Benmont Tench is the keyboardist and a founding member of Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers. That's reason enough to listen to this podcast. I've interviewed other icons—Duff McKagan, Johnny Marr, and Jerry Harrison, to name a few—and they all have one common thread: a voracious appetite for art in all its forms. They consume books, movies, paintings, poetry, sculptures, you name it. Artists with longevity know that to create art, you have to constantly consume it.Tench is no exception. “The more I read, the more chance I have to get inspired because I'm opening myself up to language. But I'm inspired by all art; I'm even inspired by looking out the window. It all comes in, and it all shows up in my writing,” he says.  When I asked Tench if he favors any certain medium, his response was simple: “From Milton to Milton Bradley.” He's also the first songwriter I've interviewed to cite both Manet and the Steve Martin movie Dead Men Don't Wear Plaid as inspiration.Tench's solo album The Melancholy Season is out now. Send us a text

Take 1 Steve Martin, 1 Carl Reiner, add in a ton of old film noir stars in clips from some of their most famous movies, blend it up, and what do you get? Dead Men Don't Wear Plaid, a fun experiment of a film from Martin and Reiner to see if they could come up with a new story by inserting Martin into old clips. It not only works, it's funny as hell. Co-starring Rachel Ward, Reni Santoni, and Carl Reiner (in a hysterical send-up of stupid Nazis).

We're celebrating 100 episodes this week by returning to not one but two recurring themes from nearly two years of the podcast: the filmography of Steve Martin and the belief that February belongs to romance -- two concepts that combine decently well with some magical realism in our movie of the week, an absurdist take on life and love in Los Angeles that still feels like a cutting send-up of the city more than 30 years later. It's 1991's L.A. Story, directed by Mick Jackson, written by Steve Martin, and starring Martin, Victoria Tennant, Richard E. Grant, Marilu Henner, Sarah Jessica Parker, Kevin Pollak, Patrick Stewart, Frances Fisher, Iman, Larry Miller, Woody Harrelson, Rick Moranis and John Lithgow. So tonally cartoonish that it feels Martin is moments away from being crushed by a grand piano and popping out the top of it unscathed at any moment, that silliness conceals an earnest goodness about love, the universe, and everything finding a way to work out as it should. Are these beliefs that go hand-in-hand with the movie's wacky exterior, or does the film find itself at odds with itself? Find out, as we dive into a movie Hayley recently picked up on VHS. Plus: J Mo's still sore from having climbed into the wrestling ring over the weekend! If you'd like to watch the movie before listening along to our discussion, L.A. Story is currently streaming for free on the CTV app in Canada at the time of publication. Other works discussed in this episode include the video games Mario & Luigi: Brothership and Balatro, as well as TMNT: Mutant Mayhem, Only The Brave, 24, The Departed, The Nice Guys, Mission: Impossible - Fallout, Jurassic Park, the JJ Abrams Star Trek trilogy, the Disney Star Wars sequel trilogy, A Goofy Movie, Bowfinger, The Lonely Guy, Dead Men Don't Wear Plaid, Cheaper By The Dozen, The Tooth Fairy and They Came Together. Feb2ary Is For Lovers continues next week as we run it back for another 100 episodes beginning with Nicolas Cage and Cher in 1987's Moonstruck, which may be the most readily available film we've ever covered as it's currently streaming on Amazon Prime, Crave, Starz, Criterion Channel, Tubi and Hoopla as we release this. Thank you so much for listening for 100 episodes, or however long you've been on the ride. We love you, and see you at the movies!!

You might think Lexi would decide she had enough on her plate dealing with Tony's corpse while also making sure she didn't lose the business he agreed to in his final moments. But, in fact, seeing Eve rapidly unraveling psychologically just convinces her to add a new scheme to her schedule: she can certainly take advantage of Eve's instability and use it against Amanda! Mark L. Taylor manages to cash another Melrose Place check as Dr. Visconti gets involved. Terry's feelings for Ryan continue to linger, such that she creates a seemingly awkward situation for Megan to walk in on and call off the engagement (again), but surely both McBros will close out the series deliriously happy with the blondes they were always destined to be with...right? Once again, it's time for the stars to shine at the Academy Awards. Edith Head was an American costume designer who won eight Oscars for Best Costume Design. And nominated for 35 Oscars, she became the most awarded woman in the Academy's history. She is considered to be one of the greatest costume designers in movie history. She designed Grace Kelly's dress for Alfred Hitchcock's “Rear Window,” the sarong dress for Dorothy Lamour in “The Hurricane,” and she received her final Oscar for work on “The Sting” with Paul Neuman and Robert Redford. She also worked in television, designing Endora's clothing on “Bewitched.” She designed clothes for men too, including five films for John Wayne, Steve Martin in “Dead Men Don't Wear Plaid” and Elvis in “Blue Hawaii.”

