In episode two of our Visionary Remakes season, we survey the recent Coen brothers remake of True Grit (2010) and compare it to the original film, a John Wayne vehicle from 1969.Special Guest: Brian Eggert is the owner and film critic of Deep Focus Review, where he has written movie reviews, in-depth essays, and critical analyses since 2007. Brian also regularly appears on KARE 11, the NBC affiliate for the Twin Cities, to review and discuss movies. He belongs to the Society For Cinema and Media Studies, Minnesota Film Critics Alliance, Online Film & Television Association, International Film Society Critics, Independent Film Critics of America, The Critics Circle, and National Coalition of Independent Scholars.Westerns have gone through many cycles since the beginning of filmmaking. Right now, we are seeing an uptick in interest as the tv show Yellowstone dominates the traditional tv market. But back in 2010, Westerns were definitely far off in the background as comic book movies had begun to take over the box office. In 2010, the Coen brothers were coming off a very successful adaption of No Country for Old Men (2007) as well as two more left of center films, the sprightly spy romp Burn After Reading from 2008 and the niche existentialist A Serious Man from 2009. It is unclear why they decided to remake True Grit and focus on the novel from 1968 instead of the John Wayne movie which came a year later in 1969, but the choice was very successful. True Grit (2010) became the 2nd biggest Western in the modern box office. The 2010 True Grit showcases the refined talents of the Coens alongside the gorgeous cinematography of Roger Deakins, the layered and rich music from Carter Burwell, and a smashing breakout debut performance from Hailee Steinfeld as the lead Mattie Ross. The 1969 version of True Grit offers so much less. Despite John Wayne winning an Oscar for his portrayal of Rooster Cogburn, the original film seems totally out of step and out of time. In hindsight, it was an end-of-the-line production for the core creatives involved. The director, writer, and star actor were all at the end of their careers. Indeed this very type of Western was on its last leg as evidenced by the giant leap the genre made at the same time this film was being produced and released. Watch any of the bigger westerns from the late 1960s and then try to sit through True Grit (1969). The dislocation and disorientation is severe. The original True Grit was a swan song that came about a decade too late.

The movie True Grit was number one at the box office in 1969 with John Wayne in the lead role and once again when the story was adapted in 2010 with Jeff Bridges reprising the role of gritty Rooster Cogburn. Although the movie's title suited the grizzled and hard-drinking US Marshall, it wasn't really about him. Instead, it was about the young 14-year-old Mattie Ross who was determined to bring her father's murderer to justice.  Of all the qualities that make people successful, I don't think grit gets the due it deserves. It's a quality that isn't universally shared by all. Still, as rare a quality as it is, I think it can be refined by anyone who truly seeks to add it to the arsenal of values they bring to potential employers.  On this episode of the Career PROgressions Podcast, I'm honored to have the gritty entrepreneur Jamie Noe with me to have a conversation about facing your career with true grit. Since 2014 his company, Insurance Group of America, has had organic 35% growth year over year with a 97% employee retention rate. Can you imagine the grit it takes to accomplish something like that?! Like good Midwesterners, we discuss the weather...then move on to the economics of the Denver metro area. Steve's air conditioner conked out, Brandon's kids are on the road. On to the movie, The Night of the Wererooster: Surviving family members of recently deceased people gather in the woods of rural Western Virginia to learn what happened to their loved ones. Charlotte Reeves has assembled them, and tells them she can help them learn the truth. The truth is, there is a god-damned WereROOSTER in the woods preying on the innocent. Is there really a Wererooster terrorizing Western Virginia, or is this just a cock-and-bull story? The cocky Charlotte teams up with the cocksure Col. Sanders, cock-of-the-walk Buddy, peacocking Lou, cockeyed