A wonderful fun-filled show this week on BEHIND THE LENS as I get to celebrate the remarkable work of two very talented longtime friends, writer/director DAVE BOYLE and actor/producer KELLY GRANT. First up is my prerecorded exclusive interview with writer/director Dave Boyle going in-depth discussing his smash hit Netflix series HOUSE OF NINJAS! Known best for his films, diving into an eight-episode series – shot in Japan and in Japanese – is new territory for Dave and he more than delivers. Knowing Dave since his first film 18 years ago, with all he's done as a director, writer, writer/director, HOUSE OF NINJAS outshines everything that's come before! However, a real joy for me is seeing his steady growth as a filmmaker and storyteller, which brings him to this moment and this series. In the first half of the interview, we break down story, character, and casting (including cat labor laws in Japan) before moving into the technical aspect of the series production. And then we hop into the Easter spirit a bit early as actor/producer KELLY GRANT is live talking about her new film, the fun-filled and bloody horror comedy EASTER BLOODY EASTER; her first feature as a producer and a lead actor. A horror comedy with a killer jackalope and killer rabbits, this is one film you want to find in your Easter basket this year. Listen as Kelly and I delve into her work producing and acting in this lo budget/no budget/micro budget treat as well as her thoughts on acting, self-taping, and the ever-changing film/television/theatre landscape. It is the perfect conversation for those new to the profession or just wanting to glean information to up your own game. http://eliasentertainmentnetwork.com
The Netflix series House of Ninjas has become a hit show, rising to #1 in the streaming service's top 10 list. The story follows the Tawara family, who have been ninjas, or shinobi, for generations. Tragically, the oldest son and brother disappeared six years before in a battle with their rivals, leading the Tawaras to stop being ninjas. But the family must fight together again as the rival clan gets more powerful and threatens the entire country. Showrunner Dave Boyle was first brought on as showrunner for House of Ninjas by an executive at Netflix Japan, who knew he was familiar with the culture. Dave's second language is Japanese, which he studied as a Mormon missionary in Australia. He had written and directed a few independent Japanese American and Japanese language films, such as Man from Reno, Daylight Savings and Surrogate Valentine, which all took place in the U.S. This was his first experience with shooting anything in Japan. He was drawn to the tone of House of Ninjas, which combines both drama, action and violence with comedy and warmhearted playfulness. “Tone was the reason why we all wanted to make this project. It's more than the plot mechanics and the story. It was all about creating this atmosphere, this tone that an audience could sink into and enjoy for many, many episodes. And so I think that tone was something that we were talking about from the very, very get-go and something that we really wanted to nail and get right.” Once he was on board, Dave began working on the preproduction and show bible for House of Ninjas. The show bible had to be written in three weeks, which is a very fast process, especially since Dave knew the show's foundation required a deep understanding of shinobi culture and history. He found the preproduction process in Japan to be much different from the U.S., with casting happening even before the show's scripts were written. The script format in Japan read from right to left, and the top half of the page is left blank for the director to draw storyboards and a shotlist, as a clear way for the director to show what they're planning to do. House of Ninjas is available on Netflix. Great TV can truly come from anywhere....On this episode we dive into a compelling new series that is streaming on Netflix now from the other side of the globe. It's time for 'House of Ninjas'.Ninjas have fascinated the world with their mysterious and fearsome physical abilities, and have been brought to the screen countless times. What if these ninjas still operated in the shadows in modern Japan? The answer to this question can be found in Netflix's unconventional ninja spectacle, fusing lightning-fast realistic ninja action scenes with steely suspense as we track the story of the Tawara family, the last shinobi clan. It had abandoned its roots after an incident in the past, but now the family must take on the greatest crisis in Japanese history, one that threatens to shake the nation to its core.'House of Ninjas' grips you from the opening frames and never lets you go. We had the unique pleasure of sitting down with showrunner Dave Boyle to talk about the origins of the show and so very much more....
