I do not knoweverything, but I love to research and learn from others and I will always share my ownexperiences with new investigators. In 2016, I decided to start my own business. I originally began working in my bedroom using my dresser and a desk. I had one attorney, Angela Lee in Bend, Oregon. She called me and asked to take a case that I had worked on earlier. I was told the client only wanted me to be the investigator. She believed in me and to this day, we still work cases together. Eventually, I grew out of my bedroom and had to get an office. In 2017, I opened an office with the help of my mother, Linda Gates. I am so grateful for all the opportunities I have been presented with. I have the privilege to work side by side today with some of my most admired attorneys. When I am asked if I enjoy my job; I tell them, this is not a job, it’s my passion and I love it! I feel very grateful for the podcast. I'm very appreciative because I teach in Indianapolis and don’t always feel camaraderie. Sometimes I feel I'm kind of isolated with my ideas or my thoughts or even with an every day things like, "Hmmmm, how could I teach that better?" Just simple things too. So then when I listen to the podcast I feel like I’m suddenly united with my people. And I have a community of people that I didn’t even know were thinking about things far beyond what I had imagined. It makes my world so much bigger. It makes my world so much better. I feel connected. And I’m so grateful! -- MJ Gregory, Owner Pilates 317, Indianapolis, INAll of these episodes, for me, leave me with a sense of hope and that’s a beautiful thing to be left with. Whether that’s because I’ve heard somebody’s story of incredible resilience and triumph. Whether we’re talking about body intuition and agency or empathy and connection and community. I feel like each of these episodes, in some way shape or form, underscores the importance of hope. -- Leslie Bayer, Emerging Pilates Teacher (and Teacher of Teachers), Lodi, CAAbout the ShowWe are officially wrapped! I find this very empowering. (Something Jessica said) It's very simple, complex in practice, but so simple to tell somebody…to empower other people; to tell them “You have to learn the rules and then open your box. Allow that lid to open and experiment and try things on and become the teacher you are, not the teacher I am or the teacher someone else is. I think that is such a beautiful way to approach learning.Yael Japha Trainer, PMA®-CPT, Owner of Terrafly Pilates, Denver, COAbout the ShowDeep inhale. Slow exhale...These next two episodes are like the season's big, deep sigh. They're an opportunity to see and feel what seeds were planted in the last seven months. It has, at times, felt a bit self-indulgent to take soooooo much time to rehash what happened in the podcast this season, yet as we allowed the conversations to flow -- and in the re-listening during production -- it became obvious that standing in all that was shared was and is important.Standing still, looking out to survey what has shaped, inspired, pushed and challenged us is one of the most lacking and most critical acts we can allow ourselves. To just be still. To practice listening; listen for and listen well. To feel into the spaces between what's up front and sharply outlined to what lies beneath. Here are some of our nuggets:Shared sentiment of community and coming togetherTenderness and loving on our students (Brooke Thomas)Listening to our studentsTeach the teachers the rules and then give them the power to open the lid of the box (Jessica Valant)What is your own light and your own dark: seeing your weaknesses (Pete Hamill)Teaching from the place of attending to where students are in their “light and dark” not just pushing our own agendaBeing responsive to people’s trauma and history (Heather Crosby)The parallels between leadership and teaching - leading our students out of themselvesTake a deep breath. Getting to the end and looking back and going: We have absolutely created a season of podcast shows that reflects our vision. Maybe that doesn't feel like a big deal, but to me it just feels like we are totally doing it. We are absolutely100% totally doing the thing we said we were going to do. -- CLWhen you're within the episode, in the conversation, then sort of on to the next it seems like little islands. Chandler is: A true champion of being human, in a human body, in a natural world.Q: What does coming home to your body look like? What I’ve been clicking with more and more lately is something like -- I just call it a practice of sensory stories. It’s like "Hey, think about your favorite smell. Now tell me a story about your favorite smell."Oh, my gosh, I think back to... I was in this bog in Vermont for a field project and we were walking around on this carpet of moss and all around we could smell these pines and these firs. Wow! Relating this story I get in to my body in some fundamental way. That seems to be nice kind of bridge to take to say: "I notice that I feel better when I talk about my favorite sensory experience."Huh? I wonder why that might be. Maybe because your sensory experience is actually how you make sense of the world. It’s a fundamentally physical thing. There are visceral sensations when we get into this juicy sensory stuff. Ummm...I think “come home to your body” is even an interesting phrase because it’s like…you just have to give yourself permission to make your way back.I look at my job as basically let’s create the context in which you feel open to find areas within yourself where you feel particularly comfortable and supported, to bring awareness to and to reconcile and reintegrate those place where you don’t feel comfortable, you don’t feel supported.Maybe there’s been some traumatic experiences in the past. How do we hold in mind the entirety of this person that we’re working with and create some physical experience for them to reconcile that even thought that’s uncomfortable it’s a part of me that’s not something foreign. Even though that’s uncomfortable that’s something I could get to know. And that maybe in that getting to know it becomes more comfortable. About the ShowWhat is the intersection of body, being, and environment? How do we move ourselves and our students into the places that are uncomfortable but inevitably a part of the beautiful whole?Being fully present with your students. Drawing them back into themselves. This was