Stan, and Bobbi, whose mouth is always going off half-cocked. Can this plucky crew overcome the odds of this cockamamie quest, or will they be coldcocked? WHY ISN'T THE GUY WHO PLAYED COLONEL SANDERS LISTED IN THE CREDITS?? Night of the Wererooster final grade: Steve says this one way "way better" than he thought it was going to be. Entertainment value elevates this "shitty movie" into the "not-so-shitty category." Lack of a "creature," and filler scenes aimed at a 90-minute goal detracted from the parts of the movie that were surprisingly good and well done. 3.00/5.0 Brandon Producer/Director/Actor David Radford seems to have sat down to try to make a shitty movie, and succeeded in doing so. This one blows the other "micro budget" movies we've watched out of the water. Penis-related humor hit in the right places. 3.52/5 Cocktail of the Week: Rooster Whiskey Cocktail 1 1/2 oz Bourbon 1/2 oz cinnamon Schnapps or, in our case, Fireball 4 oz Sarsaparilla or Root Beer. Rim a rocks glass with kosher salt. Mix the cocktail in the glass. First the liquors, then top with the root beer or Sarsaparilla. Stir to combine. Garnish with lime wedge. Cocktail Grade: Steve thought this cocktail was inspired by the lead character in True Grit, Rooster Cogburn. Turns out, it must have actually been inspired by the flavors of a rooster's cloaca. Root beer, cinnamon, and salt don't mix. We feel bad we wasted decent bourbon on this. Only drink this if you hate yourself. 0.2/5 ------------------ Contact us with feedback or cocktail/movie recommendations to: boozeandbmovies@gmail.com X: @boozeandbmovies Instagram: @boozeandbmovies Threads: @boozeandbmovies www.facebook.com/boozeandbmovies --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/boozeandbmovies/message Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/boozeandbmovies/support

In this thought-provoking episode of Conf T, hosts Bryan Young and Tom Porto sit down with Joe Marshall, also known as Rooster Cogburn. Joe, a Senior Security Strategist with Talos, brings his expertise in artificial intelligence and machine learning to the table. AI vs ML: We kick off the episode by addressing a common confusion - what is the difference between Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML)? Thanks to an enlightening explanation from ChatGPT, we now know that AI is the broader concept of machines being able to carry out tasks in a way we would consider 'smart', while ML is a specific subset of AI that involves the idea of training machines on data to learn and make decisions. AI Confidence and Source Citation: A deep dive into the issues surrounding AI's confidence and its lack of source citation. We discuss why it's so important for AI to cite its sources and how it can be improved. Ethical Guardrails in AI: Joe gives an insightful perspective on the ethical guardrails in place for AI and how they can potentially be circumvented, sparking a thoughtful debate on the ethical use of this technology. AI Sentience: Is AI sentient? This question sparks a fascinating discussion about the nature of sentience and how it applies, or doesn't apply, to AI. AI and the Dark Web: We explore the sinister side of AI with a look at its use on the Dark Web. How is AI being leveraged by those operating outside the law, and what can be done about it? AI for Phishing and Other Nefarious Tasks: We delve into the concerning issue of AI being used for phishing and other malicious activities. What are the implications, and how can we defend against it? AI Pranks: On a lighter note, we discuss some of the more amusing uses of AI, sharing anecdotes about pranks and other humorous applications and even pulling one live on the show on Mr. Porto. Combating AI-Driven Cybersecurity Threats: Joe gives his expert advice on how to go on the offensive against AI-driven cybersecurity threats. Using Failure to Determine Personhood: An intriguing concept is presented - using failure as a way to determine whether an entity is a real person or AI. Future of AI: Finally, we contemplate the future of AI, now that the barrier to entry has been drastically lowered. What's next on the horizon for this rapidly evolving technology? Tune in to gain some valuable insights into these topics and much more. Whether you're a tech enthusiast or a professional in the field, this is an episode you won't want to miss.

