How does an artist once perceived to be ahead of his time fall behind the times? The choreographer/director of Golden Age classics like Singin' the Rain and Funny Face left Hollywood for all the 60s and the first half of the 70s, perfecting a certain brand of sophisticated comedy/romance abroad with films like Charade, Bedazzled and Two for the Road. His rough Hollywood re-entry was marked by exercises in nostalgia for eras gone by (Lucky Lady, a movie about Prohibition Era gangsters starring Burt Reynolds and Liza Minnelli; the 1930s spoof Movie Movie) and attempts to give audiences of the 80s what it was assumed they wanted (the sci-fi debacle Saturn 3, the sex comedy Blame it on Rio). We talk dubbing controversies, feminism, Henry Higgins being a dick, employment opportunities, ambiguous endings, new wave music videos, bigfoot, Spooktember, and more! #FlowerShopForEliza We don't actually talk about bigfoot, but I don't think anyone reads these. Corrections: Audrey Hepburn did do another musical Indy loved, Funny Face!   My Fair Lady is a 1964 American musical drama film adapted from the 1956 Lerner and Loewe stage musical based on George Bernard Shaw's 1913 stage play Pygmalion. With a screenplay by Alan Jay Lerner and directed by George Cukor, the film depicts a poor Cockney flower-seller named Eliza Doolittle who overhears an arrogant phonetics professor, Henry Higgins, as he casually wagers that he could teach her to speak "proper" English, thereby making her presentable in the high society of Edwardian London. The film stars Audrey Hepburn as Eliza Doolittle and Rex Harrison as Henry Higgins, with Stanley Holloway, Gladys Cooper and Wilfrid Hyde-White in supporting roles. A critical and commercial success, it became the second highest-grossing film of 1964 and won eight Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Actor, and Best Director.[4] In 1998, the American Film Institute named it the 91st greatest American film of all time. In 2006 it was ranked eighth in the AFI's Greatest Movie Musicals list. Gen Z's sass meets classroom brass…. Welcome back to Teachers Off Duty with our hosts KC Mack, HonestTeacherVibes: Bri Richardson, and the Angry Gym Teacher, Tom Filline! Let's have a real talk about Gen Z. They're just built different. What is up with these snack smugglers and TikTok pre-stars?  Maybe we shouldn't cry or laugh at the hilarious yet frustrating reality of teaching Gen Z students who don't know how to do a simple signature. It's a skill we often take for granted, but for this new generation, it's a foreign concept. Maybe they figured out a better way? Signatures stump them but we're the ones lost at their new language that we can barely keep up with. And it's not just in the hallways, it's in the classroom too. From slang to memes, it's like a whole new language that we have to learn. And speaking of not keeping up with, we argue with KC about the infamous "shoe crease" dilemma. These kids refuse to change into their PE shoes because they don't want to crease them. He says he gets the issue, us not so much…..  Drink some hot tea to prepare to yell “WORLDSTAR!” at the next teacher debate because it might just hit the internet. Who knew there was a whole wave of Gen Z students starting "fight pages" on social media. It's a disturbing trend that's taking off - one page even got a brand deal….  But it's not just the students who can be a handful. There was a teacher trying to bully a student who was bullying others. She thought it would hold up a mirror to their actions but that's just not the route to take bestie.  It's not always crazy, sometimes its outright HILARIOUS. From "Mrs. Funny Face" to "Mr. Cool" to “[REDACTED]”, these nicknames humble us real quick. 