Felicia is joined once again by José Roldan (listen to our episode on The Gleaners & I) to discuss Gordon Willis' work on Woody Allen's controversial but groundbreaking film, Zelig (1983). We chat about how Willis and team were able to succeed in making this film, and the blocking, lighting and camera techniques that were used to achieve its look. We also discuss how this story would be perceived in today's world and why the subject matter doesn't really hold up. This is our Gordon Willis closer, and I think an important one to study as it shows how important lighting really is to a film - specifically for a one needing to match with found footage. - O trecho "obrigado pela atenção" ("thanks for your time") está na música "Forget It", do álbum "Cold Fact". - O blues contra o sistema de Rodríguez chama-se "This Is Not a Song, It's an Outburst: Or, the Establishment Blues" ("Isto não é uma música, é um desabafo: ou, o blues do sistema"), do álbum "Cold Fact". ... Director Siodmak utilizes creative camera angles and lighting techniques to craft a visually stunning noir landscape. Cinematographer Woody Bredell's high-contrast, shadowy aesthetic defines the classic film noir look and feel. Lancaster shines in his first on-screen role as Ole “The Swede” Anderson, a washed-up boxer mixed up in a criminal underworld scheme. His powerful performance launched the charismatic new star to fame. Ava Gardner embodies the femme fatale archetype as the alluring but dangerous siren Kitty Collins.Standout Elements of This Influential Crime Drama The opening 12 minutes closely follow Hemingway's original story before transitioning into a complex, nonlinear narrative structure, utilizing flashbacks from multiple perspectives to unravel the central mystery. We discuss the extended single-take heist scene, staged with incredible choreography and camerawork, as a prime example of Siodmak's skilled direction. Miklós Rózsa's propulsive, jazz-inspired score sets the ominous, moody tone throughout the shadowy proceedings. We debate whether splitting the protagonist role (the Swede) from the main character (the insurance investigator) dilutes the hard-boiled noir narrative. Steve Martin Month begins! As the comedy icon is set to return to the small screen early next week with Season 3 of Only Murders In The Building, we trace Steve Martin's love of crime comedy and detective noir all the way back to 1982's Dead Men Don't Wear Plaid, directed by Carl Reiner, written by Reiner and Martin, and starring Martin, Reiner, Rachel Ward, and a whole host of classic stars of the past including Humphrey Bogart, Cary Grant, Ava Gardner, Burt Lancaster, Ingrid Bergman, Veronica Lake and Vincent Price, as footage from old noir films is edited into an entirely new comedy. It's an incredible conceit when it really works, though the movie could perhaps use a little more Wild And Crazy Guy energy to hold it all together. Plus: We go deep on Barbie now that J Mo's seen it, Hayley is super into the new Carly Rae Jepsen album, and who doesn't like an ice cream treat? This is a difficult film to find online, so if you're looking to watch along with us this week good luck! Unless you live in Chetwynd, British Columbia in which case it is at your local library. And speaking of Chetwynd, stay tuned to the bitter end of this episode for a Peace FM radio throwback dripping with the kind of noir vibes this movie is all about. We'll be back next week with another Steve Martin comedy from Hayley's DVD collection, 1984's The Lonely Guy, which pits Martin opposite Charles Grodin -- a match made in comedy heaven.