He would only do two of these years, escaping once more – this time never to be seen again. At least not as Josiah Horner. The escaped convict would travel north, to Wyoming, and reinvent himself. Becoming Frank Canton, the epitome of law and order and a relentless pursuer of neerdoells. First as an inspector and detective for the Wyoming Stock Growers Association and then Sheriff of Johnson County, before being a key player in a little something called the Johnson County War. Canton would then mosey on down to Indian Territory, and once again pin on a badge, first as a sheriff and then as a deputy U.S. Marshal, chasing bad guys Rooster Cogburn style. This was at a time when the Territory was nearly overrun with outlaws and the area Canton was initially stationed in was so bad the county commissioners were asking for martial law. Turns out all they needed was Frank Canton. But then a new frontier beckoned. What some were taking to calling the last Frontier. Alaska. There was gold up there in the great white north and with gold comes crime. More than enough to keep a man such as Canton busy. But what about Frank's past as an outlaw? The former life of Josiah Horner, the escaped convict? Would this ever catch up with him? And was he really Mr. Law and Order, humble public servant or was this just a façade? A way of him ensuring that he was always aligned with the powerful and influential.Believe me when I say, this story has it all. Matthew Turner and Amelie Thomas from Fatal Attractions podcast return to Flixwatcher remotely to review Matthew's choice True Grit. True Grit is the 2010 Coen Brothers Western adapted from the the 1968 novel of the same name. It stars Jeff Bridges as Deputy U.S. Marshal Reuben J. "Rooster" Cogburn and Hailee Steinfeld as Mattie Ross and co stars Matt Damon, Josh Brolin, and Barry Pepper. The previous film adaptation starred John Wayne, Kim Darby and Glen Campbell. Mattie Ross, a 14-year-old farm girl, collects her father's body after he was shot while on a trip to buy horses by Tom (Brolin) Chaney. She hires a reluctant Rooster Cogburn to track Chaney down. He agrees to take her with him but departs without her. Furious Mattie pursues him riding alone and catches up with Rooster to find him riding with Texas Ranger LaBoeuf (Damon). Rooster is left with no choice but to carry on with Mattie in tow. It earned a whopping ten Oscar nominations and failed to win a single one. Despite this, mainly due to Roger Deakins cinematography, True Grit remains a favourite among fans of the Coens and Westerns. True Grit had a mixed response for recommendability due to its western genre, you either like them or you don't! Slightly higher scores for the other categories gives an overall rating of 3.75 The Coen Brothers are currently the top featured Flixwatcher directors (along with Tarantino) and True Grit ranks ahead The Ballad of Buster Scruggs but below No Country for Old Men. Frank Canton was not born; he was created. The mental fabrication of a notorious outlaw and escaped convict by the name of Joe Horner. After possibly killing his first man at the tender age of 15, Horner would spend the next several years as a cowboy and ranch hand before forming the infamous Horner gang, that would terrorize north Texas during the mid-1870's. After a full-on gun battle with the United States military in broad daylight, Horner is arrested but escapes. And, following the successful robbery of at least one bank, Horner was once more apprehended and jailed – this time in San Antonio – and once more escaped. Arrested again after yet another gunfight, Horner would be tried, found guilty and sentenced to 15 years hard labor in Huntsville State penitentiary. He would only do two of these years, escaping once more – this time never to be seen again. At least not as Josiah Horner. The escaped convict would travel north, to Wyoming, and reinvent himself. Take a break from the present, Pilgrim and mount up! Jovial Jay and Shua strap on the chaps, kick on the spurs, and don the ten-gallon hat as they remember some of the great Western movies and TV shows they grew up with. Get along l'il doggies and Enjoy Stuff!   Hollywood may have romanticized the Old West to create a pretty unrealistic view of history, but it sure made for some great movies. Cowboy movies have been around for more than 100 years, but some of them really stood out as we were growing up. Giddy up, pardners and get ready to Enjoy some Westerns.   News Kellogg's and Nickelodeon are ready to fill your guts with slime! Well, Apple Jacks Slime Cereal anyway We have new, official images of the LEGO Atari 2600 set, and it is almost cooler than the real thing.  The ice cream van is coming down your street. And the sign on the truck says “Hot” and “Now” because there are new Ice Cream inspired donuts at Krispy Kreme Nintendo is breaking into pictures! They just bought a movie studio to make their own movies based on their IP What we're Enjoying Look out for Shua because he's been flinging axes at a place in town called Flanneljax. Who knew that axe throwing could be a fun group activity? Well, Monty Python knew it was OK to be a lumberjack. Jay finally made it to see Pixar's Lightyear. He enjoyed the story but thought they could have done even more.    