2:37 - Chalk Dust Confessions Begin 5:45 - Gen Z Hooligan Behavior 10:03 - Social Media Meets Syllabus 15:15 - Teaching Tech: Hit or Miss? 20:47 - Third Grader Mystery Story 25:58 - Behind Teacher's Lounge Doors 30:42 - Latest Tea on Teaching Fads Besties! The President and First Lady remarked on how the visit to the estate gave them the rare experience of Hollywood's golden era, as the former home of entertainment icons, Rita Hayworth and Orson Wells. In addition to the Hollywood luminaries that were imagined to have gathered at galas in the estates palacios living room, or having dinners of 20 or more in the dinning hall, as well as the thought of Ms Hayworth and Mr Wells themselves making an entrance on the grand staircase, is like stepping back in time, as mental images of “Citizen Kane” come to mind. The home still entertains Hollywood elite as guests of Ms Lee, past and present including George Chakiris, Rich Little, Phyllis Diller, Bob Hope, Alex Trebeck, Michael Feinstein, Carol Channing, Hugh O'Brien, Sally Struthers, Debbie Reynolds and the Rat Pack and many more. During the recent state gathering, with lunch prepared by “Star Chef” Joey Santos, Ms Lee was presented with a gorgeous Lithuanian glass art sculpture, in gratitude for her lifelong connection to and pride in her Lithuanian Heritage. Ms Lee's connection to her old work roots in Lithuania, stem from her grandmother, whose release from Siberia made international headlines, and the subject in her recently released, best-selling memoirs title “Consider Your Ass Kiss.” A title referencing the actions required and gratitude for the monumental effort to bring her family to America from Russia during The Cold War. At the time her grandmother made all the news and even went on Johnny Carson with her. In 2019 she returned to Lithuania as principal speaker for The Women's Day Convention. During her visit, she spent precious time with the now former President and Alma and had the pleasure of meeting the soon to be elected new President Gitanas Nauseda. Today, Ruta is still an important celebrity ambassador to Lithuania, with acknowledgements by the country of her families roots, as proven by this weeks state dinner in her grand old Hollywood home.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/gary-s-night-dreamers-talk-radio-show--2788432/support.

Today our guest is Ruta Lee, one of Hollywood's most multifaceted and top-notched civic contributors. Born in Montreal, Lee is the daughter of a Lithuanian tailor. While at Hollywood High, Lee's career in show business began at the famed Grauman's Chinese Theatre… as an usherette, then candy girl. She was quickly promoted to box office cashier and just as quickly fired. Her dancing was better than her math. She vowed to return to that famous courtyard (years later, talent and serendipity placed her star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, directly in front of that box office from which she was fired). Soon after, she was signed by MGM as the youngest of the Seven Brides for Seven Brothers and subsequently in Funny Face with Fred Astaire and Audrey Hepburn, as Tyrone Power's secret love in Witness for the Prosecution, and Frank Sinatra's leading lady in Sergeant's Three, to name but a few of the many films in her credits. Simultaneously, Lee launched into television, with over 2000 appearances on shows from Perry Mason to Power Rangers, Twilight Zone to Murder She Wrote, Hogan's Heroes to Love Boat, and Roseanne. Lee was also co-host on NBC's High Rollers with Alex Trebek, and a regular on Hollywood Squares with Peter Marshall. Ms Lee's connection to her roots in Lithuania, stem from her grandmother, whose release from Siberia made international headlines, and the subject in her recently released, best-selling memoir title Consider Your Ass Kissed. A title referencing the actions required and gratitude for the monumental effort to bring her family to America from Russia during the Cold War. At the time her grandmother made all the news and even went on Johnny Carson with her. Lee is highly acclaimed for her leadership role in The Thalians, a charitable organization which is committed to good mental health from pediatric to geriatric. She has been either chairman or president for over 45 years… roles exchanged between herself and Debbie Reynolds. The Thalians honored Ruta Lee for her dedication to mental health, where she joined the ranks of previous honorees, Gene Kelly, Frank Sinatra, Sammy Davis, Mary Tyler Moore, Whoopi Goldberg, Angela Lansbury and and Clint Eastwood, to name just a few. Recently, the legendary actress received Lithuania's highest honor from President Valdas Adamkus at a magnificent ceremony in the Vilnius Presidential Palace. Her famous Hollywood Estate served as the perfect backdrop to receive a visit from the Lithuanian President and First Lady, with Lithuanian Ambassador To the US Audra Plepyte in attendance. The President and First Lady remarked on how the visit to the estate gave them the rare experience of Hollywood's golden era, as the former home of entertainment icons, Rita Hayworth and Orson Wells.  In addition to the Hollywood luminaries that were imagined to have gathered at galas in the estates palacios living room, or having dinners of 20 or more in the dinning hall, as well as the thought of Ms Hayworth and Mr Wells themselves making an entrance on the grand staircase, is like stepping back in time, as mental images of Citizen Kane come to mind. www.rutalee.com https://www.barnesandnoble.com/w/consider-your-ass-kissed-ruta-lee/1139109864

