Ever dreamt of shooting a cookbook? How would you feel seeing your work in print? How would you feel if you opened a cookbook and found your photos on large pages staring right back at you?I don't think I've ever met a photographer who didn't want to see their work in print, who wasn't excited by the thought of photographing a cookbook and creating memories not only special for the author of the cookbook but also for themselves. That feeling is pretty priceless, I'll say. And while that feeling might be surreal, the overwhelm of taking on a cookbook project is real. There are so many questions about cookbook photography projects that fill our minds that most of the time, the intimidation of the process itself stops us from signing up for a cookbook project, in spite of wanting it so badly. In this week's episode, Diana Muresan, commercial & editorial food photographer, stylist, blogger and educator based in Canada, who has worked with cookbook authors, national and international food brands and marketing & PR agencies, shares the A-Z process of a cookbook shoot. In our conversation we cover everything from -Landing a cookbook projectQuestions to ask before quoting for the projectPricing for the projectThe styling & photography skills neededThe team setup required…and basically the entire shebang of taking a cookbook shoot project from start to finish. I don't know if you feel so but I think that cookbook shoots are a bit of a mystery because they aren't talked about much or discussed as frequently as commercial food photography projects.Even if there is a mention, there aren't enough details to be able to get a good grip on the entire process. A holistic picture of what this sort of a project entails is somewhat missing in our industry conversations. This episode gives complete insight on what a cookbook project looks like at every single stage. If you've ever wanted to photograph a cookbook or wondered what it is to take on such a project, this episode is for you. Mount Paran Christian School hosts forum on 'deadliest drug in America' Missy Owen, CEO of the Davis Direction Foundation, used crutches as a demonstration during a drug awareness seminar at Mount Paran Christian School. The crutches were shown to be a method of smuggling fentanyl across borders by filling the hollow poles with the drug. Fentanyl, described as the deadliest drug in America, has seen an 800% increase in overdoses among ages 10-19. The Davis Direction Foundation, founded by Missy and Michael Owen after the death of their son from a heroin overdose, partnered with organizations like the DEA and local health departments to educate the community about drug addiction. The seminar highlighted the increasing use of fentanyl and its combination with xylazine, resulting in a surge in overdoses. The speakers emphasized the importance of education and early intervention in combating addiction. We sometimes do not realize how much pressure can come from society and social media. When we take a step back from social media and the societal eye and you ask, what are you really passionate about? what do you really have longevity in working towards? You can learn so much and invest more deeply.Sometimes, we just need to think clearly and give ourselves permission to start small and do the good things that we love for the environment. We don't need to keep questioning ourselves just because of what others dictate, but we need to work together to make an impact. In this episode, Katie Boue shares her journey and realizations as she went through transformations in her work. Many companies are shifting their employees to working remotely, allowing many people the flexibility to live more of a nomadic lifestyle. This has led the 30-plus day stays to become the fastest growing category on Airbnb right now. But what are the pros and cons? And is it profitable? How can you earn a living from your passion for the written word? When I started as a writer, it seemed exceptionally difficult to earn a good living from the written word. That's probably because I was trying to make a living as a journalist in Ireland, and as a pretty small country, there were few opportunities. But I quickly discovered that my experiences weren't unique. It's pretty tricky to earn a living from the written word. Or at least it was up until a few years ago.Now there are a variety of platforms and online tools that make it easier for writers to connect with readers and their audience. You can start a blog, you can build a following on Twitter, you can self-publish a book, and then you can create a companion course. There are a plethora of opportunities for writers today. It depends on where your passion lies, but finding time for all these projects and balancing creative work with earning a living can be challenging. In this week's podcast, I caught up with Adam Davidson. He's the founder of Planet Money and a former writer for publications like The New Yorker. He's also the author of the rather excellent book, The Passion Economy: The New Rules for Thriving in the 21st Century, which I recommend you check out. In the book, Adam profiles eight rules that people who are passionate about something can use and apply to earn a good living from whatever takes their interest, including writers. In this episode, we discuss:His next creative project and how it's more of a passion projectThe tension between doing something that pays the bills and doing something to build a businessCreating something just for you that you want to release out into the worldAnd what this scenario looks like for AdamResources:Adam on TwitterPlanet MoneyAdam on NPRSupport the show