Sci-Fi Saturdays/MCU Location Scout Be sure to check out Jay's articles on Retrozap.com. This week he revisits the 1995 Bruce Willis film 12 Monkeys. Willis plays a time traveler that is sent back in time to save the future from a raging disease. The world is a mess because of disease and famine and a bunch of leaders that aren't helping to solve the…uh…  Um, I don't think he succeeded. And don't forget his articles on MCULocationScout.com for some great, interactive maps of filming locations.    Enjoy Movies, Pardner! Did you know that Westerns have been around since 1899? That's practically the Old West anyway. (Maybe they were just called movies back then) The famous Great Train Robbery (1903) may not have been the first, but it helped secure the genre as a main staple in Hollywood forever.    When we were growing up, a lot of the classics were played on TV. That's where we saw great flicks like The Magnificent Seven (1960) and Once Upon a Time in the West (1968). Clint Eastwood established himself as a very tough cowboy in the Spaghetti Westerns by Sergio Leone. The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly (1966) especially has some legendary scenes.    John Wayne really epitomized the cowboy image in a ton of movies. The Searchers (1956) didn't paint a very good picture of the Native Americans, but director John Ford established some incredible vistas that movie makers still use to set the scene today. And True Grit (1969) won him an academy award for the part of Rooster Cogburn. A role that would be reprised in 2010 by Jeff Bridges in the remake.    The 80s and 90s were no slouches when it came to Westerns either. The success of movies like Silverado (1985) brought forth a resurgence of the genre. Young Guns (1988) and Tombstone (1993) helped young stars make their mark and build some strong careers.    But they weren't all just straight Westerns. Some were hysterical, like Blazing Saddles (1974) or Three Amigos (1986). Or they may have Sci-Fi elements in them like Timerider: The Adventure of Lyle Swann (1982) or Back to the Future III (1990).    Plus, it was a genre that could be easily played out on TV. Bonanza, Gunsmoke, The Big Valley, and The Adventures of Brisco County, Jr. were going strong for years. The Westerns audience was built up by early stories of The Lone Ranger, Davy Crockett, and Daniel Boone.    Historically accurate or not, Westerns give storytellers the opportunity to tell some morality tales and establish some very interesting characters.    Do you like any Westerns? Would you wear a white hat or a black hat? Are you reading all the show notes? First person that emails me with the subject line, “There's a snake in my boot!” will get a special mention on the show.  Let us know. Mattie Ross' father is murdered while on a trip to Arkansas. With little options, Mattie turns to the one man who may be able to bring down the men who killed her father, Rooster Cogburn. Though the outcome of this 1969 remake may be predictable, trying to figure out who put this movie in the mix may prove a bit more challenging.

Oscar mistakes is the theme for the next few weeks. In 1970, John Wayne won Best Actor for his role in "True Grit" (1969) and Dustin Hoffman did not for "Midnight Cowboy". John Wayne played Rooster Cogburn as John Wayne, except for an eye patch.  Dustin Hoffman should have won for his portrayal of Ratso Rizzo, a New York City down and outer who befriends a Texas cowboy hustler named Joe Buck (Jon Voight). Much better film too.Next mistake. 1989, "Driving Miss Daisy" wins Best Picture; "Do the Right Thing" should have. Thanks for listening!Did we get something wrong? Have your own recommendations? Colorado Sun Daily Sun-Up: Has drought made life unsustainable for horses in northwestern Colorado?; Ouray County transformed for filming of True Grit

The Daily Sun-Up

Play Episode Listen Later Sep 7, 2021 16:42

Good Morning, Colorado, you're listening to the Daily Sun-Up with the Colorado Sun. It's Tuesday September 7th.   Today - The Bureau of Land Management recently herded mustangs into a holding pen in an effort to thin the herd of almost 900 roaming northwestern Colorado. Why? The BLM argues that drought has made life unsustainable for that many horses. Though not everyone involved agrees.   But first -- We'd like to thank our sponsor, Pinnacol Assurance. Pinnacol provides caring workers' comp insurance. They were also named one of the most community-minded companies in Colorado. Pinnacol gives back through community investments, scholarships and apprenticeships. At Pinnacol, caring is more than kindness. It's their powertool. See how they put care to work at Pinnacol dot com.   