This month we are re-releasing a podcast in support of our upcoming exhibition on British Girls Fashion. Please join us again next month for a new episode. In this episode, we will be looking at the new, different, and exciting range of teenage fashions in the 1950s and 1960s. This was a particularly exciting period for teenagers, as they began to break away from their parents' generation to develop their own distinct style and interests. Vogue stated that there was a “Youthquake” in the sixties, due to the overwhelming popularity of revolutionary new styles and trends brought in by teenagers. But why did the concept of the teenager develop? What changes were happening in society that brought about these changes in fashion? What were the most iconic clothes and why were they so popular? --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/girlspeak/support

The Blue Jays and their fans are now firmly into the process of getting to know a number of young players acquired at last month's trade deadline, so it's time to think about first impressions. Joey Loperfido has struggled, Davis Schneider still looks lost, and Addison Barger has yet to find his footing, but Will Wagner had a loud debut, and we've seen good things so far from Spencer Horwitz and—to an extent—Leo Jiménez as well.Plus! The bullpen has its own share of new faces, Bowden Francis has rejoined the chat, Vlad's hit streak has ended (but the need for him to get a new contract hasn't), and a whole lot more.

Simon Smith – Curator/ Curatorial & Accessioning National Film and Sound Archive of Australia The National Film and Sound Archive's (NFSA) major digital exhibition Radio 100 launches a new chapter with Youthquake, which charts the rise of radio as a vital force in the emergence of youth culture in Australia. Youthquake highlights the transistor as the first go-anywhere form of media, enabling teenagers of the 1960s to leave the family wireless in the living room and become the first generation to personalise their listening experience. It was, says NFSA curator Simon Smith, ‘a pocket-sized rebellion against the conformity of gathering around a single device'. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Ahead of the Polish parliamentary elections on 15 October 2023, political campaigns are running at full steam. From coupling the election with a referendum, to employing an increasingly sharp rhetoric against Poland's neighbours Germany, and, as of recently, Ukraine, the ruling Law and Justice party is eager to mobilize voters and maintain power. One group could play a decisive role in changing the future power dynamics: ZOiS researchers Félix Krawatzek and Hakob Matevosyan have surveyed Polish 18 to 34 year olds on current social issues. From how political identifications and attitudes towards current issues like migration and the war in Ukraine translate into voting intentions, to how family relations and intergenerational dynamics influence perceptions of political representation: The discussions of the finding reveals Poland's youth is highly motivated to vote and noticeably turning away from bigger parties and towards the right-wing Confederation party, especially among men.