The medical establishment has finally realized that if you want to know how patients feel about their lives, you need to speak to them! And they recognize that our patient experience is VALUABLE, so they're willing to pay for our time. But it can feel like you're only there to share your complaints and problems. And you are more than your health condition! My guests today work at Merakoi, an agency that enables healthcare companies to collaborate with patient experts and their communities across multiple diseases and geographies. For me, the key word in that description is collaborate. Merakoi recognizes that patient advocates are highly skilled professionals with lived disease experience. So by getting to know their community, Merakoi ensures patients are enabled to deliver real-life insights and creative solutions to the projects that they work on. It's not just about sharing your problems, you get the opportunity to bring your skills across the entire product development lifecycle! I think Merakoi is offering a uniquely human-centric way for patient advocates to work with health solution providers. So I'm proud that they are working closely with Patients Getting Paid, posting many of their opportunities with the PGP Community. It's another reason to join today! In this episode:Where the idea for Merakoi came fromKathy's early experiences of patient advocacy, and why working with Merakoi is different How patient experts are recruited, and how they are selected for each projectThe big question! How much do patient experts get paid?Details of Merakoi opportunities inside the Patients Getting Paid communityFull notes and resources at https://patientsgettingpaid.com/blog/getting-patients-paid-merakoi

Today Ted speaks with Trisha Isabey, Creative Director and Principal Designer at Isabey Interiors, an award winning design company based in Kelowna, BC specializing in both residential and commercial designs. The mom of two has loved design for as long as she can remember, but it was only in October 2012 when she established her own company. She sees her background as a professional stockbroker and financial planner as having paved the way for her current career, when her business acumen finally caught up with her passion for interior design.Today, Isabey Interiors has grown into a team of 27 and is now ranked as the largest interior design firm in British Columbia. Trisha has since expanded into offering a furniture and home decor store called Furnish by Isabey Interiors, and a gift box business called Furnish for You.Trisha is a regular columnist in Reno & Decor magazines, and the team's work is regularly featured in both local and national design and lifestyle publications.Topics Discussed: Why Trisha got into interior design and her experience starting her own businessTrisha's core values and inspiring her team to adopt themLessons learned from her husband Kevin, who leads a team of 500The power of habit and sticking to the processThe mentality of the youth towards failureStaying on top of client wants between Trisha's four companiesWorking with draftsmen in KelownaAchieving synergy between different departments on a projectThe difference between a good designer and a bad designerWhether Trisha imagined that she would have the success she has todayLessons learned in her second marriageHow Trisha mentors her kidConnect with Trisha Isabey Interiors:Website: https://www.isabeyinteriors.com/Instagram: isabeyinteriorsFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/isabeyinteriorsTwitter: https://twitter.com/TrishaIsabeyYouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCzsgl0apA6EnhDIKaVz2vRQConnect with Build Magazine:Website - https://www.buildmagazine.com/Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/buildmags/?hl=enFacebook - https://www.facebook.com/BuildMags/Key Quotes by Trisha:My core values are kindness and respect. I don't believe in getting things in a way that hurts somebody. The process is how you're going to get there. You have to stop focusing so much on the goal, because if you know what the goal is, then it's all about building a daily framework to get to the goal, and you will get there. Stop worrying about how fast it's going to be because you have no control over that.I don't think you can be a perfectionist when you are a visionary. Otherwise, you wait for your vision to be perfect and it's never going to be perfect. It doesn't matter how good your builder is. If your design sucked or wasn't properly planned, you're in trouble.