Harvey Brownstone conducts an in-depth interview with the son of the Legendary Audrey Hepburn, Sean Hepburn Ferrer About Harvey's guest: Today's guest, Sean Hepburn Ferrer, is the son of one of the most talented, respected, revered and beloved cinematic legends and humanitarians:  Audrey Hepburn.    In classic films like “Roman Holiday”, “Sabrina”, “War and Peace”, “Funny Face”, “Love in the Afternoon”, “The Nun's Story”, “Breakfast at Tiffany's”, “The Children's Hour”, “My Fair Lady”, “Wait Until Dark” and many more, Audrey Hepburn dazzled, inspired and enchanted us.  And she captivated our hearts with her iconic beauty, vulnerability, sincerity and incomparable empathy, which underscored and motivated everything she did.    She received 5 Academy Award nominations and won the Oscar for Best Actress for “Roman Holiday”.  And after her passing, the Academy bestowed the Jean Herscholt Humanitarian Award upon her, posthumously, which our guest accepted on her behalf.   Audrey Hepburn was one of the first people to be an EGOT winner.  She won an Oscar, a Grammy, an Emmy, and 2 Tony Awards.  She also won dozens of other awards including 3 BAFTA Awards and 3 Golden Globe Awards, including the Cecil B. DeMille Award.  And the American Film Institute named her the third greatest female screen legend of all time.   She was the first celebrity to have her own fragrance, called “L'interdit”, created by Givenchy in 1967.   But beyond all of that – beyond her iconic beauty, glamour, fashion sense, elegance and warmth, there was Audrey Hepburn the monumentally generous humanitarian.  She was the truly the walking definition of “the milk of human kindness”.  She never forgot that, immediately after the war, an organization which later became UNICEF, brought food, medicine and clothing to her community in Holland, where she lived as a child during the Nazi occupation.   And so, in the last 6 years of her life, as a Goodwill Ambassador for UNICEF, she made numerous trips to the world's most impoverished and war-torn countries, especially in Africa, advocating passionately and tirelessly on behalf of the children being devasted by disease, famine and genocide.  President George Bush Sr. presented her with the Presidential Medal of Freedom in recognition of her contribution to humanity.  And if you go to the UNICEF Headquarters in New York, you will see a beautiful statue called “The Spirit of Audrey”.   Our guest, who is the son of Audrey Hepburn and the iconic actor, director, producer and writer, Mel Ferrer, has had a successful career in the film industry for many years.  Shortly after his beloved mother passed away in 1993, he and his brother Luca created he Audrey Hepburn Children's Fund, a charity that continues the humanitarian work and honours the legacy of his dear mother.  He's been touring the world with his exhibition, entitled "Intimate Audrey", raising funds for his non-profit organization.   In 2003, he released a wonderfully poignant book entitled, “Audrey Hepburn:  An Elegant Spirit: A Son Remembers”, and all of his royalties went to the Audrey Hepburn Children's Fund.  And in 2020, he and his wife Karin, published “Little Audrey's Daydream”, a children's book about his mother's childhood in Nazi-occupied Europe. Proceeds from the book benefit the European Organisation for Rare Diseases. For more interviews and podcasts go to: https://www.harveybrownstoneinterviews.com/ To see more about Sean Hepburn Ferrer, go to:https://twitter.com/ferrerhepburnhttps://www.instagram.com/seanhepburnferrer/

Both guests need no introduction, as they have both made notable appearances on previous episodes of the podcast. However, it's worth noting that they're perfectly suited to the task of analysing this classic Audrey Hepburn vehicle.
