What if friendship is less about being understood and more about the willingness to truly know another person? This sermon reflects on Christian friendship as a practice of attention, one that honors full humanity rather than convenience or similarity. Drawing from Philippians 2:19–22, the message explores Paul's description of Timothy as a model of friendship shaped by humility, curiosity, and shared concern. In a culture that rewards self-expression and recognition, this sermon invites listeners to consider a different path: friendship rooted in seeking to know rather than striving to be known. Part of the Koinonia: The Five Marks of Friendship series.

The announcement that the Kingdom of God has arrived in Jesus is fundamental to our understanding of the cross because it is the proclaimation of regime change. As we look to conclude this series, we need to examine how God 'becoming King in Jesus' overthrows, disarms and defeats the existing powers which hold creation and humanity in bondage. What does God's rule and reign look like in the world and how is the church to exist in the light of it?

What does it truly mean to live a 'cross-shaped life'? This powerful message invites us into the radical concept of cruciformity—not just accepting the cross as our source of salvation, but embracing it as the very shape and form of our daily existence. Drawing from Philippians 1:18-26 and the extraordinary story of Desmond Doss, the conscientious objector who saved 75 lives at Hacksaw Ridge, we're challenged to see that following Jesus isn't about adopting a moral code or checklist. It's about entering into His narrative of selfless love, willing service, and trusting God even when circumstances scream otherwise. Paul writes from prison—a place of suffering—yet overflows with joy. How? Because joy isn't found in comfort, pleasure, or worldly success, but in communion with Christ as we live out His story. When we choose to disadvantage ourselves to advantage others, when we willingly take on the world's shame for the sake of the gospel, when we 'take up our cross daily,' we discover something counterintuitive: the resurrection power of the Holy Spirit flows most abundantly through cruciform living. This isn't about earning salvation—it's about growth in the life we've already been given. The challenge before us is clear: Will we live the Roman way of self-advancement and power, or will we embrace the Jesus way of humble service, trusting that our honor comes not in this world's approval, but in standing before Him face to face?Chapter 1: Introduction to Cruciformity0:00 - 7:00The sermon introduces the concept of cruciformity—living a cross-shaped life that mirrors Jesus' pattern of self-giving love and servant leadership.Chapter 2: The Cross-Shaped Life in Philippians7:00 - 14:00We explore how Paul models cruciformity from prison, finding joy in suffering through communion with Christ rather than in worldly circumstances.Chapter 3: Paul's Choice: Glory or Service14:00 - 21:00Paul demonstrates cruciformity by choosing to remain in suffering to serve the Philippians rather than departing to be with Christ, which would be far better.Chapter 4: Bringing Cruciformity Into All of Life21:00 - 26:00We are challenged to bring the cruciform life into every area—marriage, work, recreation, and relationships—trusting God to supply the Spirit's power for this impossible calling. Keywords

This message is especially relevant as we are currently exploring the nature of God as revealed in various atonement theories. The first talk is intended not only to challenge the view that God, as revealed by Jesus, is a “God of wrath,” but also to expose that idea as a pernicious lie and the very antithesis of God's cruciform character.

Because the Colossians have received Jesus, St. Paul exhorts them to walk in Him and remain rooted in the faith He has established in them. They must not be taken captive by philosophies that are only manmade traditions, for these are not from Christ. He is the One in whom the fullness of deity dwells bodily, and He has filled His Church. In Holy Baptism, He has incorporated His Church into His burial and resurrection so that we receive the triumph that He has won over all powers through His cross.  Rev. Jeremiah Johnson, pastor at Glory of Christ Lutheran Church in Plymouth, MN, joins host Rev. Timothy Appel to study Colossians 2:6-15.  To learn more about Glory of Christ Lutheran, visit gloryofchrist.org “Letters from Prison” is a mini-series on Sharper Iron that studies Philippians, Colossians, and Philemon. Even when Paul was imprisoned for the sake of Christ, the Word of God remained unbound. The apostle's letters from prison still fill us with the same joy that his chains could never silence. Sharper Iron, hosted by Rev. Timothy Appel, looks at the text of Holy Scripture both in its broad context and its narrow detail, all for the sake of proclaiming Christ crucified and risen for sinners. Two pastors engage with God's Word to sharpen not only their own faith and knowledge, but the faith and knowledge of all who listen. Submit comments or questions to: listener@kfuo.org

Seven words of love. What did Jesus say when he was on the cross? First, he prayed for forgiveness for those who crucified him. Second, he offered a promise of paradise to a thief. Then he saw his mom and his best friend. As he saved the world, Jesus took time to take care of his family. This is the way. Walk in it! Message based on John 19:25-27.Quotes: Duane Brooks: In some ways, the church begins with one act of obedience to God's work in the world.Fleming Rutledge: The saying is not only, I would say, I soften it, about being nice to your mother. It is about the new community that comes into being through the power of Jesus. It is cruciform in shape.Stanley Hauerwas: It's hard to remember that Jesus did not come to make us safe, but rather to make us disciples, citizens of God's new age, a kingdom of surprise.A. W. Tozer:  The old cross slew men; the new cross entertains them. The old cross condemned; the new cross amuses. The old cross destroyed confidence in the flesh; the new cross encourages it.  Duane Brooks: We can't have Jesus without the cross.Kierkegaard: Jesus never was looking for admirers. He came to find followers.John Stott: The Cross is the blazing fire at which the flame of our love is kindled, but we have to get near enough for its sparks to fall on us.Arthur Tappan Pierson: To a true child of God, the invisible bond that unites all believers to Christ is far more tender, and lasting, and precious; and, as we come to recognize and realize that we are all dwelling in one sphere of life in Him, we learn to look on every believer as our brother, in a sense that is infinitely higher than all human relationships. This is the one and only way to bring disciples permanently together. All other plans for promoting the unity of the Church have failed.Mother Teresa: The problem with the world is that we draw the circle of our family too small. #Jesus #cross #community #forgiveness #discipleship #compassionTo discover more messages of hope go to tallowood.org/sermons/.Follow us on Instagram, X, and YouTube @tallowoodbc.Follow us on FaceBook @tallowoodbaptist