But before we begin, let's go back in time with some Colorado history adapted from historian Derek R Everett's book “Colorado Day by Day”:   Today we're going back to September 7th, 1968 when the town of Ridgway was transformed into Fort Smith, Arkansas for the filming of True Grit. Starring John Wayne, Glen Campbell, and Kim Darby, it earned Wayne his only Academy Award for the role of lawman Rooster Cogburn.   The film used a number of Colorado locations including Gunnison, Montrose, and Ouray. Wayne praised the “beautiful scenery” of the San Juans and raved about the steak at the Red Barn restaurant in Montrose.   Now, our feature story.   What could be more quintessentially Western than a wild horse roundup? The federal Bureau of Land Management used a helicopter to herd mustangs into a holding pen over several days in an effort to thin the herd of almost 900 roaming the hills canyons of far northwestern Colorado, where the BLM argues that drought has made life unsustainable for that many horses. But not everyone who caravaned to the roundup in the vast expanses near the Wyoming border agrees. And that made for a tense day on the range for Colorado Sun reporter Jennifer Brown.   Still dusty from the trip, she joined Sun colleague Kevin Simpson to talk about the experience, and the clashing views of how  to manage the expanding herd.    You can read more from Jennifer Brown about the wild mustang roundup and the controversy surrounding it at ColoradoSun.com.   And Before we go, here are a few stories that you should know about today:   Demand for housing in Colorado has never been stronger and the proof is in the building permits. Six of the top 20 biggest months since 1988 have occurred since October. But a construction labor shortage is keeping builders from meeting demand -- so much so that most new homes are sold before they are constructed. The Colorado Homebuilding Academy has graduated hundreds of new workers since it started in 2017, but that's still not enough to close the gap created as skilled laborers retired have or migrated to other work.    Federal unemployment benefits dried up on Saturday. There were about 107,000 Coloradans still drawing the benefit. Another 30,000 people lost a $300 per week federal “bonus.” Colorado has distributed about $11.2 billion in state and federal unemployment benefits since March 29, 2020, when people began making pandemic-related unemployment claims. About $7.8 billion of the total flowed from federal programs. Colorado had to borrow $1 billion to keep up with state benefits and interest begins accruing on that sum on Tuesday. Unemployment premiums paid by Colorado businesses will be raised to pay off that loan.   A plan to log 345 acres of federal forest on Grand Mesa may have less of an impact on 30 miles of Nordic ski trails after forest managers and the Grand Mesa Nordic Council met to brainstorm on Friday. Two possible solutions that came out of the meeting were to cut a ski trail adjacent to Scales Lake Road so that both skiers and logging trucks could use the area at the same time, and to suspend logging on Nov. 15 and finish the operation later in the winter, when the prime Nordic skiing season is over. Now the ideas must be proposed to the Montrose logging company that holds the contracts. Logging near the Skyway trail system is expected to begin on schedule in October.   For more information on all of these stories, visit our website, www.coloradosun.com. Howdy partners, it’s been a while since we last met up on our Western trail. Why not saddle up again and join Jeff The Kid, Itchy Trigger Finger Graham and Snake Eyes Neil? We are going to ride along and jaw about True Grit. The version we are discussing is the 1969 version for which John Wayne won the Best Actor Oscar. Indeed, his performance as the mean no nonsense lawman who likes to bend an elbow has been a role model for our Jeff all his life. True Grit came out just a year after the release of Charles Portis’ original novel and became one of the top ten highest grossing films of 1969. We look at why it was successful, what is it about the movie that appeals to your At The Flicks team and why it still retains such a high reputation today. What you may find surprising, as we did, is how troubled the production was. Some of the original casting choices walked before filming started, or asked for so much money the budget couldn’t accommodate their request. Then there were the on set arguments and the refusal of some stars to work with director Henry Hathaway ever again. All this detail and more can be found here. As an added bonus, we talk about the real life inspiration for Rooster Cogburn and below you will find a link to an old silent movie called The Bank Robbery in which he appears. So, stop being a coffee boiler (yes Neil that means you) and ride along for this rip roaring adventure. We enjoyed making it and hope you enjoying listening to it. Let us know and we may let you ride the trail with us for future episodes of Rustlers’ Roundup. See you next time amigos.