Experts say young people are frustrated by rising house prices, stagnant wage growth, and political inaction on climate and social justice issues. Could this demographic determine the next Australian election?
Africa's population growth in the last 50 years has been unprecedented. By mid-century, the continent will make up a quarter of the global population, compared to one-tenth in 1980. By the end of the century, the proportion could be as much as 40 per cent. This is a mega-trend that should not be ignored. Africa's youth is the most striking aspect of its demography. As the rest of the world ages, and the population of many countries starts to shrink, almost 60 per cent of Africa's population is younger than 25 years old. This 'youthquake' will have immense consequences for the social, economic and political reality in Africa. Edward Paice is the author of "Youthquake: Why Africa's Demography Should Matter to the World." He joins us on the #SWYSI sofa to discuss his book, which presents a detailed, nuanced analysis of the varied demography of Africa. He rejects the fanciful over-optimism of some commentators and doom-laden prophecies of others, while scrutinising received wisdom, and carefully considering the ramifications of the youthquake for Africa and the world. Throughout this project, we learned about the stages we exist on - and what that means for the ways people think, how they behave, and what they are collectively imagine will be the next era of New York City. One of the most special moments of the human experience is coming together to create ephemeral experiences. In the last episode of Ensemble, we reflect on our time studying New York's revival and its relation to performing art, and discuss the enduring signals that point to what may be coming next.
Ensemble reimagines the places we visit and the people we interact with through the lens of performance, and reflects on what it means to "perform." In the second Director's cut, Jasmin summarizes the key learnings from both the production and analysis sides of Ensemble and what we expect to come in the post-COVID renaissance based on our research.
Arguably one of the most magical and ephemeral forms of performance art in New York City is street performance.. from buskers at subway stations, to jazz bands at city parks, and even well-dressed fashionistas on Broadway. With venues closed during the pandemic, city streets became a common ground for any kind of artistry. As restrictions lifted many of these performances persisted, offering an optimistic accompaniment to the city's reopening.
The last stop is our favorite borough, Brooklyn (yes.. Jasmin is biased). We set out to study human interaction in various tableaus that feel more personal and intimate, like your favorite neighborhood bar or a casual rooftop kickback with friends. The pandemic forced us to find new ways to connect and socialize - often through technology. As we chat through how we're feeling socializing in person again, we also acknowledge the impact of social media and digital stages. Artists had to adapt their craft to virtual stages and learn new ways to engage an audience. After spending two years connecting with friends via Instagram and Facetime calls, Montana recalls the first IRL performance she attended this summer and how anxious it felt to be around strangers. As the flood gates open further, we reflect on the challenges we've experienced as we emerge from lockdown.. and the need for more vulnerable conversation that will allow us to critically acknowledge that we are forever changed.
We head west and travel along the High Line to visit new institutions who are reinventing what performance looks like in the 21st century. We stop by The Shed in Hudson Yards to meet with Dupe Ajayi, Senior Strategist in charge of Intersectional Marketing & Partnerships. Dupe shares more about her role, what it means to be a New York institution, and how recent cultural movements are challenging the performing arts industry to be more accessible and welcoming to intersectional audiences. As we learn more about how performance can be reinterpreted, the lines between stage and audience continue to blur. Tucked away between art galleries in Chelsea is the pseudo-hotel theatrical venue under the name The Mckittrick, better known for its immersive show Sleep No More. The interactive production fosters a new experience for audiences and artists alike, leaving audiences puzzled and questioning the notion of what a "stage" is. As we continue to break the traditions that separate art forms and audiences, we recognize how this dynamic might present itself beyond the theatre... in real life settings like restaurants, parties and dance floors.
Anyone who's spent a night out in New York knows that the real pulse of the city is found on a different kind of stage: the dance floor. Yes, we heavily leaned into this episode during our research... and we absolutely whipped out our field mics at Paul's Casablanca. As the city reopened, we couldn't wait to get back to our fav nightlife stapes. We made our way through downtown Manhattan, seeking out caricatures of what performance might look like outside the theatre. Cocktails and film camera in hand, we observed the cool kids make their grand re-entrance into society... from exclusive lounges to candle lit dinners.
Our adventure starts on the Upper West Side, home to beloved and prestigious arts institutions like Lincoln Center and The New York City Ballet. As pandemic restrictions lifted, many institutions celebrated their long-awaited return to the stage with traditional stories. While we crave the familiar, we also recognize that we've grown and changed a lot in the past year. As the curtain rises and shows begin once again, we take a look at how audiences and performers are returning the stage.. and start to imagine where those stages could exist outside the walls of a theatre.

Today's show delves deep into motherhood, how it's intergenerational and we are birthed from the mothers before us. Their love, their thoughts, their dreams live on in us. I am thrilled to have Nandana Dev Sen on my show. Nandana Dev Sen is an award-winning actor, writer, and child-rights activist. Daughter of the world renowned economist and philosopher Amartya Sen and the famous Indian poet, author, and academic Nabaneeta Dev Sen, Nandana was destined to pursue a career in the arts. After graduating Phi Beta Kappa from Harvard University (where she won the John Harvard Scholarship and Elizabeth Agassiz Prize each year) and studying filmmaking at the USC School of Cinema-Television, she worked as a book editor, a screenwriter, a script doctor, a poetry translator, a short film maker, and just for fun, as Princess Jasmine in Disneyland. Nandana grew up in India, England, and America, and has acted in over 20 feature films from all three continents (and in multiple languages). She is the Ambassador for Child Protection for Save the Children India. Nandana has worked closely with children and grown-ups at UNICEF, RAHI (India's first organization for survivors of child sexual abuse), Apne Aap (ends sex-trafficking by providing education and preventing intergenerational prostitution), and Operation Smile (transforms lives of children with cranio-facial deformities), as an Ambassador and advocate for child protection. In 2019, Nandana was awarded the Last Girl Champion Award for her campaign against human trafficking and child abuse, and her tireless fight to empower marginalized girl children. Nandana is the author of six children's books, In My Heart (Penguin Random House, 2019), The Monkey Who Wanted to Fly (Italian: La scimmietta che voleva volare, Fetrinelli Kids, 2018), Talky Tumble of Jumble Farm (Penguin Random House, 2017), Not Yet! (Tulika Books, 2017), Kangaroo Kisses (Otter-Barry Books, 2016), and Mambi and the Forest Fire (Puffin, 2016), as well as Youthquake, a fiction series for young adults (published in The Wire, The Telegraph, and Youth Ki Awaaz). Nandana‘s first book Kangaroo Kisses was selected by 320+ UK nurseries as a “Book of Excellence”, and her interactive workshops have been loved by more than 30,000 young people, in person, across the world. She frequently writes for newspapers and journals, and has edited and co-authored a bilingual book of her translations of her mother Nabaneeta Dev Sen's Bengali poetry, Make Up Your Mind. Her latest book, Acrobat, is a collection of her mother's poems translated from Bengali by Nandana and is published by Archipelago Books. Nandana lives with her husband John Makinson and daughter Meghla with homes in New York, London, and Kolkata. She loves to eat, bike, rhyme, dance, and argue. Ensemble is a narrative-style podcast documenting the re-opening of New York City in 2021 through the lens of performing arts. In the first Director's Cut, Montana introduces the origins of the Ensemble project and gives you a glimpse at what you'll hear this season. We'll be dropping two episodes per week. You can choose your own adventure and click through episodes based on your interest, but we recommend listening to the season from the top, in order, as the episodes naturally flow into each other and follow the progression of the city reopening.
Emerging from the pandemic, Jasmin and Montana sit down for drinks at the Crosby Street Hotel and chat through what's next for New York City, what's happening in the performing arts world that could inform the post-pandemic renaissance, and how we might marry our love for the arts with our strategy skillsets to embark on a new research project dubbed 'Ensemble."

