Joining me on the podcast today is extreme adventurer, motivational speaker and world record holder Ash Dykes. I had the privilege to sit down with Ash just a couple of weeks before he embarks on his next world record first in the Amazon, arguably his most dangerous challenge yet, exploring a territory no human is believed to have been before. This really is a challenge where every decision could be the difference between life and death. Ash's story is one of hardships, determination, and resilience. There have been moments when it seemed like the world was against him, but his unwavering belief in his work drives him forward until he achieves his dreams. One of the most important lessons we can take from this episode is realising how crucial the decisions we make during our most vulnerable moments are, and how those choices can shape both who we are and the final outcome.

In today's episode, Toni sits down with Ash Dykes, an extreme athlete and adventurer known for his world record-breaking expeditions. Ash discusses his journey from cycling across Cambodia and Vietnam at age 19 to embarking on a solo and unsupported trek across Mongolia. He shares insights into his motivations, fears, and preparations for the challenging expedition, highlighting the physical and mental obstacles he faced along the way. Ash's determination and resilience shine through as he recounts the highs and lows of his remarkable adventure, showcasing his unwavering commitment to pushing his limits and exploring the unknown. KEY TAKEAWAYS Despite facing overwhelming challenges and dangers, Ash Dykes' naivety and curiosity drove him to push his limits and embark on an extreme adventure in Mongolia. Ash Dykes recorded a voice memo to himself, providing a stern talking to and motivation for future moments of doubt or difficulty during the expedition. He completed the expedition in 78 days, surpassing the anticipated 100-day timeline, showcasing his determination and ability to achieve beyond set goals. From facing dehydration to navigating harsh terrains, Ash Dykes encountered numerous risks and challenges during the expedition, highlighting the physical and mental resilience required for such extreme adventures. BEST MOMENTS "I think one of my biggest fears was I just didn't know myself fully. I didn't know to what point would I quit? I did not know how I would react to a pack of wolves following me or to a sandstorm or to a well being dry." "I remember feeling positive, you know, warm, sheltered, belly full of food, cup of tea in hand, thinking about all the worst cases that can happen out in Mongolia from the wolves, the blizzards, you name it." "I remember being on the plane. I remember being in the capital, flying from the capital to the most Western city, which is only like, three quarters, maybe of the land. And it was like a three hour plane ride." "It took 78 days. It was anticipated to take 100 days, so I knocked 22 days off the predicted time." HOST BIO Toni's journey defies the norm. Raised with a strong work ethic and a traditional career path in mind, she initially pursued a corporate job in HR after earning her degree. However, in 2015, everything changed when she attended a property training seminar. Little did she know that this event would ignite a profound passion for property investment. With her husband Chris, Toni raised millions in joint venture finance, creating a multi-million-pound property portfolio. But her story doesn't stop there. By the age of 33, she left her HR job behind to empower others in building their successful property businesses. Toni's passion for public speaking led her to become a world record holder. Beyond the accolades, she sees it as a calling to educate and inspire. Toni hosts training events and uses her "Talks with Toni" podcast to share insights, interview captivating guests, and motivate her audience.

In the anticipation of Season 2 of "Adventure Diaries," the show takes us back to the inspiring journeys and profound insights from its first season. One standout episode features none other than the intrepid explorer, Ash Dykes. Known for his daring solo treks across Mongolia and Madagascar, Ash brings a refreshing perspective to what it truly means to embrace adventure—right where you are.The Call to Local AdventureDuring the podcast, Ash challenges the common misconception that adventure must be far-flung and exotic. Instead, he encourages us to seek out the adventures that lie just beyond our front doors. Whether it's hiking, cycling, canoeing, or mountain trekking, opportunities for adventure are closer than we think. This concept not only demystifies the idea of adventure but also makes it accessible to everyone, regardless of their location or budget.Ash's message resonates deeply, especially as he reflects on how his own adventurous spirit was kindled by local exploits before he ever set foot abroad. His approach is a call to action for all of us to stop overanalyzing and start exploring the vast possibilities within our reach.Growth, Mindset, and the Spirit of GivingThe podcast not only revisits the thrill of adventure but also ties it to personal growth and philanthropy. Ash discusses how embarking on adventures, whether locally or internationally, can significantly impact our mindset and personal development. He highlights programs like charity challenges that allow adventurers to achieve personal milestones while contributing to worthy causes. One cause close to Ash's heart, as discussed in the podcast's "Pay It Forward" segment, is the fight against malaria. Ash passionately advocates for "Malaria No More UK," a charity dedicated to eradicating malaria—a disease far more devastating than many others yet often overlooked in regions like the UK. He emphasizes the stark reality that every two minutes, a child dies from malaria, yet the cost of life-saving medication is as little as a cup of coffee.Join Ash on His Next ExpeditionAs an exciting addition to his illustrious career, Ash reveals plans to lead his own adventure trips. These aren't just any trips, but expeditions to the remote landscapes he knows intimately, like the Gobi Desert and the rugged terrains of Mongolia and West China. Ash Dykes was a normal bloke working in a very normal town in Wales. That was until he turned 23 years old and decided to walk across Mongolia, solo and unsupported. For many, this would have been their greatest achievement. But for Ash, he sought after bigger feats and deeper challenges. Since Mongolia, he became the first to trek across Madagascar, contracting the deadliest strain of malaria and became the first to walk the 4,000 mile course of the Yangtze river - gaining celebrity status in China following its completion.Ash has appeared on podcasts such as the Joe Rogan Experience and The High Performance Podcast, so it was a privilege to finally sit down with him and hear more of his incredible stories and how a boy from Oly Colwyn went on a life of adventure that few could dream of.