We live in an era of remakes and sequels. With that mind, Corey (@coreyrstarr) and Jonathan (@berkreviews) realized there were several films they've seen and loved that were, in fact, remakes of older movies. Thus, the theme for August became Originals! That is to say movies that have been remade that either Jonathan or Corey hasn't seen the source material but has seen the remake. This required a bit of research to pick the movies for this month, but the two did a great job of finding some real classics they have never seen. August will have five episodes so Corey got to pick three movies to Jonathan's two. As far as the podcast goes, each episode features an in-depth review of the movie for the week. They begin with a spoiler-free review before diving in completely after the needed spoiler warning. However, before getting into the review of the week, Jonathan and Corey discuss what other movies they've seen since the last episode as well as anything else they feel like discussing. To help them decide which of the many films to watch each month they started creating themes for them all. Week 5 - True Grit (1969) Corey and Jonathan really love the Jeff Bridges led, Coen Brothers directed, 2010 film True Grit. Neither are that familiar with John Wayne and despite neither loving The Searchers (1959), they decided it made sense to watch the original True Grit (1969). The movie is directed by Henry Hathaway and it stars Wayne, Kim Darby, and Glen Campbell where Rooster Cogburn is hired to "help a stubborn teenager track down her father's murderer in Indian territory." --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/berkreviewscom-moviecasts/support

If you would like to reach me my contact info is on black man with a gun dot com         I have discovered that the best people in my life, listen to this show.   I didn’t go to the SHOT Show because I didn’t have a plan. I could go, spend the money, see folks in the industry that I love but couldn’t motivate myself to do it.   I am trying to do something more than just beg for money and look like I am doing something. I want to really make a difference. I’m older now, don’t like wasting time, yours or mine.   You with me on that?   This show is dedicated to the guys that have survived to sport the gray hair. Fellas, don’t be ashamed, don’t get stressed out about being older, or not looking like you did when you were 25. Going to talk about middle age a little on this show and let you know its better than OK. Its going to be our redemption song. Maybe it’s the Jamaican coffee but I am feeling mellow, so this show is going to stay low key. This show might put some of you 5-11 shorts, tactical vest chest wearing, never been in combat, 3 pt slinging call of duty addicted, adrenaline junkies to sleep but that is alright, this is for the OG’s.   This is for the fathers of adult children, the men that remember who Walter Cronkite was, watched the Jetsons, the Beverly Hillbillies, got a transistor radio for Christmas, remember when the Dick van Dyke show wasn’t a reference to a girl on girl porno flick, saw Johnny Carson on TV, JFK, and the Beatles. Fellas, I was born in the same year as Wesley Snipes, Tom Cruise, Matthew Broderick, Axl Rose, Ralph Fiennes, Demi Moore, Jim Carrey, and Sheryl Crow. The year was 1962. I survived civil rights, school busing, and some stuff that I can’t even speak about. You should be proud to have made it too. I know if you are active on the net, facebook, forums etc, the younger guys rule for the most part and you can feel kinda out of it. I am here to tell you, its all good. We were young once too. If they are fortunate that might make it to our age. It made me think about the movie The Unforgiven and the Shootist, Rooster Cogburn and the movies where the old guys still got it. When I started in security and then law enforcement I was trained with and carried a smith and Wesson model 19. That means I used the fabled speed loaders extensibly. Courses were really static practical pistol courses back then with a lot of time and barricades. I carried a revolver in my travels prior abroad too, I switched to Browning Hi-Power however when I started doing executive personal protection details in Central and Latin America and the Middle East. The coveted trainers were the now gone guys, Charles Taylor, Jeff Cooper and their disciples. Masaad Ayoob was there too, but he was the smarter one. He dealt with the mind more than the macho. He has progressed and kept up with the times unlike many of the old dudes.   It was the age of the .45. You weren’t cool if you carried a 9mm but I usually did because it was easier to obtain 9mm internationally, and made a smaller footprint. Who was the gringo looking for .45 caliber ammunition esse? I trained ivy league types going into hostile environment, I qualified police and security officers for duty. I shared some of my mistakes carrying in countries where it was illegal for a foreigner to be armed. I shared stories of what happens when the feces hits the oscillating device. By the time I got to the Far east, I was using the Glock 17 first generation of course! In the 90’s I opened a business to help security guards qualify for armed duty and the new gun owner be safer that bombed. The guards didn’t want training they just wanted permission to carry so they could get paid higher than the unarmed post. Most hated firearms, didn’t know about gun rights, history or the sports involved.   