What Connects Andy Reid to Bruce Lee? (#303, 16 Apr. 2025)

Two words, "Don't Judge". Could an entire philosophy arise from two words? This episode explores the connection between Andy Reid's success and those two words. I thought about those words after rereading Shannon Lee book about her father's philosophy in her book, Be Water, My Friend. She outlined the Parable of the Empty Cup, a story that Lee frequently used to illustrate the power of keeping an open mind and being open to the unexpected. As I read that parable, two words came to mind, "Don't Judge", a two word philosophy that Andy Reid uses to guide his approach to coaching and teaching. This episode explores the synchronistic philosophy connecting these two amazing men.

“Check Your Ego at the Door”. Those words were scrawled on a piece of paper and taped to the door of A&M Studios on the night of January 28, 1985. The story behind that command is the subject of director Bao Nguyen's (“Be Water”) thoroughly captivating new Netflix documentary “The Greatest Night in Pop” about the once-in-a-lifetime event that drew dozens of the world's biggest pop stars together on one night to record what would become the ‘80s phenomenon “We Are the World”.   Bao joins Ken on the pod to describe everything that went into the making of “We Are the World” and how he went about telling the story using a highly creative and seamless blend of archival footage, interviews and recreations. What prompted singer Harry Belafonte's dream to galvanize the pop community to raise funds to combat the Ethiopian famine and led to this one magical, high stakes evening? How did the legendary producer Quincy Jones (who posted the note) manage to bring out the best in everyone and keep the trains running on time? And how did Bao approach his portrayal of the complicated and flawed superstar Michael Jackson, who co-wrote the song with Lionel Ritchie?   It turns out that “The Greatest Night in Pop” makes for a great night in documentary viewing, too. ““The Greatest Night in Pop” is available now on Netflix.    Hidden Gem:  The Emperor's Naked Army Marches On   Follow: @thegreatestnightinpop on Instagram and @baomnguyen on twitter/X @topdocspod on Instagram and twitter/X   The Presenting Sponsor of "Top Docs" is Netflix.

Martial arts is a metaphor for life. Did you ever think about that? It requires a fine balance of the body, mind, and spirit - a keen understanding of people and their intentions, skill, flexibility, wisdom, focus, anticipation, practice, and after you are hit to the ground with this challenge or that level of adversity, you muster up the courage and willpower to stand up and fight again. That is what living is all about. Today, I am joined by a woman who lives by this philosophy more than anyone I know. She is Shannon Emery Lee. She's famously known as Bruce Lee's daughter but she is SO much more than that and is carving her path and place in this world in such an authentic way. Across the globe, billions revere her father who made his mark as an incredibly talented martial artist, filmmaker, actor, and philosopher. But to her, he was simply Dad. To say she had big shoes to fill is an understatement, and to think her father's shoes were never worn again when he died at the age of 32 and little Shannon was just 4 years old. Shannon has been a keen martial artist throughout life in her own way. She's also an American singer, actress, producer and entrepreneur. After her father's death, her mother Linda Lee Cadwell left Hong Kong and raised her in California along with her brother Brandon Lee, who also died far too young during an accident while shooting for a film. People tried to tell her that acting was not good for the family but Shannon decided to maintain the legacy of her father and learned martial arts from his students. She then made her debut into film and TV with movies like Enter the Eagles and Martial Law. She endeavours to preserve and promote her father's legacy as the president of the Bruce Lee Foundation and Bruce Lee Enterprises. Her book Be Water, My Friend pays homage to her father's life and teachings, and her most important role is being a dedicated mother to her daughter Wren. Welcome to the show, Shannon! Let's bow in ceremoniously to this interview so that we are both aware and present. Meet My Guest: INSTAGRAM: @therealshannonlee

