Today Simon and Mackelly discuss difficult topics such as torture and self-harm. Please seek help for yourself or reach out to a friend who might be struggling with thoughts of self-harm.Chapter Review:Reek has been cleaned up and is pretending to be a prince of the Iron Islands. He is granted admission to Moat Cailin where he discovers his countrymen in a sorry state. They're sick, tired, and losing hope. They recognize Theon for what he was (Balon Greyjoy's son) and what he is (Ramsay's dog). He offers them terms: stay and die or be fed, treated, and freed to return to the Stony Shore. He has intel that Victarion is not coming back and that they've been abandoned and forgotten. This last silences dissent and the men agree. Only 63 men leave the towers to the incredulity of Ramsay's forces who felt they'd been fighting far more. Theon has a flash of pride for the ironborn.Ramsay is pleased with Theon and rewards him with meat, wine, and an upgrade in his quarters. Show notes: For this episode I attended the first ever MidSouth Mega Con at the Memphis Sports & Event Center located in the Memphis Fairgrounds. I was at this inaugural con to man the Mid-South Cartoonists Association and record a few interviews over the holiday weekend. I got to talk toons with local artists including Ryan Ladner, Shane Luttrell, That Katie Jones, Peter Melonas, Dr. Kevin Thorn, MSCA president Kevin L. Williams, and MCFC co-organizer/"Geek Tank Radio" co-host Brandon Olmstead. Kev brought along some of his Muppet friends- Kermit, Fozzie, and Grover. We handed out a lot of MSCA stickers and postcards, and even sold a few zines! There was lots of great cosplay, including our table neighbors The 731 Ghostbusters and Star Trek fan group Station Shelby. We loved getting t meet the amazing animals from the Soft Landings of Tennessee waterfowl rescue, and the awesomely chill pup from the GameOver Arcade in Southaven, MS. We also got to meet actors Reb Brown/Captain America, Sean Patrick Flanery/Young Indiana Jones, and legendary voice actor Billy West/Ren & Stimpy. (You can see pics on our MSCA Facebook page.)The space was huge, clean, and had great lighting and A/C. There's plenty of room for this con to expand for next year. The Memphis weather was definitely frightful outside, but it was dry and comfortable inside. This fall Memphis Comic Expo will be at this same event center in September. I'll have a table at DonnieCon for the first time in a few years. Between the pandemic, travel, and other show commitments I haven't been able to table there since probably 2018 at the AgCenter. Looking forward to MCX being at this new location. This Saturday, May 31st is the third annual Memphis Libraries Comic Con at the Benjamin L. Hooks Central Library - 3030 Poplar Avenue, Memphis, TN 38111. I'll be set up at this free event along with several MSCA members 10am-3pm. GOH is Chris Parnell. Oh, our next monthly dinner gathering at Garibaldi's Pizza is this Tuesday, June 3rd from 6-8pm, and our deadline to turn in art for next month's art show at Playhouse on the Square. They highlight a popular Facebook post comparing Andaz Maui and HR Maui, with opinions divided based on points cost and who's traveling with you. News-wise, they cover Hawaiian Airlines parting ways with Amex, a Citi to Wyndham 25% transfer bonus, Flying Blue dropping Delta award prices for 2026, and Aeroplan offering a 90% bonus on purchased points. Angie shared she's cutting back on card applications after a denial, while Mike celebrated scoring a 100k Chase Sapphire Preferred bonus. The main topic focused on the Chicago meetup, where despite weather and travel delays, most attendees made it thanks to their seasoned travel skills. Angie and Mike flew on AA (via Alaska for Mike), and stayed at the Hyatt Regency Chicago, using points and benefits like GOH awards and club access. Formal events included a Friday rooftop reception, Saturday learning sessions from travel experts, and a custom improv comedy show Saturday night. Unofficially, attendees self-organized through a Messenger chat for cruises, walking tours, karaoke, and hotel lobby meetups. Looking ahead, a fall meetup is planned with early access for their AT201 group and expanded capacity expected. Their takeaway tip? Often, research articles can feel distant, like the ideas are for a completely different world because you don't see how they apply to your teaching situation.  At the same time, you recognize that academic research in English language teaching is important to know about and understand – for yourself and your students. That's why I've reviewed the book, Teaching English to Second Language Learners in Academic Contexts: Reading, Writing, Listening, and Speaking, for you. It's definitely a gold mine if you teach academic English, but it's also worth a read even if you're not. Pourquoi un escalier peut-il être inconfortable ?