Harmen Meinsma is fotograaf. AMYTHYST KIAH is a professed Southern Gothic, alt-country blues singer/songwriter based in Johnson City, Tennessee. Her commanding stage presence is only matched by her raw and powerful vocals—a deeply moving, hypnotic sound that stirs echoes of a distant and restless past. Accoutered interchangeably with banjo, acoustic guitar, or a full band (Her Chest of Glass), Kiaht’s toolbox is augmented by her scholarship of African-American roots music. Provocative and coolly fierce, her ability to cross the boundaries of blues and old-time through reinterpretation is groundbreaking and simply unforgettable. She has two new releases this year: a solo project on Nonesuch Records produced by Joe Henry and Songs of Our Native Daughter the new roots music supergroup featuring her, Rhiannon Giddens (Carolina Chocolate Drops) Allison Russell (Birds of Chicago), and Leyla McCalla (Carolina Chocolate Drops). JOE ROBINSON is considered uniquely gifted as a virtuoso guitarist and singer/songwriter. He walks a tightrope between the instrumental music that has put him in the spotlight and a unique fusion of vocally based rock, blues, jazz, and R&B that is entirely his own. Born in the backwoods of Temagog, on the mid-north coast of New South Wales, Australia, his six-string ability and compositional insight have already earned him a worldwide following. Robinson’s talents were further recognized by Guitar Player magazine as part of a cover story entitled “Youthquake 2017: Ten Mind-Blowing Young Guitarists.” He'll perform songs from his new album 'Undertones'. The Sober Majority and why Biden's resurrection and surge should surprise no one. Bernie's "revolution" was always fueled by Clinton disgust and a foolish dependency on a Youthquake fantasy. Adam Idah's spectacular hat-trick for Norwich was a glimmer of the old magic on a typically bleak FA Cup third round weekend. Inspired by Chelsea's retro kit, we consider possible ways to spice up football's tired relationship with the Cup. Tom Pope gets a mention. Elsewhere we consider Jurgen Klopp's comments on the craziness of the fixture schedule, and compare the physiological load on players today with what we know about the demands of football in the 1970s. David Sneyd is in studio to talk to us about Ireland's Youthquake. And Miguel Delaney joins us on the line to defend his thesis that Liverpool's ascent is just more of the same old hypercapitalism.

A wave of protests are sweeping through Iran, Iraq and Lebanon. Retribution in Iraq and Iran has been swift and savage, and hundreds of young people have been killed - but what lies behind the unrest? David Aaronovitch explores the common themes - unemployment, crony sectarianism, corruption and hopelessness. These were the issues that led countless thousands onto the streets in many middle eastern countries during the Arab Spring ten years ago. What lessons have governments and protesters learnt since then? The young people are hoping for sustained political and economic change this time. What chance is there of that happening? Today’s topic for our super-secret counter-intelligent Spy podcast is The Avengers! No, not that Avengers, the serialized British television show The Avengers, which ran from 1961 to 1969. The Avengers, a kind of satirical, stylized drama, played on the more lighthearted aspects of the Cold War, the space race and the Youthquake. In terms of tone, The Avengers is more Dr. Who than James Bond. The show follows the adventures of John Steed, a British spy, who works for a shadowy organization run by Mother and Father. Throughout the show he is partnered with, at first a forgettable male doctor, and then several far-more-competent, female super-spies, of whom Emma Peel is likely the most famous. The fashion of the era, was an important part of the style and look of the show and many mod designers, such as Pierre Cardin, lent their skills or design to the costuming. While it might be easy to assume that the Avengers only made use of fashion for Cathy Gale, Emma Peel or Tara King, who exemplified different parts of that swinging Mod style, the character of John Steed represents an important part of 1960s fashion, the rise of the Edward Dandy. We’re gonna talk about it all today, or almost all of it, or maybe only a few seasons of it, but we’re definitely going to talk about it a lot. Jane Hilderman, executive director of The Samara Centre for Democracy looks at millennial attitudes to voting and how that could play out in this election. Host: John Michael McGrath, Producers: Colin Ellis and Tim Alamenciak, Technical Producer: Matthew O'Mara, Podcast Intern: Michal Stein, Production Coordinator: Caitlin Plummer, Podcast Manager: Hannah Sung.
The world is now home to the largest youth population in human history. In India nearly one million people turn 18 years old every month, and about one billion people are projected to be under the age of 18 in Africa by 2050. This unprecedented deluge of 15–24 year olds, many of whom are concentrated in rural areas in low to middle-income countries, could positively transform entire societies if they are engaged, equipped, and empowered in productive employment. However, if their needs and ambitions are neglected they could also be a major source of social unrest, political instability, and conflict. How can countries capitalize on the potential of this promising demographic to secure economic growth and stability? What role will key sectors such as agriculture and technology play in securing youth livelihoods? Featuring: Ertharin Cousin, Distinguished Fellow, Global Food and Agriculture; Rayid Ghani, Director, Center for Data Science and Public Policy, University of Chicago; Former Chief Scientist, Obama for America 2012 ; Felix Kwame Yeboah, Assistant Professor, International Development, Michigan State University. Moderated by Alesha Black, Director, Global Food and Agriculture Program .

