Send us a textWelcome to Celebrate Poe - Episode 295 - John Allan's WillOn March 27, 1834, John Allan died of a lingering illness of unknown origin. He was undoubtedly completely utterly ignorant that he would not be remembered for his money - but because of the cast-off ward he had despised. His business partner was Charles Ellis, and Ellis's son Thomas (citing Louisa Allan as his source) wrote in 1881 that shortly before Allan's death, Edgar had suddenly appeared at the Allan family home, demanding to see his former guardian. Thomas Ellis claimed Mrs. Allan tried to turn him away, but Poe desperately barged his way into Allan's sickroom, only to have the ailing but still unforgiving man chase the unwelcome visitor out with his cane. The story cannot be totally confirmed, but it would be depressingly in character for both men to end their relationship with such a mixture of bitterness, melodrama and even farce.I would also like to discuss the actual text of the will - not surprisingly, it is typical legalese for the 19th century - but is not that long - as far as wills go - about 1,000 words.Thank you for experiencing Celebrate Poe.

And even if some of this information is familiar to you, stay with the Ghost of Mr. Poe and myself for what ultimately is a very sad story.Thank you for experiencing Celebrate Poe.

Although - to my knowledge - he never directly encouraged his son to be a writer - I believe that Poe was highly influenced - in a negative way - by the frequent conflicts with the man who called himself Poe's father. So I'd like to talk about his life, as well as his death with some help from the Ghost of Edgar Poe.

Welcome to Celebrate Poe, Episode 243 ˜- Dangerous to Know. This My name is George Bartley, and this is the first of three episodes about Lord George Byron. A few episodes ago, I talked about the love of Lord Byron and his dog - and hoped I got across the point that Lord Byron was a fascinating person. Then it struck me - it might be a good idea to talk a bit more about Lord Byron because he had such a strong influence on the young Poe. John Allan certainly did not like Byron and thought he was immoral - and Byron did seem to cultivate a bad boy image, but you can't really understand Poe without having at least a basic knowledge of Byron. - perhaps the most influential of the English Romantics. The young Poe often almost slavishly imitated Lord Byron in many of his early writings. For example, Mr. Poe's first major poem was greatly influenced by Lord Byron. Poe's story, Tamerlane, is about a leader who achieves power and forgets about his true love - for some reason - probably because of Poe's admiration of Lord Byron - Poe calls Tamerlane's love - Ada - the same name as Lord Byron's daughter, Ada Lovelace. Poe seemed to treat Lord Byron almost like an idol at first - then later in his career, Poe found his own voice as a writer.