Choses à Savoir

Play Episode Listen Later Mar 13, 2025 2:23

Presentator is Jeroen Kelderman. Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day

Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day for November 23, 2024 is: negotiate • nih-GOH-shee-ayt • verb To negotiate is to discuss something formally in order to make an agreement. Negotiate can also mean, when applied to people or things in motion, "to get through, around, or over successfully." // The parties negotiated an agreement. // The trail is designed for an experienced skier who can negotiate unpredictable terrain. See the entry > Examples: "Once in relationships, millennials are keen to protect their personal interests—a change reflected in their embrace of prenuptial agreements, the unprecedentedly high rates at which they maintain separate bank accounts, and even in the way they negotiate domestic affairs and disputes." — Anastasia Berg and Rachel Wiseman, What Are Children For?: On Ambivalence and Choice, 2024 Did you know? Negotiate found its way into the English language from the Latin verb negōtiārī, meaning "to do business, trade, or deal." Since its arrival, this word has developed a variety of applications. The "doing business" sense is still going strong: in addition to its most common use in situations where formal decisions (such as a price to be paid) are made by way of discussion, negotiate is also used to talk about the transfer or conversion of money, as in the phrase "negotiate a check." Negotiate has applications outside of commerce, too; it is sometimes used to mean "to successfully travel along or over," as when a cyclist is said to "negotiate mountainous terrain."