Let's redefine mental illness as a different state of consciousness that can move us toward a spiritual life. Depression, suicidal ideation, paranoia, and schizophrenia contain a set of experiences that can teach us and reveal aspects of life and of ourselves that we wouldn't otherwise see. Ricky is a Life, Spirituality and Wellness Coach. He writes about spirituality, philosophy, mindfulness, meditation, and psychology in his blog Mind That Ego.Quotes to remember: “If we can embrace suffering and not crave happiness and not be overly resistant toward difficult feelings, that's going to lead us down a fulfilling path.” “Spirituality is not a hobby. It's a way of being.” “You are not a product of what goals you achieve.” “Ultimately, our truest essence is beyond what we can identify with.” “You are not the center of the universe, but you are the universe.” “Depression is a great teacher.” Takeaways:It's common to link being scientific with being atheist/cynical toward spiritualityThe journey of spirituality is bitter at first, then like sweet nectarWith suffering, the only way out is throughUnresolved grief and sadness contribute greatly to our sufferingOur spirituality evolves in spirals, and each stage incorporates all previous stagesSelf-transcendence is what lies beyond the ego and beyond Western individualismYou can be spiritual and have goalsThe ego will constantly try to intrude and impose, even when you are engaging in a passion projectThe ego both downplays and aggrandizes the truthWhat we identify with can hold us back and keep us stuck, even if it's supposedly a good identityWhen our Shadow side (our undesirable side) is not faced, it will come out as projection onto othersWe are afraid of not only our Shadow but also our power, potential, and creativityMental illness can be the beginning of spiritual awakening; nonstandard states of consciousness are not necessarily insanityOur potential is far beyond our sensesCuriosity is the antidote to fearWhat you'll learn:Ricky's introduction to spirituality through sufferingHow he talked himself through the suffering of mental illness to a place of wholenessOur understanding of Maslow's hierarchy of needs isn't the full picture of what Maslow intendedAbout Ricky's relationship with goal-settingHow our concept of our identity shifts as we growWhat envy can teach us about ourselvesMentioned on the podcast: https://www.mindthatego.com/Maslow's hierarchy and self-transcendenceSpiral DynamicsEckhart TolleDr. Leanne WhitneyKen WilberCrazy Wise documentaryStanislav Grof and Holotropic BreathworkLinks:FacebookMediumYoutubeInstagram

Andy Sewell’s first book The Heath was a winner of the International Photobook Award 2012 and is included in Martin Parr’s The Photobook: A History Vol. III. His work is found in private and public collections including The V&A Museum, The MAST Foundation, The Museum of London, Columbia University Art Collection, Eric Franck Collection, The Hyman Collection and the National Media Museum. He was born in East London and grew up in the commuter belt north of the city, a place part rural and part suburban. He now lives in East London again. His work explores the permeable quality of the boundaries we put between things. The Heath is about the paradox of a place managed to feel wild. Something Like a Nest explores the gap between the countryside as an idea, somewhere often imagined and depicted as an escape from modernity, and the messier, enmeshed landscape we find there. His latest book, Known and Strange Things Pass, just published by Skinnerboox, looks at the cables carrying the Internet across the Atlantic and costal locations they link. Exploring, in these places where the digital network is concentrated, a literal and metaphorical entwining of worlds we think of as separate - the ocean and the Internet, the close and the distant, the physical and the virtual, what we think of as natural with the cultural and technological. Andy’s work is defined by the relationships created between pictures. It is driven by a fascination with the contradictory quality of seeing – the feeling that as we look closer at things they become more lucid, more themselves, and yet, and at the same time, more entangled, unknowable, and mysterious. On episode 139, Andy discusses, among other things:His new book, Known and Strange Things PassHaving two bodiesThe importance of chanceNoticing what’s thereResearching the projectThe feeling of embodiment from being in waterHis Previous book, Something Like a NestFirst book, The HeathReferenced:Hyperobjects by Timothy MortonSeamus HeaneyHiroshi Sugimoto Website | Instagram | Twitter“As I grew up, I was taught the more closely you see something, the more you know about it. In late 2017, Gabriel Jimenez was approached by the Venezuelan presidency and asked