a large part of what James and I chatted with Chandler Stevens about and although the conversation was a collision of a lot of topics we've ruminated on in past shows, it's completely NEW and fresh and inspiring.Oh, and...There's something in his voice that gives you a sense of his steadiness, his curiosity, his dedication to self-knowing, exploration, and being of service. It will draw you in and keep you. This is one of those episodes that leaves you with a deep sense of calm and makes you want to pause. You're going to love it!Listen. Ponder. Question. Meditate on all the juiciness...And SHARE.About the ChandlerChandler Stevens is a somatic coach. He’s developing and organizing a body of work known as Ecosomatics, which revolves around the connections between body, mind, and environment. There was this question as to okay if this body mind spirit thing is happening then where the heck is this spirit element. And I think that where it manifested for me was definitely in that area outside of the comfort zone. I would start to explore a concept that I found fascinating that had nothing to do with exercise proper. And in the exploration of that, if I could make it past the discomfort of nerves or ego or insecurity jumping in, if I could make it over that hurdle and drop in, then I could experience an embodiment of the energy that I believed I saw in Ron and others in my life; an embodiment of being in alignment with my voice as a teacher, my purpose as a human being, my role as a collaborator with my clients. And there is a groundedness that would happen for me that I couldn’t actually define but I know exactly what it feels like. I would say today that I know much better how to access that, but at the time it was kinda like a bonus that would happen and something that maybe I would chase after but I didn’t know how to pull the alignment together, regularly at least.About the ShowWell, it's happened...a collision of the Thinking Pilates and Pilates Unfiltered voices! KABOOM!And it's so perfect because we didn't get all nerdy and geeky and heady. We didn't go down the rabbit hole we could've so easily gone down (SO easily). We didn't go into OVER thinking. Instead we went into FEELING. In this wonderful (and I think quite brilliant and critical conversation) we went straight for the heart. We went all SPIRIT. We went all PRESENCE. We went raw and vulnerable and all the way in to one of the areas of our work as Pilates teachers that sometimes feels tabu to talk explicitly about -- even though we give it plenty (PLENTY...P.L.E.N.T.Y -- yes, all of that is necessary for the appropriate emphasis) lip service. Not this time. Jenna Zaffino is one of our modern teachers who has unabashedly held space for and cultivated heart and spirit in her teaching and in her teaching of teachers. It's part of WHO she is and WHAT she does. She lives it. Breathes it. Shares it. So there really was no more perfect person with whom to THIS conversation. As we begin to bring Season 2 to a close, coming into a deeper place of groundedness and presence is exactly what we need. James and I are sure that this episode is going to touch you, inspire you, and make you sit quietly and wonder: what do I hold in the palm of my hand that FEELS like presence but cannot be seen?Listen. Breath deep. Close your eyes. Put your hand on your heart. Let wonder surface. Let curiosity arise. ...And BE.About JennaJenna is an expert Pilates teacher with over 18 years of experience in movement education. We now have incredible electron microscopes. We have light technology. We have nano technology. We can illuminate cells and tissue in the way we couldn’t say 20 or even 10, 15 years ago. We have computer technology to integrate into all of those. And that’s fantastic! The downside to that is that we have been specializing and by specializing we’ve been separating and separating, and separating…We’ve so many specialist area now…and I’m not getting out of that for a moment, I saying that’s absolutely fantastic, but what needs to happen is that we all need to take a cleansing breath and stop for a moment. And in that stillness just remind ourselves that there is continuity in the human body. Embryology is a wonderful witness to that because when you think about the developing fetus, the developing embryo, at no stage did any mother ask for somebody to velcro on an upper limb, or have an operation to instal a liver. You grew the upper limb, you grew the liver, you grew the spleen, you self-developed, you self-emerged. Because of that everything is continuous and everything is connected. It could not be simpler. And yet people struggle with that idea. It can be useful at times to talk about parts, as long as we bring ourselves back and remind ourselves that there are no parts in the human body, there are no layers. That is a language of convenience. There are no layers in the human body. Everything from the skin, which is the surface right down to the sandy shores of your bones. Your body is continuous from superficial to deep. There are no truer words spoken.About the ShowThe are good people in this world. There are brilliant, kind, and generous people. There are people who make the world a different place, a better place, and who willingly invite others along. This, my friends, is John Sharkey. A meticulous observer of the minute with a breathtaking view the whole. Clinical anatomist, Exercise Physiologist and founding member of the BioTensegrity Interest Group, John is part of a pioneering group of movement specialists and scientists changing the way we understand and talk about the body.In this episode you will laugh (as always), be deeply moved by John's kindness, and maybe even go cross-eyed as we way down the rabbit hole of nerdy awesomeness. Here are some of the highlights:"The norm in human anatomy is individuality. The norm is not that we are all the same. The norm is that we are all different."The body as a continuum; a continuity of tissue formed from three primary components: fats, carbohydrates, and proteinsMini-me cells that eat brussel sprouts (or not)The power of languageHow are we misinforming our teaching with a misunderstanding of termsThe language of "dynamic tension" and the value of whole-body connected/kinetic chain movementBioTensegrity and how we relate to movement and othersSoft-matter physics and the body in 4-dimensionsAnd Phineas Taylor Barnum + Bernarr MacfaddenListen.
