Jessie Krebs spent her early life escaping into the wilderness — not for adventure, but for safety. Childhood abuse, a body that didn't feel safe around people, a military career that taught her everything except how to trust herself. What the outdoors gave her was the one thing she couldn't find anywhere else: the feeling of just being a creature on the planet. In this conversation, HeatherAsh and Jessie talk about what really happens when women step into the wild — and why it's so much less about survival skills and so much more about remembering who they are. Jessie is a SERE instructor, wilderness therapy veteran, and Alone Season 9 contestant who has spent decades watching women walk into her programs with their eyes on the ground and walk out standing tall. They get into why women have been trained to see nature as dangerous, how patriarchy and fear of wilderness are the same story, what bow drill fire has to do with your emotional patterns, and why Jessie's three rules for surviving any emergency apply just as well to your life at home.Episode Highlights:How childhood sexual abuse sent Jessie outside — and why the wilderness was the only place that felt safeThe military, SERE training, and the unlikely path from introvert to instructorWhat wilderness therapy actually looks like — and what 11 years of it taught Jessie about masks, patterns, and healingWhy women arrive in Jessie's programs feeling incapable and what happens when someone puts a rope in their handsThe statistics nobody talks about: why the bear isn't what you should be afraid ofJessie's 46 days on Alone Season 9 and the TV show Braver for teensThe three survival rules that work in the backcountry and in your office: relax, signal, insulateResources & Links:Learn more about Jessie and her courses:https://www.owlsskills.com/Follow Jessie on Instagram:https://www.instagram.com/owls.skills/Meet Jessie KrebsJessie Krebs has spent her life finding her way back to the wild. What began as a child's escape from abuse became a calling — through 11 years as a wilderness therapy field guide, a career as an Air Force SERE instructor, and now as the founder of O.W.L.S. Skills (Outdoorsy Women Learning Survival), where she teaches women and underrepresented communities how to handle real emergencies in real wilderness. She has appeared on History's Alone Season 9 and National Geographic's Mygrations, taught on MasterClass, and leads everything from single-day courses to multi-week expeditions. Her guiding conviction: the wilderness doesn't judge — and in that freedom, people heal things they didn't even know needed healing.

Pinned against Arctic cliffs with no way out, Jim Baird realized the truth too late. One bad decision had put him and his brother in a position where no one was coming to help.   In this episode of The Hard Way, Joe De Sena sits down with Alone season 4 winner and extreme explorer Jim Baird to break down remote survival, mental strain, and the consequences of poor judgment in unforgiving environments.   Jim explains why Alone was mentally harder than his most dangerous expeditions, how hardship builds real resilience, and why ownership matters when things go wrong. This episode gives you practical lessons on discipline, endurance, and making better decisions under pressure, grounded in real stakes.   Things You Will Learn: How to recognize when a bad decision becomes a survival problem and what to do next. Why mental endurance breaks faster than physical strength in isolation. How small, daily discomfort builds real resilience and consistency.   Tools & Frameworks Covered: Consequence Ownership: Accept and solve the problem once the decision is made. Controlled Discomfort Training: Use small challenges to build endurance and discipline. Mental Endurance Under Isolation: Manage uncertainty, fatigue, and slow decline.   If this episode moved you, don't just listen. Do something about it. Sign up. Show up. Do the work. Spartan.com. One mistake can end a survival challenge. One accident can erase weeks of memory. One loss can change the shape of a whole family. We're joined by Joe Robinet, a Canadian bushcraft and camping creator who helped define outdoor YouTube long before it was a career path, and he brings a rare mix of hard-earned skills and hard-earned perspective. We talk through Joe's early life in Windsor, Ontario, chasing wilderness without a mentor, and the way online forums and a trusted teacher helped him become a legit outdoorsman. From there, Joe breaks down what actually built his channel: switching from “how-to” clips to story-driven canoe trips and tarp camps, staying honest on camera, and learning the unglamorous realities of the algorithm, thumbnails, titles, and audience feedback. Then we dig into Alone Season 1, including the tryouts, the pressure to film for airtime, and what it's like to get dropped in a cedar swamp with tides, soaked wood, and no sunlight. Losing his fire steel on day two ends the run, but it also lights a fire that pushes him to outwork the setback and redefine what success looks like. The second half gets even deeper: bear safety and food storage, why hypothermia is a bigger threat than most people admit, and the story behind his CBC documentary Nerve, including a dirt bike crash, traumatic brain injury, and three weeks in an induced coma with vivid “memories” that never happened. Woven through it all is grief for his brother Isaac, and the lesson Joe wants to leave behind: learn from our mistakes before they become your pain.If this conversation hits you, subscribe, share it with a friend who needs it, and leave a review so more people can find these stories.

