Welcome to Celebrate Poe, Episode 243 ˜- Dangerous to Know.  This My name is George Bartley, and this is the first of three episodes about Lord George Byron.  A few episodes ago, I talked about the love of Lord Byron and his dog - and hoped I got across the point that Lord Byron was a fascinating person.  Then it struck me - it might be a good idea to talk a bit more about Lord Byron because he had such a strong influence on the young Poe.  John Allan certainly did not like Byron and thought he was immoral - and Byron did seem to cultivate a bad boy image, but you can't really understand Poe without having at least a basic knowledge of Byron. - perhaps the most influential of the English Romantics. The young Poe often almost slavishly imitated Lord Byron in many of his early writings. For example, Mr. Poe's first major poem was greatly influenced by Lord Byron.  Poe's story, Tamerlane, is about a leader who achieves power and forgets about his true love - for some reason - probably because of Poe's admiration of Lord Byron - Poe calls Tamerlane's love - Ada - the same name as Lord Byron's daughter, Ada Lovelace.  Poe seemed to treat Lord Byron almost like an idol at first - then later in his career, Poe found his own voice as a writer.

Few lives from history can have contained as many strange and exciting strands as that of Lord Byron's, whose story reflects the great dramas of the Napoleonic era. A vampiric hero of devilish charisma; a martyr for liberty, a licentious lothario; Byron's cultural and literary impact cannot be underestimated. The remarkable course of his life, and his mercurial nature can in part be explained by the dark events of his childhood, and the outlandish history of his own family. Born with a club foot - his “satanic mark” - to “Mad Jack” Byron, a former gigolo dogged by incest and financial ruin, and an unpredictable mother, a strange curse seemed to lie over the family. Impoverished before the inheritance of his title and a romantic ruin in Nottinghamshire, the plump and provincial boy would finally find solace at school and university, where he transformed into the glamorous rake he would become. There too would he discover the dubious sexual passions that would haunt his life… Join Tom and Dominic as they discuss the diabolic history of the Byron family, and the young Byron's birth, troubled upbringing, and controversial adolescence. *The Rest Is History LIVE in 2024* Tom and Dominic are back onstage this summer, at Hampton Court Palace in London! In this final episode of Lady Killers, Lucy Worsley and Dr Rosalind Crone look back and discuss the last four cases and the issues and themes they share. Together they re-examine two of Britain's most notorious serial killers, Amelia Dyer who's thought to have killed hundreds of babies and children and Mary Ann Cotton who murdered three of her husbands and numerous children and step-children. Over in the United States they look back at Hannah Mary Tabbs, who killed her lover and back in London delve into the sad case of Esther Lack, the mother who murdered three of her own children. Lucy and Ros dig deeper into the social issues and circumstances that helped create these murderesses. They look back at an era when newspapers were booming and examine the part the press played in shaping the stories of these women and how they were presented to a scandal hungry public. With that in mind they chat through the new discoveries sweeping through society in terms of toxicology and new understandings around mental health. Finally they scrutinise all eight cases and ask, what has changed today that could have made a difference? Producer: Alex Baxter Sound design: Chris Maclean A StoryHunter production for BBC Radio 4

The band is Dead or Alive, and the singer was, of course, the sensational Pete Burns. Up for discussion is the band's third album, "Mad, Bad, and Dangerous to Know," from 1987. Part 1: Background Brian goes into the history of the band and its many members during the early years, focusing on one in particular-- much to Sarah's annoyance. Sarah responds with some information on the production company responsible for this album's sound-- the trio known as Stock Aitken Waterman, who were behind Dead or Alive's biggest hit, "You Spin Me Round (Like a Record)" in 1985, as well as a slew of other 80s chart toppers. Part 2: Personal History Did Sarah actually own a store-bought copy of this cassette, or was this one of those "special" versions given to her by a friend? What obsolete practice did Brian engage in to get a copy of the first single? Part 3: Track by Track Each song on the album's first side is discussed, track by track. What is Brian's theory about the types of Dead or Alive songs? Which song's video shocked Sarah? Find out which songs they agree are hits and which, if any, are misses.