“I wanted to be a filmmaker for as long as I can remember,” says Dave Boyle. “I wanted to be a writer-director but after I made my first couple of independent films, I was making more of my living as an editor. I didn't really start pursuing screenwriting as a professional until I had done a couple of micro-budget films.” This would include films like Big Dreams Little Tokyo, White on Rice, Surrogate Valentine, Daylight Savings, and Man From Reno. “That's when I became passionate about writing as the end result. I think it was always a passion of mine, but from the beginning, I had this sort of omnivorous jack-of-all-trades approach until those things melted away.” This renaissance approach eventually led Boyle to the new Netflix series, House of Ninjas. The story follows The Tawara family, the last shinobi clan. The description reads, “It had abandoned its roots after an incident in the past, but now the family must take on the greatest crisis in Japanese history, one that threatens to shake the nation to its core.” “As I started focusing more on writing, I wrote my couple of spec scripts and finished Man from Reno, that's when I started getting more jobs as a screenwriter. The passion was always there but it wasn't the focus of my career for a long time.” Being an editor and director also shaped his writing. “You end up in trouble in editing because you realize if you had done this and this while writing, I wouldn't be in this pickle right now. It definitely taught me a lot about structure. I was making some arrogant mistakes that I thought I could get through directing and editing.” This three-prong approach also changed the perspective of what he liked to write. “Eventually I realized the stuff that I was addicted to reading was the stuff I should be writing. Initially, I saw myself as a slice of life [screenwriter] for human dramas, but in everyday life, I love thrillers and detective stories. Genre, that's my true passion and that's what I should be writing, instead of fitting a square peg into a round hole.” Want more? A jam-packed and eclectic show on this episode of BEHIND THE LENS as director MARC MARRIOTT talks about his new feature, the delightful fish-out-of-water tale, TOKYO COWBOY. Then we shift gears and get serious talking with writer/director JEREMY PION-BERLIN about his new documentary FAILURE TO PROTECT which takes a look at three families whose children have been taken away from them by CPS and who are now embroiled in the child welfare system and the court system. First up, take a listen as director MARC MARRIOTT discusses his new film TOKYO COWBOY. And let me just say right up front, going in I knew I was going to be a fan of the film thanks to a script by the fabulous Dave Boyle and Ayako Fujitani. I've been on Dave's bandwagon since the world premiere of his first feature film and were he not shooting in Japan right now, he would be joining us as well. A terrific fish out-of-water story with the melding of cultures, wonderful performances, nuanced character construction and character development, stunning locations, and a lot of heart, TOKYO COWBOY is an absolute delight. Then we're talking about a hot-button documentary with director and editor JEREMY PION-BERLIN and his film FAILURE TO PROTECT. The film focuses on five parents whose children have been taken away from them by CPS and who are now embroiled in the child welfare system and the court system in an effort to be reunited with their children. It's an interesting multi-year look at the system from the perspective of these parents (and some of the children who are now in foster care) as well as interviews with various social workers, directors of Child Family Services, psychologists, attorneys, and even the presiding judge of the Los Angeles County Juvenile Dependency Court. An interesting conversation with Jeremy on his process in subject matter selection, families to speak with and focus on, expert interviews, and a big thing with any documentary – the editing process. http://eliasentertainmentnetwork.com

Hey guys! I thought instead of clogging your feeds with Kickstarter updates about my movie, it might be nice to introduce you to the talent behind I Will Make You Mine. So I've taken The Actor's Diet Podcast out of retirement for episode 101 with one of its stars, musician Yea-Ming Chen Before filming this summer, Yea-Ming and I actually didn't know each other very well, because our characters never crossed paths in the Surrogate Valentine sequel, Daylight Savings. So the "Yea-Ming Chen" character I wrote for her is a very fictionalized version that she is playing. I loved getting to know her better over the shoot, and now I REALLY got to know her through this podcast interview. In this episode we talk a lot about rice, constipation (sorry), eggs and soy sauce, congee oatmeal, soup, her favorite restaurant in the Bay Area (Vien Huong), flax milk, and the grey areas of body image. I'm not sure when I'll have time to record another episode but there are actually a lot of past podcast guests involved in the movie! Dave Boyle is my producer, actors include Goh Nakamura (who also does the podcast theme music), Christy Meyers, Jeff Meacham, Joy Osmanski, and Hilah Johnson did the behind-the-scenes filming. Love you guys, keep in touch @mslynnchen on Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook. xo Lynn
The third episode of Club Natters focuses on financial matters, specifically fundraising and managing money once you have raised it. Special guest Dave Boyle helps guide us through the key elements of fundraising: what they entail, what impacts they make and how you can make the most of them. We also sat down with England Rugby star James Haskell to chat about his experiences with grassroot sports. Finally we chat through the biggest challenges small clubs face
On this week's episode, we have a special guest: musician Goh Nakamura joins us to talk about the films Surrogate Valentine and its sequel Daylight Savings, directed by Dave Boyle. In both movies, Goh plays a version of himself as he travels around the country on a music tour. Several women enter his life, including Lynn Chen playing his high school crush, Ayako Fujitani as an ex-girlfriend, and Jane Lui as a friend who catches his eye -- but it's him and Yea-Ming Chen, another real-life musician playing a version of herself, who seem to have the most natural chemistry. Goh tells us about how two non-actors rehearsed their way to become a believable onscreen couple. He also lets us imagine what it would've been like if his character was named Joe Nakamura. But best of all, Brian asks: um, didn't you guys tell us (your fans) in your Daylight Savings interviews that you wanted to continue the collaboration and do a part 3? If nothing else, this episode serves to remind everyone that it doesn't matter how many years it takes or many awards Dave Boyle wins, a promise is a promise. Saturday School is a podcast where we teach your unwilling children about Asian American pop culture history. Season 2 explores Asian American romance in film.