Whether we realize it or not, everyday we receive subtle messages from places like social circles, ad companies, and even business moguls telling us that we're not enough. That somehow, what we value and what we think is a meaningful and worthy pursuit is inconsequential. These influences can cause us to make career and lifestyle choices that we think are in our best interests. Once we are consciously aware of these influences however, we may discover that many of the decisions we are being persuaded to make are actually in their best interests, not ours. In today's episode I will explain why it is so important that you don't discount the actions and pursuits that you consider valuable and what steps you can take to live your truth even when others aren't able to share your vision or your passion. Book Vs. Movie: Dragon: The Bruce Lee StoryThe Shannon Lee Book/Memoir Vs. the 1993 Biopic Bruce Lee is one of the biggest martial artists of all time and created the style Jeet Kune Do, which caused controversy within the martial arts community. As a Chinese-American, he wanted to spread the word to anyone eager to learn and not keep secrets. He also believed in pushing himself to the limit in everything he did, which caused friction in Hollywood and Hong Kong film communities. Born Lee Jun-fan November 27, 1940, in San Francisco and raised in Hong Kong by parents who tried to keep their smart, energetic son who would get into street fights in the 1950s. After being sent back to America to get his act together, Lee became more interested in school (mainly history and philosophy) and brought his new martial arts ideas to eager Bay Area students to Seattle. After demonstrating his new brand of Kung Fu in a 1964 championship in Long Beach, California, Hollywood came calling for Lee. His early years as a child movie actor in Hong Kong came in handy with his series The Green Hornet, playing sidekick Kato. Though it only lasted one season, it helped gain a worldwide fan base. Heading back to his childhood home, Lee produced, wrote, and acted in several films that are now considered Kung Fu classics, including The Big Boss & Fists of Fury. When he passed mysteriously on July 20, 1973, he was still producing what would become his biggest film, Enter the Dragon. His death at the age of 32 by Cerebral Edema has been explored dozens of times over the last fifty years, with the latest theory being he had too much water in his system, and his kidneys could not function properly. The irony is that we are pairing the 1993 movie Dragon: The Bruce Lee Story (starring Jason Scott Lee and Lauren Holly) with Shannon Lee's 2020 book Be Water My Friend: The Teachings of Bruce Lee. One of his key philosophies was to “be like water” in dealing with all aspects of life. Linda Lee wrote her account of Lee's life in 1989's The Bruce Lee Story, co-written with her ex-husband. (We have thoughts about his later Lee books and claims!) Shannon helped produce the excellent documentary “30 For 30: Be Water” and How Bruce Lee Changed the World. Our rituals, self-care and reflections are never limited only to the New and Full Moon We are a part of the great mysterious cycle of nature. The structures and rules placed on us by our modern patriarchal world shall not contain us. ♓ Pisces New Moon Sunday, February 19, 2023 11:05 pm PST Pisces Esoteric Phrase:  I leave my [Cosmic] home, and turning back, I save. Pisces Tarot Cards: The Moon, Page/Queen of Cups, the Hanged One Pisces Body Parts:  Feet, Water in the Body, Auric Field   On the podcast this week we are joined by special guest Caitlin Muelder.  In light of the Pisces New Moon, Caitlin shares with us deep-felt wisdom in a talk I titled:  "Be Water, My Friend".  In this mini-lesson, Caitlin starts out with an beautiful invocation to welcome-in Pisces.  Then, she connects us to the three ruling planets for Pisces: Jupiter – Traditional ruling planet Neptune – Modern ruling planet Pluto – Esoteric ruling planet A little bit about Caitlin:  Caitlin's interest in astrology has been life long. She grew up in the midwest with lovingly pragmatic parents who both worked in education and academia. They've generously supported her interest in the Esoteric Arts while offering “a healthy dose” of skeptical analysis. This encouraged Caitlin to pursue occult interests while remaining grounded in reason. She endeavors to apply a scientific lens and bring “critical research perspective” to her work, with the goal of accumulating empirical evidence, in an esoteric field of study. Caitlin aims to help clients make the link for themselves between the profound and the practical. Mentored under Heidi Rose Robbins since 2016, Caitlin is immensely proud to be a member of Heidi's Astrology team.  Caitlin has many different astrology offerings available through her website. And here is a link to Caitlin's instagram.  :) To help support my work and the work of those who join us on the podcast, please consider becoming a Patreon Supporter.   OTHER LINKS Sign-up for Mailing List + Newsletter Chariot Year - 2023:  A Return Back Home – Workshop Podcast: iTunes, Spotify, or Podbean About Jeff Hinshaw Patreon for Cosmic Cousins Astrology Mentorship Astrology Reading Tarot Healing Session