A few include cycling 1,130 miles through Cambodia & Vietnam in 15 days on £10 bikes, walking across Mongolia solo and unsupported, covering over 1,500 miles in 78 days while pulling a wheeled trailer weighing 120kg, walking the entire length of Madagascar covering 1,600 miles, taking 155 days to complete (where he was held up by the military, contracted the deadliest form of Malaria and crossed crocodile-infested rivers) and more recently hiking the entire length of the Yangtze River in China which was a 4,000-mile journey, taking nearly a year to complete. So as you can probably imagine, the stories and experiences Ash has collected are nothing short from jaw dropping. He discusses the psychological component of undertaking these huge challenges, the emotional challenges and how he proactively utilised visualisation and self-belief to push on whilst maintaining a head strong mentality despite external doubts and concerns. He also reveals the true extend of his expeditions – the years of planning, commitment, surviving near death experiences, cultivating true mental resilience and shares the lessons he learned throughout his extreme endeavours.

Follow extreme adventurer Ash Dykes on a world first trek along the entire 4,000-mile length of the Yangtze River in China. Travelling from the Tibetan Plateau in the far northwest of the country, through 11 provinces to the river's estuary near Shanghai in the south he will face innumerable challenges: dodging aggressive Tibetan bears, fighting off wild Tibetan Mastiffs, he was stalked by wolves, arrested and nearly hit by landslides. But through his journey he also explored a side to China that few travellers have seen before, from thundering white-water gorges and spectacular V-shaped valleys to tropical forests and paddy fields teeming with colour. He also became a Chinese celebrity. Much to his surprise, the further he walked the more the Chinese people walked with too. Internet superstars live-streamed beside him to millions of followers, he was celebrated in the Chinese media, welcomed in by locals, taught Chinese opera, kung-fu, meditation and even asked to join a photoshoot with movie star Jackie Huang. It took him 352 days and eight million steps to complete. It was a world-record, the first time anyone had walked the entire length of China's great river, and the experience taught him much. He learned about motivation, about discipline, about the power of visualization – skills and wisdom that can be applied to all aspects of life. But more than anything he learned that you can make impossible things happen if you have the courage to ignore the naysayers, prepare for the struggle as well as the successes, and don't let anything stand in your way. Highlights:·      Hear the incredible story of Ash Dyke's world-recording breaking 4,000-mile trek along the entire length of the Yangtze River·      Find out how Ash survived being stalked by a pack of wolves and fought off wild Tibetan Mastiffs·      Listen to the best worst food story you've ever heard. Welcome back to the Fearless Training "Roar Knowledge" Podcast. Episode 71: Ash Dykes - Life Lessons From An Extreme Athlete/Explorer EXPLORER & EXTREME ATHLETE Ash recently headlined global news by becoming the first person to hike the entire length of the Yangtze River in China. A 4,000-mile journey that took him 352 days to complete, he faced bears, altitude, wolves, landslides, blizzards and had to send 10 of the 16 team members (that joined him for short stints at different locations) home, due to altitude sickness, fear of wildlife and/or injury Not only a Guinness approved World First, the trip was also one of the world’s most interactive firsts, with Ash sharing updates via blogs, vlogs and live streams along the way. Often Ash opened the mission up to the public and at times was joined by Chinese celebrities and members of the public. Ash also partnered up with organisations like the WWF, Yibin Fishery Department, Water-To-Go, the British Consulate General and the Green Development Foundation. Doing this, he was able to share positive news of all the great work being done to help protect and preserve the natural environment, making this one of the focus points of the mission. In 2016, Ash achieved his second world record by becoming the first person to walk the entire length of Madagascar’s interior, whilst summiting its eight highest Mountains. An expedition of over 1,600 miles, taking 155 days to complete and faced many challenges, from being held up by the military, avoiding bandits, contracting the deadliest form of Malaria, crossing croc infested rivers, hacking through near impenetrable jungle during the cyclone season and much more. In 2014, Ash became the first ever recorded person to hike across Mongolia solo and unsupported, covering over 1,500 miles in 78 days. He trekked over the Altai Mountains, through the Gobi Desert and the Mongolian Steppe, all whilst pulling a wheeled trailer weighing 120kg, carrying everything needed to survive. Sir Ranulph Fiennes described it as being “an example of great determination, to achieve something that’s becoming harder all the time, an adventuring ‘first’, which would have proved both physically and mentally challenging”. Ash was invited back to Madagascar and named as the UK Ambassador for Madagascar Tourism; his promotion of the island reached over 350,000,000 people worldwide. Ash also became Special Ambassador of Malaria No More UK, an organisation working to eradicate malaria within our lifetime, an organisation also supported by David Beckham and Sir Andy Murray. Ash’s achievements have seen him invited to 10 Downing Street on two occasions, and receive awards such as the 2015 UK Adventurer of the Year Award and the 2016 Welsh Adventurer of the Year Award. Ash has taken two speaking tours