What a great time this week on a VERY special Happy Birthday to Me episode of the show. I got to spend it with four of my favorite people on the planet, Top Instructor Tom Patri, my all-time favorite Author and TV Producer Keith Hirshland, plus 2 fantastic Actors & Show Hosts Mitch & Matthew Laurance. Tom Patri and I looked back at The Masters plus we discussed our Top 5 players of all time and a couple of guys who are very underrated. Keith Hirshland updated us on how things are going out on the LIV Tour. As the Producer of their golf tournaments, he shares some of the new, innovative technology they have. When you have all 48 players on the course at the same time, and balls in the air all over the golf course, keeping track of the leaders in the first two rounds can be a challenge. We also talk about LIV's team concept and how that keeps all 48 players engaged even if they're not on top of the leaderboard. Mitch Laurance shares a historical perspective on the top players of all-time discussion. We get to hear great stories about Old Tom Morris, Tom Morris Jr., James Braid, Harry Vardon, and Ted Ray. Mitch also talks about his recent trip to Pinehurst and a fantastic story from the round he played last year at historic Aiken Golf Club. Matthew Laurance is such a great storyteller and we get to hear a lot of his movie career. O Death! I will always love this episode just for the intro scene (and many other things too, but heck... that's how you do a character intro!). The penultimate episode of s5, and of Kripke Era. There's just a lot going on, and I realized as I lay in bed after recording this that there was so much more I wanted to say about Death, Chuck's Story/Process, and the parallel of Death having been shackled by Lucifer and prevented from acting independently here and yet how his actions (and non-actions to this point, including his cryptic message to Bobby delivered by zombie!Karen back in 5.15 Dead Men Don't Wear Plaid) are SHOCKINGLY similar to how Billie was made a pawn of Chuck's' s15 narrative. For many of the same reasons. So at least now I've said it somewhere, but this is how I view Death throughout the series. But I think I covered everything else in the episode, so... LINKS! Famine. We're back to the Horsemen, the apocalypse, and learn some deep truths about Team Free Will. I think the most important takeaways from this episode are to remember that it was written and produced to come AFTER the episode that aired as 5.15 (Dead Men Don't Wear Plaid), and immediately before 5.16 Dark Side of the Moon. It makes so much more sense emotionally and for character continuity that way... thanks 2012 Winter Olympics for screwing it up lol. The surface level read of Dean and Cas's revelations in this one obscure a much deeper truth for both of them. Sam... is the most surface-level honest about his hunger. And it's all agonizing! Plus we learn some very painful things about John and Mary Winchester, and just how much Heaven meddled in their relationship. Which I find doubly fascinating now that we're watching The Winchesters. We'll talk about all of that and more, but there's also a lot of bonus material for this one, because I've talked about all of this before, as well. LINKS! Greetings Boils and Ghouls, it's officially Spooktober month here on the podcast and we are celebrating with a whole month of creepy Canadian animation. For this week's episode, Chris and Sylvie ponder what would happen if you took a campy, gory, salacious HBO show and....just kind of take all that good stuff out and marketed it to Canadian kids. You get the ill-fated kiddified version of Tales from the Crypt, now know as Nelvana's Tales from the Cryptkeeper. Between the digs at the atrociously cheap animation and the ruminating over the doomed endeavor of repackaging adult entertainment for kids, your hosts talk a bit about horror media intended for young audiences, the legacy of the EC Comics inspired franchise, and a kick-ass episode where the actual Grim Reaper dunks a basketball. Plus: We settle the age old debate of whether or not Ingmar Bergman's Seventh Seal would be a better film if it centered around hooping instead of chess and namedrop CATS (2019) because why not? Also, Andy clicks on an unknown link he got in his email and then his penis falls off. This month's round-up is an eclectic bunch, which, if you know me at this point, is a good thing. Things are beginning to lean towards the change of seasons thematically. There is a Carl Reiner/Steve Martin comedy-noir collab called Dead Men Don't Wear Plaid featuring some help from a bevy of screen legends, plus an unexpected discovery from Code Red in the form of Story of a Woman, a romantic drama starring Ingmar Bergman regular Bibi Andersson, Dead and Buried star James Farentino, and Unsolved Mysteries host Robert Stack. In collaboration with Greenwich Entertainment, Kino Lorber brings us All the Streets Are Silent: The Convergence of Hip Hop and Skateboarding (1987-1997), a loving look back at two subcultures intersecting right before they became mainstream. Kino Lorber also has a delectable double feature starring IU Cinema favorite Vincent Price with The Tomb of Ligia, debatably the best of Roger Corman's Edgar Allan Poe adaptations, and Theater of Blood, the second best Price movie where he theatrically and thematically gets revenge on those who wronged him. My dual picks of the month come in the form of Criterion's release of Neil Jordan's Mona Lisa, starring the late great Bob Hoskins in a surprisingly tender role, and Arrow's luxuriant release of Ridley Scott's aesthetically ambitious Legend. To me, it's a line-up of films that feel like fall (noir! dramatic romance! dark fantasy! horror!) and nicely transitions us to the spooky stuff coming down the pipeline in October. As always, a month filled with pleasures I can't wait to tell you about. Head over to the IU Cinema Blog to read the written reviews for films I did not mention here. https://blogs.iu.edu/aplaceforfilm/