Caroline talks to Christian Sands, a friend, and Multi-Grammy Nominated Pianist. This episode is filled with amazing, moving glimpses into his working process, and life as an artist, musician, and human. We discuss managing life's pressures, connecting with yourself, understanding that it's okay to not be okay sometimes, and making adjustments when necessary. Sands also shares a personal experience he had with Warren Buffett and the life lesson that he learned and carries with him to this day. Christian Sands Bio Often, the term prodigy is applied with minimal context. In the case of jazz pianist Christian Sands, it is appropriate. He has studied piano since the age of 3 and began composing at five years old. By ten, he was performing across the United States.  After years of formal music education, he became a protege of the great pianist and educator, Dr. Billy Taylor. Like his mentor, Sands is devoted to performance, community involvement and music education. His initial break came when he was asked to be a member of world renowned bassist', Christian McBride's quintet (Inside Straight) at the Jazz Standard in New York City. After, he collaborated with McBride in a celebrated trio and which gained a Grammy-nomination in 2013 with their release, “Out Here.”  Over the years, Sands has performed, collaborated and written with artists like Oscar Peterson, Herbie Hancock, Dee Dee Bridgewater, David Sanborn, Cécile Mclorin Salvant, Coolio, A Tribe Called Quest, Robin Thicke and Taylor Dayne to name a few as well as scoring music for television and film. With multiple successful albums under his belt, his latest project, “Be Water” was nominated in 2021 for Best Jazz album in the 52nd NAACP Image Awards and Best Instrumental Composition in the 63rd Annual Grammy Awards. #musicians #listen #playing #kid #kids #podcast #type Resources: Christian Sands: iTunes - Album - Be Water https://music.apple.com/us/album/be-water/1500308161 Christian Sands: iTunes - Artist Link - https://music.apple.com/us/artist/christian-sands/272387208 Ryan Sands: iTunes - Album - Standing on the Edge of Tomorrow https://music.apple.com/us/album/standing-on-the-edge-of-tomorrow/1621900581 Podcast Jingle by Real Topeka People Real Topeka People: Spotify - https://spoti.fi/3Np78CY Real Topeka People: TikTok - https://vm.tiktok.com/ZMLHgoYuc/

On this platform and others to come, I will continue to expand upon the tradition we started with the Insecurity podcast as I seek out the leading minds in the tech industry and beyond. I am always looking for fun people who may break things every now and again. In 20 years in the ecosystem of Data Protection and Cybersecurity I have toured the world extolling the virtues of Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning and how, when applied to information security, these technologies can wrong-foot the bad guys. Whether in person, live virtual events or podcasting, I get to interview interesting people doing interesting things all over the world of technology and the extended world of hacking. Sometimes, that means hacking elections or the coffee supply chain... other times that means social manipulation or the sovereign wealth fund of a national economy. Wherever I go, my job is all about talking with the people who build, manage or wreck the systems that we have put in place to make the world go round... If you tuned in to any of my previous podcasts, there's great news…! pm73media is here! I will be bringing the same kind of energy and array of guests you know and love. Best part? Today we are going to cover the third technique to help us identify and eliminate unnecessary complexities in our lives that do not benefit us on our journey towards growth and success. Technique number 3, Simplify Your Mental Landscape, is going to cover a literally mind blowing way we can start to make it easier for us to hone in our mental capacity on the activities in our lives that truly matter - working towards our self development goals for the benefit of ourselves and also just importantly continuing to develop ourselves for those around us. As the martial arts icon and philosopher Bruce Lee once said, we must “empty our cup so it can be filled. We must become devoid to gain totality.” And to this end, simplifying our mental landscape is a key step towards preparing ourselves to acquire new knowledge, and to begin integrating this new knowledge in our daily life in the form of useful new skills. In this episode, we examine the recent history of martial arts from 1900 to present, seeing how it has changed over the years.  In our exploration of this history, we see that a martial art becomes popular upon the merging of two cultures, the additions to the Olympic Games, and in recently in movies like "Enter the Dragon."  In our martial art practice, we look at how the basic punch and front kick have changed as examples of starting to use science and physics to explain velocity and power.   We also dive into the basic arm bar grappling move to add to your maneuvers.  Lastly, we explain the quote from the late Bruce Lee: "Be Water, My Friend."

Our thoughts are often scattered by the number of different responsibilities that we have to keep track of, that any one of them is always in danger of not receiving our best effort. Before taking on any helpful tips or tricks regarding how to focus, we first need to explore the issues underlying our lack of focus, which often stem from our sense of self. This podcast was inspired by an article about the writings and philosophies of Bruce Lee. Lee was obsessed with learning how to make the most of his life from a young age. This is reflected in the countless hours he spent reading books; by the age of 30, he had amassed a library of thousands of titles, the majority of which were on self-help, philosophy, and martial arts. Lee would record the key lessons and messages from his countless hours of studying in an handwritten journal.Bruce was more than just a theorist; he was also a doer. As a result, any important lesson he could grasp intellectually, he would apply in his daily life, with martial arts serving as his main vehicle. This episode contains 6 of Bruce Lee's philosophies that resonated with me and can be applied to your everyday life.Link to "Be Water, My Friend: The True Teachings of Bruce Lee" - https://amzn.to/3Bc4f11Link to "SUMO (Shut Up, Move On): The Straight-Talking Guide to Creating and Enjoying a Brilliant Life" by Paul McGee - https://amzn.to/3B5WpGlYoutube link to Marisa Peer - How to avoid rejection and get connection: Marisa Peer at TEDxGoodenoughCollege - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zeDt9dgFXFk&t=1s