across the UK, and toured across Asia, speaking in Singapore, Myanmar, Korea and across China. He has delivered three TEDx Talks, as well as presented in schools, colleges, universities, and spoken in parliament alongside Annie Lennox. Ash’s book, Mission Possible, is an Amazon Best Seller and is sold in every English-speaking market around the world, and has been translated into Mandarin and Vietnamese. Hey monkiis, I am psyched to welcome 3x world-first record holder and all-around Wildman Ash Dykes (@ash_dykes) to the show. Ash is a Welsch adventurer and explorer who has 3 world-first records. These include trekking across Mongolia and Madagascar, each of which he did before the age of 25. In August 2019, he achieved his third official record, becoming the first person to walk along the full 4,000-mile (6,437km) course of the Yangtze, the longest river in Asia. What blew my mind was that even before these record-setting expeditions, he was out there being Wild like it was his job. Check out what else he's done below. Cycling Cambodia & Vietnam (1130 miles) in 15 days on £10 bikes. Trekking the Himalayas in North India. Cycling a part of Australia (700 miles) in 13 days. Learned how to survive in the jungle with a Burmese Hill Tribe. Cycled the length of Britain (985 miles) in 7days for charity. Walked 200 miles across Wales in the dead of winter. Trekked alone through the Alps during winter just missing a landslide. Worked as a scuba diving instructor for two years in Thailand. Competed against the locals in the martial art of Muay Thai. I first heard Ash on Joe Rogan's podcast and he just oozed this enthusiasm for adventure and has lived almost half his life in what we in monkii culture would call Misogi - he is constantly expanding his imagination and testing himself to see what is possible. For all his accomplishments he remains grounded, he remains humble, and when hearing him speak you understand that for him it is all about the journey. I also really respect how he is giving back to some of the communities he has visited. He is an Ambassador of Malaria No More UK, an organization working to eradicate malaria within our lifetime. Spoiler alert, but Ash did contract malaria himself and I can see why he has a special interest in helping fight the disease. Ash has written a book called Mission Possible and there is a documentary that follows his expedition trekking across Mongolia and another one on the way that captures his epic adventure along the Yangtze. Show notes: You can find Ash on his website, www.Ashdykes.com. Ash is on Instagram @ash_dykes. He has a rad YouTube channel. Yangtze River Expedition documentary trailer. Check on Ash on the Joe Rogan Experience. I had a wild time talking with Ash and I’m stoked to follow the journey ahead.  If you have questions, please send a note to Elders@monkii.co or send us a DM to @monkii.co on Instagram we can get more monkii Q&A sessions going. Thanks for tuning in and if you are enjoying the episodes we would be eternally grateful if you could leave a 5-star review. It helps to grow the monkii family and spread the good word of the Wild. Life can throw a lot of different perspectives at us. So many people have advice and guidance on what WE should try or focus on next. It can be extremely difficult at times to determine what we should truly be focusing our sights on. It reminds me of a true explorer, someone like Ash Dykes. Someone who spends a year at a time lost in the wilderness finding their way along a specific path with only one end goal in mind. There are times he will need his binoculars to look into the distance for that landmark to confirm he is moving in the right direction, and how far he still has to go. There will be times his trail presents an impasse. Something he must look closely at his map to determine the best possible detour. Now, he reaches into his bag for the magnifying glass. To see the details of the journey and make sure he takes the right STEPS in the moment. After making it around the blockage, it's back to the binoculars to asses where the detour has positioned him in relation to the end goal. For many years, I have only left home with one or the other. Not understanding that both are necessary.Binoculars give us vision and understanding of where we are in relation to the BIG goal. The Magnifying Glass helps us to avoid missteps, and catch the details that can make a difference in the efficiency of our journey.

In this episode Ash talks about some of his early travel experiences. Which include training and competing as a Muay Thai fighter in Thailand, as well as working as a scuba diving instructor around the same time. He also shares the incredible story of how he made it into the record books by completing two world firsts. He was the first person to walk the entire length of Mongolia, and he did it solo and unsupported. And he was the first person to walk the entire length of Madagascar's interior, and he climbed to the summit of the country's eight highest peaks along the way. Each expedition came with many challenges and dangers. Some that almost cost Ash his life. Though through proper preparation, a strong mindset, and a willingness to never give up, he successfully completed both expeditions. And now he is about to set off on his greatest expedition yet... walking the entire length of the Yangtze River in China. A distance of approximately 4,000 miles and it will take him about an entire year to complete! Along with this, Ash also shares his insight on how putting yourself in uncomfortable situations helps you grow as person, why you should be prepared for worst-case scenarios, and how humans are far more capable than what many might believe. This was an incredible conversation, one that I got loads of tremendous value from, and I know you all will too!