I’ve actually hit more bad guys when I was driving in the protective details I was on that I have shot people but that is something for another time.   I was checking out the AR-15 world and on the rifle front, I am kinda lacking. I carried an uzi and a HK MP-5 a few times when I wasn’t the advance or on hot seat. I carried an M-16A1 back in corps. All back in the days of wine and roses of course.   Today, I hear the same arguments I did back in 1991 when I started my firearms training company. I think that is why I am so melancholy, been doing this stuff a long time and didn’t win the war.   Still hear folks talking about 9 mm over the .45.   For the record, I agree that the 1911 has its place but your choice for a self-defense side arm should be a newer polymer, double stacked something. We used to say if you need more than two rounds you are in combat and have the wrong firearm anyway. Well, I have since understood that bad guys have evolved and become more tribal. You are likely to have multiple attackers, a mob or a gang and need that spare magazine. Folks don’t stay down when shot. They don’t surrender if you don’t stop them and life in general is just going to suck during and after the incident so get over it, get through it and survive. Everything is not combat though. You can’t live in a Call of Duty condition. So listen up you wanna-bee, mall ninjas, keyboard commandoes, three gun gear nerds, if you decide to get a concealed carry permit, its not a hunting permit on people that piss you off. All threats don’t require lethal force. If you can you can leave, leave. If someone hurts your feelings, insults you wife, live with it. I am saying this because just it just seems to be a rash of stupid people making the news. Too many immature, untrained and unskilled guys out there itching for a gunfight. The only person I know out there teaching you how not to end up on the news, on YouTube, and in jail through necessary judicious use of force curriculum is Massad. I know you bought the firearm, You got the magazines, the pouches, the belts, the pants with the pockets, you got ammo for days, but every day is not combat.

Special thanks to Lindsey Blodgett, who commissioned this podcast by virtue of captaining her Bald Move Fantasy Football League team, "Vamonos Pests" to ultimate victory. She claims a podcast for 2016's Hell or High Water, as her prize. A modern western about bankers robbing the poor of their land and property rights, Hell stars Chris Pine and Ben Foster as outlaws who plan to rob the banks back. They are opposed by Texas lawman Jeff Bridges, who dusted off his Rooster Cogburn character from True Grit to tell this minimalist morality play with some surprising emotional depths. This film is a real showcase for the actors involved, and the performances and dialog are Hell's foremost charm; it was written by Taylor Sherridan fresh off his WGA win for Sicario. This week we’re taking another trip back to the Old West with The Coen Brothers’ 2010 remake of True Grit. This story follows 14 year old Mattie Ross as she sets out to see her father’s killer brought to justice. With the aid of Deputy U.S. Marshal Reuben J. "Rooster" Cogburn and Texas Ranger LaBoeuf, Mattie tracks the killer and his gang across the Indian Territory of Arkansas and to their mountain hideout. In the end, Mattie gets her revenge but is bitten by a venomous snake and has to be quickly carried back to civilization by Rooster Cogburn. This is a wonderful film that was released to much critical acclaim. The back and forth between Cogburn and LaBoeuf sets the tone for their relationship throughout the film. Who played a better Rooster Cogburn, Jeff Bridges or John Wayne? How spectacular is Hailee Steinfeld in this film? Can you believe this was her first major film role, at age 13? What are the chances the Coens will make a remake of Rooster Cogburn? This movie is great and if you haven’t watched the 1969 original make sure you check that out as well.

Something happened on tonight's podcast, and without the help of alcohol, Justin and Krissy just got totally silly and WEIRD. J blames it on the coffee, while K blames it on her ADD. Crazy analogies and metaphors ensue, including but not limited to Barbra Streisand as an octopus (?), Seth Rogen's poor-by-comparison turn as an amorphous paraplegic sea creature (??), an imagined conversation between Jay Chou and Rooster Cogburn, and ZOMBIE SELENA!! Much like the former of these two movies, not much makes sense (but we have fun anyway). This podcast is rated PG-13!