See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Thanks to Jered Jones for providing the music for this episode. https://www.jeredjones.com/ Transcript: [ 00:00:00] Good morning listeners today is February 15th, 2024. And you're listening to the daily decrypt. I've got a quick episode for you today. We're just going to touch on a three stories. One duck, duck go has some new updates, which we're pretty excited about. A company called app dome is re-inventing geo compliance for mobile security. And for the nerdier folk, the bumblebee is back. This is a new wave of cyber threats. So let's dive right in. [00:01:00] All right. So our first article comes from bleeping computer and it discusses duck. Duck goes introduction. Of an end to end encrypted sync and backup feature for their privacy centric browser. Dr. Goh has been a beacon for those seeking to protect their online activities from prying eyes. And it's known for its search engine that promises not to track users. Its latest update, introduces a sync and backup feature, which allows users to securely synchronize bookmarks passwords and email protection settings without the need for an account. Or by revealing any sensitive information to duck, duck go. We love this. This is a huge step towards separating your identity from what you do on the internet. So what sets this feature apart is its use of end-to-end encryption. And for those of you who aren't super savvy in the tech field, this means that. The data is encrypted in such a way that only the user can access it. Not even duck duck go can peek into the transferred information. This [00:02:00] ensures that personal data like passwords and bookmarks remain private and secure. Which is a significant step forward in preserving user privacy online. Duck duck go employs local encryption to store sensitive data on the user's device. And during synchronization between devices, this data remains encrypted. And because the decryption key is stored locally on your devices, your information is inaccessible to anyone, but you. Little caveat to that is. Your information is inaccessible to anyone, but you or anyone who has access to your devices. Make sure your devices are password protected. And go to sleep or lock after a reasonable amount of time. One minute might be too quick. Five minutes might be too quick, but. Get in the habit of locking your devices when you walk away from them. Another feature of this is the easy setup. Users can sync their data by scanning a QR code or entering a text code, bridging their digital life across windows, Mac iOS, iOS, and Android devices seamlessly. duck Duck go provides recovery codes in a PDF document, ensuring that [00:03:00] users can retrieve their data, even if their device is lost or stolen. We don't love QR codes overall, but if it's being provided by duck, duck, go. You should be pretty safe. Attackers will also have this information, so they might try to generate fake QR codes or fake PDFs, but I've never really seen syncing across devices without creating an account. So I'm pretty excited to give this a try if you're also excited to give this a try. The duck duck go browser is available for download on various platforms. Though the browser is still in beta. It's still very accessible. So go out there, give it a shot and let us know what you think on Twitter or Instagram. We'd love to hear from you. So up next, we're talking about a company. called app dome, which might be behind many of your apps already on your phone. They. Provide security features for apps across Android and iOS. This can mean security features such as end-to-end automation. [00:04:00] Mobile apps, security anti-fraud anti-malware anti-China antibody and geo compliance. Their sites are focused on the geo compliance part of that. they've come up with a groundbreaking feature set, which is designed to help mobile brands, verify user locations and detect fraudulent activities such as location spoofing. Or fake GPS, app usage, VPNs, and SIM swaps. These are common methods that are often employed to bypass geographical restrictions and mobile applications, which can pose a significant challenge to maintaining the integrity of mobile commerce and transaction data. This is great, but. I have to point out the irony of discussing this right after talking about not being tracked online. By duck, duck go. Geolocation is a tough thing to nail down. IP addresses are wildly inaccurate. And yeah, your location can be mapped using different apps. Like VPNs or. All kinds of other things. So this is huge for. Government regulation of data, [00:05:00] privacy, but might be bad news for protecting yourself and your privacy online. Tom Tovar, who is the CEO of abdom discusses? The struggle mobile brands face. In achieving true geo compliance. Traditional products in this space have suffered from a fragmented approach requiring complex software development, kit integrations, and a heavy lift from engineering teams. solution. A unified automated platform that integrates geo compliance with over 300 other mobile app defense features, streamlining the process and ensuring compatibility across the board. this next piece is drawing attention to recent activities of the notorious malware loader and initial access broker known as bumblebee. Bumblebee is back and its resurgence is marked by a sophisticated phishing campaign targeting us organizations with cleverly disguised. Voicemail themes, lures leading to malicious one drive URLs. So watch out for. Suspicious looking voicemails. And if you do [00:06:00] happen to click on one. it opens one drive. You know what to do. Proof point and enterprise security firm has traced these activities. Noting that the malicious URLs guide unsuspecting victims to a word document that impersonates the consumer electronics company humane. That's not very humane of them. These documents named in a deceptive manner like release Evans, hashtag 96 dot doc. Employ VBA macros to execute a chain of commands that eventually download and run the bumblebee loader. This development is particularly alarming considering Bumblebee's reputation for downloading and executing ransomware among other malicious payloads. bumblebee was first identified in March of 2022 and has been a tool for various crime where actors replacing older loaders, such as Basel loader. It's development is suspected to be under the wings of the Conti and trick bot cyber crime syndicates showcasing a continuous evolution in cyber crime tactics. Interestingly the return of bumblebee coincides with the [00:07:00] reappearance of malware variants, like crackpot, Xeloda, and Pika bot. Which is highlighting a broader wave of cyber threats. There's a lot of vulnerabilities that involve Microsoft office macros. So keep an eye out for. A office template you might download for free on the internet that when you open it, it prompts you to enable macros. It is going to try to convince you that you need to enable these macros to use this template. But I would advise against enabling macros since that pretty much gives. The word document. The ability to launch other programs to run code, to do anything that malware would need to do. Download a template. It asks you to enable macros, probably delete that template and look on a different site. Microsoft has also taken steps to disable macros in an unsecure way, but there's always ways around it. The article we're referencing also touches on a broader context with Malwarebytes uncovering phishing campaigns that mimic financial institutions. Tricking individuals into [00:08:00] downloading legitimate remote desktop software. Like any desk under false pretenses further enabling cyber criminals to exploit unsuspecting users. All right. So that's all we got for today, Thank you so much for listening. Give us a tweet if you like, what you've heard. We'd love to hear from you on Instagram. We're posting little highlight reels. And Yeah, your recommendation means a lot to us. So send this podcast to a friend. If you thought it was fun or valuable or anything. Talk to you more tomorrow.

Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day

Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day for March 30, 2023 is: golem • GOH-lum • noun Golem refers in Jewish folklore to an artificial humanoid being endowed with life. It can also refer to someone or something (such as a robot) resembling such a being. // She came to regard her punctilious supervisor as a golem who never had an unprogrammed thought in his life. See the entry > Examples: “There is no game like Cuphead. The passion project ... instantly set itself apart from the wide swath of 2D action games with its uncanny recreation of the 1930s cartoon aesthetic. ... There's no filler here, and every fight stands out as a memorable experience, from a bearded stone golem and his pack of evil gnomes to a train-riding cow who sees the business end of a pressure cooker only to keep on fighting.” — Russ Frushtick, Polygon.com, 30 June 2022 Did you know? The Hebrew ancestor of the word golem means “shapeless mass,” and the original mythical golems started as lumps of clay that were formed into figures and brought to life by means of a charm or a combination of letters forming a sacred word. In the Middle Ages, golems were thought to be the perfect servants; their only fault was that they were sometimes too literal or mechanical in fulfilling their masters' orders. In the 16th century, the golem was thought of as a protector of the Jews in times of persecution. But following its entrance into English, golem acquired a less friendly second sense, referring to a man-made monster that inspired many of the back-from-the-dead creations of classic horror fiction. These days, the word golem is frequently used in the gaming world for a variety of foes and beasties made of materials ranging from ice to iron to even, in one game, candy.

I'm switching things up a bit as we dive into the craziness of the holiday season! Giving you and super informative episode this week with Belle di Lorenzo, the founder of Goh!ddess. I was really excited to hear from Belle as she shares with us the ancient technique of pompoir. Pompoir is the sensual technique of training your vaginal walls to tighten, squeeze, and twist which can do all sorts of fun things to a penis or toy while maximizing vaginal orgasms. I feel in mainstream media we hardly ever talk about the female (or anyone who has a vagina) orgasms or pleasure which is why I was very curious to hear about this technique. Even if you are not a sex worker, Belle's expertise on the topic is so vast and she gives us some tips and tricks on how to achieve pompoir. Because of the lack of publicly-available knowledge out there on pompoir, Belle started her own program to teach people about pompoir, available on her website. Belle is graciously including a free guide on the art of pompoir (below) AND is throwing in $100 off her course to all Stripped by SIA listeners. In Session 185, AKA Inside JABA Series #11, I'm joined by Drs. Linda LeBlanc, Jeff Tiger, and Javier Virues-Ortega for a deep dive into automatically maintained behavior. This session was inspired by the study Javier and his colleagues published in the Spring 2022 issue of JABA (Virues-Ortega, Clayton, Perez-Bustamante, Gaerlan, and Fahmie, 2022).  In this episode, we discuss the nature of, and challenges with automatically-maintained problem behavior. And this is tackled from both conceptual and treatment angles. As I mention in the episode, I don't encounter these types of problem behaviors that frequently these days, so it was a treat to update my knowledge in this area.  It's easy to think of automatic reinforcement as a monolith, but as it turns out, even dividing it up between positive and negative reinforcement may not be sufficient enough to render effective treatment.  We spent probably the first 25-30 minutes discussing some of the known challenges associated with assessing and treating these repertoires, and then spend the remaining time discussing Javier and his colleagues' paper, which presented two very unique investigations.  If you work with individuals with these profiles, you'll want to listen all the way through, and better still, check out the paper itself.  Here are some of the studies we discussed: Functional analysis patterns of automatic reinforcement: A review and component analysis of treatment effects (Virues-Ortega et al., 2022) An analysis of the reinforcing properties of handmouthing (Goh et al., 1995) Delineating subtypes of Self Injurious Behavior maintained by automatic reinforcement (Hagopian, Rooker, and Zarcone, 2015). A retrospective analysis of stereotypy: Applicability of the behavioral subtyping model (Wunderlich, Hemstreet and Best, 2022; not discussed during this episode, but in the same issue of JABA, and on my list to read next).  Lastly, I'd be remiss if I did not take a minute to thank Linda LeBlanc for reaching out to me to start the Inside JABA series. As I tell her every chance I get, I consider it an honor to be involved with the flagship journal in our field. If someone told me as an undergraduate at the University of New Hampshire that I'd be regularly involved with JABA in some capacity, I wouldn't have believed them.  As some of you might know, Linda's term as Editor in Chief is expiring, but we are planning to continue the podcast series with incoming EIC, Dr. John Borrero. More info on this to come, but in the meantime, please enjoy this installment of the Inside JABA Series.