to create a national digital currency, the Petro. Although very much against the regime, Gabriel saw this as a chance to save his country which was on the brink of economic collapse. A new currency that would move freely over an open network, like Bitcoin. And the government would not be able to control it. So he agreed. Things didn’t go as Gabriel had envisioned. Months later, Gabriel almost paid with his life when he was held at gunpoint by military guards in the President’s palace. He was accused of being a traitor to the government and was forced to hand over the project, which still hasn’t taken off. Last year he fled to the US to avoid being arrested and has since been granted asylum status. He is passionate about cryptocurrency and his country, and is working on a new way to combine the two. From the safety of the US, Gabriel is finally able to share his side of the story and wants to set the record straight on why he did what he did.Topics covered in this episode:Gabriel’s background growing up in VenezuelaGabriel’s return to Venezuela from the USVenezuela in the pre-Chavez daysLiving in Venezuela during Chavez’s ruleThe introduction of crypto to VenezuelaThe Maduro regime and how things got worse from thereWhen the government turned on Gabriel and his teamKnowing the risks of this projectThe current state of the PetroHow things could have gone differently so that Petro could have workedEpisode links: The Coder and the Dictator - Gabriel's first interview with the NY TimesThe Petro WebsiteThe Petro - WikipediaGabriel signing the documents on Live TVGabriel Jimenez TwitterThe Social UsThis episode is hosted by Sebastien Couture & Sunny Aggarwal. In today's episode we speak to Samira Arjdal, an environmentalist at heart and the first African woman to have participated in WAVE, the world's largest e-mobility rally in Switzerland. Together with her partner Silvia Brutschin, Samira organises a similar event annually in Morocco called RIVE Maroc. Our interview with Samira was short but inspiring. Stay tuned to hear about: RIVE Maroc and the goal behind the projectThe different partnerships the team has set up to create the necessary charging infrastructure without spending money on their ownHow they are using the rally and a partnership to donate refurbished laptops to schools How you can participate in RIVE Maroc, whether or not you have an electric vehicle And so much more. Almost no businesses "just appear overnight" and most have a significant back story about how they got where they are today. Larissa Miller, the founder of PI Yoga Pants, has just that type of story. She had the idea to make a pair of more comfortable yoga pants in 2016 while traveling through Bali. The following day she found a seamstress through a conversation with a taxi driver, and has since dedicated 100% of herself to turning that idea into a global clothing brand that makes comfortable clothing for women of all shapes and sizes. In this interview she discusses the experiences that she's had on her journey to turn a $500 investment into a 4,000 piece quarterly order by having a vision appropriately following that vision as the business grows. As if that wasn't enough, she also donates a percentage of all her orders to Set Turtle conservation and donates her time restoring the reef while she's there. In this episode you'll hear some of the mindset shifts that you must make as a growing entrepreneur in order to transition from your "cool idea" to a profitable, global brand. We'll cover the following as you listen: Where the idea of PI Yoga Pants beganHow setting a goal, and dedicating 100% of yourself to a projectThe fears that most new business owners have when first startingThe power of simple conversations and connectionsOur goal in this episode is to explain the back story behind PI Yoga Pants to give you inspiration in your own business. Getting to the end and looking back and going: We have absolutely created a season of podcast shows that reflects our vision. Maybe that doesn't feel like a big deal, but to me it just feels like we are totally doing it. We are absolutely100% totally doing the thing we said we were going to do. -- CLWhen you're within the episode, in the conversation, then sort of on to the next it seems like little islands. To look back on it and be like that told a cohesive story, there was a thing that happened there and that season fits into the greater story and the story yet untold but it also lives on it's own. Why are you a photographer? DAVID: Well, that's very simple. The why is . . . that I want to love on people, I want to have influence in their lives, and I have the excuse of carrying a camera. I'm a terrible writer--I'm ADD and dyslexic as most artists are--and I compose terrible letters. But I think I can tell a story in pictures.