Listen to the debate at the Battle of Ideas 2017 at the Barbican in London. Whereas earlier generations of young people provoked outrage among their elders, millennials – those born in the late 1990s and early 2000s – seem to attract merely condescension and concern. Today’s youth have been labelled ‘Generation Snowflake’ for their declarations of emotional vulnerability and demands for protection and support. Instead of revolting, today’s students seem to be preoccupied with difficulties in negotiating personal relationships, demanding formal instruction and regulation of issues of consent and protection of apparently fragile identities against hostile criticism. Yet, for those coming of age in an era of austerity and debt, Brexit and Trump, anxiety and apprehension may be appropriate responses. And, in their embrace of issues of social justice, and support for the kinder, gentler form of politics espoused by Jeremy Corbyn and Bernie Sanders, perhaps the millennials are pointing the way towards real change in society. Are the adults of tomorrow over-anxious snowflakes masquerading as a youthquake? Or is their pursuit of a different sort of politics – putting emotion and morality before ideology and policy – exactly the kind of shake up Western politics has been waiting for? Episode 9: Dead Or Alive - Mad, Bad, and Dangerous To Know (1987) - Part 2 Last week, Brian and Sarah began a discussion of the 1987 album "Mad, Bad, and Dangerous to Know" by Liverpool band Dead Or Alive. This was the band's third record and the follow-up to the world-wide hit "Youthquake" which featured their classic single "You Spin Me Round." Part 3: Track by Track Each of the four tracks on side two are discussed and it turns out that Sarah has blocked out a part of her past from 1991. Brian reminds her of a late-night call to a radio station to dedicate a DOA song to a particular DJ. Something In My House Hooked On Love I Want You Special Star Part 4: Final Grade Each of our hosts sum up their feelings on this record and award it a final grade on a scale of 1 to 5 record adapters, you know, those things you used to have to use to play 45s.... Part 5: Extra Credit Sarah notices both hosts have a bit of an issue with this art on this album's cover, so she attempts to remedy the problem with some extra credit. Can either of the hosts come up with a better cover?? See the videos we discuss at : Something In My House - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0ZKNzs35GP8 Read more at http://permanentrecordpodcast.com/
Not long after I finished up my front pleated, mid-weight, denim trousers. Suddenly hit …I was taking my sewing inspiration from trousers I’d sewn in high school – which for me was quite some time ago. And that inspiration came from fashion designer Betsey Johnson. What will you hear in this month’s show? 1) Vintage Alley Cat – The Original Betsey Johnson – In which Laurel is whisked away on a time travel jaunt, reminding her that not all of her sewing projects come from the pages of the here and now. 2) Betsey Briefly – A Timeline a. Including a bit about how Betsey’s designs iinfluenced my own coming of age sewing https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Youthquake_(movement) 3) -Trousers Inspired by an Alley Cat In which A woman draws inspiration from her teenaged sewing self. Talk about time travel! a. The original Betsey Johnson pattern - way back when - was B3289 http://meencantacoser.blogspot.com/2017/01/vintage-flared-trousers-alley-cat.html b. Further ideas for sewing inspired by Betsey Johnson. The Jamie M pattern, I mentioned in this section, - way back when - was B6533 Here's a posting I did showing a little bit of what I talked about in the 'cast. http://meencantacoser.blogspot.com/2017/01/laced-up-empire-alley-cat-more-betsey.html
