins in Cleveland, Ohio, finishing off the trifecta with some history on and stories about National ACME, a massive abandoned pieces-parts factory NOT related to anything even remotely Wile E. Coyote. Rust, grime, EPA violations, rats the size of raccoons, and as always, stories abound, so grab a chair, put together some hot Kraft mac-n-cheese, grab a beverage of choice and enjoy the next half hour. Enjoy and have a great upcoming weekend! -Mr. P. MR. P. INFO: The majority of my work gets published at the Mr. P. Hey all! Welcome to this week's installment of Mr. P.'s Tales from the Road! In this episode, we continue looking into a few of Cleveland, Ohio's best known and well-loved abandoned locations; the quiet bulk of the Warner-Swasey Factory and the geometrical genius and hidden nooks and crannies of the old Westinghouse Factory. Stories abound, so grab a seat, pick up something to nosh on and a secure a frosty beverage of choice for the next forty minutes-ish as I spin a few tales and attempt to conceptualize these two massive industrial gems! Hey all! Welcome to this week's installment of Mr. P.'s Tales from the Road! In this episode, I present a "love letter" to my home city of Cleveland, Ohio, and tell the tale of what Cleveland was like when I was only a few years old, based on the memories I have from a time long gone. I also talk about how the things I saw forty years ago have influenced the exploration and photography I do today. We'll be going back into a time when one could almost chew the metallic flavored air in downtown Cleveland and a time when a five year old might be enticed to buy a faux gold chain from sketchy individuals on Euclid Avenue. So, grab a seat, some tasty snackage and a frosty beverage of choice for the next forty minutes and join me for a little Q and A!! Enjoy and have a great upcoming weekend! -Mr. P. Epidemiologists around the world have sounded the alarm about the health risks of rising noise pollution, and called out cars as one of the largest sources of the crisis. In our quest to make cities quieter, though, noise researcher Dr. Erica Walker says we're missing a critical conversation about how unique communities experience their local soundscapes, both in the streets and beyond — and who we harm when we police decibel levels without listening to marginalized people first. In this episode of The Brake, we sit down with Dr. Walker to explore not just why ultra-quiet electric cars won't actually turn down the volume on our neighborhoods much, but who gets to decide what our cities should sound like, how we enforce arbitrary auditory standards, and why a peaceful, walkable street is often the opposite of silent. Learn more about Dr. Erica Walker and the Community Noise Lab here.