How do these mindsets shape our sense of agency, creativity, and connection to the world around us?We unpack how prolonged stress narrows perception and creates patterns that feel automatic. Send us a textA rusty mug that cuts your lip. A wood stove without a door. Eighty days on Great Slave Lake will make you grateful for the little things—and will redraw your map of what matters. We sat down with winter guide and Alone Season 7 alum Kielyn Marrone to unpack how survival clarity and traditional craft can turn deep cold into deep comfort.Kielyn traces the path from competitive athlete to outdoor educator to co‑founder of Lure of the North, guiding everyone from first‑timers at a cozy base camp to hardy travellers on committing northern routes. She breaks down the traditional winter system—canvas anoraks, big snowshoes, hot tents, and freight toboggans—and why breathable, natural materials outperform heavy “cold camping” in real wilderness. We dig into her DIY roots: teaching moccasin, mitten, and anorak workshops; launching gear kits and videos; then intentionally splitting the retail side to protect the expedition focus and avoid burnout. The conversation travels home to their off‑grid homestead built from a prospector tent and a leaking aluminum boat, now powered by a 12 kW solar array with diesel backup. Kielyn shares the unglamorous but essential systems—rotating compost, a bear‑proof garbage cage, a simple thunderbox—and why modern conveniences can live alongside primal solutions. As camp chef, she reveals how single‑ingredient freeze‑dried staples make lighter, healthier meals at scale, retaining nutrients and rehydrating fast in subzero temps.Hear about a 73‑day snowshoe traverse from Lake Superior to James Bay, the art of pacing ten‑hour days, and the quiet headspace of walking in winter rhythm. If you care about winter camping, hot tenting, DIY gear, off‑grid living, survival lessons, or planning remote expeditions, this one is packed with field‑tested insight and hard‑earned laughs. If this story moved you or taught you something new, follow the show, leave a quick review, and share it with a friend who loves wild places. Based on his track record, fat chance.   Think of the series as if Jack from Will and Grace and Sex in the City had a baby, raised by Miranda Priestly as a nanny.... Today we talk to the star, writer and creator Jack Tracy, and co-star Jordan Bell. Jack Tracy is a New York based writer, actor, producer, editor, recording artist, and audio engineer.  Following his web series “History”, “Big Law” and “Millennial Memoir” and feature film “Snowflake”, “Danny Will Die Alone” is his first Dekkoo original series.  As a recording artist, he released three LPs and numerous EPs, performing in various Pride festivals and throughout New York City nightlife.   He is also a "dog dad".  Jordan is an actor, singer, and proud Canadian. Trained at the Randolph Academy of the Performing Arts in Toronto, he has performed the classics from Ontario's Stratford Festival to stages across America. His work includes performances in Dear Evan Hansen (Toronto) and Andrew Lloyd Webber's The Wizard of Oz. A key passion: with community-based organizations to empower immigrants and Dreamers. He is a cat dad with a partner.

In this episode, we welcome Donny Dust to the show. He has a reputation for being a “professional caveman”. He is an expert survivalist, primitive skills expert, and retired United States Marine. He owns and operates Paleo Tracks Survival, Colorado's premier survival and wilderness self-reliance school, and has nearly two decades worth of outdoor survival and primitive living experience. He has also written three books: Earthroamer, Scavenger, and Wild Wisdom. He was a contestant on Alone Season 6 - Arctic and was a co-host on the reality show Mud, Sweat, and Beards. In this interview, we discuss why he joined the United States Marine Corps, the difference between combat and non-combat veterans, his thoughts on the current state of the military, why he thinks he was just a tool of the “military industrial complex” while serving in Iraq, his thoughts on God and Jesus, why he still feels like he is on a faith journey, how a heart attack in his late 30s led to him completely reevaluating his life, why he decided to become a survivalist expert, a situation that almost took his life last summer in Utah, a story that he's never shared publicly before, why creativity is our #1 survival skill, the most basic survival skills that we should all have, what all of us should keep in our vehicles and on our person at all times, and much more. Alone is one of the coolest / most engaging shows on TV. 10 people are dropped off in the middle of absolute nowhere with no food or water and told to last as long as they can. They are equipped with a sat-phone to "tap out" when they get to the place where they can't take anymore. The longest lasting human wins 500 thousand dollars! Oh, and they have to film themselves the whole time. No crew. No human contact. Season 10 (on Netflix now) was amazing. Fishing, our passion, was a huge piece of the winner's strategy. Alan Tenta lasted 66 days out there, outlasted everyone, lost 70 + pounds, won half a million dollars, truly felt what suffering is in sub freezing temps in a teepee made of sticks and a tarp, and now he faces his toughest challenge yet; be on the Tackle and Tacos podcast. We've often said there are more ways than one to skin a cat when talking about archery elk hunting strategies. This week Dirk Durham sat down with “Alone” Season 8 TV Series winner and long-time traditional bowhunter, Clay Hays, to compare and contrast elk hunting tactics. Being that he is a traditional archer, and Dirk shoots a compound, their approach to bowhunting elk isn't always that different. We cover from pre-rut archery to post-rut traditional flintlock muzzleloader tactics and have a lot of great nuggets to take away to the field this fall.  Connect with Dirk and Phelps Game Calls Phelps on Instagram, Facebook, and YouTube Shop Phelps MerchSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Today we get to sit down in person and chat with History Channels' Alone Season 8 Winner Clay Hayes. I met Clay a few years prior to him participating in the show while he was primarily doing YouTube and bow building. It was a very enjoyable conversation on how he decided to quit his steady corporate job as a Wildlife Biologist and go out on his own as a YouTuber. Clay is a remarkable woodsman and outdoorsman, we get to know his story and some behind the scenes of the making of the show Alone.
