Send us a Text Message. Embracing Solitude in Nature with Clay Hayes: A Gateway to Self-Reflection and ConservationIn the serene echoes of nature, where the rustle of leaves and the distant call of wildlife prevail over the buzz of technology, Clay Hayes from "Adventure Diaries" offers a profound invitation: embrace solitude. In Season 2, Episode 3, Clay shares his wisdom on the transformative power of spending undistracted time in the wilderness. The Call to AdventureClay Hayes challenges us to step away from the constant connectivity of our digital lives and venture solo into the woods. This is not just about disconnecting from electronics; it's about reconnecting with ourselves. Clay suggests sitting alone on a stump, perhaps in a local wild area, to contemplate and introspect. “Why do I live the way that I do? Am I happy?” These questions aren't just rhetorical; they're a call to dig deeper into our existence. The Benefits of Solo Time in NatureSolitude in nature offers more than just a break from the urban hustle. It's a rare opportunity to confront our thoughts without distractions. This practice, as Clay notes, can lead to significant insights about our personal happiness and life choices. Such experiences are not just refreshing but can be fundamentally life-altering, providing clarity and renewed purpose.Conservation and Paying it ForwardMoving beyond personal growth, Clay uses his platform to advocate for wildlife conservation. As a wildlife biologist, he emphasizes the importance of protecting wildlife habitats, which support diverse species and preserve the natural landscapes we cherish. Instead of pointing to specific organizations, he encourages us to find and support conservation groups that resonate with our personal passion for the environment.Join the Adventure"Adventure Diaries" isn't just about listening; it's about doing. The podcast invites listeners to join mini expeditions and events, offering a chance to apply the episode's insights. These gatherings are intimate, focusing on connecting like-minded adventurers eager to explore the untouched corners of the planet.ConclusionClay Hayes reminds us that the journey to self-awareness and environmental consciousness begins with a simple step into the wilderness. Whether it's a short retreat or a lengthy sojourn, the time spent alone in nature is a profound teacher. As we explore the wild, we not only discover more about ourselves but also how we can contribute to the larger cause of conservation. For those inspired to take action, remember, the paths to discovery and change are often walked alone.Support the Show. Thanks For Listening. If you enjoyed this episode, please leave a comment and subscribe for more exciting content. Liz Hayes would probably consider herself an every-day mom but being married to Clay Hayes quickly threw her into the spotlight when he won History Channel's hit survival series, “Alone” Season 8. After I watched Clay survive 74 days in a remote location in British Columbia where he battled starvation, freezing temperatures, grizzly bears, loneliness, and a plethora of other challenges, I knew I HAD to meet the woman holding down the fort at home. As it turns out, Liz has her own incredible story of enduring hardship, facing challenges, overcoming obstacles, and a journey in building mental toughness as well. In this conversation, we chat about the obstacles she had to overcome, how she finds the balance between supporting her husband while also pursuing her own interests, the risks they took in starting a business as an already single-income family, and how she's changed since the show. Of course, we chat about mom-life, preparing for kids to leave the nest, gardening, homeschool, and mindset shifts around SAHM life. All of this is packed into this incredible episode with a fantastic woman I have been anxiously waiting to meet. Grab a cozy beverage, sweet mama! You don't want to miss this conversation. The new season of Alone premieres tonight 6/3/2021. We were honored to have Clay Hayes on the podcast to give us a little preview. From Clay Hayes Today, we’re so distracted that the vast majority of us go through our entire lives without ever questioning why we do things the way we do them. When’s the last time you experienced true, undistracted aloneness? When’s the last time you questioned your MO? I hope you’ll join me for the premier of my new YouTube vid this Thursday evening at 8:30/7:30c just before the premier of ALONE. I’ll be live chatting so see ya there! Clay Hayes - YouTube From Alone: CLAY HAYES Season 8 Age: 40 Hometown: Milton, FL Profession: Professional Bowyer & Hunter Clay Hayes has been a lifelong student of the woods. Growing up in the rural pine woods of northwest Florida, he honed the skills in hunting, fishing and trapping that would serve him for the rest of his life. He has always been drawn to hunter/gatherer cultures and the self-reliant lifestyle they embody. As a child in the Florida backwoods, he practiced the primitive skills he admired in those self-reliant cultures and dreamed of someday living a similar life in the Rocky Mountains. Those childhood dreams eventually led him into a career as a wildlife biologist, where he got to work in some of the most remote and beautiful landscapes in the lower 48. But despite investing seven years of college and ten years in the job, his true passion was always primitive and traditional archery. In 2017, he left the biology career behind to focus on teaching primitive bow building and archery through online videos and in-person classes. Since building his first successful bow in 1999, Clay has introduced tens of thousands of people to traditional and primitive archery through his books, magazine articles and online videos. Clay lives with his wife Liz and two sons, Coye and Fen, on their homestead in North Idaho. Together they hunt, fish, forage and grow a large garden. Raising their two boys in close connection with the earth, with a practical understanding of nature and a sense of self-reliance, is important to both Clay and Liz. Here are the ten items Clay selected to bring on his survival journey to Grizzly Mountain: 1. Sleeping bag 2. Pot 3. Axe 4. Saw 5. Multitool 6. Bow and arrows 7. Paracord 8. Fishing line and hooks 9. Snare wire 10. Ferro rods

We get into some elk hunting and the importance of supporting organizations such as BHA, PBS and your local state's traditional archery club.
Hunting with goats? Yes, goats. Pack goats are more than just helpful for carrying a load. As you will hear, they can even be valuable hunting partners from a strategic perspective. Unlike horses, which are often left in camp, pack goats can hunt right by your side. In fact, when Mark killed his bull in 2016 there were several goats just yards away. In this episode, Mark is joined again by Clay Hayes (previously on Episode 27) to discuss their experiences hunting with pack goats. Whether you are interested in owning and raising pack goats for hunting, curious about renting pack goats for a backcountry hunt, or just want to hear some funny tales about hunting with these interesting animals, you'll be sure to enjoy this episode. On this episode of Gritty Bowmen, we hang out with traditional archer, conservationist, and film producer Clay Hayes of Twisted Stave Media. On this podcast we on location at the Backcountry Hunters and Anglers Annual Rendezvous. Clay makes his own bows and hunts with them--he carves them out of a piece of wood. He’s a “real” hard-core traditional archer. He and I and Mark Brownlee get to know each-other on this podcast. We talk about his films, which I highly recommend. And I think Clays films are especially good to share with your non-hunting friends. You can find his films at http://www.twistedstave.com/ I really like Clay. He’s a deep and thoughtful person. And his films are the same.

Clay Hayes is an outdoors renaissance man of sorts. His skills are honed in the backcountry, allowing him to survive — even thrive — in harsh conditions. Clay partnered with Backcountry Hunters & Anglers to produce an instructional film series called The Backcountry College. In additional to woodsmanship skills, Clay is a very knowledgable resource in the area of traditional archery. Clay builds his own equipment by hand and has the skills to harvest big game with his simple, hand-crafted stick and string. Whether you want to learn some tips and tricks to help you survive in the backcountry or you want to learn a bit more about traditional archery, you'll enjoy this episode.
